너무 기쁠 때는 그 기쁨 때문에 잠이 안 오기도 한다. 재수, 삼수를 해서 원하는 대학에 합격하면 가슴이 벅차고 기쁨이 넘친다. 우리는 살면서 무엇 때문에 기뻐하는가. 왜 기뻐하는가. 기쁨의 근원이 무엇인가 하는 점이다. 본문은 하나님의 응답에 대한 기쁨의 찬양이요 기도다.
한나는 사무엘 선지자의 어머니다. 그는 지금 마음이 기쁘다. 이유는 무엇일까? 기쁨은 마음에서 일어난다. 그래서 마음이 기쁘기도하고 슬프기도 한다. 기쁨과 슬픔은 마음에서 일어나는 감정이다. 우리는 어떤 상황이나 일에 큰 영향을 받는다. 좋은 일은 기쁨과 평안한 마음을 준다. 안 좋은 일은 고통과 괴로운 마음을 준다. 한나는 이전에는 마음이 괴로웠다(삼상 1:10). 그에게는 매우 괴로운 일이 있었기 때문이다. 한나의 대적 브닌나는 한나를 몹시 힘들게 했다. 왜냐하면 아이를 낳지 못하는 한나를 남편이 자기보다 더 사랑했기 때문이다. 그래서 한나는 아프고 원통한 마음으로 하나님께 기도했다. 하나님은 한나의 기도를 들으셨다.
하나님의 응답으로 사무엘이 태어났다. 그래서 지금 한나의 마음은 기쁘다. 사람은 고통스러운 문제가 해결되면 괴로움과 슬픔이 기쁨으로 바뀐다. 시험에 불합격 되면 마음이 괴롭다. 하지만 합격하면 마음이 기쁘고 가볍다. 이스라엘 사람들이 하나님께 불순종했다. 그래서 하나님은 그들에게 벌을 주었다. 그런데 하나님께서 다시 포로에서 돌아 오게 할 때에는 기쁨과 즐거움이 넘쳤다(시 126:1-3). 그저 웃음이 저절로 나왔다.
우리는 무엇 때문에 기뻐하는가. 우리는 돈이나 명예나 권세나 인기 등 세상에 있는 것 때문에 기뻐하는가. 아니면 나의 기쁨은 나를 구원하신 주님 때문인가. 사실 우리에게 가장 큰 문제는 죄와 사망의 문제다. 이 문제는 영원한 슬픔과 고통을 준다. 주님은 이 문제를 해결해 주셨다. 그래서 우리는 구원의 기쁨을 누린다. 그것은 해결할 수 없는 일의 무거운 짐과 고통에서 벗어났기 때문이다. 십자가와 부활의 주님은 나의 기쁨의 근원이다. 성경은 말한다. “비록 무화과나무가 무성하지 못하며 포도나무에 열매가 없으며 감람나무에 소출이 없으며 밭에 먹을 것이 없으며 우리에 양이 없으며 외양간에 소가 없을지라도 나는 여호와로 말미암아 즐거워하며 나의 구원의 하나님으로 말미암아 기뻐하리로다”(하박국 3:17-18). 성도의 기쁨은 주 안에 있다. 그것은 세상에 있지 않다. 세상의 풍부한 것 때문에 기뻐하는 것이 아니다. 우리는 나를 구원하시고 도와 주시고 지켜 주시고 인도하시는 주님 때문에 기뻐해야 한다.
한나는 “내 뿔이 여호와로 말미암아 높아졌다”고 말한다. 뿔은 힘과 능력을 상징한다. 길고 큰 소의 뿔은 힘이 있게 보인다. 그 뿔로 받으면 치명상을 입을 수 있다. 나의 힘과 능력은 무엇인가. 다윗은 “나의 힘이되신 여호와여 내가 주를 사랑하나이다”라고 고백한다. 주님은 다윗의 힘이다. 힘이 되신 주님은 모든 원수로부터 다윗을 구원해 주셨다. 다윗이 어디로 가든지 지켜 주시고 이기게 해 주셨다. 거인 골리앗과 싸워 이긴 힘은 주님께 있었다. 예수님께서 사망의 해를 입지 않고 부활하신 것은 하나님의 권능이었다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 나의 힘과 능력은 주님이시다. 죄와 사망을 이기는 힘은 주님이시다. 영원한 생명의 힘도 주님이시다. 우리의 모든 대적, 세상과 악한 영과 고난과 박해를 이기는 능력은 주님께 있다. 죄악 많은 세상에서 이리 가운데 있는 양 같은 나를 안전하게 지켜 주시는 힘이 주님이시다. 주님은 우리가 어디로 가든지 무엇을 하든지 눈동자 같이 지켜 주신다.
성경은 말한다. “두려워하지 말라 내가 너와 함께 함이라 놀라지 말라 나는 너의 하나님이 됨이라 내가 너를 굳세게 하리라 참으로 너를 도와 주리라 참으로 나의 의로운 오른손으로 너를 붙들어 주리라”(사 41:10). 주님은 사랑하는 자녀인 우리와 항상 함께 해 주시고 굳세게 해주시고 도와 주시고 붙들어 주신다. 그래서 나의 능력과 안전은 주님께 있다. 다니엘이 사자굴에 들어갔다. 주님은 그를 사자가 해치지 못하도록 안전하게 지켜 주셨다.
한나는 주의 구원으로 말미암아 기뻐한다. 성경에서 말하는 구원은 몇 가지가 있다. 첫째는 죄와 사망에서 해방이다. 그 문제는 주님의 십자가와 부활의 권능으로 해결된다. 둘째는 치유와 회복이다. 주님은 많은 병자와 장애인을 치유하셨다. 주님은 38년 된 병자를 낫게 해 주셨다. 그는 주님의 구원을 받았다. 셋째는 고난과 시련의 극복이다. 히스기야 왕은 앗수르 왕 산헤립의 침략에서 주님의 도움으로 벗어났다. 하나님의 천사가 앗수르 군대 185,000을 쳐서 죽게했다. 그래서 히스기야는 전쟁도 하지 않고 승리했다. 예수님의 제자들이 배를 타고 갈릴리 바다를 가다가 큰 풍랑을 만났다. 그 때는 매우 위험한 순간이었다. 주님은 풍랑을 잔잔하게 하셔서 구원해 주셨다. 주님은 여러가지 시련에서 우리를 구원해 내신다. 한나는 해결하기 어려운 고난에서 구원을 받은 것이다.
구원은 항상 기쁨을 준다. 죄와 사망에서의 구원은 영원한 기쁨과 즐거움을 준다. 그것은 천국의 기쁨이다. 문제의 해결은 무거운 짐을 벗는 것처럼 마음의 가벼움과 기쁨을 준다. 히스기야 왕은 병들어 죽게 되었다. 그는 너무 고통스럽고 슬픈 나머지 통곡했다. 하지만 주님이 치료해 주셨을 때, 그는 기쁨의 찬양을 했다. 나를 구원하는 분은 주님이시다. 주님의 구원이 나를 기쁘게 한다. 이 세상에는 구원의 능력을 가진 존재가 없다. 구원은 오직 십자가와 부활의 주 예수 그리스도에게 있다. 그래서 성경은 말한다. “다른 이로서는 구원을 받을 수 없나니 천하 사람 중에 구원 받을 만한 다른 이름을 우리에게 주신 일이 없음이라”(행 4:12).
주님의 구원은 우리 마음에 큰 기쁨을 준다. 괴롭고 고통스런 마음은 사라지고 즐거움 마음을 주는 것은 구원이다. 따라서 우리는 한나처럼 구원의 주님을 의지해야 한다. 우리는 주님을 찾고 구하고 만나야 한다. 주님 앞에 엎드려 기도해야 한다. 더 크로스 김혁건이라는 가수가 있다. 그는 오토바이를 타고 가다가 반대편에서 오는 차량과 정면으로 부딪혔다. 그는 목이 부러지고 숨이 쉬어지지 않았다. 그는 이렇게 죽는구나 생각을 했다고 한다. 전신 마비가 오고 움직일 수가 없었다. 그는 그 때에 너무 무서웠다고 한다. 그는 하염없이 눈물을 흘리면서 괴로워 했다. 그는 좌절 가운데 삶을 포기할 생각도 여러 번 했다. 하지만 그는 주님을 만났고 구원의 은총을 얻었다. 다시금 삶의 의욕과 용기를 회복하여 가수로 활동하고 있다. 나의 기쁨은 주님에게서 온다. 우리는 주님만 의지하며 살자. 그래서 우리는 구원을 얻고 주님의 기쁨을 항상 누리자.
The Source of Joy (1 Samuel 2:1)
When we are overwhelmed with happiness, we even have trouble falling asleep. When we get accepted to a dream college after one or two years of studying for the college entrance exam, we are overjoyed. What are we happy about? Why are we happy? What is the source of our happiness? Today’s Scripture is the praise and prayer of joy in response to God’s answer.
Hannah is the mother of Prophet Samuel. Her heart is joyful now. Joy rises from the heart. The heart may feel happy or sad. Happiness and sadness are emotions that arise from the heart. We are greatly influenced by a situation or incident. Favorable situations give our hearts joy and peace. Troubles, on the other hand, anguish and distress our hearts. Hannah’s heart at first had been in great anguish (1 Samuel 1:10). She was in a distressing circumstance. Her rival Penninah kept provoking her because their husband loved Hannah, who was childless, more than her. So Hannah prayed to God in deep anguish. And God listened to Hannah’s prayer.
Samuel was born to Hannah as a result of God’s answer to her prayer. So right now, Hannah is extremely joyful. When our problems are resolved, anguish and sadness turn to joy. When we fail an exam, we become distressed. However, if we pass, then our hearts are joyful. The Israelites disobeyed God and God punished them. But when he delivered them from captivity, joy and happiness overflowed (Psalms 126:1-3). They smiled spontaneously.
What makes us happy? Are we happy because of money, reputation, power, fame, or other things of this world? Or are we happy because of the Lord who saved me? The biggest problem for us is sin and death. It gives us eternal sadness and anguish. Jesus resolved this problem for us. We enjoy the joy of salvation because we escaped suffering and an unresolvable and heavy burden. Jesus of the cross and the resurrection is the source of our joy. The Bible says, “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the field produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior” (Habakkuk 3:17-18). Believers’ joy is in the Lord and not in the world. We do not rejoice over the abundance of this world. We must be happy because of our Lord who saves, helps, protects, and guides us.
Hannah says, “…in the Lord my horn is lifted high.” Horn represents power and strength. The long and big horn of a cow looks powerful. If anyone is attacked by the horn, it can be fatal. What is our strength and power? David confesses, “I love you, Lord, my strength” (Psalms 18:1-2). The Lord is David’s strength. The Lord who is his strength saved David from all his enemies. Wherever he went, God protected him and enabled him to win. The strength with which he won in the fight against Goliath was with the Lord. Jesus resurrecting without being harmed by death was the power of God. We must remember–our power and strength is the Lord. The strength to overcome sin and death is the Lord. The strength of eternal life is also the Lord. The power to overcome all our enemies, world, evil spirit, suffering, and persecutions is in the Lord. The strength to protect us, who are like lambs among wolves in this sinful world, is the Lord. Our Lord protects us like the apple of an eye wherever we go and whatever we do.
The Bible says, “So do not fear for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Jesus is always with us who are his dear children, and strengthens, helps, and upholds us. Therefore, our strength and safety are in the Lord our God. When Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den, the Lord protected him and did not allow the lions to harm him.
Hannah rejoiced in the Lord’s salvation. The Scripture mentions a few different types of salvation. The first is the salvation of freedom from sin and death. This problem is resolved by the power of the Lord’s cross and the resurrection. The second is the salvation of healing and recovery. The Lord healed many illnesses and disabilities. The Lord healed someone who had suffered for 38 years. He received the Lord’s salvation. Third is the salvation of overcoming hardships and trials. King Hezekiah escaped the invasion of Senacherib, King of Assyria, by the help of the Lord. The army of God’s angels killed 185,000 Assyrian army. Thus, Hezekiah won the battle without even fighting. Jesus’ disciples were met with a huge storm when they were in a ship bound for Galilee. That was a very dangerous moment. However, the Lord calmed the storm and saved them. The Lord saves us from all kinds of trials. Even Hannah was saved from a difficult hardship.
Salvation always brings joy. Salvation from sin and death brings eternal joy. That is the joy of heaven. When a problem is solved, it brings joy like being freed from a heavy burden. King Hezekiah was ill. He was in so much pain that he wept. However, when the Lord healed him, he praised the Lord in joy. The one who saves us is the Lord. The Lord’s salvation makes us rejoice. There is no one else in this world who can save. Salvation is found only in Jesus Christ of the cross and the resurrection. The Bible says, “There is no one else who has the power to save us, for there is only one name to whom God has given authority by which we must experience salvation: the name of Jesus” (Acts 4:12).
The Lord’s salvation brings great joy to our hearts. Salvation makes pain go away and brings a heart of joy. Thus, we must rely on the Lord of salvation like Hannah did. We must seek the Lord and meet him. We must bow before the Lord and pray. There is a singer called the Cross Hyeok-geon Kim. One time, he was on a motorcycle and collided with a car coming from the opposite side. His neck broke and he couldn’t breathe. He thought he would die at that moment. His whole body was paralyzed and he couldn’t move. He said he was very scared. He was weeping in pain. He thought of ending his life in defeat. But he met the Lord and received the grace of salvation. He recovered courage and motivation to live and is now performing as a singer. Our joy comes from the Lord. Let us trust only in the Lord and receive his salvation and rejoice.
