아담이 불순종하여 죄를 지었다. 그는 선악을 알게 하는 열매를 따 먹지 말라는 하나님의 말씀을 순종하지 않았다. 아담은 그 죄로 인해서 죽게 되었다. 그리고 그의 후손인 모든 사람도 죽는다. 죽음은 죄를 증명한다. 이 세상에 죄 없는 사람은 없다. 오늘 본문 성경은 간음하다가 잡힌 여자에 관한 기사이다. 예수님이 이 사건을 통해서 주는 생명의 교훈은 무엇인가?
예수님은 감람산에서 밤을 보내시고 아침에는 예루살렘 성전에서 사람들을 가르쳤다. 사람들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣기 위해서 성전에 모였다. 주님은 그들에게 하나님 나라의 복음을 전하셨다. 그 때에 바리새인과 서기관들이 음행 중에 잡힌 여자를 가운데 세웠다(3). 음행은 육체적 음행과 영적인 음행이 있다. 육체의 음행은 하나님의 성전인 몸을 더럽히는 것이다. 그것은 자기 몸에 죄를 짓는 것이다. 영적인 음행은 하나님보다 더 사랑하는 것이다. 마음에 욕망과 탐심을 가지고 그것을 좋아하고 사랑하는 것이 영적 음행이다. 주님과 말씀보다 돈, 재물, 부, 명예, 권세, 인기, 쾌락을 추구하는 것이 영적 음행이다. 본문은 육체적 음행에 관한 것이다.
서기관과 바리새인들은 한 여자를 데리고 와서 예수님께 묻는다. ‘선생님 이 여자가 간음하다가 현장에서 잡혔나이다 모세는 율법에 이러한 여자를 돌로 치라고 명령했습니다. 선생은 어떻게 말하겠나이까’(4-5). 우리는 간음에 관한 율법을 이해하는 것이 필요하다. 하나님은 모세의 율법을 통해서 간음은 사형에 해당한다고 말씀하셨다(레 20:10; 신 22:22, 24). 간음 죄는 죽음의 형벌을 받게 된다. 모세는 간음을 한 사람들은 돌로 치라고 명했다. 모세의 율법에 따르면 이 여자는 돌에 맞아 죽게 된다.
하지만 우리는 기억해야 한다. 모세의 율법을 가장 정확하고 확실하게 아시는 분은 예수님이시다. 율법은 그림자요 예표다. 그림자인 율법의 실체는 예수님이시다. 그림자는 실체에 의해서 생긴다. 그림자가 먼저 있지 않다. 실체인 예수님이 먼저 계시고 그림자인 율법이 있다. 율법보다 실체인 예수님이 완전하고 모든 성경의 본질이다. 따라서 율법을 포함한 모든 성경은 온전한 실체인 예수 그리스도를 통해서 해석되고 이해되어야 한다. 온전하신 예수님은 모든 일을 사랑으로 행하셨다. 그리고 사랑은 율법의 완성이다(롬 13:8-10). 사랑이 없이는 율법은 완성되지 못한다. 율법 자체만으로는 온전하지 않다. 하나님의 사랑, 그리스도의 사랑은 율법을 완성했다. 이 여자는 율법으로는 죽을 수 밖에 없다. 하지만 율법의 완성인 사랑으로는 속죄의 은총과 함께 살 수 있다. 이 여자는 죽느냐, 사느냐의 갈림 길에 서 있다.
바리새인과 서기관들의 질문은 예수님을 고발하기 위해서 시험한 것이다. 하나님을 시험하는 것은 죄다(신 6:16). 그들은 예수님을 시험함으로써 죄를 짓고 있다. 그들의 불신앙은 예수님을 시험하는 죄를 짓게 했다. 예수님은 그들의 질문에 대답하기 전에 엎드려서 손가락으로 땅에 쓰셨다(6). 성경은 주님이 무엇을 썼는지 말하지 않는다. 그들은 계속해서 예수님께 물었다. 예수님은 일어나셔서 말씀하셨다. “너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 돌로 치라”(7). 예수님은 죄가 없는 가자 돌로 치라고 말씀했다.
성경은 말한다. “의인은 없나니 하나도 없다”(롬 3:10). 예수님의 말씀은 모든 사람은 죄인이라는 뜻이다. 간음한 여자만 죄가 있는 것이 아니다. 이 여자를 고발하는 사람들도 죄가 있다. 죄인이 죄인을 정죄하고 심판할 수 없다. 죄인은 의의 심판장이신 주님에 의해서 형벌을 받게 된다. 죄 없으신 예수님 외에는 사람을 정죄할 수 없다. 따라서 사람들은 이 여자를 돌로 칠 수 없다. 왜냐하면 자기들도 하나님 앞에서 죄인이기 때문이다.
예수님은 다시 엎드려서 땅에 쓰셨다(8). 이것을 보고서 사람들은 양심에 가책을 느끼고 모두 떠나갔다. 예수님은 여자에게 말씀하셨다. “너를 고발하고 정죄하는 자들이 없느냐”(9). 간음한 여자가 없다고 대답을 했다. 그리고 예수님은 “나도 너를 정죄하지 않는다. 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라”(11)고 했다. 예수님은 세상을 정죄하고 심판하려고 오시지 않고 구원하려 오셨다(요 12:47). 율법은 정죄했지만 예수님은 용서했다. 하나님의 사랑으로 오신 예수님은 우리를 정죄하지 않으시고 용서하셨다. 주님은 하나님의 사랑으로 우리 죄를 사하시고 구원하셨다. 예수님은 속죄의 권능을 가지고 계신다. 주님은 믿는 자에게 긍휼과 자비를 베푸셔서 죄를 용서한다. 율법을 성취하신 예수님은 자신이 우리 죄를 짊어 지셨다. 주님은 십자가의 피로 우리 죄를 씻으셨다. 우리는 십자가의 주님을 통해서 베풀어 주신 하나님의 사랑으로 구원을 받는다. 이것이 은혜의 복음이다.
하나님의 사랑과 은혜로 죄와 사망에서 구원 받은 우리는 죄된 삶을 살아서 안된다. 죄는 십자가의 주님을 욕되게 하고 우리를 파멸로 인도한다. 예수님의 십자가의 피로 죄에서 깨끗하게 된 우리는 거룩한 삶을 살아야 한다. 그것이 주 예수 그리스도 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에 보답하는 삶이다. 거룩함은 하나님의 뜻이요 복음에 합당한 삶이다. 십자가의 복음을 통해서 속죄의 은총을 입은 우리는 죄를 멀리하고 몸과 마음을 다 거룩하게 해야 한다.
One Without Sin (John 8:1-7)
Adam disobeyed and sinned. He disobeyed God’s command to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And Adam died because of his sin. Moreover, his descendants also died. Death proves sin. There is no one in this world who is without sin. Today’s passage is about a woman who was caught in adultery. What is Jesus’ teaching through this incident?
Jesus spent the night at the Mount of Olives and in the morning, taught the people in the temple in Jerusalem. Jesus preached the kingdom of God. Then, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law brought in a woman who was caught in adultery and made her stand before the group (v3). There are two types of adultery: that of the flesh and that of the spirit. Adultery of the flesh defiles our body, which is God’s temple. This is sinning in our body. Adultery of the spirit is loving something more than God. It is enjoying and loving the earthly desires and greed. It is pursuing money, possessions, wealth, reputation, power, fame, and pleasure more than the Lord and his Word. Today’s passage is about adultery of the flesh.
The Pharisees and the teachers of the law brought a woman and asked Jesus a question: “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” (v4-5). Now we need to understand the Law in regard to adultery. God said through the Law of Moses that adultery is punishable by death (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22, 24). The sin of adultery receives a death penalty. Moses commanded that people who commit adultery be stoned to death. According to the Law of Moses, the woman should be stoned to death.
However, we must remember: the One who knows the Law of Moses most accurately and surely is Jesus. The Law is the shadow and symbol. The reality of the law (that is, the shadow) is Jesus. Shadow exists through the thing that exists in reality. Shadow does not exist first. The reality, Jesus, exists first and then the Law, or the shadow. Jesus, who is the reality, is perfect and the essence of all Scriptures. Therefore, the entire Scriptures, including the Law, must be interpreted and understood from Jesus Christ, who is the perfect reality. Jesus did all things in love. And love is the fulfillment of the Law (Romans 13:8-10). Without love, the Law cannot be fulfilled. The Law itself cannot be perfect. The love of God, that of Christ fulfilled the Law. The woman had to die according to the Law. However, she is able to live under the grace of the forgiveness of sins through love, which is the fulfillment of the Law. Now the woman was in a life or death situation.
The Pharisees and the teachers of the law asked Jesus the question in order to trap him and have a basis for accusing him. Testing God is a sin (Deuteronomy 6:16). They are sinning by testing Jesus. Their unbelief led them to commit the sin of testing Jesus. Before answering them, Jesus got down and wrote on the ground (v6). The Bible does not say what he wrote. They kept questioning Jesus. He got up and said, “Let any of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (v7). Jesus told them that anyone who is without sin should stone the woman.
The Bible says, “There is no one righteous, not even one” (Romans 3:10). Jesus meant that everyone is a sinner. It is not just the woman who was caught in adultery who has sin. The people who are accusing her also have sin. Sinners cannot condemn or judge another sinner. Sinners are punished by the Lord, who is the Righteous Judge. Aside from Jesus who is without sin, no one can condemn a person. Therefore, these people cannot stone the woman. For they are also sinners before God.
Jesus got down again and wrote on the ground with his finger (v8). The people who heard this were conscious-stricken and began to leave. Jesus asked the woman, “Has no one condemned you?” (v9). The woman answered, and Jesus said, “Then neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin” (v11). Jesus came to the world not to condemn and judge but to save (John 12:47). The Law condemned but Jesus forgave. Jesus who came by God’s love did not condemn us but forgave us. Jesus forgave us our sins and saved us through the love of God. Jesus has the power to forgive sins. And he shows mercy and compassion to those who believe, and forgives their sins. Jesus who fulfilled the Law bore our sins for us. He cleansed our sins away through the blood of the cross. We are saved through God’s love that he poured out on us through Jesus of the cross. This is the gospel of grace.
We who have been delivered from sin and death through God’s love and grace must no longer live a sinful life. Sin dishonors the Lord of the cross and leads us to destruction. We who have become sanctified through the blood of Jesus’ cross must live a holy life. This is the kind of life that makes up for the love of God that is in Jesus Christ our Lord. Holiness is God’s will and the life that aligns with the gospel. We who received the grace of the forgiveness of sin through the gospel of the cross must leave sin and sanctify our body and mind.
