효자로 소문난 집이 있었다. 같은 동네에 사는 어떤 사람이 있었다. 그 사람의 자녀들은 부모의 말을 순종하지 않았다. 그 부모는 매우 괴롭고 마음이 아팠다. 그 부모는 해결책을 모색했다. 그래서 효자집을 방문해서 그 자녀들이 어떤지를 알아 보았다. 효자를 둔 아버지가 사다리를 지붕에 걸쳐 놓았다. 그는 자녀들에게 송아지를 끌고 와서 지붕 위로 올리라고 하였다. 그러자 효자 자녀들은 두말 없이 송아지를 지붕 위로 올리기 위해 최선을 다했다. 그것을 본 순종하지 않는 자녀의 부모는 똑 같은 방법으로 자녀들을 시험해 보기로 했다. 그는 자녀들에게 사다리를 지붕에 대고 송아지를 지붕 위로 올리라고 했다. 그러자 그 자녀들은 아버지를 비웃으면서 “아버지 지금 그게 말이 됩니까. 어떻게 송아지를 지붕 위로 올려요. 우리는 못합니다.”하고 거부했다. 그 부모는 한 숨을 쉬며 한탄했다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 하나님께서 광야 40년 동안 이스라엘을 시험하신 이유와 목적을 설명한다.
모세는 “내가 오늘 명하는 모든 명령을 너희는 지켜 행하라”고 말한다. 모세는 하나님의 말씀을 전하고 가르치는 사역자다. 오늘날 목회자와 같다. 모세는 지금 하나님의 말씀을 해석하여 전하고 있다. 그리고 그것은 성경이 되었다. 목회자도 하나님의 말씀을 전하고 선포하는 메신저다. 하나님 말씀은 세 가지 형태가 있다. 그것은 기록된 말씀, 계시된 말씀, 그리고 선포된 말씀이다. 기록된 말씀은 성경을, 계시된 말씀은 예수 그리스도를, 선포된 말씀은 목회자의 설교를 가리킨다. 사도행전에는 베드로와 바울의 설교가 기록되어 있다. 그 설교가 곧 성경이 되었다. 모세와 베드로 그리고 바울의 설교처럼 목회자의 설교도 하나님의 말씀의 형태로 작용한다. 그래서 성도들은 목회자의 설교를 데살로니가교회 성도들처럼 하나님 말씀으로 들어야 한다(살전 2:13).
모세는 모든 명령을 지켜 행하라고 말한다. 성경의 모든 말씀은 순종을 목적으로 주어졌다(신 4:1-2; 5:1; 6:1-3). 그래서 우리는 말씀을 지켜야 한다. 우리가 읽고 배우고 들은 말씀은 반드시 실천해야 한다. 왜냐하면 그것이 말씀을 주신 하나님의 뜻이기 때문이다. 실천되지 않은 진리는 나에게 유익이 없다. 내가 행할 때에 진리의 능력은 나타난다. 그래서 하나님의 교육은 실천을 목적으로 한다. 하나님은 자기 백성 이스라엘이 행하기를 간절히 원하셨다. 주를 믿고 구원 받은 우리도 마찬가지다. 주님은 우리가 모든 말씀을 행하기를 원하신다(마 7:24-27; 약 2:17, 26). 왜냐하면 우리가 행할 때에 주님의 뜻이 이루어지기 때문이다. 예수님은 실천의 모범이시다. 주님은 말씀대로 사시고 죽으셨다(고전 15:3-4). 우리도 주를 본받아서 성경의 교훈을 지켜야 한다.
하나님은 말씀을 행할 때에 보상을 약속하신다. 그들은 순종의 보상으로 살고 번성하고 약속의 땅 가나안에 들어 갈 수 있다(1절 후반). 우리는 주님이 주시는 보상을 받기 위해서 순종해야 한다. 주님은 우리가 믿으면 영생을 얻는다고 약속하신다(요 6:47-48). 베드로는 주님께 순종하여 그물이 찢어질 정도의 물고기를 잡았다. 우리가 주님이 약속하신 보상을 얻는 길은 주의 말씀을 순종하는 것이다.
2절은 광야 40년의 의미를 설명한다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성이 40년 동안 광야생활을 하게 하셨다. 그들은 그 이유를 기억해야 했다. 하나님은 자기 백성을 ‘낮추시려는’ 목적을 가지고 계셨다. 광야생활은 매우 힘들고 어렵다. 광야는 음식도 물도 집도 구할 수 없는 악조건이다. 그들은 고난의 환경에서 낮아졌다. 사람은 잘 나갈 때에는 어께에 힘이 들어가고 교만하기 쉽다. 하지만 원치 않는 시련과 고통 속에서는 낮아지게 된다. 그 때는 자존감이 떨어지고 자신이 멸시받는 자리에 있다고 생각한다. 하나님은 우리가 겸손하게 하시려고 여러가지 시련을 주신다. 주님의 교육은 겸손을 목적으로 한다. 그래서 우리는 항상 낮은 자리에 서야 한다. 우리는 죽기까지 낮아지신 주님처럼 겸손한 마음으로 낮은 자리에 서야 한다.
하나님은 이스라엘을 시험하셨다. 그들의 마음이 명령을 지키는지 안 지키는지를 시험하셨다. 하나님은 아브라함을 시험하셨다. 아브라함은 독자 이삭을 제물로 바치라는 시험을 통과했다. 그는 순종하여 이삭을 바쳤기 때문이다. 주님은 우리의 마음을 시험하신다. 우리가 주의 말씀을 순종하는지 그렇지 않는지를 시험하신다. 우리는 주님만 믿고 의지한다고 말한다. 하지만 세상의 것을 의지하고 산다. 우리는 주님만 바라본다고 고백한다. 하지만 세상을 바라본다. 우리는 주님 뜻대로 살리라고 말한다. 하지만 우리는 내 뜻대로 산다. 우리는 순종하며 살겠다고 다짐한다. 하지만 우리는 순종하지 않는다. 그래서 주님은 우리의 마음이 주의 말씀을 행하는지를 알아 보시려고 시험하신다. 우리가 시험에 통과하려면 주님처럼 순종해야 한다. 예수님은 사람으로 사시면서 하나님 아버지의 시험을 완벽하게 통과하셨다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 십자가에 죽기까지 순종하셨기 때문이다(빌 2:8).
우리는 기억해야 한다. 광야 40년은 하나님의 교육과 훈련 그리고 연단의 장이었다. 그리스도인의 삶은 광야 40년과 같다. 주님은 광야 같은 이 세상을 살아 갈 때에 우리를 교육하시고 훈련하시고 연단하신다. 어떤 성도님은 말한다. ‘왜 나에게는 이렇게 시련이 많은가. 고난이 끝났다 싶으면 또 다른 시련이 오지’ 하면서 힘들어 한다. 우리는 앞서가신 주님의 길을 가는 사람이다. 주님에게 있는 고난이 나에게 있는 것이다. 베드로는 “이를 위하여 너희가 부르심을 받았으니 그리스도도 너희를 위하여 고난을 받으사 너희에게 본을 끼쳐 그 자취를 따라오게 하셨느니라”(벧전 2:21)고 말한다. 주님은 우리에게 고난의 본을 보이셨다. 주님은 우리가 주님이 가신 고난의 길을 따라 오게 하셨다. 주님은 우리의 믿음을 시험해 보시고, 확인하시고, 알아 보시고, 단련하신다. 주님은 이것을 목적으로 우리를 낮추시면서 고난을 길을 가게 하신다.
하나님은 이스라엘이 자기와 그들의 조상들이 알지 못하는 만나를 40년간 먹게 하셨다. 그 이유는 무엇일까? 그것은 사람이 떡으로만 사는 것이 아니라 여호와의 입에서 나오는 모든 말씀으로 사는 것을 알려 주시기 위해서였다. 결국 이스라엘은 순종의 삶을 살아야 했다. 그것을 위해서 그들은 시험을 받았다. 주님은 지금도 우리가 오직 믿음으로 사는지, 말씀으로 사는지, 주님만을 사랑하며 사는 지를 알려고 하신다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 사람은 떡으로만 사는 것이 아니다. 하나님 앞에서 바른 삶은 하나님의 말씀으로 사는데 있다. 말씀을 떠난 삶은 가치가 없다. 결국 실패한 삶이다. 예수님의 삶은 전부가 말씀의 삶이었다. 주님은 말씀을 떠나지 않으셨다. 그래서 주님은 사람으로서 온전한 삶을 사셨다. 우리도 주님처럼 말씀으로 살아야 한다.
성공한 삶은 인기와 명예와 권세에 있지 않다. 세상에서 성공하여 모든 것을 얻어서 누리는 것이 온전한 삶이 아니다. 그것은 사람에게 구원과 영생을 주지 못하기 때문이다. 구원과 영생을 얻지 못한 삶은 실패한 삶이다. 우리가 주를 믿고 말씀으로 살면 영생을 얻는다. 나를 불행하게 하고 파멸시키고 영원한 지옥 형벌에서 건져주기 때문이다. 따라서 우리는 하나님의 형상으로 지으신 사람으로서 주님의 말씀으로 살아야 한다. 순종의 삶은 사람으로서 온전하고 성공한 삶이기 때문이다.
God’s Education (Deuteronomy 8:1 – 3)
There was a family whose son was known to be very obedient. Now there was another family in the neighborhood whose children were disobedient. The parents were grieved and troubled. So they looked for a resolution. They visited the other family to observe their children. The father of that family leaned a ladder against the gutter. Then he brought a calf and told his children to bring it to the roof. Then the obedient son immediately took the calf and did all he could to take the calf to the roof. So the parents of disobedient children decided to test his children with the same test. The father set up the ladder and told his children to take the calf to the roof. Then his children laughed and said, “Father, that’s ridiculous. How can we take the calf to the roof? We can’t.” and refused. So their parents sighed and lamented. In today’s Scripture, God explains the purpose and reason for testing the Israelites for 40 years in the wilderness.
Moses says, “Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today.” Moses is a minister who preaches and teaches the word of God. He is like today’s pastors. He interpreted and preached the word of God. And it became the Bible. Pastors are also messengers who preach and proclaim the word of God. The word of God takes three forms: recorded, revelations, and proclaimed. Recorded word refers to the Bible; revelations refers to Jesus Christ; and proclaimed word refers to ministers’ sermons. In the Book of Acts is recorded the sermons of Peter and Paul. These sermons became the Bible. Just like Moses’, Peter’s, and Paul’s sermons, the pastors’ sermons are a form of the word of God. Therefore, believers should listen to the pastors’ sermons as the word of God, just as the Thessalonian believers did (1 Thessalonians 2:13).
Moses says to keep all the commands. All the words in the Scriptures were given for us to obey (Deuteronomy 4:1-2; 5:1; 6:1-3). Therefore, we ought to obey the Word. We must put into practice the Word that we read and learn, because that is the will of God who gave it to us. Truth not obeyed is meaningless to us. The power of the truth is revealed when we obey. So the purpose of God’s education is obedience. God earnestly wanted his people, the Israelites, to obey. The same applies to us, who believed and were saved. He wants us to obey all his words (Matthew 7:24; James 2:17,26) because when we obey, God’s will is fulfilled. Jesus is the model of obedience. He lived and died according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 3-4). We also must follow Jesus’ example and keep the teachings of the Bible.
God promises reward when we put his word into practice. The Israelites could have lived and prospered with the reward of their obedience and entered the land of Canaan (v1). We must obey to receive the reward that God gives. God promised that we will receive eternal life if we believe (John 6:47-48). Peter heeded Jesus’s word and as a result caught such a large quantity of fish that the nets started to break. The way to receive the reward that the Lord promised is to obey his word.
Verse 2 explains the meaning of the 40 years in the wilderness. God had the Israelites live in the wilderness for 40 years. They had to remember the reason. His purpose was to ‘humble’ them. Life in the wilderness is extremely difficult and tough. Wilderness is the worst condition for finding food, water, or dwelling. The Israelites were humbled in such a difficult environment. It is easy for a person to become arrogant when everything is going well for them. However, they become humbled amid trials and hardships. They lose confidence and think they are in the position to be ridiculed. God gives us various trials to humble us. The purpose of his education is humility. Therefore we must always lower ourselves. Just like Jesus who humbled himself to death, we must lower ourselves with humility.
God tested Israel. He tested them to see if they would obey his commands. God tested Abraham. He passed the test to sacrifice his only son Isaac, because he obeyed and proceeded to sacrifice Isaac. The Lord tests our hearts. He tests us to see if we obey his words. We say we believe and trust only in God. But in reality, we tend to trust in the things of the world. We confess that we only look up to the Lord. But we tend to look up to the world. We say we will live by the Lord’s will. But we actually live by our will. We are determined to live in obedience. But we don’t obey. So God tests us to see if our hearts obey his word. In order to pass the test, we must obey as Jesus did. Jesus passed God the Father’s test perfectly while living as human, because Jesus obeyed to death on the cross (Philippians 2:8).
We must remember – 40 years in the wilderness was the field of God’s education, training, and discipline. The life of Christians is like the 40 years in the wilderness. While we live in this world that’s like the wilderness, our Lord educates, trains, and disciplines us. A believer asks, ‘Why do I have so many hardships? At the end of a hardship, another hardship awaits me.’ We are those who walk in the path of Jesus. The hardships that Jesus went through, we also go through. Peter says, “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps” (1 Peter 2:21). Jesus showed us an example in hardships. He has us follow him in the way of hardship that he tread. He tests, checks, and disciplines our faith. With this purpose, he humbles us and makes us walk the path of hardship.
God sent the Israelites manna that neither they nor their ancestors knew about for 40 years. Why did he? It was to teach them that one does not live by bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. The Israelites had to live in obedience. For this they were tested. Even now, he wants to know whether or not we live only by faith, the word of God, and with love toward Jesus. We must remember – we do not live by bread alone. The righteous life before God is the life of obeying by the word of God. Life apart from the word of God is meaningless. It is a failure. Jesus’ life was entirely about the word of God. He never departed from it. So he lived a perfect life as a human. We must follow his footsteps and live by the word of God.
Successful life isn’t in popularity, reputation, or authority. Perfect life isn’t one in which we are successful in this world and enjoy all things the flesh desires. These cannot give us salvation and eternal life. And life that does not have salvation and eternal life is a failure. We gain eternal life when we believe in the Lord and live by his word, because then we are delivered from eternal punishment in hell. Therefore, as people made in the image of God, we must live by the word of the Lord. For the life of obedience is the perfect and most successful life.
