개미와 베짱이가 있다. 개미는 여름에 땀을 흘리며 부지런히 일을 한다. 개미는 겨울에 먹을 양식을 저축해 둔다. 그런데 베짱이는 일은 하지 않고 나무 위에서 노래 부르며 놀고 있다. 추운 겨울이 왔다. 개미는 먹을 것이 넉넉하여 걱정이 없다. 하지만 베짱이는 춥고 배가 고프다. 그는 겨울에 먹을 양식을 준비하지 못했기 때문이다. 부지런함에는 먹을 것과 얻는 것이 많다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 부지런히 주를 섬기라고 교훈한다.
부지런함은 사람의 행동, 삶에 나타난다. 그 사람의 행동을 보면 부지런한지 그렇지 않는지를 알 수 있다. 부지런함은 게으름과 반대다. 어떤 사람은 새벽 3시에 일어나서 하루종일 일을 한다. 어떤 사람은 해가 떠서 낮이 되었는데도 잠을 자고 있다. 부지런한 사람은 시간을 아끼고 잘 활용한다. 그는 시간을 낭비하면서 헛 되게 보내지 않는다. 그는 생각을 하고, 계획을 하고, 각오를 하고 실천한다. 어떤 사람은 낮에 하는 일이 있고, 밤에 하는 일이 있다. 그는 계획을 세워서 열심히 일한다. 부지런한 사람은 시간을 효율적으로, 최대로 활용한다. 우리는 주를 섬기는 일에 계획을 세우고, 시간을 바치고, 부지런해야 한다.
부지런한 사람은 목표를 세우고 소망을 갖고 산다. 사람은 목표와 희망이 없으면 게을러지기 쉽다. 직장인이 집을 사려는 목표를 가지면 부지런히 일한다. 학생이 1등을 목표로 하면 열심히 공부한다. 우리는 주를 섬기는 일에 목표를 세우고 열심을 내야 한다. 우리는 성경을 읽고, 봉사하고, 말씀을 실천하는 일에 목표를 세워야 한다. 부지런한 사람은 자기 본분에 집중한다. 그는 자기 일을 뒤로 미루거나 가볍게 여기지 않는다. 그는 자기 책임감을 느끼고 최선을 다한다. 부지런한 사람은 ‘지금 해야지’ 한다. 게으른 사람은 ‘나 중에 해야지’ 한다. 부지런한 사람은 일의 성취와 효율성을 생각한다. 우리는 주님의 일에 전심전력해야 한다. 우리는 봉사하고, 예배하고, 성경을 읽고 행하는 일에 온 힘을 다 해야 한다.
부지런한 사람은 움직임이 많다. 게으름 사람은 움직이기를 싫어한다. 성경은 말한다. “게으른 사람은 손을 그릇에 넣고도 입으로 올리기를 괴로워하느니라”(잠 26:15). 게으른 사람은 움직임이 많지 않다. 부지런한 사람은 움직임이 많다. 부지런한 운동선수는 밤낮 쉴새 없이 움직이고 훈련한다. 우리는 주를 섬기는 일에 많이 움직여야 한다. 우리는 믿음의 일, 맡은 일, 예배하는 일, 주를 배우고 순종하는 일에 열심이 움직여야 한다. 그러면 우리의 믿음이 성장하고 열매를 맺게 된다.
부지런한 사람은 열심이 있다. 그는 열정을 가지고 일한다. 부지런한 학생은 항상 열심히 공부한다. 그는 최선을 다해서 공부한다. 세계적으로 유명한 야구선수가 있다. 그는 다른 선수보다 먼저 나와서 연습하고 더 늦게 퇴근한다. 그는 자기 힘을 다하고 열심을 낸다. 그래서 그는 최고의 선수가 되었다. 우리는 주를 섬기는 일에 열심을 내야 한다. 우리는 뜨거운 열정을 가지고 신앙생활을 해야 한다.
부지런한 사람은 다른 사람보다 앞서고 본이 된다. 사람들은 게으른 사람보다 부지런한 사람을 본보기로 삼는다. 안나 선지자는 성전에서 밤낮 기도했다. 주를 위한 열심은 주를 위해 많은 것을 상취하게 한다. 사도 바울은 자기 목숨도 아끼지 않고 열정을 다해서 사역했다. 그는 아시아와 유럽에 복음을 전했고 성경을 13-14권을 썼다. 열심이 없는 신앙은 주를 위해 이루는 것이 없다.
부지런한 사람은 신실함이 있다. 예수님은 자기 일에 신실했다. 주님은 자기 사명에 죽도록 충성했다. 예수님은 자기 사명만 생각하고 그 일을 신실하게 성취했다. 예수님은 왕이 되고, 성공하고, 인기 있고, 사람의 영광을 얻는 것에는 관심이 없으셨다. 예수님은 자기를 보내신 아버지 하나님의 뜻을 이루는 일에만 집중했다. 우리는 믿음의 삶에 신실해야 한다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 배우고 행하는 일에 신실해야 한다. 우리는 주를 섬기는 일에 신실해야 한다. 우리는 형제와 이웃을 사랑하는 일에 신실해야 한다. 우리는 주를 본받아서 선을 행하는 일에 부지런하고 신실해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 뜻을 이루는 일에 신실해야 한다. 우리는 예수님을 본받아서 주님을 섬기고 사랑하는 일에 부지런해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 부지런한 성도가 되어야 한다.
Serving the Lord Diligently (Romans 12:11)
There was an ant and a grasshopper. The ant worked up a sweat in the summer and saved food for the winter. The grasshopper on the other hand did not work but played around singing on a tree. The cold winter approached. The ant had enough food and had no worries. However, the grasshopper was cold and starving. It was because the grasshopper did not prepare for the winter. When we are diligent, we gain a lot. Today’s passage teaches us to serve the Lord with diligence.
You can tell a diligent person by their actions and life. Diligence is the opposite of laziness. There are those who get up at three in the morning to work all day. Others are still sleeping even though the sun is up. A diligent person cherishes every hour and uses it effectively. They do not waste time in vain. They think, make a plan, and carry it out with determination. Some people work during the day and others work at night. They work hard with plans. A diligent person uses their time most efficiently. We must be diligent in serving our Lord with set plans and dedicating our times.
A diligent person has goals and is full of hope. We can easily become lazy when we do not have goals or hope. When a worker has a plan to buy a house, they work hard. When a student has a plan to be first in class, they study hard. We must have a plan for serving our Lord so we can do it with diligence. We have to have goals for Bible reading, serving the Lord, and obeying the Word. A diligent person focuses on their duty. They do not delay their work or consider it lightly. They have a sense of responsibility and do their best. A diligent person thinks, “I will do it now.” A lazy person thinks, “I will do it later.” A diligent person thinks about accomplishment and efficiency of their work. We must put our wholehearted effort in the Lord’s work. We must serve, worship, and read the Bible with all our strength.
A diligent person is very active. A lazy person is very idle. The Bible says, “The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth” (Proverbs 26:15). A lazy person lacks movement. A diligent person moves a lot. A diligent athlete trains day and night restlessly. We must be active in serving the Lord. We must be active in the work of faith, work assigned to us, in worship, and in learning about the Lord and obeying His Word. Then, our faith will grow and bear abundant fruit.
A diligent person has fervor. They work with fervor. A diligent student studies with fervor. They do their best in their studies. There is a famous baseball player. He arrives at the training earlier and leaves later than anyone else. He puts all his effort into training and thus has become the best baseball player. We must put all our effort into serving the Lord. We must carry out our work of faith with fervor.
A diligent person is ahead of everyone else and is exemplary. We are inspired by diligent people, not lazy people. Prophetess Anna prayed day and night in the temple. Fervor for the Lord leads to accomplishments in the Lord. Apostle Paul did not spare his life in serving the Lord. He spread the Gospel in Asia and Europe and wrote 13 to 14 books of the Bible. Faith without fervor does not lead to any accomplishment.
A diligent person is faithful. Jesus was faithful in his work. The Lord gave up his life for his work. Jesus was focused on his ministry and completed it faithfully. Jesus was not interested in becoming a king, popular, or getting praises from men. Jesus was fully focused on accomplishing the will of God the Father who sent him. We must be sincere in our life of faith. We must be faithful in learning and living by the Word of the Lord. We must be faithful in serving the Lord. We must be faithful in loving our brothers and neighbors. We must imitate our Lord and be faithful and diligent in doing good. We must be faithful in doing the will of the Lord. We must imitate Jesus and be diligent in serving and loving the Lord. We must become diligent saints.
