마음이 급한 사람은 운전할 때에 속도를 내고 과속한다. 그는 앞에 가는 차가 천천히 간다고 생각하고 화를 내고 짜증을 낸다. 하지만 알고 보면 앞에 가는 차는 법규를 지키며 정상 속도로 가고 있다. 그는 자신이 불법을 행하는 것을 알지 못하고 있다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 유대인들의 율법 준수에 대하여 말하고 있다. 유대인들은 예수님이 안식일을 지키지 않는다고 말한다. 우리는 무엇이 바른 율법 준수인지를 성경을 통해서 배울 수 있다.
예수님은 19절에서 ‘모세가 너희에게 율법을 주지 않았느냐’고 말씀한다. 예수님은 율법이 모세를 통해서 유대들에게 전해졌다고 말씀한다. 모세는 80세가 되어서 하나님의 부르심을 받았다. 그는 하나님으로부터 애굽에 있는 이스라엘 백성을 약속의 땅인 가나안으로 인도하라는 명령을 받았다. 그래서 모세는 이스라엘을 인도하여 40년 동안 광야에서 생활했다. 모세는 시내산에 올라가서 40일을 금식하면서 두 돌판에 쓴 십계명을 받았다. 율법은 십계명을 포함하여 하나님이 주신 모든 교훈과 계명을 말한다. 예수님은 이렇게 모세가 준 율법을 유대인들이 받았다고 말하고 계신다.
그렇다면 하나님이 율법을 주신 이유는 무엇일까요. 물론 그것은 순종을 위한 것이다. 하나님이 선택하고 구별한 하나님의 백성인 유대인들은 하나님의 말씀을 지켜야 할 의무가 있었다. 만일 그들이 불순종하면 하나님 앞에서 죄가 되었다. 지금 예수님은 유대인들이 율법을 지키지 않고 있다고 책망하신다. 그들은 불순종의 죄를 짓고 있다. 그래서 예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도를 유대인들이 죽이려고 한다고 말씀한다. 이 말씀은 ‘살인하지 말라’는 계명을 지키지 않는다는 의미다. 살인은 오늘날도 도덕적으로 법적으로 큰 죄다. 그래서 하나님은 사람의 생명을 해치지 말라고 하셨다. 그런데 유대인들은 하나님이 보내신 아들, 그들을 구원하려고 오신 구주 그리스도를 죽이려고 한 것이다. 그들은 자신들이 율법을 잘 지킨다고 생각하면서 율법을 지키지 않고 있다. 그들은 자기 모순에 빠진 것이다. 우리도 자기 모순에 빠질 수 있다. 믿음 생활을 잘 한다고 생각하면서 믿음과 말씀에서 벗어나는 경우가 있다. 예배는 열심히 참석하면서 주의 말씀을 순종하지 않는 경우다.
유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 예수님이 귀신이 들렸다고 악한 말을 하고 있다(20절). 그들은 예수님을 죽이려고 하지 않는다고 주장한다. 하지만 예수님은 말씀한다. 예수님은 38년 된 병자를 안식일에 고쳐 주셨다. 유대인들은 그것을 이상하게 여겼다. 예수님은 모세가 유대인들에게 할례의 법을 제정했다고 말씀한다. 할례는 아브라함이 99세 때에 하나님이 만드셨다. 남자 아이가 태어나면 8일째 되는 날에 할례를 행했다. 유대인들은 태어난지 8일째 되는 날이 안식일이면 역시 할례를 안식일에 행했다. 그것은 사실상 안식일을 범하는 것이다. 안식일에는 어떠한 일도 해서는 안 되는 것이었다. 하지만 유대인들은 하나님의 법을 지키기 위해서 안식에도 할례를 행한 것이다.
예수님은 이렇게 유대인들이 율법을 지키기 위해서 안식일에도 할례를 행하는데, 하물며 예수님이 안식일에 병자를 치유한 것에 대해서 화를 내냐고 반문한다. 여기서 우리가 알아야 할 것이 있다. 예수님은 온 율법과 선지자는 하나님과 이웃을 사랑하는 것이라고 말씀하셨다(마 22:37-40). 하나님의 뜻을 따라서 안식일을 온전히 지키는 것은 이웃을 자신처럼 사랑하는 것이다. 예수님은 38년 동안 누워서 움직이지도 못하는 병자를 자신처럼 사랑하여 고쳐 주셨다. 예수님은 안식일을 온전히 준수하셨다. 유대인들은 예수님의 치유사역을 보고 하나님께 영광을 돌려야 했다. 그리고 그들은 예수님을 메시아로 믿어야 했다. 하지만 그들은 반대로 박해를 하고 있다. 이것이 불신앙의 비극이다. 예수님을 믿지 않으면 예수님의 대적자가 된다. 그래서 우리는 오직 믿음으로 살아야 한다. 그것이 주님이 원하시는 것이고 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 것이다. 그래서 우리에게는 온전한 신뢰가 필요하다.
예수님은 유대인들에게 단지 보이는 것으로 판단하지 말고 공의롭게 판단하라고 말씀한다. 이 말씀은 하나님의 말씀을 바르게 알고 바른 판단을 하라는 것이다. 주의 말씀을 잘 지키고 있는 사람에게 불순종한다고 하는 것은 바른 판단이 아니다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 모든 성경의 교훈의 핵심은 주 안에서 사랑이라는 것이다. 우리가 예수님처럼 사랑으로 행할 때에 성경을 잘 지키고 있는 것이다. 따라서 우리는 사랑을 실천하면서 온전한 믿음의 삶을 살아야 한다. 사랑이 없는 곳에는 불신앙과 불순종의 삶이 존재한다. 사랑은 예수님을 본받는 온전한 순종의 삶이다. 율법의 온전한 준수는 사랑이다. 그러므로 우리는 사랑으로 행해야 한다.
Observance of the Law (John 7:19-24)
People who are in haste speed over the limit when driving. When they think the car in front of them is going slowly, they get angry and vexed. However, the front car is going at the speed limit, obeying the law. The driver does not recognize that they are violating the traffic law. Today’s passage is about the Jews’ observance of the law. The Jews argue that Jesus is not observing the Sabbath. We can learn what the correct observance of the law is through the Bible.
Jesus asks in verse 19, “Has not Moses given you the law?” Jesus tells them that the law was given to the Jews through Moses. Moses received God’s calling at age 80. He received the command from God to lead out the Israelites who are in Egypt to Canaan, the promised land. So Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and in the wilderness for 40 years. Moses went up Mount Sinai and while fasting for 40 days, received the ten commandments in two tablets of stone. The Law refers to all the teachings and commands of God, including the ten commandments. And Jesus is saying that the Jews received the Law that Moses gave them.
Then what is the reason that God gave them the Law? Of course it is for obedience. As the people of God, the Jews who were chosen and distinguished had the obligation to obey the word of God. Their disobedience was a sin before God. Jesus does not think the Jews are obeying the Law and rebukes them. They are committing sin by disobeying. Therefore, Jesus says that the Jews are trying to kill Christ the Son of God. In other words, they are disobeying the law, “Do not murder.” Even today murder is a huge crime in terms of morality. Therefore, God says to not harm others’ lives. However, the Jews were trying to kill the Son Jesus Christ sent by God and who came to save us. They considered themselves obeying the Law well but actually were not. They were self-contradicting. This could happen to us as well. We may consider ourselves living by faith, when actually our life deviates from faith and the Word. For example, people may attend worship services but not obey the word of God.
When they heard Jesus, the Jews said that Jesus is demon possessed (v20). They claim that they are not trying to kill Jesus. Jesus healed a man paralyzed for 38 years on a Sabbath. The Jews thought that was going against the Law. Jesus tells them that Moses gave them the law of circumcision. God created circumcision when Abraham was 99 years old. When a boy was born, he was circumcised on the 8th day. The Jews circumcised their boys on the Sabbath if that was the 8th day. This was actually going against the Sabbath since you were not supposed to do any work on the Sabbath. However, in order to obey God’s law about circumcision, the Jews still perform circumcision on the Sabbath.
Jesus counters the Jews by asking why they are getting angry about Jesus healing the sick on the Sabbath when they perform circumcision on the Sabbath to keep the law. There is something we must note here. Jesus said that all the Law and the Prophets hang on to loving God and neighbors (Matthew 22:37-40). Observing the Sabbath according to God’s will is loving our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus loved a man who suffered paralysis for 38 years and healed him. Jesus observed the Sabbath completely. The Jews should have praised God when they saw Jesus’ ministry of healing. They should have believed in Jesus as the Messiah. However, they rather persecuted him. This is the tragedy of unbelief. When one does not believe in Jesus, they become an adversary. That is why we must live only by faith. This is what the Lord wants and this is what glorifies God. Thus, we must have perfect faith.
Jesus told the Jews not to judge by appearances but with justice. This means to understand God’s words correctly and make the right judgement. To claim that an obedient person is disobedient towards the Lord’s words is not a right judgement. We have to remember that the core of all the teachings of the Scriptures is love in the Lord. When we love like Jesus did, we are correctly following the Scriptures. We must live a life of complete faith by following the love of Christ. Where there is no love, there is a life of unbelief and disobedience. Love is a life of complete obedience that imitates Jesus. The complete observance of the law is love. Thus, we must act in love.
