사람은 본성적으로 복과 형통을 원한다. 사람들은 원하는 일이 잘 안 풀리고, 복이 아닌 화가 닥치고, 형통하지 않는 것을 싫어한다. 모든 사람은 하는 일마다 잘 되고, 원하는대로 되고, 번영하는 것을 소망한다. 이러한 사람의 성향은 사람을 지으신 하나님의 원리에 기인한다. 하나님은 자기가 만든 사람이 복을 받고 잘 되기를 원하신다. 또한 주님은 사람이 그러한 마음을 갖고 살게 하셨다. 그래서 하나님은 독생자 예수님까지 보내 주셨다. 주님은 우리를 죄와 사망의 저주에서 해방하시고 영생의 복을 주셨다. 오늘 본문은 복되고 형통한 삶을 알려 준다.
첫째, 여호와를 경외하는 삶이 복이 있다(1절 전반). 여호와를 경외하는 것은 무엇인가? 신약의 의미로 말하면 주를 믿음으로 순종하는 것이다. 경외하는 것은 두려움을 동반한다. 모든 생명과 만물의 주관자이고 심판장이신 하나님을 무서워 하는 마음을 갖는 것이다. 그것은 믿음으로 살 때에 나타난다. 그것은 하나님만 의지하고 주님만 내 삶의 주인 삼는 것이다. 주를 경외하는 것은 하나님 앞에서 온전한 삶을 말한다. 하나님을 경외하는 사람은 세상에 있는 것을 의지하지 않는다. 그는 한 눈 팔지 않고 주만 바라본다. 그래서 믿음으로 사는 삶은 복되고 형통한다. 또한 주님을 경외하는 것은 순종에 있다. 주님을 무서워 함으로 순종하는 것이다. 그것은 순종하지 않으면 주를 화나게 하고 슬프시게 한다는 것을 이해하는 마음이다. 아담은 불순종해서 하나님을 경외하지 않았다. 아브라함은 주님을 경외함으로 순종했다. 예수님은 하나님만 경외했다. 그래서 주님은 온전히 순종하셨다. 순종은 복과 형통의 지름길이다(레 26:1-13; 신 28:1-14).
하나님 경외의 핵심은 죄를 떠나는 것이다. 경외하는 사람은 죄를 짓지 않는다. 그는 주님 앞에서 거룩하고 깨끗하게 살려고 힘쓴다. 경외하지 않는 사람은 죄 가운데서 산다. 죄는 복과 형통을 방해한다. 복과 형통은 의롭고 거룩한 삶에 임한다. 구약의 요셉은 보디발의 아내의 유혹에 빠지지 않고 죄에서 벗어났다. 그의 삶은 복되고 형통했다. 그는 결국 애굽의 총리가 되었다. 주님을 경외하는 것은 악을 행하지 않는 것이다. 경외하는 사람은 하나님의 진노와 심판을 두려워 하여 악을 떠난다. 하나님을 경외하는 사람은 주님을 사랑하고 기쁘시게 한다. 우리는 죄와 악을 떠나야 한다. 그래서 하나님이 주시는 복과 형통을 누려야 한다.
둘째, 복과 형통은 주의 길로 행하는 데 있다(1절 전반). 하나님의 복은 주님만 의지하면서 주의 길로 행하는 데 있다. 사람의 길이 있다. 그것은 사람이 마땅히 가야하고 행해야 할 길이다. 하나님의 길이 있다. 하나님이 원하시고 행하시는 길이다. 하나님의 길은 주의 말씀에 있다. 예수님은 주의 길로 행하셨다. 그래서 복과 형통은 예수님과 말씀에 있다. 주님을 믿으면 영생의 복을 받고 믿지 않으면 영원한 형벌을 받는다. 우리가 예수님을 본받고 주님처럼 살면 복과 형통은 보장된다. 예수님은 말씀대로 사셨다. 우리가 주님과 말씀을 떠나면 복과 형통도 떠난다. 그래서 우리가 성경을 가까이 하고 읽고 배우고 지켜야 한다. 왜냐하면 거기에 복과 형통이 있기 때문이다.
하나님은 사람이 말씀으로 살도록 만드셨다. 사람이 주의 말씀을 떠나면 무익한 삶이 된다. 그것은 실패한 삶이 된다. 그것은 불순종한 아담처럼 되고 광야에서 멸망한 이스라엘처럼 된다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 최선의 삶은 말씀으로 사는 것이다. 나를 지으신 주님의 뜻대로 온전한 삶이 말씀에 있다. 주의 말씀대로 살 때에 성공이 있다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 말씀을 가지고 주의 길로 행해야 한다. 우리는 주님과 함께 걸어야 한다. 우리는 주님의 손을 굳게 잡고 주의 길을 가야 한다. 주의 길은 말씀의 길이다. 주의 길은 사랑의 길이다. 주의 길은 선하고 의롭고 거룩한 길이다. 그래서 우리는 말씀을 따라서 사랑으로 행하고 선하고 의롭고 거룩한 삶을 살아야 한다. 거기에 복과 형통이 있다.
셋째, 믿음으로 순종하는 수고가 헛되지 않는 삶이다(2절). 우리는 수고하고 일한 결과가 좋기를 바란다. 모든 수고가 항상 유익하고 형통하는 삶은 하나님을 경외하고 그 길로 행하는 데 있다. 모든 일에는 원인과 결과가 있다. 결과는 원인에 의해서 결정된다. 어떤 근거 없이 결과가 오지 않는다. 거두기 위해서는 심어야 한다. 물을 얻기 위해서는 샘을 파야 한다. 성경은 심은대로 거둔다고 말한다(갈 6:7-8). 육체로 심으면 썩어질 것을 거두고 성령으로 심으면 영생을 거둔다. 사람은 행한대로 받는다(마 16:27; 롬 2:6; 고후 5:10). 이것은 하나님이 정하신 원리다. 사람이 악을 행하면 그에 따른 형벌이 있다. 아담의 죄는 죽음을 가져 왔다. 의를 행하면 생명과 평안이 있다. 이방인 고넬료의 가정은 하나님을 경외하고 가난한 사람을 구제하고 항상 기도했다. 그 결과 베드로에게서 복음을 듣고 구원받았다.
모든 수고에는 보상이 따른다. 하지만 수고해도 헛된 삶이 있다. 그것은 주를 믿지 않고 순종하지 않는 삶이다. 그것은 죄된 삶이다. 성경은 말한다. “죄의 삯은 사망이다”(롬 6:23). 죄는 그 일한 보상으로 사망을 받는다. 결국 그것은 무익한 것이다. 믿지 않고 말씀대로 살지 않는 삶에는 유익하고 복된 결과가 없다. 그러한 수고는 자기에게 최후에 고통이 된다. 수고해도 결과가 헛될 때가 있다. 그것은 농사의 경우다. 폭우, 폭풍, 가뭄, 홍수 그리고 병으로 인해서 헛 수고가 된다. 사업이 부도가 나면 헛 수고가 된다.
하지만 수고한대로 얻는 삶이 있다. 항상 보상과 좋은 결과가 있는 삶이다. 사실 우리는 수고한 것보다 더 나은 결과를 원한다. 우리는 시험 공부한 것보다 더 좋은 점수를 원한다. 우리의 수고가 더 좋은 결과를 얻는 비결이 있다. 그것은 믿음으로 순종하는 삶이다. 예수님은 하나님만 경외하며 사셨다. 그래서 주님은 온전히 믿음으로 순종하셨다. 그 결과 주님의 수고는 헛되지 않았다. 주님은 수많은 사람들을 죄와 사망에서 구원하셨다. 주님은 자기의 수고한 것을 만족하게 여기셨다(사 53:11). 여호수아와 갈렙은 믿음의 보상으로 약속의 땅을 기업으로 받았다. 주를 위한 수고는 헛되지 않는다(고전 15:58). 믿음으로 하는 수고는 하늘의 상이 있다. 거기에는 이 세상에서도 복과 형통이 있다. 사도바울의 가장 신실한 제자는 디모데다. 그는 바울과 함께 많은 수고를 했다. 그 결과 그는 큰 보상을 받았다. 디모데 이름으로 된 성경이 2권이다. 우리는 오직 믿음으로 살자. 우리는 주님을 본받아서 말씀대로 살자. 그러면 주님은 약속하신대로 모든 수고가 헛되지 않게 하신다. 동시에 우리의 삶이 복되고 형통하게 해 주신다.
Blessings and Prosperity (Psalms 128:1-2)
People by nature want blessing and prosperity. They do not want things to go wrong, suffer misfortune instead of enjoying blessings, or live in trouble. Everyone hopes for success, fulfillment of their desires, and prosperity. This nature originates from the principle of God, who created humans. God wants the people he created to receive blessings and prosper. And he made people live with such a desire. So he even sent his only Son Jesus to the world. Jesus freed us from the curse of sin and death and gave us the blessing of eternal life. Today’s Scripture tells us about the blessed and prosperous life.
First, blessed is the life of fearing God (v.1). What does it mean to fear God? According to the meaning of the New Testament, it is to obey the Lord by faith. It accompanies living in fear of God who is the ruler and judge of all lives and things. This is possible when we live by faith. Living by faith means we live by trusting in God and considering Jesus to be the only lord over our lives. Fearing God is the perfect life before God. Those who fear God do not trust in the things of this world. They do not stray but remain true to the Lord. Therefore, living by faith is blessed and prosperous. Moreover, to fear God is to obey him. We come to obey because we fear him. We understand that disobedience makes God angry and sorrowful. Adam disobeyed and did not fear God. But Abraham feared God and obeyed. Jesus feared only God. Therefore, he completely obeyed. Obedience is the shortcut to blessings and prosperity (Leviticus 26:1-13; Deuteronomy 28:1-14).
The crux of fearing God is to leave the life of sin. Those who fear do not sin. They make every effort to live a holy and blameless life. On the other hand, those who have no fear live in sin. Sin gets in the way of being blessed and prosperous. Blessing and prosperity are given to those who live a righteous and holy life. Joseph from the Old Testament did not fall into the temptation of Potiphar’s wife and escaped sin. So his life was blessed and prosperous. And he eventually became the governor of Egypt. To fear God is to refrain from evil. Those who fear God fear God’s wrath and judgment and leave sin. They love the Lord and please him. We must leave sin and wickedness and enjoy the blessings and prosperity that God gives.
Second, blessings and prosperity come from living according to the ways of the Lord (v.1). God’s blessings are in trusting only in the Lord and living by his ways. Just as we have roads by which we travel, there is the road of God. It is the path he wants us to take. His path is in his Word. Jesus walked in the way of God. Therefore, blessings and prosperity are in Jesus and his Word. If we believe in Jesus, we receive the blessing of eternal life, and if we don’t believe, we receive eternal punishment. When we follow Jesus’ example and live like him, blessings and prosperity are guaranteed. Jesus lived according to the Word. We should remember that when we leave the Lord and his Word, we leave blessings and prosperity. Therefore, we should enjoy the Bible, read it, and obey it, because in such a life are blessings and prosperity.
God made people live by his Word. Apart from his Word, our lives become meaningless. Such a life is a failure. We will become like Adam who disobeyed and the Israelites who perished in the desert. We must remember: the best and most precious life is living by the word of God. Perfect life that is in accordance with the Lord’s will is in his Word. When we live by his Word, there is success. Therefore, we must take hold of the word of God and live by his ways. We must walk in step with Jesus. We must grasp tightly onto the Lord’s hand and walk along his way. His way is the way of the Word. It is the way of love. His way is good, righteous, and holy. Therefore, we must live by love according to the Word and live a good, righteous, and holy life. Then we will enjoy blessings and prosperity.
Third, obeying in faith is living a fruitful life (v.2). When we have done work, we want the result to be fruitful. All of our efforts are beneficial and prosperous when we fear God and walk in his ways. In all things, there is a cause and result. The result depends on the cause. A result does not get produced without grounds. To reap, we ought to sow. To get water, we need to dig a well. The Bible says we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7-8). If we sow to please our flesh, we reap destruction from the flesh; and if we sow to please the Holy Spirit, we will reap eternal life from the Spirit. All people receive according to what they have done (Matthew 16:27; Romans 2:6; 2 Corinthians 5:10). This is the principle that God has established. When we commit evil, there will be due punishment. Adam’s sin brought about death. When we live righteously, we will have life and peace. Cornelius, who was a Gentile, and his family feared God, gave generously to those in need, and prayed regularly. As a result, he and his family heard the gospel from Peter and were saved.
All labor comes with compensation. However, there is a life where our labor is in vain. This is the life without faith and obedience to the Lord. This is the sinful life. The Bible says, “the wage of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). As a compensation for sin, death is given. This comes to nothing. Life without obedience and faith lacks useful and blessed results. Such effort ultimately becomes a pain. There are times when our labor is in vain. For example, when there is heavy rain, storm, drought, flood, and plague, farming becomes useless. If a business goes bankrupt, it becomes ineffective.
However, there is a life where we gain in proportion to our labor. It is a life where there is always a good result and compensation. In actuality, we want to see better results than the effort we put into something. We want better scores in exams compared to how much we studied. There is a key to getting better results than our effort. That key is to live in obedience by faith. Jesus obeyed God completely by faith. As a result, Jesus was rewarded for his work. The Lord delivered many from sin and death. Jesus was satisfied by his labor (Isaiah 53:11). Joshua and Caleb received the promised land as compensation for their faith. Our labor for the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). The labor that is by faith has a reward in heaven. There are also blessings and prosperity on this earth. The most faithful disciple of Apostle Paul was Timothy. He worked hard with Paul. He received huge compensation as a reward. There are two books of the Bible under the name Timothy. Let us live by faith. Let us imitate the Lord and live according to the Word. Then, the Lord will reward us for all our labor. At the same time, the Lord will make our lives blessed and prosperous.
