스데반이 유대인들에게 주의 복음을 전했다. 하지만 유대인들은 듣기를 거부하고 그를 죽였다. 예수님 말씀을 듣고 받는 사람과 받지 받는 사람이 있었다. 지금도 마찬가지다. 본문은 예수님 말씀을 듣고도 받지 않는 사람들에 관한 것이다.
예수님은 37절에서 유대인들에게 말씀한다. 예수님은 그들이 혈통상으로 아브라함의 자손이라고 인정한다. 예수님은 아브라함의 자손인 유대인들이 자기를 죽이려고 한다고 말씀한다. 그 이유는 무엇일까요? 예수님은 유대인들 안에 예수님의 말씀이 없기 때문이라고 한다. 그들은 예수님 말씀을 거부하고 받아들이지 않았다. 이것은 심각한 문제다. 예수님의 말씀은 사람의 말이 아니다. 예수님 말씀은 전능한 말씀이다. 예수님 말씀은 생명, 구원, 거룩, 진실, 정직, 의로움, 순수함, 정결, 확실성이 있는 영원한 말씀이다. 주의 말씀을 받는 것은 가장 귀하고 복되고 필연적인 일이다. 예수님의 말씀을 받지 않는 것은 죄요 파멸을 낳는다. 우리는 예수님 말씀을 마음으로부터 사모하며 받아야 한다.
유대인들은 주의 말씀을 받지 않았다. 그들은 믿지 않았고 순종하지 않았다. 그 결과 그들은 예수님을 죽이려고 한다. 그들은 율법을 지키지 않는 것이다. 이렇게 불신앙은 자신의 파멸을 초래하는 무서운 범죄의 결과를 낳는다. 하지만 주의 말씀을 받는 사람은 믿음으로 순종한다. 주님이 주시는 성령으로 말씀을 행한다. 그래서 주님이 주시는 은총과 복을 누리며 주를 기쁘시게 하며 영화롭게 한다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 마음에 간직하며 실천해야 한다.
예수님은 하나님 아버지에게서 본 것을 말씀하신다(38). 예수님은 듣지도 보지도 못한 일을 말하지 않는다. 예수님은 아버지 하나님이 하신 일을 다 보셨다. 예수님은 성부와 항상 함께 계시면서 창조로부터 모든 일을 지켜 보셨다. 예수님은 아버지가 하시는 일을 보고 말씀하신다. 예수님은 유대인들 자기 아버지에게서 들은 것을 행한다고 말한다. 그들은 자기 아버지에게 들은대로 예수님을 죽이려고 한다. 유대인들은 아브라함이 자기 아버지라고 말한다(39). 하지만 예수님은 그들이 아브라함처럼 행하지 않는다고 말한다.
예수님은 유대인들에게 아브라함이 아닌 다른 아버지가 있다는 의미로 말씀한다. 예수님은 유대인들이 신앙적이고 영적인 의미에서 아브라함의 자손이 아니라는 것이다. 왜냐하면 그들은 아브라함처럼 행하지 않았기 때문이다. 자녀는 아버지를 닮는다. 예수님은 아버지 하나님을 본받아서 그대로 행하신다. 유대인들이 아브라함의 자손이면 아브라함처럼 행해야 한다. 아브라함은 예수님의 때를 보는 것을 즐거워 했다(56). 하지만 아브라함의 자손들이라고 주장하는 유대인들은 예수님을 미워하고 박해했다. 그들은 아버지라고 주장하는 아브라함을 전혀 닮지 않았다.
유대인들은 하나님 아버지께 들은 진리를 그들에게 말한 예수님을 죽이려고 한다. 예수님은 자기 말을 하지 않으신다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지로부터 들은 진리를 말씀한다. 우리도 자신의 말이 아니라 예수님으로부터 들은 진리의 말씀을 말해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 생각하고 말하고 실천해야 한다. 거기에 참되고 온전한 믿음이 있기 때문이다.
예수님은 유대인들이 그들의 아버지가 행한 일들을 행한다고 말한다(41). 유대인들의 행위는 그들의 아버지를 보여 준다. 유대인들이 하나님의 아들 그리스도 예수님을 죽이려는 것은 그들의 아버지처럼 행하기 때문이다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 하나님이 우리 아버지라면 우리는 하나님을 본받아야 한다. 하나님 아버지처럼, 예수님처럼 행해야 한다. 거기에 내가 하나님의 자녀라는 증거가 있다. 우리는 예수님처럼 하나님을 본받아서 사랑으로, 선함으로, 자비와 긍휼로 행해야 한다. 우리 자신이 하나님의 자녀라는 명백한 증거를 삶으로 나타내야 한다.
유대인들은 자기들의 아버지는 하나님이라고 주장한다(41). 하지만 예수님은 유대인들의 주장을 그대로 인정하지 않는다(42). 만일 유대인들이 자기들의 아버지 하나님을 사랑했다면, 그 아들도 사랑했어야 한다. 예수님은 하나님을 사랑하는 증거는 하나님이 보내신 아들을 사랑하는 것이라고 말한다(42). 우리는 하나님이 보내신 독생자 예수님을 사랑해야 한다. 그것이 하나님을 사랑하는 길이다. 아들 예수님을 사랑하지 않고는 하나님을 사랑하는 길은 없다. 하나님 아버지가 사랑하고 귀하게 여기는 아들 예수님을 미워하면서 하나님을 사랑한다고 하는 것은 모순이다. 우리는 하나님으로부터 오신 예수님의 말씀을 받고 순종해야 한다. 거기에 하나님 아버지와 아들 예수님을 사랑하는 길이 있기 때문이다.
One Who Receives the Word (John 8:37 – 42)
Stephan preached the Word to the Jews. However, the Jews refused to listen and killed him. Among those listening to Jesus, there were those who accepted his word and those who did not. The same applies to the present day. Today’s passage is about people who listen to Jesus’ word but do not accept it.
Jesus speaks to the Jews in verse 37. He acknowledges that they are Abraham’s descendants by blood. Jesus says that the Jews who are Abraham’s descendants are trying to kill him. Why was that? Jesus says that it was because they did not have the word of Jesus inside them. They rejected Jesus’ word and did not accept it. This is a serious problem. Jesus’ word is not some person’s word. His word is almighty. His word is the eternal word that has life, salvation, holiness, truth, righteousness, purity, and certainty. Accepting his word is the most precious, blessed, and important. Not accepting his word is a sin and conceives destruction. We must long for and accept his word from our heart.
The Jews did not accept Jesus’ word. They did not believe nor obey. As a result, they tried to kill Jesus. They did not keep the Law. Unbelief conceives a dreadful, criminal result that brings about self-destruction. However, those who accept his word obey with faith. They obey the word through the Holy Spirit. Therefore, they enjoy the Lord’s favor and blessing, pleasing and glorifying him. We must keep his word in our hearts and put it into practice.
Jesus speaks about what he has seen from God the Father (v38). Jesus does not speak about what he has not seen nor heard. Jesus saw everything that God has done. Jesus was with God the Father from the beginning and watched God work. Jesus speaks about what he has seen from God. Jesus says that the Jews also do what their father does. They are trying to kill Jesus like their father. The Jews claim that Abraham is their father (v39). However, Jesus says that they do not act like Abraham.
Jesus tells the Jews that they have a father who is not Abraham. Jesus is saying that the Jews are not Abraham’s descendents from faith and spiritual perspective. This is because they did not do what Abraham did. A child resembles their father. Jesus took after God the Father and did what God did. If the Jews were Abraham’s descendents, they should have done what Abraham did. Abraham saw the day of Jesus and rejoiced (v56). However, the Jews who claimed to be descendants of Abraham hated and persecuted Jesus. They were nothing like Abraham.
The Jews try to kill Jesus who was telling them about the truth he heard from God the Father. Jesus does not speak his own words. Jesus speaks the truth he heard from God the Father. We also must not speak our own words but the truth we have heard from Jesus. We must think about the Lord’s word and obey it. That is where true and complete faith lies.
Jesus says that the Jews do what their father does (v41). The act of the Jews reveals their father. The Jews are trying to kill Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as their own father does. We must remember that if God is our Father, we must become like God. We must act like God the Father and Jesus. That proves that we are God’s children. We must become like Jesus and act in love, kindness, mercy and compassion. We must live a life that shows that we are God’s children.
The Jews claim that their father is God (v41). However, Jesus does not approve of their claim (v42). If the Jews loved God the Father, they would have loved God’s Son as well. Jesus says that the evidence that we love God is that we love the Son that God has sent (v42). We must love the Son, Jesus, whom God has sent. That is the way to love God. There is no way to love God without loving the Son Jesus. It’s a contradiction to say that we love God when we hate God’s beloved Son Jesus Christ. We must receive the Word of Jesus that comes from God and obey it. That is the way to love God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
