사람들이 어떤 사람의 자녀를 보면서 붕어빵이라고 한다. 그 자녀가 부모와 너무 닮았기 때문이다. 자녀는 부모의 외모, 성격, 기질 등을 닮는다. 어떤 사람의 부모를 아는 방법은 부모 자신과 그 자녀를 통해서 알 수 있다. 오늘 본문은 우리가 하나님 아버지를 아는 방법을 알려 준다.
예수님의 말씀을 들은 바리새인들이 예수님께 묻는다. 예수님은 바로 앞에서 예수님 자신의 증거가 참됨을 말씀하셨다. 예수님의 증거는 두 증인 곧 자신과 하나님 아버지의 증거이기 때문이다. 바리새인들은 예수님의 아버지가 누구냐고 질문한다. 예수님의 아버지에 대해 알려고 하는 것은 옳다. 하지만 그 질문이 악의적이고 부정적이라면 적절하지 못하다. 사실 우리는 하나님과 예수님에 대해서 많이 알지 못한다. 그래서 우리는 많은 궁금증을 갖고 있다. 우리는 알기 위해서 질문하고, 연구하고, 노력한다. 믿음이 무엇인지, 예수님은 어떤 분인지, 하나님은 어떤 분인지, 그리고 성령에 대해서 알기를 원한다. 우리는 또한 성경과 바른 그리스도인의 삶이 무엇인지를 알기 원한다. 우리는 알기 위해서 성경을 읽고 배우고 순종해야 한다.
바리새인들은 ‘네 아버지가 어디 있느냐’고 예수님께 묻는다. 하나님의 창조의 섭리에 따라서 모든 사람은 아버지가 있다. 아버지 없이 태어나는 사람은 없다. 오늘 나는 아버지에 의해서 태어나 존재한다. 아버지는 나를 낳고, 돌보고, 양육한다. 우리는 아버지의 사랑과 은혜를 입고 자란다. 그래서 성경은 “네 부모를 공경하라”(엡 6:2)고 한다. 우리는 주 안에서 하나님의 명령에 순종하여 아버지를 공경해야 한다. 그것은 자녀의 본분이요 옳은 일이다.
그렇다면 예수님의 아버지는 어디 계실까요. 예수님의 아버지는 두 분으로 이해할 수 있다. 그것은 길러준 아버지 요셉과 하늘에 계신 하나님 아버지다. 그것은 인간적인 의미에서의 아버지와 신적인 의미의 아버지다. 한 아버지는 땅에 있고, 한 아버지는 하늘에 있다. 하나님을 아버지로 부르는 우리도 마찬가지다. 땅에 계신 아버지와 하늘에 계신 아버지(주기도)가 있다. 땅의 아버지는 피조물이고 하늘 아버지는 창조주이시다. 땅의 아버지는 시간적인 존재이고 하늘 아버지는 영원한 존재이다. 우리는 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님의 자녀가 되어 하나님을 아버지로 모신다. 예수님의 아버지가 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지다.
예수님은 바리새인들의 ‘네 아버지가 어디 있느냐’는 질문에 대답하신다. “너희는 나를 알지 못하고 내 아버지도 알지 못한다. 나를 알았더라면 내 아버지도 알았을 것이다” 예수님 말씀에 하나님 곧 예수님의 아버지를 아는 비결이 있다. 우리가 예수님의 아버지를 알기 위해서는 먼저 성자 예수님을 알아야 한다. 우리가 하나님이 보내신 독생자 예수님을 알 때에 하나님을 알게 된다. 성경은 말한다. “너희가 나를 알았더라면 내 아버지도 알았으리라”(요 14:7). 예수님 말씀은 사람이 예수님을 알면 예수님의 아버지도 알 수 있다는 뜻이다. 우리가 예수님을 알지 못하면 결국 하나님 아버지도 알지 못한다. 우리는 성자 예수님 없이는 하나님을 알 수 없다. 예수님을 믿지 않고 하나님을 안다고 하는 것은 거짓이다.
바리새인들은 예수님을 믿지 않았다. 그래서 그들은 예수님을 알지 못했다. 그 결과 그들은 하나님도 알지 못했다. 그들이 하나님을 알려면 반드시 하나님이 보내신 예수님을 알아야 한다. 예수님은 “나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았다”(요 14:9)고 말씀하신다. 예수님은 하나님을 보여 주셨다. 하나님을 보는 길은 예수님을 보는 것이다. 예수님은 하나님을 알고 볼 수 있는 통로이다. 하나님을 많이 그리고 확실하게 알기 위해서는 예수님을 많이 알고 확실하게 알아야 한다.
바리새인들은 예수님이 하나님의 아들 그리스도임을 알지 못했다. 그들은 예수님을 믿지 않고 불순종했기 때문이다. 그들은 예수님을 알지 못한 결과 예수님을 보내신 하나님도 알지 못했다.
바리새인들은 구약성경에서 말하는 하나님을 안다고 주장했다. 하지만 그들은 그 성경이 말하고 전하는 예수님을 알지 못했다. 그 결과 그들은 하나님도 알지 못했다. 우리가 하나님을 아는 길은 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이다. 우리가 하나님을 잘 알기 위해서는 예수님을 잘 알아야 한다. 우리가 예수님을 잘 알기 위해서는 성경을 읽고 배우고 순종해야 한다. 거기에 하나님과 예수님을 아는 길이 있다. 예수님과 하나님을 알고 이해하면서 영생과 함께 하나님 아버지께서 주 예수 그리스도 안에서 주시는 모든 은혜와 복을 누리며 살기를 주님의 이름으로 기원한다.
The Way to Know God (John 8:19)
When children resemble their parents, we describe them as a chip off the old block. Children take after their parents’ appearance, personality, tendencies, among other traits. We can know what kind of people someone’s parents are by looking at the parents or that person. Today’s passage teaches us the way to know God the Father.
The Pharisees who heard Jesus kept questioning him. Jesus had explained to them that his testimony is true because his testimony is supported by two witnesses, that is, himself and the Father. The Pharisees asked Jesus who his father was. It is good for them to have the curiosity to know about Jesus’ father. However, if the intent is malicious and negative, then it is not proper. We do not know a lot about God and Jesus, so we are curious. We question, investigate, and make effort to know more about them. We desire to know what faith is, who Jesus is, who God is as well as the Holy Spirit. We also want to know the Scriptures and what the proper life of a Christian is. To know these, we must read, learn, and obey the Bible.
The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Where is your father?” According to God’s providence of creation, all people have a father. There is no person who is born without a father. We are born and exist today through our father. Our fathers give us birth, care for, and raise us.
We are raised through our father’s love and care. Therefore, the Bible says “Honor your father and mother” (Ephesians 6:2). So we ought to honor our father in obedience to God’s command. This is the children’s duty and right before God.
Then where is Jesus’ father? He has two fathers: Joseph who raised him on this earth and God the Father who is in heaven. That is, Joseph is his earthly father and God is his heavenly Father. One father is on earth and the other Father is in heaven. Same applies to us who call God our Father. We have a father on this earth and a Father in heaven (the Lord’s prayer). The earthly father is God’s creation and our heavenly Father is the Creator. The earthly father is bound by time whereas our heavenly Father is eternal. We become God’s children by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ and serve him as our Father. Jesus’ Father is our Father in heaven.
Jesus answers the Pharisees’ question, “Where is your father?” He says, “You do not know me or my father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also” (v19). In Jesus’ word is the key to knowing his Father. To know Jesus’ Father, we must first know Jesus the Son. We are able to know God when we know God’s only Son Jesus whom he sent to the world. The Bible says, “If you had known me, you would have known my Father also” (John 14:7). In other words, when we know Jesus, we would know his Father as well. And when we do not know Jesus, we would not know the Father as well. We cannot know God without knowing Jesus the Son. Claiming that we know God without believing in Jesus is a falsehood.
The Pharisees did not believe in Jesus. So they did not know him. As a result, they did not know God. For them to know God, they must believe in Jesus whom God sent. Jesus says, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Jesus showed us who God is. The way to see God is to see Jesus. He is the path to knowing and seeing God. To know with certainty and in-depth about God, we must know Jesus deeply and certainly. The Pharisees did not know that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God. For they did not believe in him and thus disobeyed. As a result of not knowing Jesus, they did not know God.
The Pharisees claim that they know God based on the Old Testament. However, they failed to know Jesus whom the Scripture was about. Consequently, they did not know God. The way to know God is to know God’s Son, Jesus Christ. For us to know God well, we must know Jesus well. To know Jesus well, we must read and learn the Bible and obey it. That is the way to know God and Jesus. I pray in the name of the Lord that you will know and understand God and Jesus and enjoy all the grace and blessings, along with eternal life, that our Father gives in the Lord Jesus Christ.
