루스드라에 걷지 못하는 사람이 있었다(행 14:8-18). 바울이 복음을 전하면서 그 사람이 믿음이 있는 것을 보고 ‘네 발로 바로 일어서라’(행 14:10)고 말했다. 그는 바로 일어섰다. 사람들은 그것을 보고 신들이 사람의 형상으로 내려 왔다고 하면서 소를 가지고 와서 제사를 드리려고 했다. 바울이 행한 이적을 보고 놀랬기 때문이다. 예수님은 수많은 기적을 행했다. 그것은 예수님이 참 그리스도라는 증거다.
예수님을 믿지 않고 대적하는 사람들이 예수님을 잡으려고 했다(30절). 하지만 예수님을 잡아가는 사람은 없었다. 그 이유는 예수님의 때가 아직 안 되었기 때문이다. 예수님은 자기의 때에 잡혀 가셔서 고난을 당하셨다. 예수님은 구주 사역을 하시면서 항상 박해와 고난에 직면했다. 오늘도 교회와 성도는 주님의 길을 따르면서 박해와 고난에 직면한다. 우리는 이것을 알고 믿음과 말씀으로 무장해야 한다. 우리는 대적과 맞서 싸워 이겨야 한다.
예수님의 때는 곧 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으시는 때를 말한다. 그 때는 오지 않았다. 때는 하나님이 정하신다. “범사에 기한이 있고 천하만사가 때가 있나니”(전 3:1). 예수님은 때와 시기는 하나님께 속해 있다고 말씀했다(행 1:7). 예수님이 십자가를 지시고 구속 사역을 완성하는 때가 있다. 우리의 삶도 마찬가지다. 모든 것은 하나님이 정하신 때를 따라서 이루어진다. 출애굽도 하나님이 정하신 때에 이루어졌다. 우리는 어떤 문제를 두고 속히 이루어지기를 바라면서 간절히 기도한다. 우리가 기억해야 할 것은 하나님이 정하신 때에 이루어진다는 사실이다. 그래서 우리는 기도하면서 믿음과 인내로 하나님의 때를 기다려야 한다.
많은 사람들은 예수님을 믿고 말했다. “그리스도께서 오실지라도 그 행하실 표적이 이 사람이 행한 것보다 더 많겠느냐”(31절). 예수님이 행하신 표적은 수없이 많았다. 예수님의 기적은 그것을 다 기록할 수 없을 정도다. 예수님은 그 기적을 통해서 자신이 그리스도임을 증명했다. 예수님은 그리스도요 성자 하나님으로서 능력과 기적을 행하셨다. 귀신을 쫓으시고, 수많은 병자를 고치시고, 물 위를 걸으시고, 바람과 바다를 잔잔하게 하시고, 물로 포도주를 만드시고, 죽은 자를 살리셨다. 이러한 능력과 기적은 예수님이 곧 메시야라는 것을 증거한다. 우리는 기적의 예수님을 구주 그리스도로 믿는다.
대제사장들과 바리새인들은 사람들의 말을 듣고 예수님을 잡으려고 아랫사람들을 보냈다(32절). 그들은 예수님이 그리스도라는 것을 믿었어야 했다. 하지만 그들은 믿지 않고 박해를 했다. 불신앙의 비극이 여기 있다. 예수님을 구주로 믿지 않으면 주님을 박해하고 해를 끼친다. 사도 바울의 경우가 그렇다. 우리가 예수님을 구주로 믿으면 주님을 기쁘시게 하고, 존귀하게 하고, 영화롭게 한다.
우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 오직 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 나가야 한다. 당시에 유대교 지도자들은 믿지 않았다. 그들은 예수님의 말씀을 전혀 이해하지 못했다. 예수님은 조금 더 있다가 자기를 보내신 하나님께 돌아 갈 것이라고 말했다(33절). 이 말씀은 하나님이 정하신 때가 되어서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으시고 부활하셔서 승천하실 것이란 의미다. 예수님은 성경대로 오시고, 성경대로 사시고, 성경대로 사역하시고, 성경대로 죽으시고, 성경대로 부활하셔서 하나님 아버지께로 가셨다. 예수님은 성경대로 다시 오실 것이다. 우리는 그 모든 사실을 믿음으로 받아들인다. 하지만 유대인들은 믿지 않았다.
예수님은 유대인들이 자기를 찾아도 만나지 못하고, 예수님이 계신 곳에 오지도 못할 것이라고 했다(34). 예수님이 이 세상을 떠나서 하늘로 올라 가시기 때문이다. 그래서 믿지 않는 유대인들은 예수님을 만나지도 못하고 예수님이 계신 곳에 오지 못한다. 우리가 예수님을 믿을 때에 예수님을 만날 수 있고 주님이 계신 곳 곧 천국에 갈 수 있다. 유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 전혀 이해하지 못했다(35-36). 그들은 예수님이 헬라인들에게 가서 그들을 가르칠 것으로 생각했다(35절). 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리가 예수님과 성경을 배우고 이해하기 위해서는 믿어야 한다는 것이다. 믿음이 없는 곳에는 무지가 있다. 예수님과 성경 그리고 구원에 관한 참 지식은 믿음으로 얻는다. 그래서 우리는 믿음으로 살고, 믿음으로 성경을 읽고, 믿음으로 주를 섬겨야 한다. 믿음은 구원의 통로요, 예수님을 아는 지름길이요, 천국으로 가는 길이다.
Jesus of Miracles (John 7:30-36)
In Lystra, there was a man who was lame from birth (Acts 14:8-18). As Paul was evangelizing, he noticed that this man had faith and said, “Get up on your feet” (Acts 14:10). He got up immediately. When people saw this, they said that a god has come to the earth as a man and brought a bull to sacrifice. They were surprised to see the miracle Paul performed. Jesus performed numerous miracles. These miracles testify that Jesus is the true Christ.
Those who did not believe in Jesus tried to arrest him (v30). However, no one laid a hand on him. This was because Jesus’ time had not yet come. When the time had come, Jesus was arrested and persecuted. During his ministry as the Savior, Jesus was constantly met with persecutions and hardships. Even today, the church and Christians confront persecution and hardship as we follow the way of the Lord. Knowing this, we must arm ourselves with faith and the Word. We must face our adversaries and defeat them.
Jesus’ time refers to the time he is crucified. That time had not yet come. God determines the time. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Jesus says that the times and dates are set by God (Acts 1:7). There is time for Jesus to be crucified and complete the ministry of salvation. Same goes with our lives. Everything happens according to God’s time. Exodus happened at the time God had planned. When there is a problem we face, we pray that it will be resolved as soon as possible. However, we must remember that everything happens according to God’s time. That is why we must wait patiently for God’s time.
Many people believed in Jesus and said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?” (v31). The miracles Jesus performed were countless. They could not be all recorded. Through these miracles, Jesus proved that he is the Christ. As the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus performed powers and miracles. He drove out demons, healed diseases, walked on water, calmed the wind and the sea, turned water into wine, and raised the dead to life. These powers and miracles testify that Jesus is the Messiah. We believe in Jesus of miracles as the Lord Christ.
The chief priests and Pharisees heard what people were saying and sent temple guards to arrest him (v32). They had to believe that Jesus was the Christ. However, they did not believe and instead, persecuted him. Here is the tragedy of unbelief. When one does not believe in Jesus as the Savior, they persecute and inflict harm. This was the case for Apostle Paul in his earlier days. When we believe in Jesus as our Savior, we please, honor, and glorify him.
We must remember that we must believe only in the Lord Jesus Christ. The contemporary Jewish leaders did not believe. They did not understand the words of Jesus. Jesus says that he will return to God who sent him after a little while (v33). This refers to the time set by God, after he dies on the cross, resurrects, and ascends to heaven. Jesus came to the world, lived, ministered, died, and resurrected according to the Scriptures and returned to the Father. And he will come back according to the Scriptures. We accept all this with faith. However, the Jews did not believe.
Jesus says that although the Jews look for him, they will not find him nor can they come to where he is (v34). For Jesus was leaving the world and going to heaven. Therefore, the Jews who do not believe cannot see Jesus or come to where he is. It is when we believe that we can see Jesus and go to heaven where Jesus lives. The Jews did not understand Jesus (v35-36). They thought Jesus was going to go teach the Greeks (v35). We must remember that in order to learn Jesus and the Scriptures, we must believe. Where there is no faith, there is ignorance. The true knowledge of Jesus, the Scriptures and salvation can be obtained through faith. Thus, we must live, read the Bible, and serve the Lord with faith. Faith is the path to salvation, the shortcut to knowing Jesus, and the way to heaven.
