모든 과일나무는 열매를 맺는다. 그것은 하나님의 섭리에 따른 나무의 본분이다. 예수님은 그리스도인을 열매 맺는 나무에 비유한다. 예수님은 좋은 나무는 좋은 열매를 맺고, 나쁜 나무는 나쁜 열매를 맺는다고 말씀한다(마 7:15-27). 주 예수를 구주로 믿는 성도는 좋은 나무다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 그리스도인이 맺어야 할 성령의 열매에 대해서 말한다.
성령의 사람이 성령의 열매를 맺는다. 성령의 사람은 믿음의 사람, 말씀의 사람, 그리스도 예수의 사람이다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리가 성령의 사람이 되지 않으면 성령의 열매를 맺을 수 없다. 우리는 믿음으로 성령을 받고 거듭나서 성령의 사람이 된다. 그리스도인은 성령의 열매를 맺는 성령의 나무와 같다. 성령이 없는 성령의 열매는 없다. 우리는 성령의 열매를 맺기 위하여 성령의 사람이 되어야 한다.
우리는 성령으로 살아야 한다. 우리가 성령으로 살지 않고는 성령의 열매를 맺을 수 없다. 우리가 성령의 사람이라는 증거는 이것이다. 곧 내가 성령으로 살아야 한다는 것이다(갈 5:16, 18). 예수님은 성령으로 사셨다. 예수님은 성령으로 행하면서 성령의 열매를 맺으셨다. 우리는 성령의 열매를 맺은 예수님처럼 성령으로 살아야 한다. 그러면 우리는 성령의 열매를 맺을 수 있다. 성령으로 사는 것은 무엇인가? 그것은 성령으로 역사하시는 주의 말씀으로 사는 것이다. 예수님은 하나님 말씀으로 살면서 성령의 그리스도임을 증거하셨다. 그래서 성령의 사람은 곧 주 예수의 사람이요, 말씀의 사람이다. 성령의 역사는 진리의 말씀의 역사다. 우리는 성령이 내 마음에 주는 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 우리는 순종을 통하여 성령의 열매를 맺는다.
성령의 열매는 사랑이다. 하나님은 사랑이시다(요일 4:8, 16). 성령은 하나님의 영이다. 따라서 하나님의 사랑은 하나님의 영인 성령으로 우리 마음에 주어진다. 우리는 사랑의 하나님 아버지를 본받아야 한다. 그래서 우리는 사랑으로 행해야 한다. 그러면 우리는 사랑의 열매를 맺는다. 스데반은 자기를 돌로 쳐서 죽이는 사람들을 용서했다. 그것은 원수를 사랑하는 용서다. 내가 사랑으로 행하면 성령의 열매를 맺는다. 사랑의 영인 성령은 우리 마음에 사랑하는 능력을 준다. 그래서 우리가 사랑으로 행하게 한다. 우리 마음에 계시는 성령은 하나님, 형제, 이웃 그리고 원수를 사랑하게 한다. 예수님은 자기를 박해하고 죽이는 사람들을 위해 기도했다. 그래서 예수님은 사랑으로 행하시면서 성령의 열매를 맺었다. 우리가 성령의 열매를 맺었다는 확실한 증거는 사랑이다. 사랑이 없는 성령의 열매는 없다. 우리는 하나님 아버지와 주님을 본받아서 사랑으로 행해야 한다.
기쁨은 성령의 열매다. 성령은 우리 마음에 의의 거룩한 기쁨을 준다. 그것은 주님이 주시는 구원의 기쁨, 하늘의 기쁨이다. 죄는 기쁨을 상실하게 한다. 하지만 믿음의 순종은 기쁨을 준다. 우리가 믿음으로 순종하는 것은 성령의 역사다. 그래서 우리는 주의 말씀으로 살면서 기쁨의 열매를 맺는다. 우리는 어떤 상황에서든지 항상 기뻐해야 한다(살전 5:16). 주 안에서의 기쁨은 성령의 열매를 맺었다는 증거다. 성령은 우리 마음에 평안을 준다. 성령은 평강의 영이다. 우리는 믿음과 말씀으로 살면서 평안을 누릴 수 있다. 성령은 하나님과 주 예수의 평안을 우리 마음에 준다(요 14:27). 성령은 평안한 마음으로 화평하게 살게 한다. 우리는 모든 사람과 화평해야 한다. 우리는 갈등과 대립 그리고 반목을 피해야 한다.
우리는 모든 상황에서 오래 참아야 한다. 예수님은 십자가의 고통을 참으셨다. 성령은 우리가 주님의 마음으로 오래 참게 한다. 우리는 모든 일과 모든 사람 대해서 오래 참아야 한다. 우리는 끝까지 견디고 견뎌야 한다. 그러면 우리는 성령의 열매를 맺는다. 성령의 사람은 자비의 사람이다. 이유는 무엇인가? 하나님 아버지와 예수님이 자비롭기 때문이다. 우리는 하나님과 주님을 본받아서 자비로워야 한다. 우리는 주님처럼 다른 사람을 용납하고, 용서하고, 허물을 덮어 주어야 한다. 그리스도인은 무자비한 사람이 되어서는 안된다. 하나님은 선하시다(시 136:1: 마 19:17). 하나님의 선하심이 주 안에서 선하신 하나님의 영인 성령으로 주어진다. 성령이 마음에 있는 사람은 하나님처럼 선하다. 우리는 예수님처럼 선을 행해야 한다. 예수님의 삶은 다 선함이었다. 우리는 형제와 이웃을 돕고 섬겨야 한다.
성령의 사람은 신실하다. 성령의 사람은 말, 행위, 직분, 믿음, 말씀, 관계에서 신실하다. 성령은 우리 마음에 신실함을 준다. 우리는 모든 행위와 관계에서 믿을 만한 사람이 되어야 한다.
예수님의 마음은 온유하시다. 주님의 영인 성령은 우리 마음을 온유하게 한다. 우리는 온유한 마음으로 주님을 잘 순종하고 모든 사람에게 친절해야 한다. 그리스도인은 성령의 열매인 온유한 마음을 가진 사람이다. 온유는 사람을 대하는 부드럽고 친절한 태도다. 절제는 성령의 열매다. 성령은 절제의 마음을 준다. 성령은 우리의 마음, 감정, 생각, 말, 행동을 자제하게 한다. 성령은 우리가 주님의 말씀으로 살게 한다. 성령은 그 말씀의 능력으로 절제를 가져 온다. 우리가 사랑으로 행하면 복수의 감정을 자제할 수 있다. 우리가 감사함으로 살면 원망하는 마음을 절제할 수 있다. 우리는 마음을 자제하면서 성령의 열매를 맺는다. 우리는 예수님처럼 성령으로 살고, 말씀으로 살면서 성령의 열매를 맺자. 그래서 우리는 자신이 그리스도인이요 성령의 사람이라는 것을 증명하자.
Fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
Every fruit tree bears fruit. This is the duty of a fruit tree according to God’s providence. Jesus compares Christians to a fruit tree that bears fruit. Jesus says that a good tree bears good fruit and a bad tree bears bad fruit (Matthew 7:15-27). Those who believe in Jesus as their Lord are good trees. Today’s passage tells us about the fruit of the Holy Spirit that Christians should bear.
A man of the Holy Spirit bears the fruit of the Holy Spirit. A man of the Holy Spirit is the man of faith, of the Word, and of Jesus Christ. We must remember that unless we become a man of the Holy Spirit we cannot bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. When we believe, we receive the Holy Spirit and become people of the Holy Spirit. A Christian is like a tree of the Holy Spirit that bears the fruit of the Holy Spirit. There is no tree of the Holy Spirit without the Holy Spirit. To bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit we must become people of the Holy Spirit.
We must live by the Holy Spirit. Without living by the Holy Spirit, we cannot bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The evidence that we are people of the Holy Spirit is that we live by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16, 18). Jesus lived by the Holy Spirit. Jesus lived by the Holy Spirit and bore the fruit of the Holy Spirit. We must become like Jesus Christ and live by the Holy Spirit. Only then can we bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. What does it mean to live by the Holy Spirit? It is to live by the Word of the Lord that works in the Holy Spirit. Jesus proved that he was the Christ by obeying the Word of God. That is why a man of the Holy Spirit is a man of the Lord Jesus and a man of the Word. The work of the Holy Spirit is the work of the Word of Truth. We must obey the Word of the Lord that is given to us by the Holy Spirit. Through obedience, we bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
A fruit of the Holy Spirit is love. God is love (1 John 4:8, 16). The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. Thus, the love of God is given to us by the Holy Spirit of God. We must become like God the Father of love. We must live in love. Only then, we can bear the fruit of love. Stephan forgave those who stoned him to death. Forgiveness is love for our enemies. When we live in love, we bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, which is the spirit of love, gives us the power to love. It enables us to love. It makes us love God, brothers, neighbors and enemies. Jesus prayed for the people who persecuted and murdered him. By loving, Jesus bore the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The sure evidence that we bore the fruit of the Holy Spirit is love. There is no fruit of the Holy Spirit without love. We must become like God the Father and the Lord, and act in love.
Another fruit of the Holy Spirit is joy. The Holy Spirit gives us a holy and righteous joy. This is the joy of salvation and joy of heaven given by the Lord. Sin takes away joy. However, obedience of faith brings joy. Obeying in faith is the work of the Holy Spirit. When we live by the Holy Spirit, we bear the fruit of joy. We must be joyful in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16). Joy in the Lord is an evidence of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit brings peace to our heart. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of peace. When we live by faith and the Word, we can enjoy peace. The Holy Spirit gives us peace in God and the Lord Jesus (John 14:27). The Holy Spirit makes us live in peace. We must be at peace with everyone. We must avoid conflict and feud.
We must be patient in all situations. Jesus endured the pain of the cross. The Holy Spirit makes us patient with the mind of the Lord. We must be patient with all things and all people. We must endure to the end. Then, we can bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
A man of the Holy Spirit is the man of mercy. Why? God the Father and Jesus were merciful. We must become like God and our Lord and be merciful. Like the Lord, we must accept, forgive, and cover the faults of others. Christians must not become unmerciful.
God is good (Psalm 136:1; Matthew 19:17). The goodness of God is given by the Holy Spirit, which is the spirit of the good God. Those who have the Holy Spirit are good like God. We must do good like Jesus. The life of Jesus was good. We must help and serve our brothers and neighbors.
A man of the Holy Spirit is faithful. They are faithful in speech, action, work, faith, and relationship. The Holy Spirit gives us a mind of faithfulness. We must become trustworthy people in all our actions and relationships.
The mind of Jesus is gentle. The Holy Spirit, which is the spirit of the Lord, makes our mind gentle. We must obey the Lord with gentleness and treat everyone with kindness. A Christian is the one who has a gentle mind of the Holy Spirit. Gentleness is a soft and kind attitude toward others.
Another fruit of the Holy Spirit is self control. The Holy Spirit controls our mind, emotions, thoughts, speech and actions. It makes us live by the Word of the Lord. The Holy Spirit enables us to control ourselves by the power of the Word. When we love, we can resist the urge to take revenge. When we live with thankfulness, we can resist the feeling of resentment. We bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit as we control our mind. Let us live like Jesus in the Holy Spirit, obey the Word and bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Let us prove that we are a Christian and a man of the Holy Spirit.
