냉냉하고 움츠러들게 하는 기운이 사라지고 따스하고 활기찬 봄이 왔다. 꽁꽁 언 대지가 녹고 시냇물 졸졸 흐르는 약동하는 계절이 왔다. 들에는 새 싹이 나고 앙상한 나무 가지에는 새 순이 돋아나는 희망찬 봄이 왔다. 만물을 지으신 하나님의 섭리에 따라서 봄은 생명이 살아 숨쉬는 희망의 계절이다. 주 안에서 생명의 따스한 빛 가운데 사는 우리에게도 희망이 있다. 그리스도인으로서 우리의 간절한 소망은 무엇인가?
우리는 먼저 모든 일에 부끄럽지 않아야 한다. 주의 피로 죄의 수치에서 벗어난 우리는 하나님 앞에서 부끄럽지 않는 소망을 가져야 한다. 바울은 믿음의 사람으로서 간절한 소망이 있었다. 그것은 어떤 일에든지 부끄럽지 않는 것이다. 그것은 주님의 십자가의 피로 속죄함 받고 거룩하게 되고 구원받은 사람이 갖는 소망이다. 자녀가 잘 못하면 부모님이 욕을 먹는다. 우리가 잘 못하면 십자가의 주님을 수치스럽게 한다. 우리는 항상 나를 위해 죽으시고 살아나신 주님의 은혜를 기억해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님이 나의 삶에서 영화롭게 되고 존귀하게 되기를 힘써야 한다.
우리는 믿음으로 죄의 수치에서 벗어났다. 믿음은 속죄의 권능이 역사하는 영역이다. 믿음은 주님의 십자가의 피를 헛되지 않게 한다. 우리는 믿음으로 죄에서 깨끗하고, 의롭고, 거룩하게 된다. 믿음은 나를 하나님 앞에 당당하게 서게 한다. 따라서 우리는 믿음으로 살아야 한다. 우리는 주님만 의지해야 한다. 그러면 우리는 죄의 수치에서 벗어나게 된다. 믿음은 우리를 의와 거룩한 영광으로 인도한다. 믿음은 십자가의 주님을 영화롭게 하고 기쁘시게 한다(히 11:6).
우리의 소망은 믿지 않는 사람과 달라야 한다. 불신자의 소망은 세상에 속해 있다. 우리의 소망은 보이지 않는 하늘에 속해 있다. 우리는 주 안에서 영적인 소망을 갖고 있다. 바울의 간절한 소망은 위대한 사도가 되는 것이 아니다. 그의 소망은 많은 사람을 모아서 큰 교회를 세우는 것이 아니다. 그는 세계적인 목회자, 유명한 목회자가 되는 소망을 갖지 않았다. 주 안에 있는 우리의 간절한 소망은 무엇인가? 그것은 크게 성공하고 유명해 지고 출세하는 것이 아니다. 우리의 소망은 바울과 같아야 한다. 그것은 내 영과 마음과 생각과 삶이 수치가 없는 것이다. 하나님 앞에서 그리스도 인으로서 바로 서는 것이다. 우리의 몸과 영이 거룩하고 흠이 없는 간절한 소망이다. 우리는 이러한 소망을 가지고 살아야 한다.
또한 우리는 내 몸에서 그리스도가 존귀하게 되는 소망을 가져야 한다. 물론 그것은 내가 죄의 수치가 없을 때 이루어진다. 믿음의 삶은 내가 아니라 나의 구주 예수님을 존귀하게 하는 것이다. 바울의 삶은 멸시와 천대 그리고 낮아진 삶의 연속이었다. 이러한 그의 삶은 주님을 존귀하게 했다. 우리는 내 몸을 가지고 사는 동안에 주님을 존귀하게 해야 한다. 바울은 과거에도 현재도 변함없이 온전히 담대하여 주님을 높여 드리기를 원한다. 죄의 수치를 떠난 삶은 담대함이 있다. 예수님의 속죄가 없었다면 나는 영원히 수치 가운데서 죽는다. 우리는 나를 영원한 죄의 수치에서 영원한 영광으로 인도해 주신 주님을 존귀하게 해야 한다.
우리가 온전히 담대하기 위해서는 하나님 앞에서 마음과 양심이 깨끗해야 한다. 우리는 양심의 자유함과 평안이 있어야 한다. 담대함은 믿음과 순종의 삶에서 나오는 당당함과 확신을 동반한다. 우리는 이 세상에서 살든지 이 세상을 떠나든지 주님을 높여 드려야 한다. 나는 낮아지고 멸시를 받을지라도 주님은 존귀를 받으셔야 한다. 예수님은 자신은 모든 멸시와 천대 그리고 버림을 받으셨다. 하지만 주님은 하나님 아버지를 영화롭게 하셨다(빌 2:8-11). 우리는 주님을 본받아야 한다. 나는 낮아지고 주를 영화롭게 하고 높여 드려야 한다.
바울은 자신이 부끄럽지 않고 온전히 담대하여 항상 주님을 존귀하게 해 드려야 하는 이유를 21절에서 말한다. 그것은 바울에게 있어서 사는 그리스도이기 때문이다. 바울은 고백한다. “내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 산 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사신 것이라”(갈 2:20절 전반). 바울의 옛 사람(예수 믿기 전의 사람)은 십자가에 못 박혀 죽었다. 그래서 그는 더 이상 자기가 산 것이 아니다. 바울 안에는 십자가와 부활의 주님이 살아 계신다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리 안에는 더 이상 내가 살아 있지 않다. 나의 옛 사람, 죄의 사람은 죽었다. 이제는 내 안에 그리스도가 살아 계신다. 우리는 더 이상 나를 위해 살지 않는다. 성경은 말한다. “우리 중에 누구든지 자기를 위해 사는 자도 없고 자기를 위해 죽는 자도 없도다 우리가 살아도 주를 위해 살고 죽어도 주를 위해 죽나니 그러므로 사나 죽으나 우리가 주의 것이로다”(롬 14: 7-9). 우리는 잊지 말아야 한다. 내가 사는 것은 나를 피값으로 사신 주를 위한 것이다. 나에게 사는 것은 오직 그리스도이시다. 우리는 주를 믿음으로 나의 죄된 본성, 예수 믿기 전의 사람은 죽었다. 주님의 피로 죄를 씻음 받을 때에 옛 사람은 죽었다. 이제는 거룩하고 의로운 새 사람이 되었다. 우리는 성령으로 거듭나서 새 마음, 새 영, 새 생명의 사람이 되었다. 우리는 그리스도의 생명으로 영원히 사는 사람이 되었다. 성령으로 거듭난 새 사람이 그리스도 예수의 사람이다. 이 새 사람은 이제 주를 위해 살게 된다. 내 안에는 주님의 영, 생명, 말씀, 의, 거룩함, 구원이 있다. 내가 죽을지라도 주님의 생명, 구원, 의, 그리고 거룩함은 영원하다. 내 안에 계신 주님은 죽지 않는다. 우리는 나의 생명이신 주님과 함께 영원히 천국에서 살게 된다. 그래서 죽는 것은 손실이 아니라 유익이다. 우리의 간절한 소망이 죽음을 통해서 이루어지기 때문이다. 그래서 죽음은 불행도 끝도 아니다. 우리는 내 안에 살아 계시는 그리스도 주님을 존귀하게 해 드리는 간절한 소망을 가지고 살아야 한다.
Eager Hope (Philippians 1:20-21)
The wintry chill that makes us crouch is gone, and warm and lively Spring is here. The season when the frozen earth is thawed and water ripples down the stream has arrived. The Spring of hope when buds grow in the fields and sprouts develop on the scrawny trees is here. According to the Providence of God, who created all things, Spring is a season when life breathes and gives hope. We who live in the warm light of life in Christ also have hope. What is our eager hope as Christians?
We, first of all, must not be ashamed in any way. We must have hope, without shame, before God as those who escaped the shamefulness of sin through the blood of Christ. As a believer, Paul had an eager hope. It was to not be ashamed in any way. This is the hope of the people who were forgiven through the cross of Christ, have become holy, and were saved. When children do not behave, their parents are scorned. Likewise, when we do wrong, Jesus of the Cross is scorned. We ought to always remember the grace of our Lord who died and resurrected for us. And thus, we must make every effort to glorify and honor Jesus through our lives.
We escaped the shame of sin through faith. Faith is a domain in which the power of forgiveness works. Faith does not make Jesus’ blood on the cross futile. We become clean, righteous, and holy from sin through faith. Faith enables us to stand before God with confidence. Therefore, we must live by faith. We must rely only on Jesus. Then we will escape the shame of sin. Faith leads us to righteousness and glory of holiness. It glorifies and pleases the Lord of the Cross (Hebrews 11:6).
Our hope has to be different from that of unbelievers. The hope of unbelievers is based on the world. Our hope is based on heaven which is invisible. We have spiritual hope in the Lord. Paul’s eager hope was to become a great apostle. His hope was not to gather a bunch of people and establish a big church. His hope was not to become a world famous minister. What should be our eager hope in the Lord? It’s not to be successful in the world and become famous and rich. Our hope has to be like that of Paul’s. That hope is to be shameless in mind and thought. It is to stand before God blameless as Christians. It is the eager hope to be holy and blameless in body and spirit. We must live with this hope.
Moreover, we must have the hope to glorify the Lord in our body. Of course, this is only possible when we are without sin. Life of faith is one that glorifies the Lord Jesus, not ourselves. Paul’s life was a continuation of insults, mistreatments, and humiliation. Yet, this life of his glorified the Lord. While we live with our body, we must glorify the Lord. Paul had the hope to glorify the Lord now and always with confidence. Those who have left the shame of sin can be confident. Without Christ’s forgiveness of sins, we would have died in our shame of sin. We must glorify the Lord who delivered us from eternal shame of sin and brought us to eternal glory.
To be completely confident before God, our conscience has to be clear before God. We need to be consciously free and peaceful. Confidence goes hand in hand with certainty from faith and obedience. Whether we live in this world or leave the world, we must glorify the Lord. Even if we are humiliated and insulted, the Lord has to be glorified. Jesus was abandoned, mocked, and mistreated. However, he glorified God the Father (Phillippians 2:8-11). We must become like the Lord. We must lower ourselves and glorify and honor the Lord.
In verse 21, Paul mentions the reason he will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in his body. The reason is that to live is Christ. Paul confesses “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Galatian 2:20). Paul’s old person (before believing in Jesus) was crucified. Thus, it is no longer he who is living. Inside of Paul, the Lord of the cross and the resurrection lives. We must remember that we are no longer the ones living inside ourselves. Our old self, the sinful self, is dead. Now, it is Christ who lives in us. We no longer live for ourselves. The Bible says, “We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s” (Romans 14:7-9). We must not forget that we live to the Lord who redeemed us with the price of his blood. It is only Christ who lives in us. By believing in Jesus, our sinful nature, our old selves before believing in Jesus, dies. When our sins were washed away by the blood of the Lord, our old selves died. Now, we are holy, righteous and new people. We were reborn by the Holy Spirit and possess a new mind, new spirit, and new life. We gained eternal life and live by the life of Christ. The one who is reborn by the Holy Spirit is the person of Jesus Christ. This new person will live for the Lord. In us is the Lord’s spirit, life, word, righteousness, holiness, and salvation. Even if we die, the Lord’s life, salvation, righteousness, and holiness is eternal. The Lord who lives in us never dies. We will live eternally in heaven with the Lord who is our life. Thus, dying is not a loss, but gain. Our most eager hope is accomplished through death. Thus, death is not a misfortune nor the end. We must possess an eager hope to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ who lives in us.
