한 초등학생이 체격이 큰 친구에게 폭행을 당한다. 그는 힘으로는 그를 이길 수 없다. 그런데 한 가지 방법이 있다. 자기 엄마가 그 아이의 힘이 되어 준다. 엄마는 태권도 유단자다. 그래서 그 아이는 엄마한테 이야기 했다. 엄마는 폭행한 아이에게 다시는 그러지 말라고 경고한다. 그 이후로는 아기가 폭행을 당하지 않는다. 그 아이는 엄마가 힘이되고 의지가 되었다. 우리는 살면서 의지할 대상이 필요하다. 오늘 성경은 그것을 말한다.
39절은 의인들의 ‘구원은 여호와께로부터 온다’고 말한다. 의인은 무엇인가. 이 세상에는 여러 종류의 사람이 있다. 선인도 있고 악인도 있다. 진실한 사람도 있고 그렇지 못한 사람도 있다. 사람들은 마음과 행위가 선한 사람을 선인이라고 부른다. 마음과 행위가 악한 사람은 악인이라고 부른다. 선과 악은 마음에서 나오기 때문이다. 오늘 성경은 의인에 대해서 말한다. 의인은 의로운 사람을 말한다. 이 세상 기준과 가치관에 따라서 의로운 사람이 있다. 사람들은 곤경과 위험에 처한 사람을 도와 주고 구해준 사람을 의인이라고 부른다.
하지만 성경의 기준은 다르다. 성경은 그리스도 예수 안에서 의인과 죄인을 구분한다. 이것은 하나님께서 제시하는 기준이다. 의인은 죄인의 반대 개념이다. 성경은 모든 사람은 본성적으로 죄인이라고 말한다(롬 3:10-12; 롬 5:12; 엡 2:3). 죄인이 의인이 되기 위해서는 죄에서 벗어나야 한다. 그 죄가 속죄함을 받아야 한다. 인간이 죄에서 깨끗하게 되기 위해서는 믿음이 있어야 된다. 죄는 인간의 행위나 노력으로 해결되지 않는다. 죄는 오직 주 예수 그리스도의 십자가의 피로 깨끗하게 된다. 주님의 피의 속죄는 주 예수를 믿음으로 이루어진다. 사람은 믿음으로 의롭게 된다. 이 의는 하나님의 의를 말한다. 하나님의 의는 주님의 십자가와 부활에 나타났다. 죄인이 주를 믿음으로 하나님의 의가 주어진다. 그것은 곧 속죄를 의미한다. 믿음으로 속죄함을 받은 사람이 의롭다 함을 얻고 의인된다. 따라서 의인들은 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 사람들이다.
우리는 믿음으로 구원 받는다. 주님은 구원 받은 우리가 역시 믿음으로 살 때에 구원해 주신다. 우리에게는 구원자가 필요하다. 그 분이 여호와요 주님이시다. 구원자는 구원하는 능력이 있어야 한다. 이 세상에는 사람을 구원할 구원자가 없다. 오직 주님만이 구원자다(사 43:11;사 45:21; 호 13:4; 행 4:12; 롬 10:13). 주님은 죄와 사망에서 우리를 구원할 능력이 있다. 주님은 우리의 모든 시련과 고난 중에서 구원할 능력이 있다. 우리는 믿음으로 구원을 얻고 또 믿음으로 산다. 구원은 믿음을 통해서 온다. 그래서 믿는 자는 하나님의 의로 살면서 구원이 보장된 삶을 산다.
요셉은 매우 큰 고난을 당했다. 하지만 그는 믿음으로 살았다. 그는 종으로 팔려 갈 때나 억울하게 감옥에 들어갈 때에도 믿음으로 살았다. 그래서 하나님은 그를 구원해 주었다. 그는 감옥생활 중에 애굽의 총리가 되었다. 다윗은 수많은 고난을 겪었다. 그는 이유없이 박해를 받았다. 그는 사랑하는 아들이 반란을 일으키는 시련을 당했다. 하지만 하나님은 그의 요새가 되셨다. 우리의 삶에는 여러 가지의 수많은 고난이 있다. 병으로 인한 고난, 정신적이고 심리적인 고난, 영적인 고난, 재정적인 고난, 자녀로 인한 고난, 인간 관계 속에서 사람들로 인한 고난도 있다. 이러한 고난 가운데서 누가 안전하게 지켜 줄 것인가. 유일한 요새는 십자가와 부활의 주님이시다. 주님은 나의 요새다. 주님은 어떠한 대적이나 공격도 방어할 수 있는 난공불락의 요새다.
요새는 적으로부터 안전하게 보호해 주는 역할을 한다. 주님은 죄와 사망의 공격으로부터 우리를 막아준다. 주님은 세상의 유혹과 수많은 시련으로부터 보호해 주는 요새다. 여호사밧 왕은 하나님을 잘 믿고 순종했다. 하나님은 그의 요새가 되었다. 적군의 공격이 있었지만, 어떠한 해도 받지 않았다. 하나님은 그의 편이 되셔서 대적을 치셨다. 그래서 그는 싸움도 하지 않고 전쟁에서 승리했다. 우리가 믿음으로 살 때에 주님은 모든 공격으로부터 우리를 지키신다. 그래서 우리가 해를 받지 않게 하신다. 고난은 있지만 그 고난이 우리를 넘어뜨리거나 해치지 못한다. 왜냐하면 주님이 나의 요새가 되기 때문이다.
피조물로서 먼지 같은 우리에게는 도움이 필요하다. 인간은 도움 없이 살 수 없다. 하나님은 도움을 필요로 하는 존재로 사람을 만드셨다. 누가 나를 도울 것인가. 여호와 하나님 곧 주님이시다. 성경은 “우리의 도움은 천지를 지으신 여호와의 이름에 있도다”(시 124:8)라고 말한다. 또한 주님은 “참으로 너를 도와 주리라”(사 41:10)고 말한다. 주님은 위기의 순간에, 도움이 필요할 때에 도우신다. “우리가 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나갈 것이니라”(히 4:16). 우리는 도움이 필요할 때에 주님 앞에 나가야 한다. 나를 도우시는 주님께 도움을 구해야 한다. 나를 도와 주시고 건져 주시는 분이 주님이시다.
주님은 우리를 악한 자에게서 구원하신다. 이 세상에는 악한 사람들이 있다. 마음과 생각이 악하여 악을 행하는 사람들이 있다. 이들은 남을 괴롭히고 해친다. 다윗은 수많은 악한자들부터 구원 받았다. 사도 바울도 자신을 해치고 죽이려는 악한자들로부터 구원을 받았다. 주님은 자기를 의지하는 사람을 구원하신다. 우리는 나를 구원하시는 주님만 오직 주님만 의지해야 한다. 우리는 주님께 나아가 엎드려 기도해야 한다. 우리는 믿음으로 주를 순종해야 한다. 그러면 주님은 나를 구원해 주신다.
Trusting in the Lord (Psalms 37:39-40)
An elementary school student was bullied by a peer who was bigger than him. He was strengthless to fight back. But he had an idea. His mom was his defender. She holds a black belt in Taekwondo. So he told his mom about how he’s being treated by a kid at school. Hearing this, his mom went to the kid and warned him not to bully her son. Since then, her son was no longer bullied by the kid. The mother was a huge strength and defense for the kid who was bullied. As we live on, we need someone to trust, and today’s passage talks about it.
Verse 39 says, “The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord.” Who are the righteous? There are many types of people in the world. There are good people and bad people; people who are truthful and those who are not. We call those good whose hearts and actions are good. We call those evil whose hearts and actions are evil. Good and evil come from the heart. Today’s passage talks about the righteous. The righteous refers to those who are upright. There are people who are upright based on worldly standards and values. People usually call those who help others who are in hardship or danger, righteous.
However, the standard of the Bible differs. The Bible differentiates the righteous and the sinner in Jesus Christ. This is the standard that God presents. The righteous is contrary to the sinner. The Bible says that all people are by nature sinners (Romans 3:10-12; Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:3). For a sinner to become righteous, they must escape from sin. Their sins must be forgiven. For a person to be cleansed from their sins, they must have faith. Sin cannot be resolved through one’s action or effort. It can be cleansed only through the blood of the cross of Jesus Christ. And the forgiveness through the blood of Christ comes about through faith in the Lord Jesus. A person becomes righteous through faith. Righteous here refers to the righteousness of God. God’s righteousness was revealed through the cross and resurrection of the Lord. God’s righteousness is given to sinners through faith in Christ Jesus. This means forgiveness of sins. Those who receive forgiveness of sins through faith become righteous. Thus, the righteous are those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
We are saved by faith. Jesus delivers us, who are saved, when we live by faith. We need a savior. Our Savior is the Lord our God. The savior must have the power to save. There is no other savior in this world who can save people. Only Jesus is the Savior (Isaiah 43:11; Isaiah 45:21; Hosea 13:4; Acts 4:12; Romans 10:13). Jesus has the power to save us from sin and death. He has the power to save us from all trials and hardships. We are saved through faith and live by faith. Salvation comes through faith. Therefore, the believers live by God’s righteousness and are guaranteed salvation.
Joseph faced a huge adversity. However, he lived by faith. When he was sold as a slave, or when he was unjustly imprisoned, he lived by faith. So God delivered him. During imprisonment, he was promoted to the governor of Egypt. Likewise, David went through many trials. He was persecuted without reason. In one of the persecutions, his son whom he loved revolted. However, God became his refuge. We also go through many different types of hardships. It may be related to health, mentality, psychology, spirit, finances, children, or relationship with others. Who will keep us safe from these difficulties? Our one and only refuge is the Lord of the cross and resurrection. Jesus is our refuge. He is an unassailable refuge that can defend us from any and all enemies or attacks.
Refuge protects people from the enemy. Jesus protects us from the attacks of sin and death. He is our refuge that protects us from the world’s temptations and many trials. King Jehoshaphat believed in God and obeyed him. So God became his refuge. His enemies laid siege but he was in no way harmed. God was on his side and destroyed his enemies. So he won the war without even having to fight. When we live by faith, Jesus protects us from all attacks and keeps us from being harmed. Although there are hardships, they cannot make us stumble or harm us because Jesus is our refuge.
We who are like dust need help. People cannot live without help. God made people helpless. Who will help us? It is God our Lord. The Bible says, “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalms 124:8). Moreover, God says “I will strengthen you and help you” (Isaiah 41:10). God helps us when we are in danger and need help. “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). We must approach God when we are in need. We must ask the Lord, who is our Helper, for help. The One who helps and delivers us is God.
The Lord delivers us from evil people. In this world, there are many wicked people. Their hearts and thoughts are evil and act wickedly. They harass and harm others. David was delivered from many wicked people. Paul was also delivered from many evil people who tried to kill him. Jesus saves those who trust in him. We ought to trust only in Jesus who delivers us. We must approach God and pray to him. We must obey with faith. Then our Lord will deliver us.
