사람의 삶은 만남과 헤어짐의 연속이다. 출생은 만남이고 죽음은 헤어짐이다. 가족은 주로 아침에 헤어지고 저녁에 다시 만난다. 성도들도 주일에 만나서 헤어지고 다음 주일에 또 만난다. 오늘 성경은 예수님과 제자들의 헤어짐과 만남을 묘사하고 있다.
본문은 16절로부터 이어지는 내용이다. 예수님은 16절에서 제자들에게 “조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라”고 말씀하셨다. 이 말을 제자들은 정확하게 이해하지 못했다. 그래서 제자들은 서로를 보면서 ‘주님의 말씀이 무슨 뜻이냐. 조금 있으면 이라는 말이 무슨 의미냐’고 하면서 몹시 궁금해 한다(17-18). 예수님은 제자들이 자기의 말을 궁금해 하면서 명확하게 알기를 원하는 것을 아셨다. 사실 말하는 사람의 말의 뜻을 가장 잘 아는 사람은 그 말을 하는 사람이다. 교수님의 말을 듣고 정확하게 이해하지 못했을 때에는 ‘무슨 의미지’ 하면서 궁금해 한다. 그래서 학생이 질문을 하면 교수님은 이해하기 쉽게 가르쳐 준다.
예수님은 제자들이 이해를 하지 못하고 서로 질문하는 것을 아셨다(19절). 그래서 주님은 “조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하므로 서로 문의하느냐”고 말씀하셨다. 이 말씀은 주님의 십자가의 죽으심과 부활을 의미한다. 제자들은 잠시 후에 주님을 보지 못한다. 주님은 십자가에 달려 죽으시기 때문이다. 예수님과 제자들의 헤어짐이다. 하지만 제자들은 잠시 후에 또 부활하신 예수님을 만나게 된다. 제자들은 주님의 십자가의 고난과 죽음, 그리고 부활을 지금은 이해를 하지 못하고 있다. 한국의 추석명절 때에 자녀들은 고향을 방문한다. 많은 시간을 보내면서 힘들게 고향에 가면 부모님은 얼굴에 웃음 띤 얼굴로 싱글벙글하면서 자녀들을 반갑게 맞이한다. 유학생들도 방학과 개강 때에 만남과 헤어짐이 반복된다. 헤어지는 아쉬움과 기다림의 기쁨이 있다.
20-22절은 예수님께서 제자들의 질문에 대한 설명이다. 제자들은 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으실 때에 크게 슬퍼하며 곡한다. 주님의 죽음은 많은 고난과 함께 하는 죽음이요 사형수로 죽는 것이다. 그것은 주님을 사랑하는 제자들에게 견딜 수 없는 아픔이요 슬픔이다. 사랑하는 가족이 죽었을 때에 슬픔은 매우 큰것과 같다. 그런데 세상은 기뻐한다. 세상과 제자들은 반대편에 있다. 세상은 주님을 괴롭히고 박해하고 죽인다. 그러면서 그들은 주님의 죽음을 기뻐한다. 하지만 반전의 때가 온다. 제자들이 기뻐하고 세상이 슬퍼할 때가 온다. 주님을 대적하고 악을 행한 세상은 주님의 심판을 받는다. 그 때에 그들은 감당할 수 없는 슬픔과 고통에 이른다. 그러나 제자들은 소망하는 주님이 오실 때에 주님을 맞이하는 큰 기쁨이 있다.
예수님은 여자가 만삭이 되어 출산 때가 되면 근심하게 된다고 말씀한다. 특히 초산 때에는 근심이 크다. 왜냐하면 산모는 출산 경험이 없기 때문에 출산의 고통에 대한 두려움과 근심이 있다. 하지만 아이를 낳으면 큰 보람과 기쁨이 있다. 그 이유는 자기의 혈육이요 분신이 태어났기 때문이다. 그래서 산모는 출산의 고통을 다 잊어버린다.
예수님은 제자들에게 지금은 근심하지만, 부활하신 주님을 다시 보게 될 때에는 마음이 기쁠 것이라고 말씀한다. 근심은 2종류가 있다. 성경은 말한다. “하나님의 뜻대로 하는 근심은 후회할 것이 없는 구원에 이르게 하는 회개를 이루는 것이요 세상 근심은 사망을 이루는 것이니라”(고후 7:10). 주님을 잘 믿고, 잘 섬기고, 잘 순종하지 못해서 하는 근심은 후회 할 것이 없다. 하지만 먹고 사는 문제나 자기 욕심을 이루기 위한 세상 근심은 죄에 빠지게 하면서 사망에 이르게 한다.
지금 제자들의 근심은 믿음에 근거한 것이다. 사랑하는 주님을 다시 보지 못할 것에 대한 근심이다. 제자들은 이 때에 예수님의 십자가의 죽으심을 온전히 이해하지 못했다. 그래서 제자들은 주님의 죽음을 앞두고 근심으로 가득찼다. 그들은 주님과 헤어지고 자기들만 남는다고 생각했다. 그리고 제자들은 앞으로의 일을 생각하면서 근심이 마음을 무겁게 눌렀다.
하지만 제자들은 부활하신 주님을 다시 보게 된다. 제자들은 주님을 다시 만날 때에 근심 이상으로 기쁠 것이다. 그 기쁨은 주체하지 못할 정도로 넘쳐날 것이다. 부활하신 주님을 만나는 기쁨은 빼앗을 자가 없다. 그것은 주님이 주신 하늘의 기쁨이기 때문이다. 유학생 친구들이 지금은 방학을 하면서 헤어진다. 그 중에는 다음 학기에 다시오는 친구들이 있다. 또 군대에 입대하는 친구들도 있다. 우리가 헤어질 때에는 마음이 허전하고 아쉬움이 있다. 하지만 다시 만날 때에는 큰 기쁨이 있을 것이다. 마음으로 기다리면서 다시 만나는 기쁨은 배가 될 것이다. 우리는 다시 기쁨으로 만날 날을 기대하면서 기다려야 할 것이다.
Meeting and Parting (John 16:19-22)
Our life consists of continuously meeting new people and parting. Birth is meeting and death is parting. Members of a family normally part in the morning and meet again in the evening. We meet church members on Sunday, then part, and then meet again the next Sunday. Today’s passage describes the meeting and parting of Jesus and his disciples.
Today’s passage is a continuation from verse 16. In verse 16, Jesus tells his disciples, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” The disciples did not understand his words. So they were looking at each other wondering ‘What does he mean? What does he mean by a little while?’ (16-18). Jesus knew that the disciples wanted to ask him about what he said and that they wanted to understand it. The one who speaks knows best about the meaning of what he says. When the professor says something we don’t understand, we question ‘What does it mean?’ And when the students ask questions, the professor explains in an understandable manner.
Jesus knew that the disciples did not understand and were asking each other what he meant (19). So he said, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’?” His words mean Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. In a little while, the disciples will not see Jesus, because he will be crucified. It is a parting between Jesus and the disciples. However, after a little while, the disciples will see Jesus again after he has resurrected. At the time, the disciples were not able to understand Jesus’ crucifixion and death, and the resurrection. In Korea, children visit their parents in their hometown on holidays such as Chuseok and New Year. When the children arrive after a long drive, the parents greet them with a huge smile on their face. Likewise, the international students repeatedly meet and part, in the beginning and end of a semester or school year. There is the sorrow of parting and the joy of waiting.
Verses 20-22 are about Jesus’ explanation to the disciples’ questions. The disciples are deeply sorrowful when Jesus is crucified. Jesus’ death accompanies many hardships and is the death of a criminal on death row. For the disciples who loved Jesus, they were unbearably hurt and sad by this event. Their sorrow was like when a dear family member dies. However, the world rejoices. The world and the disciples are on opposite sides. The world assaults, persecutes, and kills Jesus. And they are happy about his death. However, soon there will be a turn of events. The world that opposed and did evil will be punished by Jesus. Then, they will be overwhelmed by sorrow and anguish. However, for his disciples, there will be great joy of greeting Jesus when he comes.
Jesus says that a woman who is at the point of conceiving a child has anguish. The anguish is great especially when conceiving the very first child, because the mother has no experience giving birth–so she has fear and anguish about the pain. However, after her baby is born, she is full of joy because her flesh and blood is born. So the mother forgets all her pains.
Jesus says that although they grieve now, they will be joyful when they see him again after he has resurrected. Now there are two types of grief. The Bible says, “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death” (2 Corinthians 7:10). The grief that arises because we couldn’t believe, serve, and obey the Lord faithfully is a healthy one. However, worldly grief concerning making a living or fulfilling one’s greed plunges us into sin and leads us to death.
The disciples’ grief is based on faith. They have grief because they won’t be able to see Jesus whom they love. At the time, the disciples did not fully understand Jesus’ death on the cross. Therefore, the disciples were filled with grief before his death. They thought they would part with Jesus and be left all by themselves. And thinking about what is to happen, grief overwhelmed their hearts as with a heavy rock.
Nonetheless, the disciples get to see Jesus after he has resurrected. They must have been extremely joyful, even more than their grief. Their joy must have overflowed beyond control. The joy of meeting Jesus after resurrection, no can take away because it is the heavenly joy that Jesus gives. Now we need to say farewell to the international students, as they are leaving for the break. Among them are students who will return. There are others who will be going to the army. When we part, our hearts may feel lonely and sorrowful. However, when we meet each other again, there will be great joy. The joy of meeting again after waiting for some time will be doubled. We will have to wait expectantly until we meet again with joy.
