느헤미야가 예루살렘 성벽이 다 무너졌다는 소식을 들었다. 느브갓네살 왕의 시위대장 느브사라단이 하나님의 성전과 왕궁을 불 태우고 성벽을 다 무너뜨렸기 때문이다. 느혜미야는 아닥사스다 왕에 의해서 12년간 유다 총독으로 임명을 받았다. 그는 그 기간에 예루살렘 성벽을 재건했다. 그는 예루살렘을 다스릴 사람을 2명 세웠다. 그 중에 한 사람이 하나냐이다. 하나냐는 충성스러운 사람이요 하나님을 경외함이 많은 사람 중에서 뛰어나기 때문이었다(느혜미야 7:2). 오늘 성경은 예수님께서 바울을 충성스럽게 여겨 주셔서 직분을 맡기신 내용이다.
본문에는 1인칭 ‘나’가 4번 등장한다. 이 말은 본문이 개인적이고 자기고백적이라는 의미다. 첫번째 ‘나’는 예수님을 믿기전 바울, 두번째 ‘내가’는 주를 믿은 후의 바울, 세번째 ‘나’는 믿는 자 그리스인으로서 품성과 인격을 갖춘 바울, 네번째 ‘내게’는 신실성, 진실성, 그리고 신뢰성이 검증된 바울이다.
바울은 “나를 능하게 하신 그리스도 예수 우리 주께”라고 말한다. 바울은 주를 믿기 전에는 유대교의 바리새인이었다. 그는 유대교에 열심이었다. 그래서 그는 주님과 교회 그리고 성도를 박해하고 파괴했다. 그는 주님 앞에서 죄인이었고 영적으로 무능했다. 그런 바울을 주님은 불렀다. 주님은 십자가와 부활의 권능으로 바울을 영적으로 살아 있게 하셨다. 주님은 그를 영원한 생명의 능력으로 강하게 하셨다. 주님은 바울에게 성령을 주셨다. 그래서 그는 권능을 받았다. 그는 영원한 생명의 복음을 전하는 능력을 받았다. 그는 수많은 병을 고쳤다. 그는 장애인을 치유하고 귀신을 쫓아내고 죽은 사람을 살렸다. 주님은 이렇게 바울을 능력 있게 하셨다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 주님은 죄와 허물로 죽은 우리를 복음의 권능으로 살리셨다. 죽은 우리가 영원한 생명을 얻게 하셨다. 멸망 받게 될 우리가 천국에서 사는 능력을 주셨다. 주님은 우리가 주님을 섬기고, 예배하고, 순종하며, 주의 뜻을 행하는 능력을 주셨다. 주님은 하나님의 능력과 지혜로서 나의 능력이 되셨다(고전 1:24, 30).
바울은 자기를 능하게 하신 그리스도 주님께 감사한다. 감사는 모든 상황에서 해야 한다(살전 5:18). 우리는 또한 특정한 일에 감사한다. 우리는 원하는 대학과 직장에 합격을 했을 때에 감사한다. 바울은 지금 특별한 일에 대해서 감사한다. 그것은 주님께서 자신을 충성스럽게 여겨 주시고 직분을 맡겨주신 것에 대한 감사이다. ‘충성스럽다. 신실하다’는 말은 여러 가지 의미가 있다. 첫째, 한 마음을 갖는 것이다. 그것은 변함이 없는 마음, 일편단심이다. 그것은 주님만 사랑하고 섬기는 마음, 지조가 있는 마음, 한 길만 가는 마음이다. 바울은 주님을 향한 한 마음으로 주를 섬기고 사랑하고 순종했다. 그는 변함없이 한 길만 갔다. 우리는 주님께 충성스러운 사람이 되어야 한다. 그래서 바울처럼 오직 한 마음으로 주님을 사랑하고 섬기고 순종해야 한다.
충성스러운 사람은 자기 사명을 다한다. 그는 자기 일에 전심전력한다. 바울은 주의 복음을 전하는 사명을 위해서 목숨도 아끼지 않았다(행 20:24). 우리는 충성스러운 주의 종으로서, 사명을 목숨보다 귀하게 여겨야 한다. 충성스러운 사람은 믿을 만한 사람이다. 그는 신뢰할 수 있어야 한다. 믿고 맡길 수 있는 사람이 되어야 한다. 주님은 바울을 신뢰했다. 그래서 주님은 그에게 자기 일을 맡겼다. 우리도 주님이 신뢰하고 맡길 수 있는 사람이 되어야 한다. 충성스러운 사람은 순종의 사람이다. 충성된 종은 주인이 시킨대로 한다. 그는 거역하는 법이 없다. 바울은 주님의 말씀과 뜻을 온전히 순종했다. 우리 주님은 십자가에 죽으시기까지 순종했다(빌 2:8). 불순종은 불충한 것이다. 아브라함은 하나님께 충성을 다했다. 그는 독자 이삭까지 순종하여 바쳤다. 우리가 충성스러운 사람이 되기 위해서는 예수님처럼 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다.
충성스러운 사람은 주님의 마음을 기쁘게 하고 시원하게 한다. 성경은 말한다. “충성된 사자는 그를 보낸 이에게 마치 추수하는 날에 얼음 냉수 같아서 능히 그 주인의 마음을 시원케 하느니라”(잠 25:13). 신실하신 예수님은 하나님 아버지 마음을 기쁘고 시원하게 하셨다(마 3:17; 마 17:5). 바울은 주님의 마음을 기쁘게 하고 시원하게 했다. 그는 주님의 원함을 온전히 이루었기 때문이다. 우리도 주님의 마음을 즐겁고 시원하게 해드려야 한다. 충성됨은 바로 거기에 있다. 신실함에는 진실성이 있다. “신실한 증인은 거짓말을 아니하여도 거짓 증인은 거짓말을 뱉느니라”(잠 14:5). 예수님은 신실한 증인이시다(계 1:5). 주님은 말과 행위에 거짓이 없으시다. 우리가 충성된 사람이 되려면 진실해야 한다. 진실한 사람이 곧 신실한 사람이다.
바울은 주님께서 자신을 충스럽게 여겨 주셔서 직분을 맡기셨다고 말한다. 주님은 바울의 모든 것을 아셨다. 주님은 바울의 마음, 성품, 인격을 보시고 아셨다. 그래서 주님은 그에게 사도의 직분을 맡기셨다. 바울은 자신의 직업을 사도라고 썼을 것이다. 우리는 바울처럼 주님께 충성스러운 사람이 되어야 한다. 우리는 신실한 마음과 성품을 지녀야 한다. 우리는 말과 행실에서 신실해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀과 사명에 신실해야 한다. 그러면 주님은 나와 나의 모든 것을 아시고 최선의 직분과 직업을 주실 것이다. 그래서 주님은 나의 신실함을 통해서 주님의 뜻을 다 이루실 것이다. 예수님은 십자가 위에서 구주의 사명을 다 이루셨다(요 19:30).
Being Faithful (1 Timothy 1:12)
Nehemiah heard that the wall of Jerusalem was broken down. Nebuzaradan, the commander of King Nebuchadnezzar, had burned down the temple of God and the palace. Nehemiah was appointed as a governor of Judah by King Artaxerxes for twelve years. During this time, he rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. And he appointed two people to oversee Jerusalem. One of them was Hananiah. Hananiah was “a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do” (Nehemiah 7:2). Today’s passage is about Jesus considering Paul trustworthy to appointed him to his service.
In today’s passage, “I” and “me” are mentioned four times in total. This means this specific passage is personal to Paul and self-testimonial. The first “I” is Paul after he believed in Jesus; the first “me” is him before he met Jesus; the second “me” is Paul the believer who has the personality and character of a Christian; and the third “me” is Paul who has proven faithful, truthful, and trustworthy.
Paul says, “Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength.” Before believing in Jesus, Paul was a Pharisee of Judaism. He was zealous about the Jewish traditions. So he persecuted and killed the church of Christ and the believers. He was a sinner before God and spiritually powerless. But Jesus called Paul. Through the power of the cross and resurrection, Jesus enabled Paul to live spiritually. He strengthened Paul with the power of eternal life. He gave him the Holy Spirit. So Paul received power–the power to preach the gospel of eternal life. He healed many sicknesses. He healed the disabled, drove out demons, and raised the dead. Jesus gave Paul such power. The same applies to us. Jesus raised us, who died in our sins and transgressions, with the power of his gospel. We enabled us, who were dead, to gain eternal life. He gave us, who were doomed to destruction, the power to live in the kingdom of heaven. He gave us the power to serve, worship, obey, and fulfill the will of the Lord. Jesus, who is God’s power and wisdom, became our power (1 Corinthians 1:24,30).
Paul gives thanks to Christ Jesus who gave him strength. We must give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We also give thanks in certain situations. We thank God when we are accepted to the college or company of our desire. Likewise, Paul is giving thanks for a specific situation. That is, he was thankful that Christ Jesus considered him trustworthy and appointed him to his service. ‘Trustworthy’ and ‘faithful’ have several meanings. First, it is having a consistent mind. That is, the mind is unchanging and sincere. It is the mind of loving and serving only Jesus, the mind of integrity that goes on just one way. Paul served, loved, and obeyed Christ Jesus with the mind of integrity. He walked on one path without deviating. Similarly, we ought to become faithful people toward Jesus. Thus, we ought to love, serve, and obey the Lord with the heart of integrity.
Trustworthy people fulfill their calling. They do their work wholeheartedly. Paul did not spare even his life for his calling to preach the gospel (Acts 20:24). We must consider our calling to be more valuable than our life, as faithful servants of Christ. Faithful people are worthy of trust. They ought to be trustworthy. And Jesus trusted Paul, so he entrusted him with his work. We also must become people with whom Jesus entrusts his work. Faithful people are those who obey. They do as they are told by their master. They never resist. Paul completely obeyed the word and will of Christ. Jesus our Lord obeyed to death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). Disobedience is being unfaithful. Abraham was loyal to God. He even obeyed and sacrificed his son Isaac. For us to become faithful, we should obey the word of God just like Jesus.
Trustworthy people delight and refresh the spirit of Jesus. The Bible says, “Like a new-cooled drink at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to the one who sends him; he refreshes the spirit of his master” (Proverbs 25:13). Jesus, who was trustworthy, pleased and refreshed the spirit of God the Father (Matthew 3:17, 17:5). Paul also pleased and refreshed the spirit of Christ Jesus, because he completely fulfilled what Jesus wanted. Likewise, we ought to please and refresh the heart of Jesus. There is honesty in being trustworthy: “An honest witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies” (Proverbs 14:5). Jesus is a trustworthy witness (Revelations 1:5). There is no deceit in his words or actions. We must be honest to become trustworthy. An honest person is a trustworthy person.
Paul says that the Lord considered him faithful and so entrusted him with the ministry. The Lord knew everything about Paul. The Lord saw Paul’s heart, character and personality and knew him. Thus, the Lord gave him the role as an apostle. Paul himself would have considered his job to be an apostle. We must also become a faithful person before the Lord like Paul. We must have a faithful heart and personality. We must be faithful in speech and action. We must be faithful in the Lord’s Word and his calling. Then, the Lord who knows us and our everything will give us the best role and job. Thus, the Lord will accomplish all of his will through our faithfulness. Jesus Christ himself accomplished his duty as a Savior on the cross (John 19:30).
