목자와 도둑은 다르다. 그들은 양과의 관계에서 확실한 차이를 드러낸다. 도둑은 양을 훔치고 목자는 양을 돌본다. 한 쪽은 해를 끼치고 한 쪽은 유익을 준다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 선한 목자에 대한 교훈이다. 본문은 양과의 관계에서 세 종류를 말한다. 그것은 도둑과 목자와 삯꾼이다. 본문은 선한 목자의 역할을 묘사한다. 우리는 성경을 통해서 선한 목자와 양과의 관계를 알 수 있다.
예수님은 도둑은 양을 훔치고 죽이고 멸망시킨다고 말한다(10). 도둑은 남의 것을 훔치는 사람이다. 도둑은 자기 소유가 아닌 것을 강제로 가져 간다. 도둑은 양을 훔쳐서 죽이고 멸망시킨다. 그는 훔친 양을 돌보지 않는다. 그는 자기의 유익을 위해서 양을 사용한다. 도둑은 양의 생명을 해치고 파괴시킨다. 지금도 세상에는 많은 도둑이 있다. 그들은 주님의 양을 춤친다. 그들은 자기의 유익을 위해서 양을 이용한다. 그들은 주님의 양인 성도의 생명을 해친다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “내가 온 것은 양으로 생명을 얻게 하고 더 풍성히 얻게 하려는 것이라”(10). 예수님이 이 세상에 오신 이유가 무엇인가? 예수님은 양의 생명을 살리기 위해서 오셨다. 예수님이 오시지 않았다면 양들은 살지 못한다. 양들은 예수님 때문에 영생을 얻는다. 예수님은 우리의 생명이다(골 3:4). 주님의 양들인 우리는 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 영생을 얻는다. 주님이 주시는 생명의 풍성함을 얻는 길은 주의 말씀에 있다. 주님의 양인 우리는 주님이 주시는 생명의 꼴을 배불리 먹어야 한다. 그것은 주님의 말씀을 배우고 순종하는 것이다. 우리는 생명의 양식을 주님의 말씀을 통해서 얻기 때문이다. 우리는 영적 생명의 풍성함을 주님의 말씀에서 얻는다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 읽고, 배우며, 순종해야 한다. 거기에 영적 생명의 풍성함과 강건함을 얻는 길이 있다.
예수님은 말한다. “나는 선한 목자다. 선한 목자는 양들을 위하여 목숨을 버린다”(11). 양에게 생명을 주고 더 풍성하게 주시는 분이 예수님이다. 예수님이 선한 목자다. 예수님은 선하시다. 예수님은 선하신 하나님의 아들이시다. 예수님은 선한 영인 성령으로 오셨다. 예수님은 선하신 하나님의 말씀으로 사셨다. 예수님의 마음과 생각과 양심과 삶은 선하다. 선한 목자 예수님은 양들을 위해서 목숨을 버리셨다. 예수님이 선한 목자라는 증거가 여기 있다.
선한 목자 예수님이 양들을 위해서 죽으신 이유가 무엇인가? 그것은 양이 생명을 얻기 위해서다. 예수님은 양을 살리기 위해 십자가에서 피 흘려 죽으셨다. 예수님은 우리의 죄를 씻기 위하여 죽으셨다. 예수님은 십자가의 피로 우리 죄를 깨끗하게 하셨다. 그래서 예수님은 죄와 사망에서 우리를 건지셨다. 예수님은 죄와 허물로 죽은 우리가 영생을 얻기 위해서 자기 목숨을 버리신 것이다. 죄 없으신 예수님은 우리의 죄를 모두 짊어 지시고 죽으셨다. 선한 목자 예수님은 양들을 위해서 수많은 고난과 고통과 멸시를 당하셨다. 그리고 주님은 나를 살렸다. 우리는 주님의 이 크고 놀라운 은혜와 사랑을 잊지 말아야 한다.
예수님은 삯꾼에 대해서 말한다(12). 삯꾼은 목자가 아니다. 양들도 삯꾼의 것이 아니다. 그는 일하고 페이를 받는 사람이다. 삯꾼은 늑대가 오는 것을 보면 도망친다. 늑대는 와서 양을 죽이고 물어 간다. 또 양들은 흩어진다. 그가 도망하는 것은 삯꾼이기 때문이다(13). 그는 목자가 아니요 양도 자기 소유가 아니기 때문에 도망친다. 그는 양을 보호하고 안전하게 지키지 않는다. 삯꾼은 돈을 위해서 일하는 사역자다. 삯꾼 목자는 자기의 수입을 위해서 일한다. 그는 수입이 목적이기 때문에 양을 보호하지 않는다. 그는 양을 돌보는 것은 관심이 없다. 삯꾼은 세상과 죄가 성도들의 심령과 삶을 파괴하는 것을 막지 못한다. 그는 선한 목자 예수님처럼 죄에서 깨끗하게 할 능력이 없다. 그래서 죄가 양들인 성도들의 마음과 삶에 침투한다. 죄는 양들의 심령과 생명을 파괴한다. 삯꾼은 예수님처럼 성령과 말씀으로 살지 않는다. 그는 자기의 욕심을 따라서 산다. 그는 자기 이익만을 추구한다. 그는 성도들을 이용하여 자기 배를 불린다. 예수님처럼 성도들의 마음과 삶에서 죄를 떠나게 하고 거룩하게 살게 하는 사역자가 참 목자다.
예수님은 선한 목자다(14). 예수님은 자기 양을 알고, 양도 선한 목자 예수님을 안다(14). 목자가 자기 양을 모를리가 없다. 예수님은 우리를 안다. 예수님은 우리의 마음, 성품, 생각, 말, 행동, 미래를 아신다. 그것은 부모가 자기 자녀를 아는 것과 같다. 주님의 양인 우리도 예수님을 안다. 우리는 예수님이 나의 구주 하나님의 아들이심을 안다. 우리는 예수님이 나를 위해서 십자가에 달려 죽으신 것을 안다. 우리는 예수님이 나를 구원하시고, 영생을 주시고, 나를 먹이시고, 지키시고, 인도하시는 것을 안다. 우리는 선한 목자이신 주님에게서 듣고, 배우며, 주를 따른다.
예수님은 말한다. ‘주님이 우리를 알고 우리가 주님을 아는 것은 하나님 아버지가 예수님을 알고, 예수님이 하나님 아버지를 아는 것과 같다.’ 하나님 아버지는 아들 예수님을 아신다. 아들 예수님은 아버지 하나님을 잘 아신다. 우리를 아시는 주님은 최선의 길로 우리를 인도하신다. 그래서 우리가 주님의 뜻을 이루는 삶을 살게 한다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 양인 나를 아시는 선한 목자 예수님은 나를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨다. 그래서 내가 생명을 얻고 더 풍성하게 얻게 하셨다. 우리는 그 주님의 은혜와 사랑을 기억해야 한다. 우리는 주님이 주시는 생명의 풍성함을 얻기 위해서 주의 말씀을 매일 읽고, 배우며, 순종해야 한다.
The Good Shepherd (John 10:10-15)
A shepherd and thief are different. They reveal a clear difference in their relationship with the sheep. A thief steals the sheep whereas a shepherd takes care of them. The former does harm and the latter provides benefits. Today’s passage is a teaching about the good shepherd. It talks about three different relationships with the sheep: a thief, a shepherd, and a hired hand. Today’s passage describes the role of the good shepherd. We are able to know the relationship between the good shepherd and the sheep through the Scripture.
Jesus says that the thief steals, kills, and destroys the sheep (v.10). A thief is someone who steals the possession of others. They take away something that is not theirs by force. The thief steals the sheep, killing and destroying them. They do not take care of the sheep they stole. They use them for their own benefit. The thief harms the sheep’s lives and destroys them. Even today there are many thieves. They steal the Lord’s sheep. They use the sheep for their benefit. They harm the lives of the believers, who are the Lord’s sheep.
Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (v.10). Why did Jesus come to this world? He came to give life to the sheep. If Jesus had not come, the sheep would not have lived. The sheep live eternally because of Jesus. Jesus is our life (Colossians 3:4). We who are the Lord’s sheep gain eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. The path to gaining the abundance of life that the Lord gives is in his Word. We, the Lord’s sheep, should eat the pasture of life that our Lord gives. That is, we should learn and obey the word of the Lord. For we gain the living food through the word of God. We must remember that we gain an abundance of spiritual life through the word of the Lord. We must read the word of the Lord, learn it, and obey it. That is the path to gaining an abundance of spiritual life and wellness.
Jesus says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (v.11). It is Jesus who gives life to its fullness. Jesus is the good shepherd. He is good. He is the Son of God, who is good. Jesus came through the Holy Spirit, the spirit of goodness. He lived by the word of God, who is good. His mind, thoughts, conscience, and life are good. Jesus the good shepherd laid down his life for the sheep. Here is the evidence that Jesus is the good shepherd.
Why did Jesus, the good shepherd, die for the sheep? So that his sheep may gain life. To give life to the sheep, Jesus shed blood and died on the cross. He died on the cross to wash away our sins. He cleansed our sins through the blood of the cross. And he saved us from sin and death. Jesus gave up his life so that we, who were dead in sin and transgressions, may gain eternal life. Jesus, who is without sin, bore all our sins and died. Jesus the good shepherd suffered countless hardships, pains, and contempts for the sheep. And he gave us life. We must never forget his immense and amazing grace and love.
Jesus talks about the hired hand (v.12). The hired hand is not the shepherd. Nor are the sheep those of the hired hand. He works by getting paid. When he sees a wolf coming, he runs away, leaving the wolf to kill and take away the sheep. And the sheep scatters. The reason he runs away is because he is a hired hand (v.13). Because he is not the shepherd and the sheep are not his possession, he runs away. They do not protect the sheep or keep them safe. The hired hand is a minister who works for money. He works for his income. Because his goal is earnings, he does not protect the sheep. He has no interest in taking care of the sheep. The hired hand is not able to prevent the world and sin from destroying the believers’ spirits and lives. He does not have the power to cleanse the sin like Jesus the good shepherd. Therefore, sin penetrates the minds and lives of the believers. Sin destroys the sheep’s spirits and lives. The hired hand does not live by the Holy Spirit or the word of God like Jesus. They live according to their desires. They pursue their own benefits. They use the believers to satisfy themselves. But the true minister is one who, just like Jesus, leads the believers away from the life of sin into a holy life.
Jesus is the good shepherd (v.14). Jesus knows his sheep, and the sheep know Jesus the good shepherd (v.14). There is no way that the shepherd will not know his sheep. Jesus knows us. He knows our minds, characters, thoughts, speech, actions, and future. It is the same as the parents knowing their children. We his sheep also know Jesus. We know that Jesus is my Savior, the Son of God. We know that Jesus died on the cross for us. We know that Jesus saves us, gives us eternal life, feeds us, protects us, and leads us. We listen to the Lord, the good shepherd, learn from him, and follow him.
Jesus says that he knows us and we know him, just as the Father knows Jesus and Jesus knows the Father. Father God knows his Son Jesus. And Jesus the Son knows the Father well. Our Lord, who knows us, will lead us to the way that is best for us. And he makes us live a life in fulfillment of his will. We must remember–Jesus the good shepherd, who knows us the sheep, gave up his life for us. And he enabled us to gain life and have it to the full. We must remember his grace and love. To receive the fullness of life that the Lord gives, we must read the Bible daily, learning and obeying it.
