강한 바람이 불면 멀쩡한 나무가 쓰러진다. 하지만 어떤 나무는 쓰러지지 않고 그대로 있다. 쓰러지지 않는 나무는 뿌리를 깊이 내리고 있기 때문이다. 믿음도 마찬가지다. 조그만 시련에도 넘어지는 믿음이 있다. 하지만 많은 시련에도 넘어지지 않는 믿음이 있다. 오늘 성경은 견고한 믿음과 그렇지 못한 믿음에 대하여 가르쳐 준다.
24-25절은 견고한 믿음, 25-26절은 무너지는 믿음에 대해서 말한다.
주님은 24절에서 무너지지 않는 믿음이 무엇인지를 설명해 주신다. 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 사람의 믿음은 무너지지 않는다. 여기서 말하는 주님의 말씀은 앞에서 교훈한 주님의 말씀 곧 산상수훈이다. 넓게는 하나님의 모든 말씀 곧 성경을 의미한다. 예수님의 말씀은 어떤 유명한 사람, 학교 선생, 대학교 교수의 말이 아니다. 예수님의 말씀은 생명의 말씀이다. 믿는 자에게 영원한 생명을 주는 진리의 말씀이다. 주님의 말씀은 사람을 구원하는 능력이 있다. 주님의 말씀은 우리를 죄와 사망에서 건지시는 능력이 있다. 주님의 말씀은 우리의 마음과 삶을 거룩하게 능력이 있다. 예수님의 말씀은 사람을 선하고, 진실하고, 정직하고 온전하게 하는 능력이 있다. 주님의 말씀은 전능의 말씀이요 창조의 권능이 있다.
예수님은 말씀하신다. 주님의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 사람은 집을 반석 위에 지은 지혜로운 사람이다(24절). 지금까지 많은 사람이 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 있다. 듣는 것은 매우 중요하다. 왜냐하면 우리는 들으면서 믿음을 갖기 때문이다(롬 10:17). 우리가 주님의 말씀을 듣지 않으면 믿음이 가질 수 없다. 그래서 우리는 먼저 들어야 한다. 우리는 성경에서 그리고 설교와 성경공부를 통해서 듣는다. 우리는 들으면서 알게 되고 깨닫게 된다. 그리고 우리는 듣고 이해하는 것을 행하게 된다. 하지만 우리가 듣는데서 멈춘다면 우리의 믿음은 온전하지 못한다. 그래서 주님은 듣고 행하는 믿음에 대하여 가르쳐 주신다.
예수님의 말씀을 듣고 행한다는 것은 순종을 의미한다. 주님은 순종의 신앙을 원하신다. 행함은 열매요 참 신앙이다. 주님이 말씀을 가르치시는 목적은 행함에 있다. 행함은 주님의 간절한 마음이다. 행함은 거룩함을 낳는다. 행함은 성령의 능력이다. 성령은 말씀을 행할 능력을 준다. 따라서 우리가 주님이 원하시는 진실한 믿음을 갖기 위해서 최선을 다해야 한다. 그것은 곧 행함이다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 배우면서 실천을 위해 온 힘을 다해야 한다. 우리는 행함을 위해 주님의 도우심을 구해야 한다.
주님은 말씀을 행하는 사람은 집을 반석 위에 지은 지혜로운 사람이라고 말씀한다(24절). 예수님은 반석이시다(고전 10:4). 주의 말씀을 행하는 것은 반석이신 주님을 기초로 집을 짓는 것이다. 주님은 영원하신 성자 하나님이시다. 주님은 영원히 견고하시다. 따라서 주님의 말씀을 행하는 사람은 지혜로운 사람이다. 행함은 참 생명과 진실과 영원한 능력을 가져다 준다. 우리는 지혜로운 건축자가 되기 위해서 말씀을 실천해야 한다.
예수님은 말씀을 행하는 믿음은 무너지지 않는다고 말한다(25절). 그것은 집의 기초가 반석이기 때문이다. 행하는 신앙은 폭우가 내리고, 많은 물이 솟아나고, 강풍이 몰아쳐도 그대로 서 있다. 예수님은 수많은 박해와 고난에도 견고하게 서 계셨다. 그 이유는 하나님 아버지의 말씀을 행하셨기 때문이다. 사도 바울은 많은 박해와 고난 중에서 죽을 위기를 여러번 만났다. 하지만 그는 넘어지지 않았다. 그는 말씀을 굳게 지켰기 때문이다. 다윗은 자신을 죽이려는 사울 왕의 박해와 수많은 고난 중에서 견고하게 서 있었다. 그는 주님만 믿고 의지했기 때문이다. 욥은 10명의 자녀가 죽고, 모든 재산이 없어지고, 온 몸에 병이 있어도 주님을 배반하지 않았다. 그는 인내하며 견고하게 서 있었다. 이처럼 말씀을 행하는 믿음은 견고하고, 안정되어 있고, 요동이 없다. 애굽에서 나온 20세 이상의 모든 사람들이 다 넘어졌을 때에 갈렙은 넘어지지 않았다. 그는 하나님의 말씀을 굳게 믿고 붙들었기 때문이다.
우리가 흔들리지 않고 무너지지 않는 믿음을 갖기 위해서는 말씀을 행해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 모래 위에 집을 짓는 것과 같다(26). 실천이 없는 믿음은 무너진다(27). 그는 어리석은 사람이다. 아담은 하나님 말씀을 행하지 않았다. 그는 넘어졌다. 사울 왕도 말씀을 불순종했다. 그는 왕권을 박탈 당했다. 행함이 없는 믿음은 실패한다. 실천 없는 믿음은 유익이 없다. 자녀가 부모님 말씀을 듣고 행하지 않으면 불순종이 된다. 그는 불효자가 되고 부모의 마음을 아프게 한다. 동시에 그것은 부모의 말씀이 소용이 없게 만든다. 그것은 자녀의 도리를 다하지 못하는 것이다.
야고보는 말한다. 행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것이다(약 2:17, 26). 우리는 살아 있고 열매 맺는 믿음을 가져야 한다. 그것은 행함에 있다. 우리는 하나님의 사랑하는 자녀로서 순종해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 사랑과 은혜를 입은 자로서 주의 말씀을 실천해야 한다. 우리는 견고한 신앙을 갖기 위해서 실천해야 한다. 우리는 그리스도인으로서 하나님의 뜻을 이루는 거룩하고 열매 맺는 믿음을 위해 실천해야 한다. 우리는 지혜로운 건축자가 되기 위해서 실천해야 한다.
Unswerving Faith (Matthew 7:24-27)
A windstorm can make a tree fall. However, there are trees that do not fall and stay intact. It’s because these trees are rooted deeply in the earth. Same goes with faith. There is faith that can endure small trials and faith that does not fall even amidst many big trials. Today’s passage teaches us about strong and weak faith. Verses 24-25 talk about firm faith and verses 25-26 about faith that is easily destroyed.
In verse 24, Jesus explains strong and firm faith. The faith of those who listen to the word of God and put it into practice does not fall apart. The word of God that Jesus mentions here refers to his earlier teachings, that is, the Sermon on the Mount. Broadly, it refers to the entire word of God, or the Bible. The words of Jesus are not like the words of a famous person, a teacher, or a professor. Jesus’ words are the words of life. They are eternal words of truth that give eternal life to those who believe. His word has the power to save us. It has the power to deliver us from sin and death. It has the power to make our hearts and lives holy. It has the power to make us good, honest, truthful, and perfect. The word of Jesus is the almighty word that has the power of creation.
Jesus says that those who hear his word and obey it are like wise people who build their house on the rock (v24). To this day, many people have listened to Jesus’ word. Listening to his word is crucial because our faith comes from hearing the word (Romans 10:17). Without hearing the word of God, we cannot have faith. So we must first hear. We hear the word of God through the Bible, sermons, and Bible studies. We come to know and understand from hearing. And then we obey what we have heard and understood. However, if we stop at just hearing and don’t put it into practice, our faith is incomplete. Therefore, Jesus teaches us about faith that hears and obeys.
Hearing the word of Jesus and putting it into practice means obeying. Jesus is pleased with the faith of obedience. Obedience is a fruit of true faith. Jesus’ purpose for teaching is our obedience. Obedience is Jesus’ eager hope toward us. Obedience conceives holiness. It is the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to obey the Lord’s word. Therefore, we must do our best to have the true faith that Jesus seeks. That is, we must put his words into practice. We must learn his words and make every effort to obey by asking the Lord for help.
Jesus says that the one who obeys the Lord’s word is like a wise builder who built the house on the rock (v24). Jesus is the rock (1 Corinthians 10:4). Those who obey the Lord’s word build their houses on Jesus as their foundation. Jesus is the eternal Son of God. Jesus is eternally firm. Thus, those who obey the word of the Lord are wise. Obedience brings life, truth, and eternal power. We must obey the word of God in order to become wise builders.
Jesus says that faith with action does not collapse (v25). Such is a house built on the rock as its foundation. Faith with action remains standing even with heavy rain and storm. Jesus remained unmoved even in times of persecution and hardships by obeying the word of God. Apostle Paul neared death numerous times through persecution and hardships. However, he did not fall down because he kept his faith. David, despite the persecution of King Saul who tried to kill him, remained steady. He trusted in the Lord. Job did not curse or betray the Lord even after his ten children died, his possessions destroyed, and his body was stricken with illness. He persevered and remained unmoved. Such is faith with action – it is solid, stable and does not agitate. When all the Israelites 20 years old and above sinned during the exodus, Caleb did not. He kept strong faith in the word of God.
To possess faith that does not swerve or collapse, we must obey God’s word. Otherwise, we will be like a house built on sand (v26). Faith without action falls down (v27). Such is a foolish person. Adam did not obey God’s word. He fell. King Saul also disobeyed. His kingship was taken away from him. Faith without action fails. Faith without deeds is unfruitful. When a child hears the parent’s instructions but does not follow them, it becomes a disobedience. The child becomes disrespectful and grieves the parent. It also makes the parent’s instructions useless. This is a failure to meet the duty of a child.
James says, “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17, 26). We must possess faith that is alive and fruitful. Such faith is accompanied by action. We must obey the Lord as his beloved children. We must obey the Lord’s word as ones who have received the Lord’s love and grace. We must put the word into practice in order to have solid faith. As Christians, we must put the word into action in order to possess holy and fruitful faith that realizes God’s will. We must obey in order to become wise builders.
