사람의 마음에는 기쁨이 있다. 어떤 사람이 간절히 원하는 직장에 취직했다. 그것은 그에게 큰 기쁨이 되었다. 사람은 마음에 소원하는 일이 이루어졌을 때에 즐거움이 있다. 오늘 본문은 아브라함의 기쁨에 대해서 언급한다.
예수님은 앞 부분에 이어서 말한다. 예수님은 유대인들이 하나님을 알지 못한다고 말씀한다. 이것은 실제로 상당히 모순적이다. 유대인들은 구약성경을 잘 알고 있다고 생각했다. 그들은 모세의 율법과 선지자들의 글을 읽고, 배우고, 연구했다. 그래서 유대인들은 성경을 알고 있다고 확신했다. 그들은 성경에서 말하는 하나님을 잘 안다고 생각했다. 그들은 천지를 창조하신 하나님, 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 하나님, 이스라엘을 애굽에서 구원하신 하나님을 안다고 생각했다. 하지만 예수님은 ‘너희는 하나님을 모른다’고 말씀한다. 그 이유는 무엇일까?
우리는 성경을 통해서 예수님의 말씀을 이해할 수 있다. 예수님은 말한다. “너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 연구한다. 이 성경은 내게 대한 것이다”(요 5:39). 여기서 말하는 성경은 구약성경이다. 구약의 모세와 선지자들은 예수님을 말하고 전했다. 예수님은 자기에 대하여 기록된 구약 성경을 제자들에게 알려 주었다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리가 성경을 안다는 것은 단지 지식적으로 아는 것이 아니다. 성경이 말하는 예수님을 알 때에 우리는 참으로 성경을 아는 것이다. 우리가 구약에서 예수님을 배우지 못했다면 우리는 구약성경을 바르게 알지 못하는 것이다. 우리가 성경을 참되게 아는 길은 이것이다. 우리가 하나님의 아들 그리스도 예수를 알 때이다.
유대인들은 구약성경이 가르치는 하나님의 아들 예수님을 알지 못했다. 만일 그들이 예수님을 알았다면, 성경대로 예수님을 하나님의 아들 메시야로 믿었을 것이다. 하지만 그들은 하나님은 안다고 하면서, 정작 하나님이 말씀하시고 보내신 아들 예수 그리스도를 몰랐다. 우리가 하나님을 아는 길은 하나님이 보내신 성자 예수 그리스도를 통해서다. 예수님은 말한다. “너희가 나를 알았다면 내 아버지도 알았을 것이다”(요 14:7). 하나님은 자기를 아는 방법을 정해 놓으셨다. 그것은 아들 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이다. 아들 예수님을 알지 못하면 아버지 하나님도 알지 못하게 된다. 따라서 우리는 성경이 말하는 예수 그리스도를 알아야 한다. 그것은 하나님을 아는 지름길이다. 우리가 성경에서 예수님을 알면 알수록 하나님을 그만큼 알게 된다. 예수님을 아는 것과 하나님을 아는 것은 비례한다. 예수님을 알지 못하면서 하나님을 아는 길은 없다.
그래서 우리는 성경에서 예수님을 배워야 한다. 우리는 성경에서 도덕적 교훈과 삶의 지혜를 배우는 것이 아니다. 우리는 성경에서 하나님의 아들 그리스도 주 예수를 배운다. 예수 그리스도 없는 성경은 무익하다. 예수 없는 신앙은 아무 유익이 없다. 우리는 성경에서 예수님을 배워야 한다. 우리는 성경이 말하는 예수 그리스도를 통해서 성경을 배우고 이해해야 한다. 그것이 성경을 배우는 바른 길이다.
예수님은 하나님 아버지를 안다고 말씀한다. 이것은 단순한 논리이다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들이다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지와 영원전부터 함께 계셨다. 예수님은 아버지가 하시는 일을 다 보았다. 예수님이 하나님 아버지를 아는 것은 당연하다. 아버지와 함께 항상 같은 집에서 사는 자녀가 아버지를 모른다는 것은 논리적 모순이다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지가 보내셔서 세상에 오셨다. 세상에 오신 예수님은 하나님 아버지의 말씀을 다 지켰다. 예수님은 오직 아버지께 순종하셨다. 그래서 예수님은 우리의 구원을 이루셨다. 우리가 예수님을 아는 길은 순종이다. 우리는 믿고 순종하면서 예수님을 알게 된다. 우리는 주를 알기 위해서 순종해야 한다.
아브라함은 주님을 소망하며 기뻐했다. 그것은 예수님이 이 세상에 오셔서 구주 사역을 이루시는 것이다. 아브라함은 예수 그리스도의 사역을 보고 기뻐했다. 그의 간절한 소원이 이루어졌기 때문이다. 유대인들은 예수님께 묻는다. 그들은 예수님이 50세도 안되서 아브라함을 보았느냐고 말한다. 하지만 예수님은 말씀한다. “진실로 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 나는 아브라함이 태어나기 전부터 있었다”(58). 예수님은 비록 사람으로 오셨지만 영원전부터 계신 성자 하나님이시다. 예수님은 말씀한다. “아버지여 창세 전에 내가 아버지와 함께 가졌던 영화로써 지금도 아버지와 함께 나를 영화롭게 하옵소서”(요 17:5). 예수님은 창조 이전에 아버지와 함께 계셨다. 예수님은 사람처럼 피조물이 아니다. 예수님은 하나님과 동등이시다(빌 2:6). 예수님은 신성이 충만하신 성자 하나님이시다(골 2:9). 예수님은 아브라함의 구주이시다. 유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 믿지 않았다. 그들은 돌을 들어서 치려고 하였다(59). 우리는 오직 믿음으로 예수님의 말씀, 성경 말씀을 들어야 한다. 우리는 듣고, 믿고, 순종해야 한다. 그것이 주님의 말씀에 대한 바른 태도다. 믿음으로 순종하는 삶은 구원과 영생을 가져 온다.
Abraham’s Joy (John 8:55-59)
There are times when people are joyful. A person got into a dream company. It was a source of great joy for them. When a person’s wish comes true, there is joy. Today’s passage talks about Abraham’s joy.
Jesus continues to speak. Jesus tells the Jews that they do not know God. This is actually very paradoxical. The Jews thought they knew the Old Testament very well. They read, learned and studied the law of Moses and the books of the prophets. So they had certainty that they knew the Scriptures. They thought they knew God, whom the Bible talks about, well. They thought they knew God the Creator; the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the God who delivered Israel from Egypt. However, Jesus says ‘You do not know God.’ Why was that?
We can understand Jesus through the Bible. Jesus says, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me” (John 5:39). The Scriptures he is referring to here is the Old Testament. Moses and the prophets in the Old Testament spoke about and preached Jesus. Jesus told the disciples about the Old Testament that is written about him. We must remember that knowing the Bible is not just knowing it in knowledge. When we know Jesus that the Bible records about, then we truly know the Bible. If we did not learn about Jesus in the Old Testament, we did not understand the Old Testament correctly. The way to truly know the Bible is when we know Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
The Jews did not know Jesus, the Son of God, about whom the Old Testament teaches. If they truly knew Jesus, they would have believed Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God, according to the Bible. However, they claimed they knew God, but they knew nothing about Jesus Christ, the Son that God spoke about and sent. The key to knowing God is through God the Son, Jesus Christ whom God has sent. Jesus says, “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well” (John 14:7). God decided on the method of knowing him. It is to know the Son Jesus Christ. Without knowing Jesus, it is impossible to know God the Father. Therefore, we must know Jesus Christ that the Bible talks about. It is the shortcut to knowing God. The more we know about Jesus through the Bible, the more we know about God. Knowing Jesus is proportional to knowing God. There is no way to know God without knowing Jesus.
Thus, we must learn about Jesus from the Bible. We are not learning some ethical lessons or wisdom of life. We are learning about the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, through the Bible. The Bible without Jesus Christ is pointless. Faith without Jesus is not beneficial. We must learn about Jesus from the Bible. We must study and understand the Bible through Jesus Christ.
Jesus says that he knows God the Father. This is simple logic. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus was with God the Father from eternity. Jesus watched all the work of God. Jesus knowing God the Father is obvious. A child who lives with the father not knowing the father is a contradiction. Jesus came to the world because he was sent by God the Father. Jesus obeyed all the words of God. Jesus only obeyed the Father and fulfilled salvation. The way to know Jesus is by faith. By believing and obeying, we come to know Jesus. We must obey in order to know Jesus.
Abraham had hope in the Lord and was joyful. His hope was in the ministry of Jesus who came to the earth. Abraham saw the ministry of Jesus Christ and rejoiced. He rejoiced because his earnest hope was accomplished. The Jews asked Jesus, “You are not even fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?” However, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am” (v58). Though Jesus came as a man, he is God the Son from eternity. Jesus said, “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world existed” (John 17:5). Jesus was with the Father before the creation. Jesus is not created like us humans. Jesus is equal with God (Philippians 2:6). Jesus is God the Son who is fully divine (Colossians 2:9). Jesus is the Lord of Abraham. The Jews heard Jesus but did not believe. They tried to stone Jesus (v59). However, we must listen to the Word of God and Jesus by faith. We must listen, believe and obey. That is the proper attitude towards the Lord’s Word. A life of obedience by faith brings salvation and eternal life.
