어떤 사람을 아는 것은 두 가지 방법이 있다. 하나는 그 자신이 알려 주는 것이고, 다른 하나는 다른 사람이 알려 주는 것이다. 우리가 처음 만난 사람을 알 수 없다. 그 사람을 아는 길은 자신과 그 사람을 아는 사람이 말해 줄 때 알 수 있다. 우리가 예수님을 어떻게 알 수 있는가? 첫째는 하나님이 예수님에 대해서 알려 줄 때 안다. 또한 우리는 예수님이 자신에 대해서 알려 줄 때에 알 수 있다. 그리고 우리는 선지자들과 사도들이 알려 줄 때에 안다. 오늘 본문은 예수님이 어떤 분인지를 알려 준다.
먼저 우리는 하나님께서 예수님에 대해서 알려 주는 것을 본다. 하나님은 구약의 선지자들을 통해서 예수님을 알려 주셨다. 구약은 예수님을 싹과 가지로 묘사한다(사 11:1-5). 예수님은 이새의 줄기에서 나오는 싹이요 그 뿌리에서 나오는 가지다. 그 싹과 가지는 결실 할 것이다. 또한 성경은 예수님이 아브라함과 다윗의 후손으로 오신다고 말한다(창 22:18; 삼하 7:12-13; 마 1:1-17). 예수님은 선지자(신 18:15), 대제사장(시 110:4), 목자(시 23:1-6; 겔 34장), 하나님의 아들(시 2:7-8; 요 3:1-7), 하나님의 종(사 42:-9; 사 53장), 성령의 사람(사 61:1-3), 기묘자, 모사, 전능하신 하나님, 평강의 왕(사 9:6), 메시야(사 9:6; 미가 5:2; 슥 9:9; 사 53장), 만민의 인도자와 명령자(사 55:4) 등이다.
신약에서는 예수님을 어떻게 말하는가? 예수님은 구원자, 하나님의 아들(마 27:54; 요 3:17), 의인(눅 23:47), 구주 그리스도 주(마 1:21; 눅 2:11; 요 4:42), 길, 진리, 생명(요 14:6; 골 3:4), 부활(요 11:25), 심판장(행 10:42; 롬 14:10-12), 말씀(요 1:1, 14), 선한 목자(요 10:11, 14), 의로움과 거룩함(고전 1:30), 하나님의 능력과 지혜(고전 1:24), 하나님의 어린양(요 1:29, 36), 대제사장(히 5:6), 만왕의 왕과 만주의 주(계 19:11-21), 처음과 마지막(계 2:8), 교회의 머리(엡 1:22; 엡 5:23), 충성된 증인(계 1:5) 등이다.
오늘 성경은 예수님을 세상의 빛으로 묘사한다. 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도께서 세상에 오셨다. 성부 하나님은 성경의 약속대로 예수님을 세상에 보내셨다. 세상에 오신 예수님은 세상의 빛이시다. 예수님이 오시기 전에는 세상에 빛이 없었다. 세상은 어두움 속에 있었다. 예수님은 어두운 세상에 빛을 비추셨다. 예수님이 없는 삶은 어두움 속에 있다. 세상은 무엇인가? 세상은 빛이 되신 예수님과 반대편에 있다. 세상은 죄에 속해 있다. 세상은 죄의 권세 아래서 죄의 종으로 살아 간다. 세상은 악하다. 예수님은 세상을 ‘악하고 음란하다’(마 12: 39)고 말씀한다. 세상은 악한 자에게 속해 있다(갈 1:4; 요일 5:19). 세상에는 선한 것이 없다. 세상은 사망에 속해 있다. 세상은 죄와 사망의 어둠 속에 있다. 세상은 더러움으로 가득차 있다. 세상은 거룩하고 깨끗한 것이 없다. 이 어둠의 세상에 빛을 비추셨다. 그 분이 하나님의 아들 예수님이시다.
빛은 생명을 말한다. 예수님은 세상에 생명으로 오셨다. 죽음의 세상에 생명의 빛이 비추었다. 예수님은 죽음의 권세를 이기시고 생명의 부활을 하셨다. 빛은 의를 가리킨다(엡 5:9). 예수님은 죄를 없애고 의를 가져 오셨다. 죄의 권세는 빛되신 예수님의 십자가의 피로 파괴된다. 의의 예수님은 우리를 죄에서 자유케 한다. 빛은 선함을 가리킨다. 하나님은 선하시다(시 136:1; 마 19:17). 하나님의 선하심이 빛의 예수 그리스도를 통해서 세상에 나타났다. 주님은 악한 세상에 선한 빛을 비추셨다. 우리는 주 예수를 믿음으로 선한 빛 가운데 산다. 선한 빛이신 예수님 안에서 우리는 세상의 빛이다(마 5:14-16).
빛은 진실함을 가리킨다(엡 5:9). 예수님은 어두운 세상의 모든 거짓을 몰아내고 진실을 가져 오셨다. 빛이 되신 예수님을 통해서 세상은 진실하게 된다. 진실한 삶은 그리스도를 믿음으로 주어진다. 빛은 거룩함을 나타낸다. 예수님이 없으면 세상에 거룩함이 없다. 우리가 거룩하게 되는 길은 빛의 주님을 믿음으로 가능하다. 빛은 구원을 나타낸다. 예수님은 멸망의 세상에 구원을 가져 오셨다. 예수님은 미련한 세상에 지혜의 빛을 비추셨다. 그리스도는 믿는 자에게 하나님의 지혜가 된다. 우리는 예수님을 믿음으로 세상의 어두움에서 벗어나 생명의 빛 가운데 산다. 우리는 빛되신 예수님을 믿음으로 순종해야 한다. 그러면 우리는 어두움에 속해 있지 않고 낮에 속한다(살전 5:5). 우리는 빛되신 주님 안에서 어둠이 없는 생명 가운데 행하게 된다. 우리는 생명의 빛을 비추신 주님께 감사하며 빛의 사명을 다하자.
The Light of the World (John 8:12)
There are two ways to know a person. One way is for the person to tell us about himself, and another way is for others to tell us about him. We cannot know about someone whom we met for the first time. We know about them when they introduce and talk about themselves or when others tell us about them. Then how can we know about Jesus? First, we are able to know when God tells us about him. Second, we get to know when Jesus tells us about himself. Moreover, we are able to know about Jesus when the prophets and apostles tell us about him. Today’s passage tells us who Jesus is.
First, God tells us about Jesus. God tells us about him through the prophets in the Old Testament. The Old Testament describes Jesus as a shoot and a Branch (Isaiah 11:1-5). Jesus is a shoot that comes up from the stump of Jesse, a Branch from his roots. The shoot and the Branch will bear fruit. Moreover, the Scriptures say that Jesus will come as the descendant of Abraham and David (Genesis 22:18; 2 Samuel 7:12-13; Matthew 1:1-17). Jesus is the Prophet (Deuteronomy 18:15), the High Priest (Psalms 110:14), the Shepherd (Psalms 23:1-6; Ezekiel 34), the Son of God (Psalms 2:7-8; John 3:1-7), the Servant of God (Isaiah 42:9; Isaiah 53), Man of the Spirit (Isaiah 61:1-3), Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), the Messiah (Isaiah 9:6; Micah 5:2; Zechariah 9:9; Isaiah 53), a ruler and commander of the peoples (Isaiah 55:4), etc.
What does the New Testament say about Jesus? Jesus is the Savior, the Son of God (Matthew 27:54; John 3:17), the Righteous One (Luke 23:47), Jesus Christ the Savior (Matthew 1:21; Luke 2:11; John 4:42), the Way, the Truth, the Life (John 14:6; Colossians 3:4), the Resurrection (John 11:25), the Judge (Acts 10:42; Romans 14:10-12), the Word (John 1:1, 14), the Good Shepherd (John 10:11, 14), the righteous and holiness (1 Corinthians 1:30), the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24), the lamb of God (John 1:29l 36), the High Priest (Hebrews 5:6), the King of kings and the Lord of lords (Revelations 19:11-21), the First and the Last (Revelations 2:8), the head of the church (Ephesians 1:22; Ephesians 5:23), the faithful witness (Revelations 1:5), etc.
Today’s passage describes Jesus as the light of the world. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to the world. God the Father sent Jesus to the world according to the promise he made in the Scripture. Jesus, who came to the world, is the light of the world. Before Jesus came, there was no light in the world. The world was in darkness. Jesus shone the light in the world of darkness. Life without Jesus is in darkness. What is the world? The world is on the other side of Jesus, who is the light. The world is of sin. It lives as the slave of sin, under the power of sin. The world is evil. Jesus said the world is “wicked and adulterous” (Matthew 12:39). The world is under the control of the evil one (Galatians 1:4; 1 John 5:19). There is no good in this world. The world is under the control of death. It is of sin, death, and darkness. It is full of filth. There is no holiness or purity in it. Jesus shone the light in this world of darkness. He is Jesus, the Son of God.
The light refers to life. Jesus came to the world as life. He shone the light of life in this world of death. Jesus overcame the power of death and was raised to life. The light also refers to righteousness (Ephesians 5:9). Jesus removed sin and brought righteousness. The power of sin is destroyed through the blood of the cross of Jesus the Light. The Jesus of righteousness freed us from sin. The light refers to goodness. God is good (Psalms 136:1; Matthew 19:17). God’s light of goodness was revealed in the world through Jesus Christ. Jesus shone the light of goodness in the world of wickedness. We live in the light of goodness through faith in Jesus our Lord. We are the light of the world in Jesus, the light of goodness (Matthew 5:14-16).
The light refers to the truth (Ephesians 5:9). Jesus drove away all deceitfulness in the world of darkness and brought truth. The world becomes truthful through Jesus the Light. Truthful life is granted through faith in Christ. Light displays holiness. Without Jesus, there is no holiness in the world. The way to become holy is by believing in the Lord of light. The light reveals salvation. Jesus brought salvation to the world of destruction. He shone the light of wisdom in the world of ignorance. Christ becomes the wisdom of God to those who believe. We live in the light of life, being freed from the world of darkness. We must obey Jesus the Light through faith. Then we are no longer under the power of darkness but of light (1 Thessalonians 5:5). We live in life in the Lord of light, where there is no darkness. Let us give thanks to God for shining on us the life of life and fulfill our calling as the light of the world.
