유다의 아사 왕 때에 구스 사람 세라가 100만 군대를 이끌고 공격을 했다. 아사 왕은 하나님께 기도했다. ‘힘이 강한 자와 약한 자 사이에 도와 줄 이는 주 밖에 없나이다’ 아사가 이렇게 기도했더니 하나님이 아사와 유다 사람 앞에서 구스 군대를 물리쳤다. 그래서 아사 왕이 한 사람도 남김 없이 죽이고 승리했다. 우리가 이 세상을 살아갈 때에 힘이 있어야 한다. 우리는 힘이 있을 때에 이길 수 있고 문제를 해결할 수 있다. 누가 나의 힘이 되어 줄 것인가? 오늘 성경은 우리의 힘이 되시는 분을 알려 준다.
다윗은 자기의 힘은 여호와 곧 주님이시라고 말한다. 하나님은 천지를 창조했다. 창조의 권능을 가진 존재는 세상에 없다. 창조의 하나님이 나의 힘이 되신다. 하나님은 전능한 분이다. 사람은 그런 능력이 없다. 우리는 무슨 일을 하고 문제를 해결하면서 많은 한계를 느낀다. 내 자신의 힘이 매우 약하다는 것을 실감한다. 그래서 우리는 좌절하고 낙심하고 주저 않는다. 하나님은 힘의 한계가 없다. 주님은 무한한 능력을 갖고 계신다. 주님은 마음대로 생각대로 다 하실 수 있다. 바로 전능하신 주님이 나의 힘이 되신다. 능력 있는 삶은 주님 안에 있다. 주님은 구원의 능력이 있다. 우리는 죄인으로서 연약한 인간으로서 구원이 필요하다. 구원의 힘을 가지신 분이 주님이시다. 나를 죄와 사망에서 건지시는 힘이 주님께 있다. 나의 모든 고난과 문제에서 구원하는 능력이 주님께 있다.
주님은 나의 생명의 힘이다. 사람은 생사의 권능이 없다. 생명과 죽음의 권세는 주님께 있다. 주님은 죄로 인한 죽은 나를 건지시고 영원한 생명을 주셨다. 주님은 나의 영원한 생명이시다. 주님은 나의 삶의 힘이시다. 믿음으로 산다는 것은 하나님의 능력으로 사는 것을 의미한다. 내 삶의 힘은 주님께 있다. 우리는 내 능력과 세상에 있는 것을 능력으로 삼지 않는다. 우리는 주님의 힘으로 산다. 주님은 나의 건강의 힘이시다. 내 능력으로 건강을 유지할 수 없다. 나를 지으신 주님의 능력이 영육간에 건강을 보장해 주신다. 주님은 나의 마음의 힘이시다. 주님은 내 마음을 붙들어 주시고 지키시고 강건하게 해 주신다. 주님은 나의 영적인 힘이시다. 하나님은 내 영을 지으시고 구원하셨다. 모든 영의 아버지 하나님께서 내 영혼을 안전하게 지키신다(시 121:7). 주님은 모든 악한 영적 세력으로부터 내 영을 보호 하신다.
주님은 우리의 대적을 이기는 힘이시다. 믿음의 삶은 영적 전투다. 주님은 우리가 믿음의 선한 싸움에서 이기게 하신다. 주님은 우리 앞에서 우리를 위해 싸우신다. 우리는 주의 힘으로 승리한다. 세상을 이길 힘도 주님께 있다. 우리는 세상을 이길 힘이 없다. 하지만 주님이 세상의 유혹과 공격을 이길 힘을 주신다. 우리는 풀과 같은 연약한 존재다. 그래서 우리에게는 힘이 필요하다. 주님이 나의 힘이시다. 우리는 주님의 힘으로 살아야 한다.
주님은 나의 방패이시다. 방패는 안전과 보호를 의미한다. 다윗은 수많은 대적이 있었다. 주님은 다윗을 안전하게 지켜 주셨다. 그래서 주님은 다윗이 어떠한 해도 입지 않게 해 주셨다. 주님은 우리가 믿음으로 살 때에 보호해 주신다. 우리의 심령, 생각, 삶, 가정, 직장, 자녀를 지켜 주신다. 성경은 “여호와께서 너의 출입을 지금부터 영원까지 지키시리로다”(시 121:8)라고 말한다. “여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라”(잠 18:10). 나를 사랑하셔서 나를 위해 죽으신 주님이 안전하게 지켜 주신다. 나의 모든 안전은 주님께 있다. 돈, 재물, 명예, 권세가 우리의 안전을 보장해 주지 않는다. 성경은 여호와를 앙망하는 자는 새 힘을 얻는다고 말한다(사 40:31). 우리가 주를 소망하며 살 때에 주님이 공급하시는 힘을 얻는다.
주님이 나의 힘과 방패가 되는 삶은 무엇인가? 그것은 마음으로 주를 의지하는 것이다. 성경은 “여호와를 의지하는 자는 안전하리라”(잠 29:25). 우리의 마음이 주를 향해야 한다. 세상을 바라보면 주님은 나의 힘과 방패가 되지 않는다. 성경은 “하나님은 그를 의지하는 자의 방패시니라”(잠 30:5)라고 말한다. 주님은 자기를 의지할 때에 보호해 주신다. 다니엘은 변함없이 주님만 의지했다. 주님은 사자굴에 들어간 다니엘을 지켜주셨다. 우리는 주님께 순종해야 한다. 주의 말씀을 순종하면 주님은 나의 힘과 방패가 되어 주신다. 그러나 주님의 말씀을 불순종하면 주님은 힘과 방패가 되어 주지 않는다. 예수님은 십자가에 죽기까지 순종했다. 하나님은 사망의 해를 입지 않고 승리하게 하셨다. 순종이 없는 삶은 매우 불안하고 위험하다.
믿음은 주의 도우심으로 사는 것이다. 내가 주를 의지하고 순종하면 주님이 도우신다. 주님이 도와 주실 때에 삶은 평안하고 형통하고 안전하다. “우리의 도움은 천지를 지으신 여호와의 이름에 있도다”(시 124:8). 우리가 주의 도움을 받으면 구원을 얻는다. 그래서 우리는 기뻐하며 찬송한다. 우리는 주님을 나의 힘과 방패로 삼아야 한다. 그러면 주님은 나를 도우신다. 우리는 기쁨과 은혜와 찬양이 충만할 것이다. 주님은 말씀하신다. “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 나를 믿는 자는 내가 하는 일을 그도 할 것이요 그보다 큰 일도 하리라”(요 14:12). 우리가 나의 힘되시고 방패되신 주를 온전히 의지하며 살자. 가장 큰 힘은 믿음에 있다. “믿는 자에게는 능히 하지 못할 일이 없느니라” (막 9:23). 우리는 믿음으로 주님이 주시는 큰 힘과 능력으로 살자.
Strength and Shield (Psalm 28:7)
During the time of Asa, king of Judah, Zerah the Cushite marched out against Judah with an army of thousands upon thousands. King Asa prayed to God, “Lord, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty.” And the Lord struck down the Cushites before Asa and Judah. Without a single survivor, the Cushites were defeated by Judah. When we live in this world, we need strength. Only then can we overcome the problems we face. Who is our strength? Today’s passage tells us who our strength is.
David says that his strength is the Lord. God created heaven and earth. There is no one else who has the power of creation. The God of creation is our strength. God is almighty. No human is almighty. When we try to resolve a problem, we feel our limitations. We realize how strengthless we are and become discouraged and dismayed. God’s strength is limitless. God possesses boundless strength. God is able to do whatever he wants. This almighty God is our strength. A life of strength belongs to God. The Lord has the power of salvation. As sinners and imperfect humans, we need salvation. The one with the strength to save is the Lord. He has the strength to deliver us from sin and death. He has the power to save us from all hardships and problems.
The Lord is our strength of life. We cannot control our life and death. But the Lord has the authority over our life and death. The Lord saved us who died from sin and gave us eternal life. The Lord is our eternal life. The Lord is the strength of our life. To live by faith means to live by God’s strength. Our life’s strength is in the Lord. We do not rely on our own strength or the things of this world. We live by the strength of the Lord. The Lord is the strength of our health. By our own strength we cannot keep healthy. The Lord who created us maintains our physical and spiritual health. The Lord is the strength of our mind. The Lord supports our mind and keeps it healthy and strong. The Lord is the strength of our spirit. The Lord created our spirit and saved us. God the Father who is the author of our soul preserves and protects our soul (Psalm 121:7). The Lord protects us from all evil spiritual power.
The Lord is our strength against our enemies. The life of faith is a spiritual fight. The Lord helps us to win our good fight of faith. The Lord goes before us to fight for us. We gain victory through the Lord’s strength. The strength to overcome the world is in the Lord. We do not have the strength to overcome the world, but the Lord gives us the strength to overcome the world’s temptations and attacks. We are weak like grass. So we need strength. The Lord is our strength. We must live by the strength of the Lord.
The Lord is our shield. Shield represents safety and protection. David had numerous enemies. The Lord protected David from his enemies. The Lord protected him from harm. The Lord protects us when we live by faith. The Lord protects our soul, thoughts, life, family, job and children. The Scripture says, “the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8). “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous run into it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10). The Lord who loved us and died for us keeps us safe. Our safety belongs to the Lord. Money, possessions, reputation or power do not guarantee protection. The Scripture says that those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31). When we live with hope in the Lord, we receive the strength he provides.
What kind of life is the one in which Jesus is our strength and shield? It is trusting in him from the heart. The Bible says, “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” (Proverbs 29:25). Our hearts should turn towards the Lord. If we turn towards the world, the Lord does not become our strength and shield. The Bible says, “He is a shield to those who take refuge in him” (Proverbs 30:5). The Lord protects us when we trust in him. For example, Daniel trusted in the Lord unswervingly. So the Lord protected him when he was thrown into the lion’s den. We must obey the Lord. When we obey the word of God, he becomes our strength and shield. However, when we disobey, he does not become our strength and shield. Jesus obeyed to death on the cross. And God gave him victory without being in any way harmed by death.
Faith is living by the help of the Lord. If we trust in the Lord and obey him, he will be our help. When our Lord helps us, our life becomes peaceful, prosperous, and secure. “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalms 124:8). When we receive God’s help, we will be saved. Then we come to be joyful and praise the Lord. Therefore, we ought to make God our strength and shield. Then He will be our help, and we will be filled with joy, grace, and praise. The Lord says, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father” (John 14:12). So let us trust wholeheartedly in the Lord who is our strength and shield. The biggest help is in faith. “Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23). Let us live by the huge strength and power that the Lord grants us through faith.
