무슨 일이든지 시작과 끝이 있다. 집을 짓기 시작했으면 마칠 때가 있다. 마라톤 코스가 출발선이 있고 끝나는 지점이 있다. 비행기가 출발하면 도착지가 있다. 시험이 시작되면 마치는 시간이 있다. 우리의 삶의 모든 일과 만물도 마찬 가지다. 오늘 성경은 바로 그것을 말해 준다.
첫째, 만물은 시작과 끝이 있다(35-36절). 35절은 말한다. “누가 주께 먼저 드려서 갚으심을 받겠느냐” 사실 보답을 하고 은혜를 갚는 것은 먼저 받았기 때문이다. 받은 은혜를 갚는다. 주님이 우리에게서 먼저 받지 않는다. 절대로 그럴 수가 없다. 왜냐하면 우리는 주님보다 먼저 존재할 수 없기 때문이다. 성경은 말한다. “태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라”(창 1:1) 하늘과 땅의 만물은 주님이 창조하셨다. 하나님은 자기의 형상과 모양을 따라서 사람을 지으셨다(창 1:26-27). 집이나 차도 만든 사람이 있다. 만물도 우연히 생기지 않았다. 주님이 창조했기에 존재한다. 주님이 창조한 만물은 주님에 의해서 끝이 온다. 36절은 그것을 말해 준다. “이는 만물이 주에게서 나오고 주로 말미암고 주에게로 돌아감이라 그에게 영광이 세세에 있을지어다” 만물의 시작과 과정과 종말은 주님의 손에 달렸다.
오늘 본문의 ‘누구’란 말은 주님께서 지으신 사람을 가리킨다. 사람은 영원 전부터 먼저 계시는 주님이 만든 피조물이다. 주님이 먼저 계셔서 사람을 지으셨다. 사람은 주님으로부터 은총을 입었다. 주님은 사람에게 생명과 건강 그리고 사는 데 필요한 모든 것을 주셨다. 따라서 사람은 만물과 함께 모든 것을 시작하게 하시고 마치게 하시는 은혜를 주님에게 갚아야 한다.
1년의 시작과 끝이 있다. 23년의 시작이 있었고 끝이 있다. 오늘이 바로 그날이다. 24년도 새해도 시작과 끝이 있다. 내일 1월 1일에 시작해서 12월 31일에 마친다. 시작과 끝 처음과 마침은 무엇인가? 바로 창조주 하나님이시다. 그리고 십자가와 부활의 주님이시다. “나는 처음이요 나는 마지막이라 나 외에는 다른 신이 없느니라”(사 44:6). 주님은 “나는 처음이요 마지막이라”(계 1:17; 계 2:8). 만물의 운명은 시작이요 끝이신 주님께 달려 있다. 시간의 시작과 끝, 하루의 시작과 끝, 매주와 매달의 시작과 끝도 주님의 손에 달려 있다.
둘째, 삶의 시작과 끝이 있다(렘 10:23; 롬 11:36). 이 세상에서의 삶이 시작과 마침도 없이 계속되는것이 아니다. 태어나면서 삶이 시작되고 죽음으로서 마친다. 이것은 주님의 권능이다. 우리의 삶은 주님에 의해서 시작되고 유지되고 끝을 맺는다. 사람이 언제 태어나고 언제 죽는 지는 주님에 의해서 결정된다. 성경은 말한다. “보라 내가 오늘 생명과 복과 사망과 화를 네 앞에 두었노라”(신 30:15). 이 말은 사람을 지으시고 삶의 시작과 끝을 좌우하시는 주님의 권능을 보여 준다. 내 삶의 주인은 주님이시다. 내가 나의 삶을 맘대로 할 수 없다. 주님은 내 삶의 처음과 마지막을 아시고 주관하신다.
아브라함은 태어나서 75세에 하나님의 부르심을 받았다. 그는 사라를 아내로 얻고 100세에 이삭을 낳았다. 그의 삶의 끝은 175세이다. 이삭은 리브가와 결혼해서 야곱과 에서를 낳았다. 이삭의 생의 마지막은 180세였다. 야곱은 쌍둥이로 태어났다. 그는 형 에서의 장자권과 복을 빼앗고, 네 명의 아내에게서 12명의 자녀를 낳았다. 그는 130세에 애굽으로 가서 147세에 생을 마감했다. 모세는 태어나서 삶을 시작하면서부터 죽을 위기에 처했다. 이집트 왕 바로가 죽이려고 하였다. 모세는 바로의 공주의 아들로 왕궁에서 자랐다. 그는 40세에 왕궁을 떠나, 미디안 땅에서 80세까지 목자로 지냈다. 80세에 주님의 부르심을 받아서 120세까지 사역했다. 그는 모압 땅 느보산에서 생을 마감했다. 사도 바울은 예수님과 거의 동시대 사람으로 태어났다. 그는 율법에 사로잡힌 바리새인이었다. 그는 교회를 박해했다. 하지만 주님은 그를 불러서 복음을 전하는 사도로 세웠다. 그는 주를 위해 살면서 수많은 고난을 받았다. 그리고 그는 67-8세 쯤에 로마에서 순교했다.
한국의 한경직 목사님은 1903년에 생을 시작해서 목사가 되었다. 그는 일제시대와 6.25를 거쳤다. 그는 영락교회를 세웠다. 그는 2000년 98세로 생을 끝냈다. 한경직 목사님과 동시대 사람으로 주기철 목사님이 계시다. 주 목사님은 한경직 목사님과 비교되는 분이다. 그는 1897년에 태어나서 소명을 받아서 목사가 되었다. 그는 일제시대 때에 많은 박해와 고난을 당하고 1944년 48세로 감옥에서 순교했다. 오늘의 시대를 살아 가는 우리의 삶의 여정도 주님이 아시고 다스리신다. 내 삶의 시작이 있듯이 끝이 있다. 주님은 나의 모든 삶을 자기 뜻대로 주관하신다. 따라서 우리는 삶의 주인되시는 주님을 의지하며 살아야 한다.
셋째, 구원의 시작과 끝이 주님께 있다(빌 1:6). 성경은 “너희 속에 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라”(빌 1:6)고 말한다. 나를 죄와 사망에서 값 없이 구원하신 일은 가장 선한 일이다. 구원도 시작과 끝이 있다. 믿음으로 구원이 시작되고 부활을 통하여 주님과 함께 천국에서 영원한 안식을 누림으로 완성된다. 누가 구원을 시작하고 끝내는가? 구원을 시작하신 이가 끝낸다. 죄와 사망을 해결하신 분이 완성한다. 사람을 죄에서 구원하시는 주님이 속죄와 영생의 권능을 갖고 계신다. 사람이 스스로 ‘내가 구원을 받을거야, 천국 갈거야’한다고 되는 것이 아니다. 구원의 권능을 가지신 주님이 우리의 구원을 시작하시고 이루신다.
하나님은 구원을 계획하신다. 주님은 그 계획을 선지자들에게 알린다. 선지자들은 구원의 계획과 내용을 사람들에게 전해 준다. 하나님은 약속하신 계획을 실행하신다. 그래서 하나님은 구주 예수 그리스도를 보내셨다. 십자가와 부활을 통하여 구원사역을 완성했다. 이렇게 구원은 사람이 아니라 하나님이 시작하신다. 우리는 주 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿음으로 구원을 받는다. 우리의 구원의 역사가 이렇게 시작된다. 주님은 구원 받은 우리의 삶 가운데 역사하신다. 우리가 이 세상에서 사는 동안 함께 하시고 도와 주신다. 우리가 약할 때에 강하게 하시고, 넘어지려고 할 때에 붙들어 주신다. 우리가 고통스러워 하고 힘들어 할 때에 위로해 주신다. 엘리야 선지자가 갈멜산에서 여호와 하나님이 참 신이심을 증거했다. 그는 바알 선지자들을 죽였다. 그 때에 아합의 왕비 이세벨이 엘리야를 죽이려고 했다. 엘리야는 도망가면서 괴로워했다. 그는 차라리 죽는 것이 났다고 고백했다. 하나님은 낙심한 엘리야를 찾아 오셨다. 주님은 천사를 통해서 빵과 물을 제공했다. 그는 위로를 받고 힘을 얻었다. 엘리야는 호렙산으로 가서 하나님의 계시를 받고 사역을 계속했다.
우리가 좌절하고 낙심하고 주저 앉고 싶을 때에 주님은 다가 오시고 손을 내미신다. 주님은 나를 위로 하시고 다시금 일으켜 세우신다. 그래서 주님이 오실 때까지 나를 지켜 주시고 인도하신다. 하나님과 그리스도의 사랑이 나를 끝까지 안전하게 보호한다(롬 8:35-39). 그래서 주님은 나의 구원을 완성하신다. 나의 구원을 이루시는 주님께 감사하며 살자.
Beginning and Completion (Romans 11:35-36)
For everything, there is a beginning and an end. When a house starts being built, there is a time when it will be completed. For a marathon race, there is a start line and a finish line. When a plane departs from a place, there is a destination where it lands. When an exam starts, there is a time when it ends. Same goes with everything in our lives as well as all nature. Today’s Scripture tells us this.
First, there is a beginning and an end to all things (v35-36). It is written in verse 35, “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” Repayment implies that a person first received something from another. For instance, we pay back a favor we have received. Jesus did not first receive from us. That is impossible, because we cannot exist before the Lord. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The Lord created all things in heaven and earth. God created people in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). There are also people who made cars and houses. All things did not come into being by chance. They exist because God created them. What God has created will come to an end through God. Verse 36 speaks to this: “For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever!” The beginning, process, and end of all things are in the hands of the Lord.
Who in today’s passage refers to the people God created. People are creatures that God, who existed from eternity, created. God was first and he created them. People received favor from the Lord. Our Lord gave us life, health, and everything we need in life. Therefore, people should return the favor of the Lord who started and completed everything through us and all things in heaven and earth.
Now there is a beginning and an end to a year. There was the beginning of 2023 and it has an end. Today is that day when it ends. Same applies to 2024. It begins on January 1st and ends on December 31st. What is the beginning and the end, the first and the last? It is God the Creator and the Lord of the Cross and Resurrection. As it’s written, “I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God” (Isaiah 44:6). Jesus is “…the First and the Last” (Revelations 1:17, 2:8). The fate of all things is in the hand of Jesus who is the first and the last. Likewise, in his hand are the beginning and the end of time, day, week, and month.
Second, there is a beginning and an end to life (Jeremiah 10:23; Romans 11:36). Our life in this world does not continue endlessly without a beginning and an end. Our life begins at birth and ends in death. This is the power of the Lord. Our life begins, persists, and ends by the Lord. The times of a person’s birth and death are decided by the Lord. The Bible says, “See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction” (Deuteronomy 30:15). This shows the power of God, who created people and controls life’s beginning and end. The lord of our lives is Jesus. We cannot do whatever we want with our lives. Jesus knows the beginning and end of our lives and oversees them.
Abraham was called by God when he was 75 years old. He married Sarah and had Isaac when he was 100. He died at the age of 175. Isaac married Rebecca and bore Jacob and Esau. Isaac died at the age of 180. Jacob was a twin. He took the right of a firstborn and blessings from Esau who was older. He bore 12 children from four wives. Jacob moved to Egypt at the age of 130 and died at the age of 147. Moses’ life was at risk as soon as he was born. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, tried to kill newborn boys. Moses grew up in the palace under Pharaoh’s daughter’s care. He left the palace at the age of 40 and lived in Midian as a shepherd until age 80. He was called by the Lord at the age of 80 and led a ministry until the age of 120. He ended his life at Mount Nebo of Moab. Apostle Paul was born at the time of Jesus. He was a pharisee who studied the law. He persecuted the Christian church. However, the Lord called him to spread the gospel. He lived for the Lord and was persecuted. He was martyred at the age of 67~68 in Rome.
Reverend Kyung-chik Han was born in 1903 and became a pastor. He has been through the Japanese colonial era and Korean War. He established the Youngnak Church. He died at the age of 98 in 2000. There is another pastor of the same era named Ki-chol Chu. He is comparable to Pastor Kyung-chik Han. He was born in 1897 and was anointed as a pastor. He was persecuted during the Japanese colonial era and was martyred in a prison in 1944 at the age of 48. God knows the lives of us who live in the present day. As there is the beginning of life, there is also an end. The Lord reigns over our lives according to his will. Thus, we must trust in the Lord who is the lord of our lives.
Third, the beginning and completion of salvation belong to God (Phillippians 1:6). The Bible says, “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Phillippians 1:6). The work of salvation that saved us from sin and death without payment is the greatest work of goodness. Salvation has a beginning and completion. It starts from faith and is completed in eternal rest in heaven with the Lord at the resurrection. Who begins and completes the work of salvation? The one who starts the work of salvation also completes it. The one who overcame sin and death completes the work of salvation. The Lord who saves people from sin has the power of salvation and eternal life. One cannot enter heaven just by declaring that they will be saved and go to heaven. It is the Lord who has the power of salvation who starts the work of salvation and completes it.
God plans salvation. God tells the prophets about his plan. The prophets in turn tell the people about the plan and details of God’s salvation. Then, God fulfills his promise and plan. Thus, God sent us the Lord Jesus Christ. He fulfilled the ministry of salvation through crucifixion and resurrection. As such, God, not a man, begins the work of salvation. We are saved by believing that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. That is how the work of salvation begins. God works in the life of us who are saved. While we live in this world, God dwells with us and helps us. God strengthens us when we are weak and holds us when we fall. God comforts us when we are in pain and burdened. The prophet Elijah proved that God is a true god in Mount Carmel. He destroyed the prophets of Baal. At the time, Jezebel, the queen of Ahab, tried to kill Elijah. Elijah was running away and in great distress. He said that it would be better if he died. God came to Elijah who was dismayed. The Lord provided him bread and water through an angel. Elijah was comforted and strengthened. Elijah received revelation from God at Mount Horeb and continued his ministry.
When we are defeated, dismayed, and surrendered, our Lord comes to us and offers his hand. The Lord encourages us and helps us get back up. So the Lord protects and guides us until his coming. The love of God and Christ protects us endlessly (Romans 8:35-39). Thus, the Lord completes the work of our salvation. Let us live with thankfulness to our Lord who saves us.
