사람이 살아가는 데 중요하고 필요한 삶의 근간이 되는 것이 건강이다. 그래서 사람들은 본능적으로 건강하기를 원한다. 우리가 건강하지 못하면 불편하고 일상생활이 힘들게 된다. 움직이는 것이 마음과 뜻대로 안된다. 평소 건강하던 사람이 갑자기 뇌졸중으로 쓰러지면 엄청난 충격과 함께 일상생활이 멈춘다. 이렇게 건강은 삶에 매우 큰 영향을 끼친다. 오늘 성경은 히스기야 왕의 병과 치유에 관한 내용이다.
1절에 보면 히스기야 왕이 병들어 죽게 되었다. 그는 다윗 왕의 후손으로 유다의 왕이다. 히스기야 왕은 하나님을 잘 섬기고 정직하게 행한 왕이다. 그런데 그가 병들어 죽게 되었다. 병은 몸에 이상이 생겼다는 의미다. 우리 몸은 병이 없을 때와 있을 때에 큰 차이가 있다. 또한 병은 여러 가지다. 작은 병, 큰 병, 회복 가능한 병, 불치병, 지병 등이 있다. 히스기야의 병은 죽을 병이다. 죽는다는 것은 삶의 끝을 의미한다. 죽음은 사람에게 정해진 운명이다(히 9:27). 죽음은 인간의 능력 밖의 일이다. 그래서 모든 사람은 죽음에 굴복한다.
이사야 선지자가 히스기야 왕에게 왔다. 그는 하나님의 말씀을 전했다. “너는 유언하라. 네가 죽고 살지 못하리라” 하나님은 히스기야에게 ‘네가 죽을 것이니 유언하라’는 청천병력과 같은 말씀을 하셨다. 수많은 사람들이 지금도 병으로 죽는다. 히스기야는 운명은 지금 죽는 것이다. 하지만 우리는 기억해야 한다. 죽고 사는 것은 하나님께 있다. 하나님은 죽음과 생명의 권능이 있다. 그래서 하나님은 사람을 죽이기도 하고 살리기도 하신다. 예수님은 죽은 소녀와 나사로를 살렸다. 히스기야의 죽고 사는 것은 주님께 속해 있다. 그는 이 말을 들었을 때에 엄청난 두려움과 고통을 느꼈을 것이다. 이 불가항력적인 상황에서 어떻게 해야 할까요. 우리는 히스기야의 믿음을 배워야 한다.
그는 먼저 하나님 앞에 엎드려 기도했다. 그는 자포자기 하지 않았다. 그는 의사를 찾지 않았다. 그는 자기의 생명과 건강을 좌우하시는 하나님께 기도했다. 우리는 건강 문제가 있을 때에 먼저 주님을 찾아야 한다. 우리는 주 앞에 엎드려 기도해야 한다. 우리 자신을 하나님 앞에서 살펴야 한다. 우리는 허물과 죄를 낱낱이 고백하며 회개해야 한다. 그러면서 구원하시고 치유하시는 주님께 간절히 기도해야 한다. 우리는 치유의 주님께서 낫게 해 주시기를 기도해야 한다.
히스기야는 자신이 주 앞에서 진실하고 선하게 행한 것을 기억해 주시라고 통곡하며 기도했다(3절). 그는 주님의 말씀을 순종하고 정직하게 행했다. 진실과 선함은 인간에게 있지 않다. 그것은 진실하시고 선하신 하나님께 속했다. 하나님의 진실하심은 주의 말씀에 있다. 히스기야는 진실하신 주의 말씀을 지켰다. 그의 삶은 주 앞에서 진실하고 선했다. 주 예수님을 닮은 것이다. 주님은 말씀대로 사셨다. 그래서 예수님의 삶은 진실하고 선했다. 하나님은 히스기야의 진실하고 선한 삶을 보셨다. 그것은 그의 병 치유에 중요한 역할을 한다. 우리가 하나님 앞에서 진실하고 선해야 한다. 이를 위해서 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 믿음의 순종은 치유의 지름길이다. 하나님은 순종하는 사람에게 복과 치유를 약속하셨다. “내 아들아 네 말에 주의하며 내가 말하는 것에 네 귀를 기울이라 그것을 네 눈에서 떠나게 하지 말며 네 마음으로 지키라 그것은 얻은 자에게 생명이 되며 그의 온 육체의 건강이 됨이니라”(잠 4:20-22). 불순종의 죄는 병을 유발하지만 순종은 치유를 가져 온다. “주는 나를 용서하사 내가 떠나 없어지기 전에 나의 건강을 회복시키소서”(시 39:13). 우리가 주의 말씀을 순종하여 진실하고 선하게 행하면 주님께서 치유의 은총을 베푸신다.
히스기야는 전심으로 주를 의지했다(3절). 우리는 온 마음으로 주를 의지해야 한다. 오직 믿음으로 주를 찾고 주님께 맡겨야 한다. 믿음은 치유의 지름길이다. 백부장의 종과 혈루병 여자 그리고 가나안 여자의 딸도 믿음으로 치유받았다. 내 병이 낫기 위해서 주만 의지하며 나가야 한다. 주님은 내 믿음을 보시고 치유하신다.
하나님은 히스기야의 기도를 들으셨다(4-6절). 주님은 그의 눈물의 기도에 응답하셨다. 다시 주의 말씀이 이사야에게 임했다. 그 말씀은 기쁨의 말씀이요, 소망의 말씀이요, 생명의 말씀이요, 구원과 치유의 말씀이다. 하나님은 말씀하셨다. “내가 네 기도를 들었다. 네 눈물을 보았다. 네가 15년을 더 살 것이다”(5절). 히스기야는 눈물의 기도에 응답받았다. 그는 지금 엄청난 기쁨과 행복한 말을 듣고 있다. 그는 죽었다가 살아나는 소식을 들은 것이다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 건강 여부는 주님께 있다. 내 몸을 지으신 이가 치유하신다. 주님은 내 몸의 약함, 고통, 괴로움, 장애를 치유하신다.
히스기야는 병으로 죽는다는 말을 주님으로부터 들었다. 하지만 그의 진실한 회개와 기도 그리고 믿음과 순종은 죽음에서 생명으로 바뀌었다. 우리의 모든 삶은 주님의 손에 있다. 죽음이라는 절망 속에서도 우리가 주를 믿을 때에 주님은 영원한 생명을 주신다. 우리 앞에 그 어떠한 절망적인 상황이 있을지라도 우리는 좌절하지 말아야 한다. 그 상황을 소망으로 바꾸시는 주님의 말씀을 의지하며 순종해야 한다. 주님은 그 믿음을 보시고 치유하시고 구원해 주신다. 우리는 포기하지 말고 순종과 믿음으로 나아가자. 그러면 주님은 우리의 삶의 평안과 안전을 보장해 주신다.
The Way to Receive Healing (Isaiah 38:1-6)
As we live, health is an important and necessary part of life. Therefore, people want to be healthy by instinct. When we aren’t healthy, our daily lives become uncomfortable and difficult. Even mobility will not happen according to our thoughts and will. When a healthy individual suddenly collapses from a stroke, their daily life completely changes along with a huge shock. This is how much influence health has in our lives. Today’s Scripture is about King Hezekiah’s illness and recovery.
In verse 1, King Hezekiah was at the point of death due to an illness. He is a descendant of David and the king of Judah. Hezekiah was a faithful and devoted king before God. But he was about to die. Illness signifies that there is an issue with the body. There is a big difference between having and not having an illness. And there are many types of illnesses. There are small, big, recoverable, incurable, chronic illnesses, etc.. Hezekiah’s illness was a terminal one. Death means the end of life. Death is a destiny of all humans (Hebrews 9:27). It is beyond the boundaries of human power. Therefore, all people surrender to death.
Prophet Isaiah came to Hezekiah. He told him what God said–“Give instructions to your household, for you are about to die; you will not get well.” God told Hezekiah like a bolt from the blue to ‘Give instructions to your household, for you are about to die’. Even today many people die from diseases and illnesses. Hezekiah’s destiny was to die now. However, we must remember–to live or die is in the hand of God. God has the power of death and life. Therefore, he can make a person die or raise one from the dead. Jesus raised a dead girl and Lazarus from the dead. Whether Hezekiah dies or lives is in the hand of God. Hezekiah must have felt great fear and pang when he heard the word of God. What should we do in the face of such an irresistible force? We ought to learn Hezekiah’s faith.
Hezekiah, first and foremost, knelt before God and prayed. He did not despair. He did not seek a doctor. He prayed to God who has command over his health and life. When we have health issues, we must first seek the Lord. We must kneel before God and pray to him. We must reflect on ourselves before God, and confess all our sins and repent. And we must pray earnestly to the Lord who delivers and heals. We should pray to the Lord of Healing to heal us.
Hezekiah called out to God and prayed to remember how he served him with faithfulness and wholehearted devotion (v3). He obeyed the Lord and lived faithfully. Goodness and faithfulness do not come from human but God, who is good and faithful. God’s faithfulness is in his word. Hezekiah kept the word of the Lord, which is faithful. His life was faithful and good before God. He was like Jesus. Jesus lived by the word of God. So his life was faithful and good. God saw Hezekiah’s faithful and good life. And it plays a crucial role in his recovery. We must be faithful and good before God. To achieve this, we must obey the word of the Lord. Obedience in faith is the shortcut to healing. God promised healing and blessing to those who obey: “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body” (Proverbs 4:20-22). The sin of disobedience causes sickness but obedience brings healing: “O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more” (Psalms 39:13). When we obey the word of God and live faithfully and with wholehearted devotion to God, our Lord will grant healing.
Hezekiah relied on the Lord with all his heart (v3). We must rely on the Lord with all our hearts. We must seek God with faith and entrust everything to the Lord. Faith is the shortcut to recovery. The centurion’s servant, the woman suffering from hemophilia, and the daughter of the Canaanite woman were all healed by faith. For us to recover from our illnesses, we must seek the Lord and rely only on him. Then, the Lord will see our faith and heal us.
God listened to Hezekiah’s prayer (v4-6). The Lord responded to his prayer of tears. The Word of the Lord came to Prophet Isaiah. This Word was the word of joy, hope, life, salvation and healing. God said, “I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.” (v5). Hezekiah’s tearful prayers have been granted. He heard news of great joy. He heard the news that he was dead but now alive. We must remember that our health belongs to the Lord. The one who created our body also heals our diseases. The Lord heals our weaknesses, pain, and disabilities.
Hezekiah heard from the Lord that he will die of an illness. However, his sincere repentance, prayer, faith and obedience turned death to life. Our entire lives are in God’s hand. When we believe in the Lord even in the face of death, the Lord gives us eternal life. We must not be dismayed no matter what circumstances await us. We must trust in the Lord who turns despair into hope and trust and obey the Lord’s Word. The Lord sees our faith and heals and delivers us. Let us not give up but go forward by obedience and faith. Then, the Lord will guarantee peace and safety of our lives.
