사도 빌립이 나다나엘을 전도했다. 빌립은 내가 메시야를 만났다고 했다. 그래서 나다나엘은 빌립의 말을 듣고 예수님을 구주로 믿었다. 듣는 것은 믿음의 통로요, 배움의 초석이다. 사람은 들으면서 믿게 된다. 그래서 우리가 잘 듣는 것은 매우 중요하다. 우리가 읽은 성경은 오실 메시야에 대한 예언이다. 오늘은 대강절 첫 주일이다. 예수님께서 이 땅에 오심을 기억하면서 기념하는 절기다.
구주 예수님의 오심은 예언되어 있었다. 구약 성경에는 예수 그리스도의 오심에 대한 많은 기록이 있다. 오늘 본문은 그 가운데 하나다. 하나님은 자신의 생각과 계획을 미리 알려 주신다. 성경은 말한다. “주 여호와께서는 자기의 비밀을 그 종 선지자들에게 보이지 아니하고는 결코 행하심이 없으시리라”(아모스 3:7). 하나님은 메시아로서 예수님을 보내실 것을 미리 알려 주셨다. 하나님은 모든 것을 아시는 분이시다. 사람이 알 수 없는 미래의 일을 다 아신다. 그것은 구약과 신약에 나타나 있다.
예수님의 오심은 수많은 선지자들이 예언하였다. 예수님은 하나님이 약속하시고 예언하신대로 이 세상에 구주로 오셨다. 예수님은 성경의 예언대로 사시고, 죽으시고, 부활하시고, 다시 오실 것이다. 오늘 성경은 ‘네 하나님 여호와께서’라고 말한다. 여기서 ‘네’는 이스라엘을 말한다. 하나님은 구약에서 이스라엘의 하나님으로 불리운다. 그 하나님은 신약에서 구원 받은 성도의 하나님 아버지가 되신다. 하나님은 먼저 사랑하는 자기 백성들에게 예수님의 오심을 약속했다.
오늘 성경은 말한다. ‘너희 가운데 너희 형제 중에서’라고 말한다. 예수님은 인간적으로, 혈육적으로 이스라엘의 형제로 오셨다. 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도는 자기 백성의 형제요, 이스라엘의 구주이시며 왕이시다. 메시야이신 구주 예수님은 혈통상 이스라엘 민족으로 태어 나셨다. 사람으로 오신 예수님은 다른 민족에게서 태어나지 않으셨다. 예수님은 한국, 영국, 미국, 아프리카 민족으로 오시지 않으셨다. 예수님은 성경대로 유대 민족으로 오셔서 구주 사역을 완성하셨다. 이 예수님이 나의 구주이요, 만 왕의 왕이시요, 만 주의 주이시다. 우리는 십자가와 부활의 주 예수를 믿고 부름으로 구원받는다(롬 10:13). 신약에서 예수님은 장자로 표현되었다. “이는 그로 많은 형제 중에서 맏아들이 되게 하려 하심이니라”(롬 8:29). 하나님의 영원하신 아들이신 예수님은 우리를 형제라고 부르신다. 성경은 말한다. “거룩하게 하시는 이와 거룩하게 함을 입은 자들이 다 한 근원에서 난지라 그러므로 형제라 부르기를 부끄러워하지 아니하시고”(히 2:11). 예수님은 믿음으로 하나님의 자녀된 우리를 형제라고 부르신다. 우리는 하나님의 자녀로서 예수님과 함께 상속자가 된다. 성경은 “자녀이면 상속자 곧 하나님의 상속자요 그리스도와 함께 한 상속자니”(롬 8:17)라고 말한다. 우리는 주님과 함께 영생과 천국을 유업으로 받는다. 그리고 이것은 예수님의 십자가와 부활의 은총의 결과다.
오늘 성경은 ‘네 형제 중에서 너를 위하여 나와 같은 선지자 하나를 일으키신다’라고 말한다. 예수님은 우리를 위하여 선지자로 오셨다. 모세는 선지자다. 모세는 하나님이 자기와 같은 선지자 한 사람을 세울 것이라고 말한다. 바로 그 선지자가 예수님이다. 예수님은 모세처럼 하나님의 말씀을 자기 백성에게 전하신 참 선지자이시다. 그래서 예수님이 사역하실 때에 이스라엘 사람들은 예수님을 세상에 오실 참 선지자라고 생각했다(요 6:14; 요 7:40). 예수님은 하나님이 세우신 다른 많은 선지자들 중에서 구주로서 하나님 나라의 복음을 전하시고 실천하신 참 선지자이시다. 목회자도 선지자라고 한다. 예수님은 주의 말씀을 행하는 사람이 참 선지자라고 선언한다(마 7:24-27). 예수님처럼 말과 행위가 일치되는 사역자가 참 선지자이다.
우리는 구주이시며 하나님의 아들이신 선지자 예수님의 말씀을 들어야 한다. 유대인들은 하나님 말씀에 순종해서 주의 말씀을 잘 들어야 했다. 하지만 그들은 듣지 않고 믿지 않았다. 그 결과 그들은 죄 가운데서 멸망했다. 하나님은 자기 아들을 보내셔서 모든 사람이 예수님께 잘 듣기를 원하신다. 왜냐하면 사람이 듣고 믿어서 구원을 받게 하기 위해서다. 만일 예수님의 말씀을 듣지 않고 믿지 않으면 죄 가운데서 멸망한다(요 3:16, 36). 죄인 된 인간이 예수님의 말씀을 듣지 않고 믿지 않으면 구원 받지 못한다. 성경은 말한다. “누구든지 내 이름으로 전하는 내 말을 듣지 아니하는 자는 내게 벌을 받을 것이요”(신 18:19). 듣고 믿지 않으면 하나님의 형벌이 있다.
우리는 하나님이 보내신 구주 예수 그리스도의 말씀을 겸손한 마음으로 들어야 한다. 예수님의 구원의 말씀을 잘 듣는 사람이 구원을 받고 영생의 복을 받는다. 그래서 우리는 듣는 훈련을 잘 해야 한다. 잘 듣는 사람이 잘 믿는다. 주의 말씀을 듣기를 거부하면 안 된다. 주님의 생명의 말씀을 귀를 기울여 잘 듣기 바란다. 그래서 믿음으로 구원 받고 동시에 바르고, 참되고, 온전한 믿음을 갖기를 바란다.
Listen to the Word of the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:15)
Apostle Philip led Nathanael to Jesus. Philip told Nathanael that he met the Messiah. Nathanael believed what he was told and accepted Jesus as his Savior. Hearing is the path to faith and the cornerstone of learning. People believe what they hear. That is why it is important that we listen well. The Scripture we read is the prophecy of the Messiah to come. Today is the first Sunday of Advent. It’s the time of the year that we remember the coming of Jesus and celebrate.
The coming of the Lord Jesus is prophesied. The Old Testament has numerous prophecies of the coming of Jesus Christ. Today’s passage is one of those. God foretells his thoughts and plans. Amos 3:7 says, “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.” God foretold the prophets that he will send Jesus the Messiah. God knows everything. God knows the future of all people as demonstrated in the Old and New Testaments.
Many prophets testified to the coming of Jesus. As promised and foretold by God, Jesus came to the world as our Savior. As it was prophesied, Jesus came, died, and was resurrected, and he will come again. Today’s passage starts with “The Lord your God” – the “your” in this passage refers to the Israelites. In the Old Testament, God was called the God of the Israelites. In the New Testament, God is the God the Father of those who are saved. God promised to his beloved people first that he will send Jesus.
Today’s passage says, “from among you, from your fellow Israelites.” As a human, in flesh and blood, Jesus came as one of the Irsaelites. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was a brother of his people, the Savior of the Israelites, and a king. Lord Jesus who is the Messiah was born as a descendent of the Isarelites. He did not trace his origin to other places like Korea, Britain, America, or Africa. As the Scripture had prophesied, Jesus came as a Jew and fulfilled his ministry as a Savior. This Jesus is our Lord, King of kings, Lord of lords. We are saved when we believe and call on the name of the Lord Jesus of the crucifixion and the resurrection (Romans 10:13). According to the New Testament, Jesus was the firstborn son. Romans 8:29 says that “He would be the firstborn among many brothers.” Jesus the Son of the eternal God calls us his brothers. The Scripture says, “Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters” (Hebrews 2:11). Jesus calls us brothers who have been saved and become children of God. As children of God, we become heirs with Jesus. The Scripture says, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory” (Romans 8:17). With the Lord Jesus, we will receive eternal life and heaven as inheritance. This is the result of the blessing of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.
Today’s passage says that God “will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you.” Jesus also came as a prophet. Moses was a prophet. Moses prophesied that God will raise up a prophet like him. This prophet is Jesus. Like Moses, Jesus was a true prophet who gave his people the Word of God. That is why during Jesus’ ministry, the Israelites considered Jesus as the true prophet who was to come into the world (John 6:14; John 7:40). Among many prophets sent by God, Jesus was a true prophet who preached and practiced the kingdom of God as a Savior. Ministers are also considered prophets. Jesus said that whoever practices the Word of the Lord is a true prophet (Matthew 7:24-27). The minister whose preaching and actions align like those of Jesus is a true prophet.
We must listen to the Word of Prophet Jesus who is the Savior, the Son of God. The Jews had to obey the Word of God and listen to it. However, they refused to listen and believe. The consequence was sin and death. God sent his son and wants everyone to listen to his son so that they can be saved. If we do not listen to Jesus and do not believe in him, we die in our sins (John 3:16, 36). When we sinners do not listen to the Word of Jesus and do not believe in him, we cannot be saved. In Deuteronomy 18:19, God says, “I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.” When we do not listen and believe, there is punishment.
With humility, we must listen to the Word of our Lord Jesus Christ whom God sent. Whoever listens well to the word of salvation is saved and receives the blessing of eternal life. Thus, we must train ourselves to listen to the Word of God. The one who listens well also believes. We must not reject the Word of God. I hope that you would listen and pay full attention to the Lord’s word of life and thus be saved and gain proper, truthful, and complete faith.
