믿음의 삶에 필수 적인 요소는 성령이다. 믿음과 구원은 성령으로 시작하고, 성령으로 유지되, 성령으로 완성된다. 그래서 예수님은 믿는 자에게 성령을 보내신다고 약속하셨다. 그 약속은 오순절날 성취되었다. 예수님의 제자들은 한 장소에 모여서 기도하고 있었다. 그 때에 갑자기 성령이 임했다. 주님의 약속이 성취된 것이다. 성경은 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 성령을 받는다고 말한다(행 19:2; 갈 3:2, 14; 엡 1:13). 성령은 우리 마음과 삶에서 어떤 역사를 할까요? 성령 받은 사람은 어떤 사람일까요? 성경은 그것을 말한다.
오늘 본문은 성령을 ‘보혜사’라고 말한다. 보혜사는 본래 언어인 헬라어로 ‘파라클레토스’라고 한다. 보혜사는 여러 가지 의미가 있다. 보혜사는 ‘위로자’이시다. 보혜사 성령은 우리를 위로하신다. 우리가 힘들고 괴로울 때에, 낙심하고 좌절할 때에, 고통 중에서 쓰러지려고 할 때에, 연약하여 흔들릴 때에 위로해 주신다. 성령은 우리 마음에 위로의 말씀으로 역사하신다. 그래서 우리가 넘어지지 않고 든든히 서게 하신다. 성령은 상담자이시다. 성령은 우리의 삶에서 풀어가야 할 많은 문제를 상담해 주신다. 내가 이 일을 어떻게 할지 몰라서 난감할 때에, 성령은 우리 마음에 임하셔서 주님의 뜻대로 해결할 수 있도록 상담해 주신다. 다윗은 무슨 일이 있을 때마다 주님께 기도함으로 성령의 도우심과 상담을 받았다.
성령은 돕는자이시다. 성령은 도움이 필요할 때에 우리를 도우신다. 우리는 살면서 많은 도움이 필요하다. 그 때마다 성령이 우리 마음에 역사하셔서 도우신다. 성령은 우리의 마음과 생각 그리고 영을 주의 말씀으로 주관하시면서 도와 주신다. 어떤 성도가 어떤 문제로 고민할 때에 성령이 도우신다. 성령은 우리가 기도하게 하면서 해법을 제시하신다. 성령은 인도자이시다. 성령은 우리 마음과 생각을 주장하시고 인도하신다. 우리가 주님의 뜻대로 살 수 있도록 인도하신다. 예수님은 성령의 인도를 따라서 사셨다. 보혜사 성령은 대언자요 변호사다. 성령은 하나님의 말씀을 대언하신다. 선지자들과 사도들은 성령이 주신 말씀으로 성경을 기록했다. 성령은 우리가 무슨 말을 해야 할 때에 변론하신다. 성령은 우리가 할 말을 주신다. 성령은 사도들이 권세자들이나 박해자들 앞에 설 때에 할 말을 주시면서 변호해 주셨다.
보혜사 성령은 하나님 아버지께서 예수님의 이름으로 보내신다(본문). 성령은 하나님 아버지로부터 나온다(요 15:26). 동시에 성령은 성자 예수님이 보내신다(요 15:26). 예수님은 부활하신 후에 제자들에게 나타나셔서 ‘성령을 받으라’고 하셨다(요 20:22).
성령은 우리에게 임하셔서 모든 것을 가르쳐 주신다(본문). ‘모든 것’이란 말은 세상의 모든 것이 아니다. 그것은 세상 사는 법 혹은 학교 공부를 말하지 않는다. 성령이 가르치는 모든 것은 하나님과 예수님에 관한 모든 것이다. 우리가 하나님을 어떻게 알 수 있는가. 성령이 가르쳐 주신다. 우리가 예수님의 십자가와 부활 그리고 사역과 가르침을 어떻게 아는가. 성령이 가르쳐 주신다. 성령은 믿음, 속죄함, 회개, 영생, 거룩함, 의로움, 하나님의 사랑, 자비, 긍휼, 선함 등을 알게 해 주신다. 성경은 말한다. “오직 하나님이 성령으로 이것을 보이셨으니 성령은 모든 것 곧 하나님의 깊은 것이라도 통달하시느니라”(고전 2:10). 성령은 하나님 마음 속 깊은 것도 알게 해 주신다. 성령은 하나님이 주님 안에서 은혜로 주신 모든 것을 알게 해 주신다. 성령은 우리가 믿음으로 받는 모든 것, 우리의 삶에 필요한 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜임을 깨닫게 해 주신다. 성령은 우리에게 모든 것을 참되게 가르쳐 주신다(요일 2:27). 성령이 가르쳐 주신 것은 진실하고 속임이 없다. 성령은 진리의 주님과 말씀을 가르쳐 주기 때문이다. 세상의 가르침은 듣기 좋고, 흥미롭고, 즐겁고, 매력적이다. 하지만 그것은 거짓되고 헛된 것이다.
성령은 예수님이 하신 모든 말씀을 생각나게 한다(본문). 성령은 예수님의 모든 가르침 곧 신약과 구약의 성경 말씀을 마음에서 생각나게 한다. 성령은 우리 마음에 주님의 말씀을 가져 온다. 예수님은 항상 하나님 말씀을 생각하시며 사셨다. 성령이 예수님 마음에 임하셨기 때문이다. 예수님은 마귀의 시험을 받으실 때에 하나님 말씀을 생각하셔서 마귀를 물리치셨다. 우리 마음에 주님의 말씀, 곧 성경 말씀이 생각나는 것은 성령의 역사다. 그것은 성령이 내 마음에 임한 증거다. 그래서 성령은 우리를 진리의 말씀으로 인도하신다(요 16:13). 그래서 성령은 우리가 진리의 말씀을 알게 하신다. 성령은 우리 마음을 주님 말씀으로 인도한다. 성령의 역사는 말씀의 역사다.
주님 말씀을 잊게 하고, 생각하지 못하게 하고, 순종하지 못하게 하는 것은 성령의 역사가 아니다. 성령은 항상 주님 말씀과 함께 한다. 우리 마음에 말씀이 아닌 세상에 속한 것이 생각날 때는 성령의 역사가 아니라는 것을 깨달아야 한다. 우리 마음이 온통 돈, 재물, 자녀, 직장, 학업, 사람, 형편, 세상 일로 가득한 것은 성령의 역사가 아니다. 성령은 우리 마음에 주님의 말씀이 아닌 것을 제거하신다. 성령은 우리 마음을 말씀으로 가득하게 하신다. 성령은 말씀이 아닌 것에서 떠나게 하신다. 그래서 성령은 진리의 말씀으로 우리 마음을 거룩하고, 깨끗하고, 순수하게 하신다. 성령이 우리 마음에 임하셔서 항상 주님과 모든 진리를 가르쳐 주시고 생각나게 해 주시기를 주님 안에서 바란다. 그래서 우리 모두가 성령으로 살기를 주님의 이름으로 바란다.
The Work of the Spirit (John 14:26)
A necessary factor in a believer’s life is the Holy Spirit. Faith and salvation begin with, are maintained with, and are completed with the Holy Spirit. So Jesus promised that he will send those who believe in him the Holy Spirit. This promise was fulfilled on Pentecost. Now Jesus’ disciples were praying together. Then the Holy Spirit came upon them. Jesus’ promise was fulfilled. The Bible says we receive the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 19:2; Galatians 3:2, 14; Ephesians 1:13). How does the Holy Spirit work in our minds and lives? What kind of person is the one who received the Holy Spirit? Today’s passage tells us this.
Today’s passage calls the Holy Spirit, the Advocate. In Greek, the advocate is “parakletos”. Advocate has many meanings. One of them is a comforter. The Advocate comforts us. When we are distressed and anguished; in despair or discouraged; about to collapse from affliction; and swaying due to weakness, the Holy Spirit comforts us. The Holy Spirit works in our hearts as the word of comfort. It helps us to stand firmly and prevents us from falling. The Holy Spirit is a counselor. It counsels us about many problems that we must solve in life. When we are perplexed because we don’t know what to do, the Holy Spirit counsels us so that we can solve our problems according to the Lord’s will. For instance, David received the counseling and help of the Spirit through prayer to the Lord in all things.
The Holy Spirit is a helper. It helps us when we are helpless. We need a lot of help in life. And the Holy Spirit works in our hearts in these moments and helps us. It manages our minds, thoughts, and spirits with the word of God and helps us. When we are weighed down by worries, the Holy Spirit gives us help. It makes us pray and offers solutions. The Holy Spirit is also a guide that takes charge of our hearts and guides us. It enables us to live according to the Lord’s will. Jesus lived by the guidance of the Spirit. The Spirit is a defense and lawyer. It speaks the Word on behalf of God. The prophets and apostles recorded the scriptures with the word given them by the Holy Spirit. When we are put in a situation to speak, the Spirit gives us the words we should say. The Spirit gave the apostles the words to speak when they stood before authorities and persecutors, and defended them.
God sends us the Holy Spirit in the name of the Lord Jesus. The Spirit comes from the Father (John 15:26). And at the same time, Jesus the Son sends us the Spirit (John 15:26). After the resurrection, Jesus appeared before the apostles and said “Receive the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22).
The Holy Spirit comes to our hearts and teaches us all things (v26). The “all things” doesn’t mean everything in this world. This is not referring to the worldly ways to live or school work. What the Holy Spirit teaches us is all things about Jesus. How can we know God? The Holy Spirit teaches this to us. How do we know Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection, his ministry and teachings? The Holy Spirit teaches us these. The Holy Spirit helps us know faith, forgiveness, repentance, eternity, holiness, righteousness, God’s love, mercy, compassion, kindness, etc. The Scripture tells us, “these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit helps us know the deep things of God. The Holy Spirit helps us know everything the Lord has given us. The Holy Spirit helps us realize that everything we have ever received, everything we have that we need is God’s grace. The Holy Spirit teaches us what is true (1 John 2:27). What the Holy Spirit teaches us is truthful and there is no lie. This is because the Holy Spirit teaches us about the Lord of truth and his word. The teachings of the world may sound good to the ears, intriguing, exciting, and fascinating, but these things are deceptive.
The Holy Spirit makes us remember everything Jesus said (v26). The Holy Spirit makes us remember all of Jesus’s teachings, namely both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Holy Spirit puts in our heart the Word of the Lord. Jesus always lived by thinking of God’s Word. This is because the Holy Spirit dwelled in Jesus’s heart. When Jesus was tempted by the devil, he overcame the devil by remembering the Word of God. When we remember the Lord’s word, the Bible, this is the work of the Holy Spirit. This is the evidence that we have the Holy Spirit in our hearts. In this way, the Holy Spirit leads us into the word of truth (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit helps us know the word of truth. The Holy Spirit guides our hearts into the Lord’s word. The work of the Holy Spirit is the work of the Word.
It is not the work of the Holy Spirit when we forget the Lord’s word, don’t remember it and don’t obey it. The Holy Spirit always accompanies the Lord’s word. When we remember secular and worldly things, we have to understand that this is not the work of the Holy Spirit. When our mind is full of money, possessions, children, job, school, a person, situation or worldly matters, this is not the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit expels things that are not the Lord’s word from our hearts. The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with the Word and keeps us away from things that are not the word of God. Thereby the Holy Spirit makes our hearts holy, clean, and pure by the word of truth. I hope in the Lord that the Holy Spirit would come to our hearts and teach us all truths and help us remember them. I wish in the Name of the Lord that we all live by the Holy Spirit.
