미국은 50개 주로 구성된 연방국가이다. 헌법에 기초하여 각 주는 주정부로서 자치권이 있다. 각 주에는 주지사가 있고 연방정부의 통제를 받는 주정부가 있다. 그리고 주정부를 통치하는 연방 대통령이 있다. 세상에 있는 국가는 최고 통치자가 있다. 옛날 왕정시대에는 왕이 있었다. 세상 나라의 모든 왕들의 왕이 있다. 오늘 성경은 그것을 보여 준다. 본문은 예수님께서 십자가의 죽음을 앞에 두고 마지막으로 예루살렘에 입성하는 내용이다. 예수님은 베다니 마을에 가까이 오셨다. 그 때에 예수님은 제자들을 보내셔서 나귀를 풀어 오라고 말씀하셨다.
예수님은 나귀 위에 타고 가셨다. 사람들은 나귀 위에 자기들의 옷을 두었다. 이것은 메시아로서 그리스도 예수님께 대한 예우이다. 왕이 타는 말 등에는 최고의 고급스런 천을 두었다. 하지만 예수님은 평범한 사람들이 입는 옷 위에 앉으셨다. 주님은 세상의 화려함과 영화를 추구하지 않으셨다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 세상의 길이 아닌 예수님의 길을 가는 사람들이다. 따라서 우리는 세상의 영화를 추구해서는 안된다.
예수님은 나귀 새끼를 타셨다. 옛날 왕들은 가장 좋은 말을 탔다. 천지만물은 말씀이신 예수님으로 말미암아 창조되었다. 창조자의 권능을 가지신 예수님은 지극히 작은 피조물인 나귀 새끼를 타셨다. 여기서 우리는 주님이 주시는 교훈을 배워야 한다. 먼저 주님은 말씀을 순종하셨다. 예수님이 나귀 새끼를 타신 것은 스가랴 9장 9절의 말씀을 순종하신 것이다. “시온의 딸아 크게 기뻐할지어다 예루살렘의 딸아 즐거이 부를지어다 보라 네 왕이 네게 임하시나니 그는 공의로우시며 구원을 베푸시며 겸손하여서 나귀를 타시나니 나귀의 작은 것 곧 나귀 새끼니라” 주님은 하나님 말씀을 실천하며 이루시기 위해서 최선을 다하셨다. 우리도 주님을 본받아야 한다. 주님의 말씀을 순종하며 성취하는 삶을 살아야 한다. 이것이 주님 앞에서 최선의 삶이라는 것을 기억해야 한다. 또한 예수님께서 나귀 새끼를 타신 것은 겸손을 보여 준다. 예수님은 얼마든지 크고 좋은 말을 타실 수 있다. 하지만 주님은 그렇게 하지 않으셨다. 주님은 낮은 자리에 서시고 낮은 사람들과 함께 하셨다. 우리도 주님의 마음을 가져야 한다. 우리는 겸손한 마음으로 낮은 자리에 서야 한다.
사람들은 예수님이 가시는 길에 자기들의 겉옷과 종려나무 가지를 깔았다. 이것이 종려주일의 유래이다. 지금은 국가 원수가 방문할 때에는 레드카펫을 깐다. 사람들은 하나님의 아들 구주 예수님에 대한 예우로 옷을 깔았다. 우리는 마음으로부터 예수님을 영접해야 한다. 주님이 항상 우리 마음에 구주요 왕으로 있게 해야 한다.
예수님의 제자들은 주님이 행하신 능력과 기적을 직접 보았다. 그들은 예수님이 물 위를 걸으시고, 물로 포도주를 만드시고, 바람을 잔잔하게 하고, 오병이어로 5000명을 먹이시고, 죽은 자를 살리시고, 각종 병을 고치시는 것을 보았다. 그래서 그들은 주님의 증인이 되었다. 제자들은 주님이 행하신 기적을 보고 기뻐하며 큰 소리로 찬양하였다. 주님이 행하신 일은 우리의 구주로서 사역이다. 그것은 어떤 사람도 할 수 없는 구주만의 사역이다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 기적을 생각하면서 찬양해야 한다. 예수님은 십자가와 부활의 능력으로 나를 죄와 사망에서 건지셨다. 우리는 주님의 권능을 기억하며 모든 기쁨으로 주님을 찬양해야 한다. 주님은 우리의 영원한 기쁨이 되시기 때문이다. 주님은 모든 사람과 만물의 찬양 받으실 분이다. 우리를 구원하신 주님을 찬양하는 것은 지극히 선하고 마땅한 일이다.
38절은 찬양 내용이다. 예수님은 주의 이름으로 오셨다. 십자가와 부활의 예수님이 주님이시다. 구약에서는 여호와 하나님을 ‘주’라고 불렀다. 신약에서는 예수님을 ‘주’라고 부른다. 예수님은 하나님과 동등이시다. 예수님은 만물의 주이시다. 예수님은 모든 사람의 주이시다(빌 2:5-11). 예수님만이 사람을 죄에서 구원하시는 구주이시다. 다른 주는 없다. 그래서 성경은 예수님을 ‘만주의 주’라고 말한다(계 17:14). 우리는 예수님을 주님이라고 부른다. 주의 이름에는 구원의 권능이 있다(롬 10:13). 우리는 예수님만 구주로 믿고 섬겨야 한다. 왜냐하면 다른 주는 없기 때문이다.
예수님은 왕으로 오셨다. 예수님은 유대인의 왕이시다. 예수님은 모든 사람의 왕이시다. 예수님은 만물의 머리이시며 만 왕의 왕이시다. 만왕의 왕이신 예수님은 평강의 왕이시다. 하늘의 평화를 이 땅에 가져 오셨다. 주님은 하나님과 우리 사이에 막힌 죄의 담을 무너뜨리셨다. 그 결과 이 세상에 평화를 가져 왔다. 주님의 평안이 믿는 우리에게 함께 하신다(요 14:27). 우리는 평강의 주님을 높이고 찬양해야 한다. 예수님은 영광의 주님이시다. 하늘과 땅에 있는 모든 존재들은 주님께 영광을 돌려야 한다. 주님은 영광 중에 계시기 때문이다. 예수님은 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 삶을 사셨다. 그래서 하나님은 주님을 영화롭게 하셨다. 또한 주님은 우리가 하나님과 주님을 영화롭게 하는 삶을 살게 하셨다. 우리는 주님이 하나님 아버지를 영화롭게 하신 것처럼 주님을 영화롭게 해야 한다. 주님의 영광을 위해 살아야 한다. 오직 주님께만 영광을 돌려야 한다. 모든 영광은 주님이 받으셔야 하기 때문이다.
King of Kings (Luke 19:35-38)
The United States is a federal republic composed of fifty states. Each state has state autonomy through its own government based on the Constitution. Each state has a governor and a government which is regulated by the federal government. And there is the president that governs the state governments. In this world, there is the highest ruler. In the monarchy era, there were kings. Now there is a king who is the king over all kings on earth. Today’s passage shows this. It is about Jesus entering Jerusalem for the last time before dying on the cross. He came near Bethany, and he sent his disciples to untie and bring a colt.
Jesus got on the colt and headed to Jerusalem. People placed their cloaks on the colt. They were treating Christ Jesus with respect as the Messiah. On horses that kings ride, the highest quality material is placed on the seat. However, Jesus rode on cloaks that people wore. Jesus did not pursue the splendor and glory of the world. We must remember–we do not walk the way of the world but the way of Jesus. Thus, we should not seek the glory of the world.
Jesus rode the foal of a donkey. In the past, kings rode the best of the horses. All things in heaven and earth were created through Jesus. Jesus, who has the power of creation, rode a lowliest of creatures, a colt. Here we must learn Jesus’ teaching. Jesus first and foremost obeyed the Word. Jesus riding a colt is obedience to the word written in Zechariah 9:9: “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Jesus made every effort to live and fulfill the word of God. We must follow his example. We must obey the Word and fulfill it. We must remember that such life is the best life before the Lord. Moreover, Jesus riding on a colt shows humility. Jesus could have ridden a strong and the best horse. However, Jesus did not choose to do so. He stood with and lived among the lowly of people. We also must have the mind of Jesus. We should humble and lower ourselves.
People laid their cloaks and palm branches on the ground for Jesus. This is the origin of Palm Sunday. Today, when the president visits, people roll out the red carpet. As a courtesy toward Jesus Christ, the Son of God, people spread their cloaks. We must welcome Jesus from our heart and have him as our Savior and king in our heart.
Jesus’ disciples saw all the power and miracles he performed. They saw Jesus walking on water, turning water into wine, calming the storm, feeding five thousand with five loaves and two fish, raising the dead, and healing all kinds of sicknesses. So they rejoiced and gave praise loudly. All the work that Jesus did was his ministry as the Savior. They were the work that none other but only the Savior could do. Therefore, we also must give praise to the Lord by remembering Jesus’ miracles. Jesus saved us from sin and death through the power of the cross and resurrection. We must remember all his power and praise him with great joy, because Jesus is our eternal joy. Jesus is the One worthy of praise from all people and things on earth. Praising the Lord who saved us is the most good and appropriate thing to do.
Verse 38 is the content of the praise. Jesus came in the name of the Lord. Jesus of the cross and resurrection is the Lord. In the Old Testament, God was called the Lord. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the Lord. God and Jesus are equal. Jesus is the Lord of all things. He is the Lord of all people (Philippians 2:5-11). Only Jesus is the Lord who saves people from sin. There is no other lord. Therefore, the Bible refers to Jesus as the Lord of lords (Revelations 17:14). We call Jesus our Lord. There is the power of salvation in the name of the Lord (Romans 10:13). We must believe in Jesus as the Savior and serve him only, because there is no other lord.
Jesus came as king. He is the king of the Jews. He is the king of all people. He is the head of all things and the King of kings. Jesus, the King of kings, is the King of peace. He brought heavenly peace to the earth. He crushed the wall of sin that was between us and God. As a result, he brought peace. The peace of Christ is with us who believe (John 14:27). And we must exalt and praise the Lord of peace. Jesus is the Lord of glory. All things in heaven and on earth must give glory to the Lord because he dwells in glory. Jesus lived a life that glorifies God. Therefore, God glorified Jesus. Moreover, the Lord made us live a life that glorifies God and the Lord Jesus. We must glorify the Lord just as he glorified God the Father. We must live for Jesus’ glory and give glory to him only. Only our Lord is worthy to receive all glory.
