사과를 재배하는 농부는 많은 열매를 소망한다. 많은 열매를 얻기 위해서는 잘 가꾸고, 많은 수고와 노력이 필요하다. 콩을 재배하는 농부는 지난해보다 더 많은 수확을 원한다. 이를 위해서 농부는 좋은 땅을 만들어야 한다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 열매 맺는 신앙에 대한 교훈을 준다.
오늘 성경의 주제는 씨를 뿌리는 자의 비유이다. 그렇다면 누가 씨를 뿌리는가? 농부는 밭에 씨를 뿌려야 자라서 열매를 거둘 수 있다. 씨를 뿌리는 분은 예수님이다. 농부는 농사를 짖기 위해서 논과 밭에 씨를 뿌리고 심는다. 농부는 밭에 콩, 밀, 옥수수 등을 뿌리고 심는다. 만일 농부가 씨를 뿌리지 않으면 거둘 수 없다. 성경은 심은대로 거둔다고 말한다(갈 6:7-8). 무엇을 심었는가에 따라서 결과가 다르다. 농부가 콩을 심으면 콩을 거둔다. 콩을 심었는데 옥수수가 나지 않는다. 사람이 육체를 따라서 행하면 썩어질 것을 거둔다. 하지만 성령을 따라서 행하면 영생을 거둔다. 성경은 많이 심는 자는 많이 거두고 적게 심는 자는 적게 거둔다고 말한다(고후 9:6). 좁은 땅에 심으면 적게 거두고, 넓은 땅에 심으면 많이 거둔다.
예수님은 온 세상 사람들에게 씨를 뿌리는 분이시다. 예수님은 성경과 설교 그리고 성경공부와 전도를 통해서 씨를 뿌리신다. 씨는 예수님 말씀을 의미한다. 예수님은 사람들에게 천국 복음의 씨앗을 뿌리신다. 주님은 세상에 속한 교훈을 뿌리지 않는다. 주님이 뿌리는 말씀은 씨앗이 된다. 왜냐하면 주의 말씀을 뿌리지 않으면 열매를 거둘 수 없기 때문이다. 예수님은 지금도 열매를 기대하면서 씨를 뿌리신다. 그리고 우리는 주님의 기대에 부응해야 한다. 그래서 주님을 기쁘게 해 드려야 한다.
밭은 사람의 마음이다. 예수님은 말씀의 씨앗을 사람의 마음에 뿌리신다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 듣고, 읽고, 배울 때에 말씀의 씨앗이 마음의 밭에 뿌려진다. 밭은 여러 종류다. 예수님은 네 종류의 밭이 있다고 말씀한다. 그것은 길 가와 같은 밭, 돌짝 밭, 가시떨기, 그리고 좋은 땅이다(마 13:3-8). 예수님은 좋은 땅 외에는 열매를 맺지 못한다고 말씀한다. 사실 모래 밭에 뿌리면 열매를 거둘 수 없다. 거기에는 열매 맺는 밭이 있고 열매 맺지 못하는 밭이 있다. 열매를 맺지 못하는 마음이 있다. 거기에는 주의 말씀의 씨앗은 뿌려졌지만 결실이 없다. 열매가 없으면 농부의 수고가 무익하게 된다. 우리가 열매를 맺지 못하면 우리를 향한 주님의 사역이 무익하게 된다.
예수님은 열매 맺는 마음은 좋은 땅이라고 말씀한다. 우리가 열매를 맺기 위해서는 좋은 땅이 되어야 한다. 그렇다면 좋은 땅은 무엇일까요? 첫째는 믿음으로 잘 듣는 마음이다. 예수님 말씀을 들은 대로 믿는 마음이다. 우리가 주의 말씀을 듣고 믿지 않으면 말씀의 역사가 없다. 말씀에 있는 주의 능력이 역사하지 않는다. 우리가 주의 말씀을 믿을 때에 주님의 능력이 역한다. 예수님의 12 제자들은 주의 말씀을 믿음으로 들었다. 그래서 그들은 말씀의 능력을 힘 입어 주의 사도로서 복음전도의 사역을 했다. 주의 말씀은 믿을 때에 열매를 맺는다. 왕의 신하는 자기의 병든 아들이 살아 있다는 예수님의 말씀을 믿고 갔다. 그 아들은 믿은대로 살아났다. 우리는 믿음으로 말씀을 들어야 한다.
또한 우리는 성령으로 들어야 한다. 좋은 땅은 인간적이고 세상적인 동기가 아니라 성령으로 듣는 마음이다. 우리는 예수님 말씀을 들을 때에 생명의 말씀, 진리의 거룩한 말씀으로 들어야 한다. 주님의 말씀은 세상적인 교훈이 아니기 때문이다. 우리가 성령으로 들을 때에 바르게 듣고 이해할 수 있다. 우리는 사람의 말로 들어서는 안 된다. 데살로니가교회 성도들은 바울 사도가 전한 말을 하나님 말씀으로 들었다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 기도하면서 성령으로 들어야 한다. 우리가 성령으로 들을 때에 말씀이 마음에서 역사한다.
좋은 땅은 주의 말씀을 깨닫는 마음이다. 우리가 듣고도 깨닫지 못하면 무슨 의미인지 알 수 없다. 우리는 깨닫고 이해할 때에 바르게 알 수 있다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 이해하고 확실하게 알기 위해서 노력해야 한다. 좋은 땅은 주님의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 사람이다. 우리가 말씀을 듣고 깨닫고 행할 때에 열매를 맺는다. 말씀의 씨앗은 실천을 통해서 자라고 결실한다. 예수님은 하나님 말씀을 실천했다. 그래서 예수님은 헤아릴 수 없는 열매를 맺었다. 열매 없는 삶은 불순종이다. 우리가 말씀을 행한 만큼 많은 열매를 맺는다. 베드로는 주의 말씀을 순종하여 많은 고기를 잡았다. 우리가 100배, 60배, 30배의 결실을 하기 위해서 주의 말씀을 실천해야 한다. 주의 말씀을 행하는 곳에 열매가 있기 때문이다. 새해에는 더 많은 열매를 맺기 위해서 주의 말씀을 듣고 깨닫고 실천하자.
Bearing Fruit (Matthew 13:23)
Farmers who cultivate apples hope for abundant fruit. To harvest a lot of fruit, it requires a great amount of care, effort, and work. Farmers who cultivate beans want to yield more beans than the past year. To attain this, they must provide good soil. Today’s passage teaches us about faith that bears fruit.
Today’s topic is the parable of the sower. Who sows the seeds? Farmers must sow seeds, which grow and bear fruit. The sower is Jesus. A farmer sows and plants seeds in the fields to farm. They may sow and plant beans, wheat, or corn in the fields. If they do not sow, they cannot reap. The Bible says that we reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7-8). The result differs based on what we sowed. For example, if a farmer sows beans, they will reap beans. Corns do not grow where beans were sowed. If a person lives by the flesh, they will reap destruction. However, if they live by the Spirit, they will reap eternal life. The Bible says those who sow bountifully will also reap bountifully, and those who sow sparingly will reap sparingly (2 Corinthians 9:6). If one sows in a small field, they will reap a small amount; if they sow in a large field, they will reap a large amount.
Jesus is the sower who sows seeds to all people. He sows seed through the Bible, sermons, Bible studies, and evangelism. Seed refers to the word of Jesus. Jesus sows the seed of the kingdom of heaven to people. He does not sow teachings of the world. The word that he sows becomes seed, because if we do not sow the word of the Lord, there is no fruit to reap. Even now, Jesus sows seed with hope for fruit. And we must live up to his expectations and please him.
The field is our mind. Jesus sows the seed of the Word into people’s minds. When we hear, read, and learn the word of God, the seed of the Word gets sown in our hearts. There are many types of fields. Jesus says there are four types of fields. They are: the path, rocky places, thorns, and good soil (Matthew 13:3-8). Jesus says that all fields except for the good soil cannot bear fruit. We cannot bear fruit if we sow on sand. There are fields that can bear fruit and fields that cannot. There is a mind that cannot bear fruit. Although the word of the Lord is sown, there is no fruit. Lack of fruit makes the farmer’s toil futile. When we do not bear fruit, the Lord’s ministry toward us becomes futile.
Jesus says that the hearts that bear fruit are a good soil. To bear fruit, we ought to become good soil. Now what is good soil? First, it is a mind that listens with faith, the mind that believes just as they heard the word of the Lord. If we do not listen or believe, we cannot see the work of the Word or experience its power. It is when we believe the word of God that his power works in our lives. Jesus’ twelve disciples listened to his word with faith. So with the power of the Word, they performed the ministry of preaching the gospel as the apostles of the Lord. We bear fruit when we believe in the word of God. A king’s servant believed Jesus’ word that his sick son was alive, and he went back home in faith. And his son was alive as he had believed. We must listen to the Word with faith.
Moreover, we must listen to the Word with the Spirit. The good soil is a mind that listens, not with worldly motivations, but with the Holy Spirit. When we hear the word of Jesus, we must hear it as the holy word of life and of truth because his word is not worldly teaching. When we listen with the Holy Spirit, we can listen and understand properly. We must not listen to the Word like it is some human word. The believers in the Thessalonian church listened to Paul’s preaching as the word of God. We must listen to the word of the Lord with the Holy Spirit, in prayer. When we believe with the Holy Spirit, the Word works in our hearts.
The good soil is a mind that understands the word of God. When we hear but do not understand, we cannot know the meaning. When we understand well, then we can know the meaning correctly. We must make every effort to understand and know his Word with certainty. The good soil is a person who listens to the Word and puts it into practice. We bear fruit when we listen, understand, and put the Word into practice. The seed of the Word grows and bears fruit through practice. Jesus put God’s word into practice, so he bore inestimable fruit. Fruitless life is disobedience. We bear as much fruit as we obey. Peter obeyed Jesus and caught many fish. We must put Jesus’ word into practice to bear a hundred, sixty, or thirty times. When we obey, we bear fruit. Let us listen, understand, and put God’s word into practice to bear a lot more abundant fruit in the new year.
