이 세상에 있는 것은 각각 이름과 명칭이 있다. 명칭에는 그 의미와 정의가 있다. 예를들면 창조에 관한 의미와 정의가 있다. 또한 믿음이란 말이 있고, 믿음에 대한 설명이 있다. 오늘 성경은 사랑의 의미를 설명한다.
“사랑은 이것이니” 사랑에 대한 정의는 여러 가지다. 사전에는 ‘사람이나 존재를 아끼고 위하여 정성과 힘을 다하는 마음이다’고 기록되어 있다. 에리히 프롬은 ‘사람이 혼자 있는 상태를 극복하기 위한 다른 사람과 이루는 연합’이라고 정의한다. 또 다른 정의는 ‘사람과의 관계에서 경험할 수 있는 가장 행복하고 오묘한 감정’으로 설명한다. 사랑의 4가지 정의가 있다. 첫째는 ‘에로스’이다. 에로스는 남녀 사이의 애정을 말한다. 둘째는 ‘필리아’다. 필리아는 서로 간에 잘되기를 바라는 순수한 마음을 말한다. 셋째는 ‘스톨게’이다. 스톨게는 부모와 자녀관계의 사랑이다. 넷째로 ‘아가페’가 있다. 아가페는 하나님께서 사람을 사랑하는 것이다. 사랑의 공통적인 특성은 관계성이다. 모든 사랑은 서로간의 이루어진다. 그것은 사람과 사람, 그리고 하나님과 사람 사이에서 이루어진다. 즉 사랑은 그 대상을 전제한다. 상대가 없는 사랑은 성립되지 않는다는 것이다. 우리는 하나님과 이웃, 형제, 그리고 원수를 대상으로 사랑한다.
성경에서 말하는 사랑, 곧 아가페도 사랑하는 상대와의 관계성 속에서 이루어진다. 성경이 교훈하는 사랑은 사도 바울과 사도 요한의 정의가 있다. 바울의 정의는 고린도전서 13장에 있다. 바울의 정의는 사랑의 속성으로서의 실천적인 측면을 설명한다. 바울은 사랑은 오래 참는다고 말한다. 믿음의 사람이 오래 참으면 사랑으로 행하는 것이다. 우리가 하나님과 주님과 관계에서 오래참고 끝까지 믿는 것이 사랑이다. 어떤 사람에 대하여 끝까지 참고, 어떤 상황에 대하여 오래 참는 것이 사랑이다. 예수님은 죽기까지 참으셨다. 바울은 사랑은 온유하다고 말한다. 오래 참음이 계속되면 온유해 진다. 어떤 사람이나 상황에 잘 적응하고 수용적이고 부드러워지는 것이 사랑이다. 부드럽고 너그러운 적응성, 수용성이 사랑이다. 주님은 모든 사람과 상황을 자비롭게 수용하고 적응하셨다.
바울은 사랑은 시기하지 않는다고 말한다. 시기는 자기 중심적이고 이기적일 때 나온다. 내 유익이 아닌 남의 유익을 구하고, 내가 아닌 다른 사람을 기쁘게 하면 시기하지 않는다. 사랑은 다른 사람의 잘 됨과 유익을 구한다. 사랑은 자랑하지 않는다. 나의 자랑이 상대방에게 유익을 주지 않으면 피하는 것이다. 자랑은 자신을 드러내고 남을 해칠 수 있다. 사랑은 무례하게 행하지 않는다. 사랑은 모든 사람에게 예의를 지킨다. 말과 행동이 사려 깊어야 한다. 사랑은 진리와 함께 기뻐한다. 진리의 예수님과 말씀을 즐거워 하는 것이 사랑이다. 세상에 있는 것은 마음에도 안 들고 기뻐하지 않는 것이 사랑이다. 사랑은 모든 것을 믿고 바라고 견딘다. 바울은 사랑은 온전한 것이라고 말한다(골 3:14). 사랑은 내 삶을 온전하게 만든다. 사랑은 가장 큰 은사다.
사도 요한의 정의가 있다. 요한의 정의는 믿음에 근거한 사랑의 원리적 측면을 말한다. 요한은 예수님의 십자가의 죽음이 사랑이라고 가르친다(요일 3:16). 십자가의 죽음을 떠나서는 사랑을 알 수 없다는 의미다. 십자가의 죽음은 곧 순종이다. 요한은 오늘 본문에서 말한다. “사랑은 이것이니 우리가 그 계명을 따라 행하는 것이요” 예수님의 십자가는 하나님의 계명을 행한 것이다. 계명을 순종한 십자가가 하나님의 사랑을 증거하셨다(롬 5:8). 우리가 주님의 계명을 순종하지 않고 사랑할 수 없다. 즉 말씀을 순종하지 않는 사랑은 참 사랑이 아니다. 요한은 “하나님을 사랑하는 것은 이것이니 우리가 그의 계명들을 지키는 것이라”고 말한다. 우리는 주님의 계명을 지키지 않고 주님을 사랑할 수 없다. 예수님은 “나의 계명을 지키는 자라야 나를 사랑하는 자”(요 14:15, 21)라고 말씀한다. 우리가 주님을 사랑하는 증거는 주님의 계명을 지키는 것이다.
사랑은 순종이다. 우리가 주님의 계명을 순종하는 것은 곧 자신을 사랑하는 것이다. 아담은 하나님 말씀을 불순종했다. 그래서 자신과 그의 후손이 죽었다. 예수님은 순종하셔서 구속사역을 완성하시고 주를 믿는 모든 사람을 구원하셨다. 우리가 주의 계명을 순종하지 않으면 자신을 불행하게 만든다. 자신의 잘 됨과 복과 형통이 순종에 있다. 계명을 지키는 것은 자녀를 사랑하는 것이다. 아간은 불순종하여 자기의 온 가족이 돌에 맞아 죽었다. 아브라함은 순종하여 곧 사랑을 실천하여 자신과 후손이 복을 받았다(창 22:16-18). 우리가 자녀와 가족을 사랑하는 길은 계명을 지키는 것이다. 사랑하는 자녀가 잘되고 복받고 형통하기 원하면 순종해야 한다. 순종은 나라를 사랑하는 길이다. 하나님의 계명을 불순종한 이스라엘과 유다 왕들은 나라를 망하게 했다. 나라를 사랑하지 않는 것이다. 주의 계명을 순종한 다윗 왕과 여호사밧 왕은 나라의 번영과 평안을 가져 왔다. 그들은 나라를 사랑한 것이다.
순종은 자신을 포함하여 모두를 사랑하는 길이다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 예수님은 믿는 우리에게 돈과 부와 명예와 권세를 주시지 않았다. 주님은 죽기까지 순종하셔서 나를 죄와 사망에서 구원하셨다. 거기에 주님의 사랑이 있다. 주님께서 십자가를 지시는 순종이 없이 세상의 모든 복을 주셨다면 우리는 영원히 죽는다. 우리는 주님의 길을 가야 한다. 예수님처럼 계명을 지켜야 한다. 순종의 삶에 사랑이 있다. 주님의 계명을 순종하여 사랑으로 행하기를 주님의 이름으로 바란다. 그래서 자신과 관계 있는 모든 사람이 주님의 은총과 복을 누리며 살기를 바란다.
What is Love? (2 John 1:6)
All things in the world have a name. And there are meanings and definitions for each name. For example, there are meanings and definitions of creation. Moreover, there are meanings and explanations about what faith is. Today’s Scripture describes the meaning of love.
“This is love” – there are many definitions of love. A dictionary defines it as, ‘strong affection for another person or thing and devoting their strength and effort on them.’ Erich Fromm defined it as, ‘unity with another in order to overcome being alone.’ Another definition of love is, ‘the most happy and mysterious feeling that a person can experience in a relationship.’ There are 4 definitions of love. First is Eros. This refers to affection between a man and a woman. Second is Philia, and it refers to having a mind of wanting the good of another. Third is Storage. It refers to the love between parents and children. Fourth is Agape. Agape is God’s love for humans. The common characteristic of love is relationship. All love happens mutually. Love happens between people and between God and people. In other words, love requires there to be someone who receives it. There cannot be love where there is no other. We love God, neighbors, brothers and sisters, and enemies.
Love described by the Bible, that is, agape is also formed within a relationship with another. There are definitions of love that the Bible teaches, which are defined by Apostle Paul and Apostle John. Paul’s definition is in 1 Corinthians 13. His definition describes the characteristics of love and explains the practical side of it. Paul says love is patient. If a person of faith is patient, they are acting in love. We are acting in love when we are patient in our relationship with God and our Lord and believing till the end. Persevering to the end for someone, and being patient in any situation is love. Jesus persevered to death. Moreover, Paul says love is kind. If patience is continuously practiced, then we become kind. Love is adapting to all circumstances, getting along with others, being receptive, and being mellow. Jesus adapted to and accepted all people and situations with compassion.
Paul says that love does not envy. Envy stems from an egocentric mind and selfishness. If we seek others’ good and please others, we would not envy them. Love seeks the good of others. Love does not boast. Love avoids boasting if it hurts others. Boasting only reveals oneself but can hurt others. Love is not rude. Love is respectful to everyone. We must be considerate in word and action. Love rejoices with the truth. Love is rejoicing in the truth and Jesus’s Word. Love is hating the things of the world. Love always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Paul says that love is perfect (Colossian 3:14). Love makes our lives perfect. Love is the greatest gift.
There is also Apostle John’s definition of love. John’s definition of love points to the principle of love that is based on faith. John teaches us that Jesus’s death on the cross is love (1 John 3:16). Without the death on the cross, we cannot know the meaning of love. Christ’s death on the cross is obedience. John says in today’s passage, “This is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.” Jesus’s crucifixion was obedience to God’s commands. Christ’s obedience through crucifixion testified to God’s love (Romans 5:8). Without obeying the Lord’s commands, we cannot love. In other words, love without obedience to the Word is not true love. That is why John says, “This is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.” We cannot love God without obeying his commands. Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15, 21). The proof that we love the Lord is revealed in our obedience to the Lord’s commands.
Love is obedience. When we obey the Lord’s commands, we are loving ourselves. Adam disobeyed God’s commands. Thus, he and his descendents died. However, Jesus obeyed and completed the ministry of salvation and saved all who believed in him. When we disobey the Lord’s commands, we make ourselves unfortunate. Our own prosperity and blessings are tied to our obedience. Obedience is loving one’s children. Achan disobeyed and his entire family was stoned to death. Abraham on the other hand obeyed and acted in love and his descendants were blessed (Genesis 22:16-18). To love our children and family, we have to obey the Lord’s commands. If we want our children to be successful, blessed and prosperous, we must obey. Obedience is the way to love our nation. God destroyed the nations of the kings of Israel and Judah who disobeyed. They did not love their nation. King David and King Johoshephat who obeyed the Lord’s commands brought prosperity and peace to their nation. They loved their nation.
Obedience is the way to love not only oneself but everyone. We must remember that Jesus did not give us, who believe, money, wealth, reputation and power. The Lord obeyed to death and delivered us from sin and death. This is where the Lord’s love is. We would have died eternally if the Lord did not suffer crucifixion, but gave us all the worldly blessings. We must follow the path of the Lord. We must obey the Word like Jesus. Love is in the life of obedience. I wish in the Name of the Lord that you will do everything in love by obeying the Lord’s commands.
