사람들의 관심 중의 하나가 장수다. 장수는 이 세상에서 오래 사는 것을 의미한다. 장수의 조건은 몇 가지 있다. 첫째는 병이 없어야 한다. 병은 수명을 단축시킨다. 사람은 병이 없을 때 장수한다. 또한 좋은 음식을 먹어야 한다. 장수를 위한 건강 음식이 있다고 한다. 그리고 건강하게 오래 살기 위한 운동이다. 사람들은 건강하게 오래 살기를 소망한다. 성경은 장수가 아닌 영원히 사는 길을 제시한다. 이것은 모든 사람의 소망이요 복이다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 영원한 삶을 가르쳐 준다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “사람이 내 말을 지키면 영원히 죽음을 보지 않는다”(51). 이 말은 예수님이 사람의 죽음과 생명의 주권을 갖고 계시다는 의미다. 예수님은 성자 하나님이시요 그리스도 구주이시다. 주님은 피조물인 인간과 다르다. 모든 사람의 운명을 다스리시는 분이 예수님이다. 예수님은 사람, 곧 죄인이요 구원 받아야 할 모든 사람이 죽지 않는 길을 제시한다. 그것은 생명이요 진리요 구주이신 예수님의 말씀을 순종하는 것이다. 모든 사람은 죄 때문에 죽는다. 죄는 영원히 사는 길의 걸림 돌이다. 사람은 죄를 씻으면 죽음에서 벗어나 영원히 산다. 예수님은 십자가의 피로 믿는 자의 죄를 깨끗하게 하신다. 주님은 속죄와 함께 부할의 권능으로 구원하신다. 주님은 십자가와 부활의 주 예수를 믿는 자에게 성령을 주신다. 성령으로 거듭난 사람은 생명을 얻고 천국에서 영원히 살게 된다. 그래서 성령으로 거듭난 성도는 육체의 죽음과 상관 없이 주님과 함께 영생한다.
예수님은 죽음을 보지 않고 영원히 살려면 순종해야 한다고 말씀한다. 예수님은 순종의 중요성을 말씀한다. 사람은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고, 믿고, 순종할 때에 영원히 산다. 아담은 불순종하여 죽었다. 예수님은 순종하셔서 생명의 부활을 하셨다. 예수님의 십자가의 순종은 영생의 길을 열었다. 죄인 된 사람이 주 예수를 구주로 믿고 순종하면 영원히 산다. 우리는 예수님을 본받아서 주님의 말씀에 순종해야 한다. 순종이 없다는 말은 믿음이 없다는 말이다. 참 믿음은 내가 믿는 주님의 말씀을 순종할 때 증명된다. 믿음의 순종 없는 속죄, 구원 그리고 영생은 없다. 우리는 순종의 중요성을 알아야 한다. 주님의 말씀에 대한 순종은 영생의 지름길이요 필수코스다. 우리는 순종의 사람이 되어야 한다. 우리는 주님께 순종해야 한다.
유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 또 다시 주님을 모독하는 말을 한다(52). 유대인들은 회개하지 않았다. 그들은 죄에 죄를 더하고 있다. 그들은 예수님이 귀신 들렸다고 말한다. 이것은 예수님께 대한 신성모독이요 큰 범죄다. 우리는 예수님이 성령으로 충만하신 것을 믿는다. 유대인들은 아브라함과 선지자들도 죽었다고 하면서, 사람이 예수님 말씀을 지키면 영원히 죽음을 보지 않을 것이라는 예수님의 말씀의 의미를 이해하지 못하고 있다. 그들은 예수님이 조상 아브라함보다 크냐고 반문한다. 예수님은 아브라함이 태어나기 전부터 계셨다. 예수님은 성부 하나님과 영원 전부터 계셨다. 예수님은 아브라함의 주이시다. 아브라함은 예수님과 비교 대상이 아니다. 예수님은 만물보다 크신 성자 하나님이시다. 유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 도무지 이해하지 못했다. 그것은 무슨 이유일까요? 이유는 간단하다. 그들이 예수님을 하나님의 아들 그리스도로 믿지 않았기 때문이다. 믿지 않으면 도무지 알 수 없다. 예수님과 예수님의 말씀은 믿음으로 이해 된다. 믿음은 주님을 아는 지식의 통로다. 그래서 우리는 믿음으로 예수님을 알고 순종한다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “내가 나에게 영광을 돌리면 내 영광은 아무것도 아니다. 내게 영광을 돌리시는 분이 아버지 하나님이시다”(54). 예수님은 자기에게 영광을 돌리지 않으신다. 즉 예수님은 자신의 영광을 구하지 않는다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지의 영광을 구하셨다. 하나님의 영광을 위해 사셨다. 그래서 하나님은 아들 예수님으로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨다. 아들로 인하여 영광을 받으신 하나님은 아들에게 영광을 주신다(요 13:32; 요 17:1). 하나님은 아들 예수님을 영화롭게 하셔서, 아들이 하나님을 영화롭게 하신다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 우리는 자신의 영광을 구하지 않는다. 우리는 주님을 영광을 구한다. 우리가 예수님을 영화롭게 하면, 예수님은 우리를 영화롭게 한다. 우리가 주님으로부터 영광을 얻는 길은 주님을 영화롭게 하는 것이다. 내가 주님을 영화롭게 하면 주님은 나를 영화롭게 한다. 주님은 죄인 된 나를 십자가의 피로 거룩하게 하셔서 영화롭게 하셨다. 영화롭게 된 우리는 주님의 영광을 위해 산다. 우리는 주님의 영광을 얻기 위해서 주님을 영화롭게 해야 한다. 주님을 영화롭게 하는 길은 순종이다. 우리는 주님을 순종하면서 거룩하고 삶을 살아야 한다. 거기에 주님의 영광, 주님이 주시는 영광이 있다.
Living Eternally (John 8:51 – 54)
One of the main interests of people is longevity. Longevity means living long in this life. There are conditions for achieving longevity. The first is that one has to be free of illness as illness can reduce one’s life span. Second is eating healthy food. Research shows that some foods promote longevity. Third is exercise. Many people wish to live long. The Bible tells you how to live eternally. This is the hope of all people and a blessing. Today’s passage teaches us about eternal life.
Jesus says, “Whoever obeys my word will never see death” (v51). This means that Jesus has sovereignty over the life and death of people. Jesus is God the Son and Christ the Lord. Jesus is unlike humans, the creatures. Jesus is the one who governs everyone’s fate. Jesus teaches us, sinners, the way of salvation and eternal life. The way is obeying the word of Jesus, who is life and truth. Everyone dies for their sins. Sin is a stumbling block to eternal life. When a person’s sins are washed away, they escape death and live eternally. Through his blood shed on the cross, Jesus washes away the sins of believers. Through atonement and the power of resurrection, the Lord saves. The Lord gives the Holy Spirit to those who believe in the Lord Jesus of the cross and the resurrection. Those who are renewed by the Holy Spirit receive eternal life and live in heaven eternally. They live with the Lord eternally regardless of the death of the physical body.
Jesus says that to live eternally and not see death, we must obey. Jesus talks about the importance of obedience. A person can live eternally when they hear the word of Jesus, believe and obey. Adam disobeyed and died. Jesus obeyed and was resurrected from death. Jesus’ obedience to crucifixion opened the way for eternal life. When a sinner believes in the Lord Jesus as the Savior and obey, they live eternally. We must become like Jesus and obey the word of the Lord. If there is no obedience, it means there is no faith. True faith is proven by obedience of the Lord in whom we believe. There is no atonement, salvation and eternal life apart from obedience in faith. We must understand the importance of obedience. Obedience to the word of the Lord is the highway and the only way to eternal life. We must become people of obedience. We must obey the Lord.
When the Jews heard Jesus, again they mocked him (v52). The Jews did not repent. They were adding sin over sin. They claimed that Jesus was demon possessed. This is blasphemy towards Jesus and a huge crime. We believe that Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit. The Jews said that even Abraham and the prophets died and so they did not understand what Jesus meant when he said that those who obey his word will never see death. They were asking Jesus if he was greater than Abraham. Jesus was there before Abraham was born. Jesus was there eternity ago with God the Father. Jesus is the Lord of Abraham. Jesus and Abraham cannot be compared. Jesus is greater than all creatures and is God the Son. The Jews could never understand the word of Jesus. Why was that? The reason is simple. They did not believe in Jesus as the Son of God and Christ. One can never understand if they do not believe. We can only understand Jesus and his word through faith. Faith is the way of knowing the Lord. That is why we must know the Lord by faith and obey.
Jesus says, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me” (v54). Jesus did not glorify himself. He did not seek his own glory. Jesus sought the glory of God the Father. He lived for the glory of God. Thus, God was glorified through His son, Jesus. God who is glorified by the Son gives glory to the Son (John 13:32; John 17:1). Same goes for us. We must not seek our own glory. We must seek the glory of the Lord. Then, Jesus will glorify us. To be glorified by God, we must glorify the Lord. Jesus made us holy through the blood of the cross and glorified us. Those who are glorified by the Lord live for the glory of the Lord. To receive the glory of the Lord, we must glorify the Lord. The way to glorify the Lord is obedience. We must obey the Lord and live a holy life. That is how we see the glory of the Lord and receive the glory given by the Lord.
