야생 사과나무를 참 사과나무에 접을 붙이면, 참 사과나무의 수액을 받아서 참 사과를 맺는다. 죄와 허물로 죽은 우리가 주 예수 그리스도를 믿으면, 참 포도나무이신 예수님께 붙은 가지가 된다(요 15:5). 포도나무의 가지인 우리는 포도나무이신 예수님의 생명을 수여 받는다. 그 결과 우리는 참 포도열매를 맺는다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 우리가 주님과 함께 죽고 함께 사는 길을 말한다.
8절은 우리가 그리스도와 함께 죽고, 함께 사는 것을 말한다. 죄로 말미암아 죽은 우리가 영원히 살기 위해서는 생명이신 그리스도와 함께 죽어야 한다. 그리스도는 하나님의 아들 구주이시며, 생명이요 부활이시다(요 11:25-26). 따라서 그리스도를 떠나서는 죄인 된 인간에게는 생명이 없다. 성경은 말한다. “미쁘다 이 말이여 우리가 주와 함께 죽었으면 또한 함께 살 것이요”(딤후 2:11). 우리가 살기 위해서는 구주요 생명이신 그리스도와 생사를 같이 해야 한다. 우리는 십자가와 부활의 주님과 공동운명체다. 우리는 죽고 사는 것을 주님과 함께 한다.
우리는 먼저 그리스도와 함께 죽어야 한다. 그런 다음에 우리는 그리스도와 함께 산다. 십자가의 죽음이 먼저 오고 다음에 부활이 온다. 그래서 우리는 십자가의 주님과 함께 먼저 죽어야 한다. 죄와 허물로 죽은 우리는 죽지 않으면 살 수 없다. 그리스도께서 죽으실 때에 나의 옛 사람이 죽었다. 주님의 십자가는 죄의 사람이 죽은 것을 의미한다. 우리는 십자가의 피의 속죄와 함께 옛 사람을 벗어버리고 새 사람을 입는다(골 3:10). 우리는 죄의 사람에서 하나님의 형상으로 새 사람이 되었다. 주님의 십자가와 부활은 나의 옛 사람이 죽고 영원히 사는 길이다(요 11:26). 예수님이 죽으실 때에 내가 죽고 예수님이 부활하실 때에 나도 주님의 새 생명으로 산다(롬 6:4). 우리는 주를 믿음으로 주님과 생사를 같이 한다.
주님은 죽은 자 가운데서 부활하셨다(9절). 사람들은 한 번은 죽는다(히 9:27). 그것은 정해진 운명이다. 그래서 모든 사람은 죽는다. 사람으로 오신 성자 예수님도 죽으셨다. 하지만 생명이요 부활이신 예수님은 죽은 사람들 가운데서 다시 사셨다. 그리고 주님은 다시 죽지 않았다. 이것이 참 부활이다. 생명이요 부활이신 주님은 죽음의 권세를 이기시고 살아 나셨다. 그래서 사망이 다시 주님을 주장하지 못한다(9절). 예수님은 사망에 매여 있을 수 없다. 죽음의 권세가 생명의 주님을 이기지 못한다. 죽음의 권세보다 생명의 권세가 더 강하다. 생명의 주님은 죽음을 압도하고 지배한다. 예수님의 몸은 무덤에서 썩지 않았다(행 13:37). 주님은 말씀하신다. “내가 전에 죽었었노라 볼지어다 이제 세세토록 살아 있어 사망과 음부의 열쇠를 가졌노니”(계 1:18). 부활하신 주님은 사망을 지배하고 다스릴 권세를 가지셨다. 주님과 함께 사는 영원한 생명은 사망의 권세를 이긴다. 그래서 주님의 생명으로 사는 우리도 사망이 주장하지 못한다.
10절은 예수님이 죽으신 이유와 부활의 성격을 묘사한다. 예수님은 왜 죽으셨을까. 주님의 십자가의 죽음은 죄 때문이다. 그것은 속죄를 위한 죽음이다. 예수님이 죽으시지 않으면 죄는 해결되지 않는다. 그리고 우리는 죄 가운데서 영원히 죽는다. 주님은 나의 모든 죄를 대신 짊어지고 죽으셨다. 예수님이 죽으시면서 흘린 피가 내 죄를 씻는다. 예수님은 우리 죄를 위하여 십자가에서 단 번에 죽으셨다. 그 주님은 영원한 속죄를 이루셨다. 죽음의 권세를 이기시고 부활하신 주님은 하나님께 대하여 살아 계신다. 부활하신 주님은 하나님의 말씀대로 살아 나셨다(고전 15:4). 그래서 주님은 하나님과 함께 영원히 살아 계신다. 주님은 하나님 아버지의 보좌 우편에 앉아 계신다.
11절은 10절의 적용이다. 주님께서 하나님께 대하여 살아 계신 것처럼, 우리도 죄에 대해서는 죽은 자요 하나님께 대하여는 살아 있는 사람이다. 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 우리에게는 주님의 십자가와 부활의 권능이 나타난다. 그래서 우리 자신도 죄에 대해서는 주님과 함께 죽은 것으로 생각해야 한다. 주님의 죽으심은 죄에 대한 죽음이기 때문이다. 믿음으로 의롭다함을 얻고 영생 얻은 나는 죄에 대하여 죽었다. 죽었다는 것은 생명과 활동이 없다는 뜻이다. 우리 안에는 죄에 대한 감각과 움직임이 없어야 한다. 왜냐하면 우리는 죄에 대하여 죽었기 때문이다. 죽은 죄가 다시 활동하지 못하게 해야 한다.
그리스도와 함께 죽고 사는 우리는 하나님께 대하여 살아 있다. 이것은 우리가 죄와 사망의 권세에서 벗어났다는 의미다. 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 생명의 성령의 법이 죄와 사망의 법에서 나를 해방하였다(롬 8:1-2). 우리는 죄의 법의 지배를 받지 않는다. 성령으로 거듭난 생명의 법의 지배를 받는다. 그래서 우리는 부활하신 주님과 함께 영원히 살게 된다. 우리는 살아 계신 하나님을 예배하고 섬기고 찬양한다. 이것은 우리가 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님께 대하여 살아 있다는 증거다. 영적으로 살아 있어야 생명의 하나님께 대하여 산다. 영원히 살아 계신 하나님과 함께 살기 위해서는 부활하신 주님의 생명이 있어야 한다. 우리는 그 생명으로 하나님과 영원히 사는 존재가 된다. 십자가와 부활의 주님과 함께 죽고 함께 사는 은혜를 주신 하나님께 영광을 돌려 드리자. 우리는 나의 생명이신 주님과 함께 죄에 대해서 죽고 하나님께 대해서 산자로 여기며 살자.
Living With Jesus (Romans 6:8-11)
When you graft an inedible wild apple tree to a cultivated apple tree, it receives the sap from the cultivated apple tree and bears a cultivated apple. When we, who died from sin and transgressions, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, we become branches that are grafted to Jesus, who is the true vine (John 15:50). As branches of the vine, we receive the life of Jesus. As a result, we bear true fruits of a vine. Today’s passage talks about the way to die and live with Jesus.
Verse 8 is about dying with Jesus and living with him. For us who died due to sin to live eternally, we must die with Jesus the Life. Jesus is the Son of God, the Savior, the life and the resurrection (John 11:25-26). Therefore, apart from Christ, there is no life in humans the sinners. The Bible says, “Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him” (2 Timothy 2:11). To live, we must participate in the life and death of Christ, who is the Savior and life. We must first die with Christ. And then we will live with him. Death on the cross comes first and then the resurrection. Therefore, we must first die with Jesus of the cross. If we, who died in sin and transgressions, don’t die, then we cannot live. When Christ died, our old selves died. The cross of the Lord signifies the death of the sinful self. Through the forgiveness from the blood of the cross, we take off our old self and put on a new self (Colossians 3:10). We transformed from a sinful self to a new self in the image of God. Jesus’ cross and resurrection are the ways for our old self to die and live eternally (John 11:26). When Jesus died, we died and when Jesus resurrects, we also will live a new life of the Lord (Romans 6:4). Through faith in Christ, we participate in the death and life of our Lord.
Jesus was raised to life from the dead (9). People die once (Hebrews 9:27). This is how we were created. Therefore, all people die. Even Jesus, the Son of God who came in the flesh, died. However, Jesus, who is the life and the resurrection, resurrected from the dead. And he never died again. This is the true resurrection. Our Lord, who is the life and resurrection, overcame the power of death and was raised to life. So death no longer has reign over him (9). He cannot be bound to death. The power of death cannot overcome Jesus the Life. The power of life is stronger than the power of death. The Lord of life prevails and rules over death. Jesus’ body did not decay in the grave (Acts 13:37). Jesus says, “…I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades” (Revelations 1:18). Jesus, who resurrected, holds the power to rule over death. The eternal life of living with Jesus overcomes the power of death. So death has no control over us who live through the life of Jesus.
Verse 10 describes the reason for Jesus dying and the characteristics of resurrection. Why did Jesus die? Jesus’ death on the cross was because of sin. It was the death for forgiveness of sins. If Jesus does not die, sin cannot be resolved. And we will die eternally in sin. Jesus bore all of our sins for us and died. The blood that Jesus shed on the cross cleanses our sins. Jesus died on the cross once for our sins. Our Lord fulfilled eternal forgiveness of sins. Jesus, who overcame the power of death and resurrected, lives to God. Jesus of the resurrection was raised according to the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:4). Thus, Jesus lives with God forever. He is sitting on the right hand of the throne of God the Father.
Verse 11 is the application of verse 10. As Jesus lives to God, we died to sin and live to God. To us who believe in Jesus Christ our Lord, the power of Jesus’ cross and resurrection is revealed. Therefore, we ought to consider ourselves having died to sin with Jesus, because his death was death to sin. We who gained righteousness through faith and obtained eternal life died to sin. Died means there is no longer life or activity. In other words, we should not have any sense or motion in regard to sin, because we died to sin. We should not allow sin, which died, to become active.
We who died and live with Jesus live to God. This means we have escaped the power of sin and death. The law of the Spirit and life in Jesus Christ has set us free (Romans 8:1-2). We no longer are reigned by the law of sin. We are reigned by the law of life that was born again through the Holy Spirit. Therefore, we will live eternally with the Lord who was raised to life. We must worship, serve, and praise God who is living. This is proof that we live to God in Christ Jesus. We must be living spiritually for us to live to the God of life. To live with God, who lives eternally, we must have in us the life of the Lord who resurrected. We become beings that live eternally with God through the life of Jesus. Let us give glory to God who gave us the grace to die and live with Jesus of the cross and resurrection. Let us consider ourselves as those who have died to sin and now live to God with Jesus our life.
