세상에는 거짓과 진실이 있다. 사람들 중에는 진실한 사람, 거짓의 사람이 있다. 어떤 사람들은 거짓으로 속이고 사기를 친다. 어떤 자매가 자신을 명문대 출신이며 돈 많은 부자라고 속이고 결혼 했다. 남편은 결혼 후에 다 거짓임을 알게 되었다. 그 결혼은 결국 이혼으로 끝났다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 거짓의 근원에 대해서 말한다.
유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 이해하지 못했다. 예수님은 그들이 주님의 말씀을 들을 줄 알지 못한다고 말씀한다. 우리는 예수님의 말씀은 들을 수 있는 귀가 있어야 한다. 모든 사람이 다 들을 수 있는 것이 아니다. 주님은 성령으로 말씀하신다. 예수님의 말씀은 믿음으로 성령을 받을 때에 이해할 수 있다. 유대인들은 예수님을 믿지 않고 성령도 없었다. 그래서 그들은 듣고도 깨닫지 못했다. 우리가 예수님 말씀을 듣고, 깨닫고, 행하는 것은 성령을 받았기 때문이다. 성령이 없이는 하나님 말씀은 바르게 알고 행할 수 없다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 알고 행할 수 있도록 성령으로 기도해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 도움을 구해야 한다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 일에 최선을 다해야 한다.
예수님은 주님의 말씀을 듣지 못하는 유대인들에게 말씀한다. “너희는 너희 아버지 마귀에게서 났다” 예수님은 ‘너희 아버지는 마귀다. 너희는 아버지 마귀의 자녀들이다’라고 말씀한다. 성경은 마귀에 대해서 사탄, 귀신, 악한 영, 미혹하는 자, 시험하는 자, 불순종의 영 등으로 묘사한다. 마귀는 눈에 보이지 않는다. 마귀는 영적인 존재다. 마귀는 영적인 피조물인 사람의 영과 마음 그리고 생각 속에서 역사한다. 사람을 속이고, 유혹하고, 죄 짓게 하고, 불순종하게 한다. 마귀는 성도가 믿음과 주의 말씀에서 떠나게 한다. 사탄은 아담과 하와를 유혹했다. 그래서 마귀는 그들이 하나님 말씀을 순종하지 못하게 했다. 가룟 유다는 마귀가 주는 생각을 따라서 예수님을 팔았다. 지금도 마귀는 수많은 사람들이 주를 믿지 못하게 한다. 마귀는 사람들이 주의 말씀을 순종하지 못하게 한다. 마귀는 사람들을 유혹하여 주님과 말씀 그리고 믿음에서 떠나게 한다. 마귀는 사람들이 세상에 있는 것을 의지하고, 사랑하며, 좋아하게 한다. 마귀는 주님과 말씀을 사랑하며, 기뻐하며, 귀히 여기며, 순종하며 사는 것을 싫어한다.
예수님은 유대인들에게 ‘너희 아버지는 마귀다. 너희는 아버지 마귀를 닮았다. 그래서 너희는 마귀가 행하는 그대로 너희도 행한다’라고 말한다. 자녀는 아버지를 닮는다. 사람들은 자녀를 보면서 그 사람의 아버지를 알 수 있다. 예수님은 믿지 않고, 대적하고, 핍박하고, 죽이려고 하는 것은 마귀의 행위다. 유대인들은 그들의 아버지 마귀가 하는 대로 행한다. 지금도 마귀에게 속하여 마귀의 일을 하는 사람들이 많다. 그들은 주님을 믿지 않고 순종하지 않는다. 주님을 믿고, 사랑하고, 순종하는 사람들은 하나님께 속했다. 우리는 하나님께 속한 사람으로 살아야 한다. 그래서 주님을 믿고, 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다.
인간은 자기의 능력과 방법으로 마귀를 이길 수 없다. 그래서 하나님은 독생자 예수님을 보내셨다. 예수님은 마귀의 일을 없애려고 오셨다(히 2:14; 요일 3:8). 우리가 마귀의 유혹과 권세에서 벗어나는 길은 있다. 그것은 예수님을 구주로 믿고, 성령을 받고, 주의 말씀을 순종하는 것이다. 예수님은 마귀는 처음부터 살인한 자라고 말한다(44). 마귀는 첫 사람 아담과 하와가 죄를 짓고 죽게 했다. 지금도 마귀는 수많은 사람들을 죽게 한다.
마귀는 그 속에 진리가 없다. 마귀는 진리의 말씀을 마음에 가지고 살지 않는다. 그래서 마귀는 진리를 행할 능력이 없다. 진리를 행하는 능력은 성령께 있다. 성령은 진리의 말씀을 마음에 가지고 행하게 한다. 마귀는 거짓을 말할 때마다 자기 것으로 말한다. 진리와 믿음의 관점에서 거짓은 마귀에게서 나온다. 마귀는 거짓의 영이다. 마귀는 사람의 마음에 거짓이 있게 한다. 그는 사람들을 속이면서 주님과 진리를 믿지 못하게 한다. 마귀는 진실보다 거짓을 믿게 한다. 예수님은 마귀는 거짓말쟁이, 거짓의 아버지라고 말한다(44). 마귀는 진리와 진실이 없다. 그는 오직 거짓만이 있을 뿐이다. 마귀는 거짓을 사랑한다. 마귀에게 속한 사람도 거짓을 사랑한다.
우리는 진리의 주님을 믿고 순종하여 주님을 닮아야 한다. 우리가 거짓의 아버지 마귀의 유혹과 권세에서 벗어나는 길은 진리를 순종하는 것이다. 우리는 성령의 역사를 따라서 예수님처럼 진리를 마음으로부터 순종해야 한다. 우리는 성령으로 거듭난 하나님 아버지의 자녀다. 성령의 사람은 악한 마귀를 이긴다. 예수님은 성령으로 귀신을 제압했다. 우리도 성령으로 살아야 한다. 우리가 성령으로 역하시는 말씀으로 살면 마귀를 이길 수 있다. 동시에 우리는 진리의 예수님을 본받아서 진실한 하나님의 자녀로 사람으로 살 수 있다.
Father of Lies (John 8:43-44)
In this world are truths and lies. Among people, there are those who are truthful and those who are deceitful. Some people deceive with lies and practice fraud. There was a person who lied to their partner that they are rich and are an alumni of a prestigious university and they got married. The partner found out that what they said about themselves was a lie and their marriage ended in a divorce. Today’s passage talks about the source of lies.
The Jews heard Jesus but did not understand him. Jesus tells them that they are unable to hear what he says. We ought to have ears that can hear what Jesus says. Not everyone can hear it. Jesus speaks through the Holy Spirit. We are able to understand Jesus’ words when we receive the Holy Spirit through faith. The Jews did not believe in Jesus nor had the Holy Spirit. So they could not understand what they heard. We are able to hear, understand, and practice the word of Jesus because we have received the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot know the word of God correctly and put it into practice. We ought to pray in the Holy Spirit that we can know his words and put them into practice. We must seek our Lord’s help. We must make every effort to hear the word of our Lord and obey it.
Jesus speaks to the Jews who are not able to hear his words: “You belong to your father, the devil” (v44). He says that their father is the devil and they are the devil’s children. The Bible describes the devil as Satan, demon, evil spirit, deceiver, tempter, and the spirit of disobedience. The devil is invisible. It is a spiritual being. It works in the spirit, mind, and thoughts of people, who are spiritual creatures. It makes people deceive, mislead, sin, and disobey. It leads people to depart from faith and the Word. Satan tempted Adam and Eve and led them away from obedience. Judas Iscariot sold Jesus according to the thoughts given him by the devil. Even now the devil disables people from believing in the Lord. It incapacitates people from obeying the word of the Lord. The devil deceives people and makes them depart from the Lord, his word, and faith. The devil makes people trust in, love, and be attached to the things of the world. It hates loving, enjoying, and valuing the word of God and obeying it.
Jesus tells the Jews, ‘Your father is the devil. You take after your father, the devil. So you do exactly what the devil does.” Children take after their father. People are able to know the father by looking at their children. Not believing, resisting, persecuting, and trying to kill are all the acts of the devil. The Jews were doing what their father the devil does. There are many people even today who belong to the devil and carry out his desires. They do not believe in the Lord or obey him. Believing in the Lord, loving and obeying him belong to God. We must live as those who belong to God. Therefore, we ought to believe in the Lord and obey his words.
People are not able to overcome the devil with their strength or wisdom. Therefore, God sent his one and only Son Jesus. Jesus came to destroy the devil’s works (Hebrews 2:14; 1 John 3:8). There is a way to escape from the temptation and power of the devil. It is by believing in Jesus Christ as the Savior, receiving the Holy Spirit, and obeying the word of God. Jesus says that the devil was a murderer from the beginning (v44). The devil made the first person Adam and Eve to sin and die. Even today the devil makes many people die.
There is no truth in the devil. It does not live by the word of truth. So it does not have the power to carry out the truth. The power to carry out the truth is in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables us to keep the word of truth in our hearts and obey it. The devil speaks its native language when it lies. Lies originate from the devil from the perspective of the truth and faith. The devil is the spirit of deception. It plants lies in people’s hearts. It deceives people and keeps them from believing the Lord and the truth. It makes people believe in lies rather than truth. Jesus says that the devil is a liar and the father of lies (v44). There is no truth in the devil but only lies. The devil loves lies and those who belong to the devil also love lies.
We must believe in and obey the Lord of truth and take after him. The way to escape from the power and temptation of the devil, the father of lies, is by obeying the truth. We must obey the truth from our heart according to the work of the Holy Spirit, just like Jesus. We are the children of God our Father who have been born again by the Spirit. The person of the Spirit overcomes the devil. Jesus subdued the devil with the Holy Spirit. We must also live by the Holy Spirit. We can overcome the devil when we live by the Word that works through the Holy Spirit. At the same time, we are able to live as truthful children of God by following the example of Jesus of Truth.
