유치원에 다니는 아이에게 엄마가 말한다. ‘너는 큰 사람이 되어야 한다. 너는 어른이 되어서 훌륭한 사람이 되어야 해’ 모든 부모의 공통된 마음은 자녀가 큰 사람이 되는 것이다. ‘너는 작은 사람이 되어야 한다’라고 말하는 부모는 거의 없다. 예수님은 우리가 천국에서 큰 사람이 되기를 원하신다. 하나님 나라에서 큰 사람은 어떤 사람인가. 본문은 천국에서 큰 사람이 누구인지에 대한 제자들의 물음에 대한 예수님의 답변이다.
예수님과 제자들은 필연적 관계에 있다. 그것은 선생과 제자, 구주와 성도, 천국의 왕과 백성과의 관계다. 제자들은 하나님 나라의 왕이신 주님께 질문한다. ‘천국에서는 누가 크죠?’ 제자들은 자기들이 천국에서 들어갈 것으로 확신하고 있다. 그래서 그들은 천국에서 큰 사람은 어떤 사람일까 하고 궁금해 한다. 미국에서 큰 사람은 누구죠? 하면, 물론 ‘대통령이죠’라고 말할 것이다. 학교에서 큰 사람은 누구죠 하면, ‘그야 교장, 총장이죠’ 회사에서 큰 사람은 누구죠 하면, ‘사장아닌가요’라고 말한다.
예수님은 한 어린 아이를 불러 세우시고 설명하신다(2절). 예수님은 말씀을 비유를 들어서 전하시고, 직접 설명하시고, 몸소 본을 보여 주시고, 또 실물을 보여 주시면서 가르치신다. 오늘 본문은 실물설교다. 예수님은 제자들에게 돌이켜 어린 아이들과 같이 되지 않으면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못한다고 강조하신다(3절). 우리가 천국에 들어가지 위한 필수적인 조건이 있다. 그것은 어린 아이처럼 되는 것이다. 예수은 천국에서 큰 사람보다 먼저 천국 입성 자격과 조건에 대해서 말씀하신다.
어린 아이들처럼 되는 것은 무엇인가. 그것은 신체적인 것이 아니다. 아이들은 신체가 덜 성숙하다. 아이들의 몸은 계속 자라면서 어른이 된다. 또한 그것은 정신적인 것이 아니다. 어린 아이는 정신적으로 성숙하지 못하다. 어떤 일을 어른 처럼 완벽하게 해 낼 수 있는 능력이 없다. 예수님께서 어린 아이들처럼 되어야 한다고 하신 것은 지적 능력을 말하는 것이 아니다. 어린이는 사고 기능이 미숙하다. 어른처럼 전체적이고 포괄적이고 균형잡힌 지적 능력을 갖추고 있지 않다. 초등학생한테 대학교 강의를 하면 못 알아 듣는다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 천국에 들어가는 필수 조건은 어린 아이처럼 되는 것이다.
예수님은 어린 아이들처럼 되어야 한다는 의미를 4절에서 말한다. “그러므로 누구든지 이 어린 아이와 같이 자기를 낮추는 사람이 천국에서 큰 사람이다.” 우리가 천국에 들어갈 수 있는 조건과 천국에서 큰 사람이 되는 것은 어린 아이처럼 되는 것이다. 그렇다면 어린이처럼 되는 것은 무엇인가?
우리는 여기서 어린이의 특성을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 첫째는 단순성이다. 아이들은 깊고 넓게 심사숙고하고 복잡하게 생각하지 않는다. 미국에서 8살 먹은 여자 아이가 엄마에게 좋아하는 것을 사달라고 조르고 있었다. 그런데 엄마는 사줄 수 없다고 한다. 왜냐하면 사줄 형편이 안 되었기 때문이다. 그 때에 그 장면을 보고 있던 어떤 아저씨가 아이에게 사주겠다고 한다. 그래서 그 아이는 아저씨를 의심없이 따라갔다. 그 아저씨는 아이가 원하는 것을 사 주지 않았다. 그는 아이를 성폭행하고 죽였다. 이것은 어린이의 단순성을 보여 준다.
둘째는 의존성이다. 아이들은 신체적으로나 심리적으로 약하기 때문에 무엇인가를 의지하는 성향이 있다. 그래서 아이들은 부모나 어른을 의지하며 살아간다. 셋째는 순수성이다. 아이들은 때가 안 묻었다고 한다. 나이를 많이 먹으면 세상 경험이 풍부해 진다. 어른들은 온갖 세상의 잡다한 생각을 하면서 산다. 어른들은 남을 속이고 거짓을 말하고 순수하지 못한 악한 생각을 하기도 한다. 그래서 어른들은 순수하지 못하다고 한다. 하지만 사람들은 어린 아이는 백지처럼 순수한 면이 있다고 말한다. 아이들은 이것 저것 따지지 않는다. 목사님이 어떤 성도님 집에 심방을 가셨다. 그런데 엄마가 아이한테 ‘엄마 없다고 말하라’고 했다. 아이는 목사님한테 ‘우리 엄마가요 엄마가 없다고 말하라고 했어요’ 한다.
네번째는 겸손이다. 오늘 성경에서 예수님은 어린 아이들의 겸손을 말씀한다. 어린이처럼 되어야 한다는 의미는 자기를 낮추는 것이다. 즉 겸손이 아이들의 특성이다. 대체로 어른들의 마음은 높아져 있다. 어른들은 서로 잘난척하고, 자존심이 강하고, 자기가 최고라고 생각한다. 어른들은 자기를 낮출 생각이 별로 없다. 말로는 아닌척 하지만 실제로는 자기를 높인다. 그래서 어른들은 남을 무시하고, 상대방을 낮춘다. 그런데 어린이는 어른들처럼 마음이 높아져서 잘난척하고, 고집세고, 자존심 강하고, 남을 무시하지 않는 성향이 있다. 어린 아이들은 자기를 낮추고, 쉽게 수용하고, 잘 따르는 성향이 있다. 전도를 해 보면 어른보다 아이들이 복음을 잘 받아들인다.
예수님은 겸손의 모범이시다. 예수님은 항상 자기를 낮추셨다. 그래서 주님은 죽기까지 순종하셨다. 어린 아이처럼 자기를 낮추는 마음은 예수님의 마음이다. 예수님의 마음은 성령이 주는 마음이다. 그래서 우리가 예수님의 마음을 가지고 겸손하면 천국에서 큰 사람이 된다. 결국 예수님은 겸손하라고 말씀하신다. 우리가 천국에서 큰 사람이 되기 위해서는 항상 낮아져야 한다.
Greatest in Heaven (Matthew 18:1-4)
A mother tells a kindergartener, “You have to become great. You have to become great when you grow up.” It is the hope of most, if not all, parents that their children become great. No parent would ever say to their child, “Become the least.” Similarly, Jesus wants us to be great in heaven. Who are the greatest people in the Kingdom of Heaven? Today’s passage is Jesus’s answer to the disciples’ question of who is the greatest in heaven.
Jesus and his disciples have an unbreakable relationship. That is the relationship between a teacher and a disciple, the Savior and a believer, the King of heaven and the citizen of heaven. The disciples asked the Lord, the King of heaven, “Who is the greatest in heaven?” The disciples believed that they would enter heaven. So they were curious about who becomes great in heaven. Who is the greatest in the United States? People would answer, the president. Who is the greatest in school? People would answer, the principal. Who is the greatest in a company? People would answer, the CEO.
Jesus called a child and explained to the disciples who is the greatest in heaven (v2). Jesus teaches by using parables, explaining directly, demonstrating by action, or showing real life. Today’s passage is Jesus teaching by showing real life. Jesus emphasizes that if we do not become like a little child, we will never be able to enter heaven (v3). There is one condition we must meet to enter heaven. That is to become like a little child. Before telling them who is the greatest in heaven, Jesus first explains what the requirement is to enter heaven.
What does it mean to become like a little child? Jesus is not referring to the physical state. Children are physically immature. Their body continues to grow until they become adults. Nor is Jesus referring to the mental state. Children are mentally immature. They don’t have the ability to perform a duty as well as an adult. Nor is Jesus referring to intellectual ability. Children are intellectually immature. They don’t have the ability to make appropriate and intellectual decisions like adults. Elementary school students won’t understand college lectures. But we must remember that the requirement of entering heaven is to become like a little child.
Jesus explains what it means to become like a little child in verse 4. “Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” The condition we must meet to enter heaven is to become like a little child. What does it mean to become like a little child?
We must consider the typical characteristics of a child. First of all, children are simple. They don’t think too deeply or complicatedly. There was an eight year old girl who was begging her mother to buy her something she wanted. The mother denied her because she could not afford it. A stranger who witnessed the situation offered to buy the girl what she wanted. The girl followed the stranger without any suspicion. However, the stranger did not buy her what she wanted. Instead, he sexually abused the girl and murdered her. This unfortunate incident shows that children are too simple.
Second, children are dependent. Due to their physical and psychological weaknesses, children tend to depend on others. They depend on their parents and other adults. Third, children are naive. Children are pure. Older people have more worldly experiences. Adults live with all kinds of worldly thoughts. Some adults deceive others, lie, or harbor malicious thoughts. Thus, we say that adults are impure. However, we say that children are pure like clean paper. Children tend not to ask too many questions. A pastor once visited a church member’s home. The church member told her child to say, “mother is not home.” So the child told the pastor “My mom told me to tell you that she is not home.”
Fourth, children are humble. Jesus talks about children’s humility in today’s passage. To become like a little child means to become humble. Humility is a characteristic of a child. Adults tend to be arrogant. They brag, have high self esteem, and consider themselves the best. Adults tend not to think about being low. Even though they pretend to be otherwise in speech, they are arrogant. They tend to belittle and disregard others. Most children on the other hand are not proud, stubborn, have high self-esteem or disregard others like adults. Children tend to be more accepting of their lowly state, receptive, and follow leaders well. When we tell the gospel to children and adults, children tend to be more receptive.
Jesus is the model of humility. Jesus always humbled himself. Jesus even obeyed to death. Being humble like a little child is the mind of Jesus. Jesus’s mind is the mind of the Holy Spirit. When we lower ourselves and imitate Jesus, we will become the greatest in heaven. Jesus tells us to be humble. To become the greatest in heaven, we must become the lowest.
