한국의 어떤 한우 농가에 1,600kg이 나가는 수퍼 소가 있다. 일반 소보다 두배 이상이 크고 튼튼하다. 그 소는 뉴스에 나오고 전국에 알려졌다. 그 소의 주인은 매우 만족스럽게 여기고 자랑스러워 했다. 우리는 살면서 항상 건강하기를 원한다. 우리는 마음도, 정신도, 몸도, 가정도, 삶도 강건하기를 원한다. 우리의 강건함 가운데 영적 강건이 있다. 오늘 성경은 그것을 말한다.
오늘 읽은 성경은 이 편지를 쓴 사도 바울의 기도이다. 바울은 복음을 전하여 가르치는 목회자로서 에베소교회의 성도들에게 간절히 원하는 바가 있다. 그것은 오늘 성도들을 가르치고 돌보는 목회자의 기도가 되어야 한다. 주의 양을 먹이고 치는 목회자는 주님 안에서 성도들이 어떠한 사람이 되어야 하는 지를 알아야 한다. 목회자는 그것을 정확하고 확실하게 이해하고 통찰해야 한다. 그래야 성도들을 위한 바른 기도와 목회를 할 수 있다. 성도들이 세상적으로 잘 되고 복되고 형통하는 것도 중요하다. 하지만 그것보다 더 중요한 것이 있다. 오늘 목회자로서 바울의 기도는 그것을 분명하게 보여 준다.
바울은 하늘과 땅에 있는 각 족속에게 이름을 주신 아버지 하나님 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 기도한다. 하나님은 하늘에 있는 모든 가족에게 이름을 주셨다. 또한 주님은 땅에 있는 모든 족속에게 이름을 주셨다. 모든 사람과 가족의 이름은 주님이 주신 것이다. 하나님께서 그들을 지으셨기 때문이다. 그들을 지으신 주님은 각각 이름을 주셨다. 이것은 부모가 자녀를 낳고 이름을 지은 것과 같다.
바울은 아버지께 기도한다. 기도는 우리가 아버지께 구하는 것이다. 자녀가 그 아버지에게 필요한 것을 요청하는 것과 같다. 아버지는 사랑하는 자녀가 요청하는 것을 들어 준다. 아버지는 자녀의 필요 알고 제공하고 돌보아 준다. 하나님 아버지와 그 자녀인 우리의 관계도 마찬가지다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑하셔서 독생자 주 예수 그리스도까지 아끼지 않으시고 보내셨다. 주님은 우리를 위해 죽으시기까지 사랑하셨다. 그리고 주님은 우리를 자녀 삼으셨다. 이렇게 우리를 사랑하시는 아버지 하나님은 자녀인 우리에게 필요한 것을 아신다. 그것은 곧 오늘 바울의 기도에 나타난다. 바울의 기도는 곧 하나님 아버지의 마음이요 원함이다.
바울의 기도의 내용은 영적 강건함이다. 부모는 자녀가 강건하기를 원한다. 자녀를 사랑하는 부모는 몸도 마음도 정신도 강건하기를 원한다. 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지는 우리가 영적으로 강건하기를 바라신다. 바울은 “그의 영광의 풍성함을 따라 그의 성령으로 말미암아 너희 속 사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하시오며”라고 기도한다. ‘그의 영광의 풍성은’ 주님의 권능에 나타났다. 주님의 영광은 창조의 권능에 있다. 하나님은 천지를 창조하시고, 만드신 만물에 자기의 영광의 풍성함을 나타내셨다. 예수님은 많은 병자를 고치셨다. 주님은 중풍 병자를 고치시고 못 걷는 사람을 걷게 하셨다. 주님은 죽은 나사로를 살리셨다. 주님은 물 위를 걸으시고 물로 포도주를 만드셨다. 주님은 이러한 권능을 통해서 하나님의 영광을 드러내셨다. 사람들은 예수님의 능력을 보고 하나님께 영광을 돌렸다. 사람들은 이런 일은 도무지 보지 못했다고 하면서 놀랐다.
주님의 영광의 풍성은 십자가와 부활의 권능에 나타났다. 죄는 하나님의 영광을 드러내지 못한다. 죄는 하나님의 영광을 가리고, 주님을 욕되게 한다. 하지만 죄의 더러움과 수치에서 벗어나게 되면 주님의 영광이 드러난다. 우리가 주 예수를 구주로 믿으면 죄가 씻어진다. 그래서 우리는 거룩하신 하나님 앞에서 깨끗하고 의롭게 되어서 하나님을 영화롭게 한다. 주님의 십자가의 속죄와 부활의 권능은 죄와 사망의 수치를 제거한다. 십자가와 부활은 주님의 거룩함과 의와 사랑과 은혜와 평강과 생명의 영광의 풍성을 드러낸다. 왜냐하면 주님의 사랑과 의와 거룩함과 은혜와 평강과 영원한 생명은 십자가와 부활의 권능을 통해서 나타났기 때문이다.
십자가와 부활의 권능은 믿는 우리에게 성령으로 주어졌다. 우리의 죄가 깨끗하게 되고 사망의 권세에서 벗어나는 것은 성령의 역사다. 죄는 우리의 속 사람을 약하게 파괴시킨다. 성령은 우리의 마음이 의롭고 거룩하게 하여 강건하게 한다. 의롭고 깨끗한 마음은 영적 강건함을 준다. 또한 성령은 우리 마음에 임하셔서 거듭나게 한다. 우리가 성령으로 거듭나게 되면 영원한 생명을 얻게 된다. 그래서 성령은 우리가 영원한 천국에서 살 수 있는 능력을 준다. 무엇이든지 강한 것이 오래 간다. 수명이 짧은 것은 강하지 못하다. 수명이 긴 것이 강하다. 풀보다 나무가 더 강하다. 나무보다 돌이 더 강하다. 그것은 수명이 더 길기 때문이다. 성령은 우리가 영원히 살게 한다. 그래서 성령은 우리 속 사람을 강하게 한다.
우리가 죄와 사망을 이기는 능력이 성령께 있다. 우리는 성령의 능력으로 악한 마귀를 물리쳐 이긴다. 예수님은 성령의 권능으로 귀신을 쫓아 내셨다(마 12:28). 그래서 주님은 우리 마음에 하나님의 나라가 임하게 하셨다. 이 세상 나라보다 하나님 나라가 더 강하다. 천국은 영원한 나라이기 때문이다. 주님은 성령으로 역사하시는 말씀으로 마귀의 시험을 이기셨다(마 4:1-10). 성령은 우리 마음에 주님의 말씀을 생각나게 하고 가르쳐 준다(요 14:26). 성령은 하나님 말씀을 마음에 가져 온다. 주의 말씀은 곧 주님의 능력이다. 성령은 우리 마음에 주의 말씀을 주셔서 그 능력으로 속 사람을 강하게 한다. 그래서 우리가 말씀의 능력으로 죄를 이기게 한다. 성령으로 역사하시는 말씀은 세상 유혹과 악한 마귀를 이기게 한다. 말씀이 우리 마음에 임하면 모든 고난과 시련도 이긴다.
우리의 속 사람의 강함은 세상에 있지 않다. 돈이나 재물이나 명예나 권세가 속 사람을 강하게 하지 못한다. 세상적 지식이나 지혜와 지식 그리고 인간적인 노력과 실력이 속 사람을 강하게 하지 못한다. 우리 속 사람의 강함은 세상에 속하지 않은 하나님 아버지로부터 주어진다. 십자가와 부활의 권능 곧 죄와 사망을 이기는 권능은 주님께 속해 있다. 그것은 이 세상이나 사람의 권능이 아니다. 그것은 하늘에 계신 하나님의 권능이다. 하늘에 속한 주님의 권능은 성령으로 주어진다. 그 성령은 우리의 속 사람을 능력으로 강건한다. 그래서 성령으로 살아야 한다. 영은 영을 강건하게 한다. 내 영에 강한 영이 임할 때에 내 영이 강하게 된다. 성령은 하나님의 영이다. 성령보다 강한 영은 없다. 그래서 우리 마음에 성령이 임하면 우리는 강하게 된다. 또한 성령은 주의 말씀을 마음에 가져 온다. 주의 말씀은 주의 권능이다. 성령이 우리 마음에 말씀으로 역사할 때에 우리 속 사람은 강건하게 된다. 그래서 우리는 말씀으로 살아야 한다. 그러면 우리의 속 사람은 강건하게 된다. 성령은 우리 마음에 주의 말씀과 생명과 의와 거룩함과 은혜와 평강을 주셔서 강건한다. 성령으로 속 사람이 강건하게 되기를 주님의 이름으로 바란다.
Being Spiritually Strong and Healthy (Ephesians 3:16-17)
There was a super cow that weighed 1,600kg at a cattle farm in Korea. It is twice as big as an average cow and very healthy. It was on the news and became well known all over the country. The cow’s owner was very content and proud. People want to always be healthy. We want our mind, mentality, body, family, and life to be healthy. Now there is spiritual strength and health, which today’s Scripture talks about.
Today’s Scripture is the prayer of Apostle Paul, who wrote the letter. As a minister who preaches and teaches the gospel, Paul had eager expectations from the believers at the church in Ephesus. This should be the prayer of pastors who teach and look after believers. Ministers who feed and take care of the sheep ought to know what kind of people believers ought to be in the Lord. They should understand and have insight into it accurately and surely. Then they can pray for the believers and do ministry rightly. Of course it is important for believers to be blessed and prosperous in this world. However, there is something more important than that. The prayer of Paul, who is a minister, shows this clearly.
Paul kneels down and prays before God the Father who gave names to all the nations in heaven and on earth. God gave names to all families in heaven. Moreover, the Lord gave names to all nations on the earth. The Lord gave names to all the people and families, because God created them. Jesus who created them gave a name to each of them. It is the same as parents naming their children.
Paul prays to the Father. Praying is an act of asking the Father. It is the same as children asking their father for what they need. And fathers listen to what their dear children ask for. Fathers know their children’s needs, and provide and care for them. Same goes with the relationship between the Father and us, his children. God loved us and did not spare his Son Jesus Christ but sent him to us. The Lord loved us to death. And Jesus made us his children. God the Father who loves us this much knows our needs, who are his children. This is revealed in Paul’s prayer. Paul’s prayer is the Father’s heart and his desires.
The content of Paul’s prayer is spiritual strengthening. Parents want their children to be strong and healthy. Parents who love their children want them to also be healthy physically and mentally. God the Father who loves us wants us to be spiritually strong and healthy. Paul prays, “…that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” ‘His glorious riches’ is revealed in the power of the Lord. His glory is in the power of creation. God created heaven and earth, and revealed his glorious riches to all things he created. Jesus healed many illnesses. He healed the paralyzed and the lame. The Lord raised Lazarus, who was dead, to life. Jesus walked on water and made wine out of water. He showed the glory of God through these powers. And people saw Jesus’ power and gave glory to God. People exclaimed that they had never seen such power and were amazed.
The fullness of the Lord’s glory was revealed through the cross and the resurrection. Sin cannot reveal God’s glory. Rather, it conceals the glory of God and insults the Lord. However, when we escape from the uncleanness and shame of sin, the Lord’s glory is revealed. When we believe in the Lord Jesus as our Savior, our sins are washed away. It makes us clean and righteous before the holy God and glorifies God. The forgiveness of the Lord’s cross and the power of resurrection removes the shame of sin and death. The cross and the resurrection reveal the Lord’s holiness, righteousness, love, grace, peace, life, glory, and fullness. This is because the Lord’s love, righteousness, holiness, grace, peace and eternal life came through the power of the cross and the resurrection.
The power of the cross and the resurrection was given by the Holy Spirit to us who believe. The cleansing of our sins and breaking free from sin and death is the work of the Holy Spirit. Sin destroys our inner being by making it weak. The Holy Spirit on the other hand strengthens our inner being by making it righteous and holy. A righteous and clean heart makes a spirit strong. Moreover, the Holy Spirit comes to our hearts and makes us be reborn. When we are reborn by the Holy Spirit, we receive eternal life. Thus, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to live in eternal heaven. The strong one always lasts longer. A short life span is not strong. A long life span is strong. Trees are stronger than grass. Rocks are stronger than trees. That is because they last longer. The Holy Spirit makes us live eternally. That is why the Holy Spirit makes our inner being strong.
The power to overcome sin and death is in the Holy Spirit. We can defeat the devil by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus cast out demons by the power of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:28). Thus, the Lord made the Kingdom of God come to our hearts. The kingdom of God is stronger than the kingdom of this world. That is because heaven is an eternal kingdom. The Lord defeated the devil by the Word of God that works by the Holy Spirit (Mathew 4:1-10). The Holy Spirit helps us remember and teaches us the Word of the Lord (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit brings the Word of God to our minds. The Word of the Lord is the power of the Lord. The Holy Spirit gives us the Word of the Lord and makes our inner being strong by its power. Thus, it helps us overcome sin by the power of the Word. The Word that works through the Holy Spirit helps us to overcome worldly temptations and the devil. When the Word comes to our mind, we can overcome all hardships and tribulations.
The strength of our inner being does not come from the world. Neither money, possessions, reputation, nor power can make our inner being strong. Neither worldly knowledge, wisdom, nor effort and skills can make our inner being strong. The strength of our inner being is given by God who does not belong to this world. The power of the cross and the resurrection, the power to overcome sin and death, belongs to God. This is not the power of the world or a man. This is the power of God in heaven. The power of the Lord who belongs in heaven comes through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit makes our inner being strong through power. That is why we need to live by the Holy Spirit. Spirit makes spirit strong. Our spirit becomes strong when a strong spirit comes to us. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God. There is no spirit that is stronger than the Holy Spirit. That is why when the Holy Spirit comes to us, we become strong. The Holy Spirit also brings the Lord’s Word to our heart. The word of the Lord is the power of the Lord. Our inner being becomes strong when the Holy Spirit works by the Word. That is why we must live by the Word. Only then will our inner being become strong. The Holy Spirit gives us the Word of God, life, righteousness, holiness, grace and peace. I hope in the Name of the Lord that your inner being will become strong by the Holy Spirit.
