모세가 지팡이를 든 손을 바다 위로 내 밀었다. 그 때에 홍해 바다가 갈라졌다. 그래서 이스라엘 백성들이 바다 가운데를 지나갔다. 그것은 모세의 능력이 아니다. 모세는 하나님의 말씀에 순종했다. 하나님은 모세를 통하여 자기 권능을 나타냈다. 오늘 본문 성경은 예수님의 권세를 말한다. 예수님은 선한 목자로서 양을 위해 목숨을 버리셨다. 예수님은 그 십자가의 죽음의 권세를 설명하신다. 우리는 십자가의 죽음으로 말미암은 예수님의 권세를 알 수 있다.
예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도 주님이시다. 예수님은 선한 목자이시다. 하나님의 아들 그리스도요 구주이신 예수님의 사명이 있다. 선한 목자로서 예수님의 사명이 있다. 그것은 양을 살리는 것이다. 주님은 양을 살리기 위해서 자기 목숨을 버리셨다. 예수님이 양을 위해서 목숨을 버리셨다는 의미는 무엇인가? 먼저는 예수님이 성경대로 행하셨다는 것이다. 예수님이 목숨을 버리신 것은 순종을 의미한다. 예수님의 죽으심은 하나님의 말씀을 순종하신 것이다. 예수님은 나를 위해 죽기까지 순종하셨다. 주님은 나의 죄를 씻기 위해서 죽으셨다.
우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 죽기까지 순종하신 예수님처럼 살아야 한다. 주의 말씀의 순종은 믿음의 온전함과 진실함을 낳는다. 순종이 없는 믿음은 주님과 말씀을 떠난 것이다. 그런 믿음은 기초, 견고함, 성장, 열매도 없다. 우리의 믿음이 주님을 본받아서 열매를 맺고, 견고하게 되기 위해서는 순종이 필수다. 우리는 또한 나를 위해 죽기까지 순종하신 예수님을 기억해야 한다. 예수님처럼 사는 길은 순종에 있다.
양을 위해 목숨을 버리신 예수님은 하나님의 뜻을 성취하셨다. 하나님의 뜻은 양의 죄를 깨끗하게 하고 영생을 얻게 하는 것이다. 예수님은 죄로 인하여 죽은 내가 영생을 얻기 위하여 목숨을 버리셨다. 예수님은 목숨을 버리셔서 속죄 사역을 완성하셨다. 그래서 주님은 하나님의 뜻을 십자가에서 이루셨다. 우리가 예수님처럼 주님의 뜻을 이루기 위해서는 믿음의 순종이 있어야 한다. 주님의 뜻은 주의 말씀에 있기 때문이다. 예수님의 십자가의 죽음은 우리를 위한 고난, 고통, 희생, 사랑, 선함, 섬김 그리고 헌신을 의미한다. 하나님의 사랑과 자비와 선하심이 예수님의 십자가의 죽음을 통해서 나타났다. 우리는 예수님의 십자가의 죽음을 잊어서는 안 된다. 주님의 사랑과 고난을 마음 깊이 새겨야 한다. 우리는 하나님의 사랑 안에서 주님을 사랑하고 기쁘시게 해야 한다. 그것은 곧 믿음의 순종이다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “내가 내 목숨을 버리는 것은 그것을 다시 얻기 위함이니 이로 말미암아 아버지께서 나를 사랑하시느니라”(17). 예수님은 양을 위하여 십자가에서 목숨을 버리셨다. 예수님은 죽은 후 3일만에 다시 살아 나셨다. 예수님은 죽음의 권세를 이기시고 부활하셨다. 예수님은 부활의 생명을 얻으셨다. 예수님의 부활은 곧 우리의 부활을 의미한다. 예수님의 부활이 없다면 우리의 부활도 없다. 선한 목자인 예수님은 자기 양에게 부활의 생명, 곧 영원한 생명을 얻기 위하여 죽으셨다.
하나님은 목숨까지 버리신 예수님을 사랑하셨다. 하나님은 아버지의 말씀을 죽기까지 순종하신 아들을 사랑하셨다. 우리가 주님의 사랑을 받는 길은 역시 순종이다. 사람은 자기 말을 잘 들어 주는 사람을 좋아한다. 우리가 예수님처럼 주의 계명을 듣고 순종할 때에 주님은 우리를 사랑하신다(요 15:10). 예수님의 사랑을 받는 길이 여기에 있다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “이를 내게서 빼앗는 자가 있는 것이 아니라 내가 스스로 버리노라 나는 버릴 권세도 있고 다시 얻을 권세도 있으니 이 계명은 내 아버지에게서 받았노라”(18). 예수님은 하나님의 아들이시다. 예수님은 하나님으로서 신성을 갖고 계신다. 예수님은 만물 위에 계시고, 만물의 머리이시다. 예수님은 만 왕의 왕이요, 만 주의 주이다. 모든 권세의 머리이시다. 이러한 예수님에게서 목숨을 빼았을 존재는 없다. 예수님은 자기 목숨을 스스로 버리셨다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 예수님의 십자가에 죽음은 예수님의 목숨을 강제로 빼앗기는 것이다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께 순종하여 스스로 버리신 것이다. 예수님은 자기 목숨을 버릴 권세도 있고, 다시 얻을 권세도 있다.
예수님은 모든 권세의 주님이시다. 예수님의 권세는 하나님 아버지께서 주셨다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께서 주신 권세로 사셨다. 우리도 주님의 권세로 산다. 우리는 주님이 주시는 십자가와 부활의 권세로 산다. 우리는 주님이 주시는 의, 거룩함, 선함, 사랑, 생명, 성령, 말씀의 권세로 산다. 주님의 권세는 주의 말씀 가운데 있다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 믿음으로 순종해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 주님이 주시는 권능으로 살아야 한다.
Authority of Jesus (John 10:16-18)
Moses stretched out his staff toward the Red Sea. The sea parted, and the Israelites crossed the sea on dry ground. This was not done by Moses’ authority. Moses only obeyed God’s command. God displayed his authority through Moses. Today’s passage talks about the authority of Jesus. Jesus laid down his life as the good shepherd. He explains the authority of death on the cross. So we can understand the authority of Jesus from his death on the cross.
Jesus is Christ the Lord, the Son of God. Jesus is the good shepherd. Jesus, the Son of God and Christ the Savior, has a calling. He has a mission as the good shepherd. It is to give life to the sheep. Our Lord gave up his life to give life to his sheep. What does Jesus giving up his life for the sheep signify? First, Jesus lived according to the Scripture. Jesus giving up his life shows obedience. The death of Jesus is obedience to the word of God. Jesus obeyed to death on the cross for us. He died to wash our sins away.
We must remember that we should live like Jesus who was obedient to death. Obedience to the word of the Lord leads to perfection and genuineness of faith. Faith without obedience is far from Jesus and the word of God. Such faith has no foundation, stability, growth, or fruit. Our faith bears fruit by following Jesus’ example. For our faith to stand firm, obedience is a must. We also must remember Jesus, who obeyed to death for us. Obedience is the way to live like Jesus.
Jesus who gave up his life for the sheep accomplished God’s will. God’s will is to cleanse the sins of the sheep that they may have eternal life. Jesus gave up his life so that we, who died due to sin, may be given eternal life. By giving up his life, Jesus completed the ministry of forgiveness. And he fulfilled God’s will on the cross. To fulfill the Lord’s will just like Jesus, there should be obedience of faith. For the Lord’s will is in his word. Jesus’ death on the cross signifies trial, pain, sacrifice, love, goodness, service, and dedication. God’s love, compassion, and goodness were revealed through Jesus’ death on the cross. We must never forget Jesus’ death on the cross. We must engrave the Lord’s love and sufferings deeply on our heart. We must love and please the Lord in the love of God. That is, we must obey by faith.
Jesus says, “The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life–only to take it up again” (v.17). Jesus laid down his life on the cross for the sheep. And in 3 days, he was raised to life. Jesus overcame the power of death and was raised to life. He gained the life of resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus signifies our resurrection. Without his resurrection, we also do not have resurrection. Jesus, the good shepherd, died to give the life of resurrection–the eternal life–to his sheep.
God loved Jesus, who laid down his life. God loved his Son who obeyed even to death. The way for us to receive Jesus’ love is obedience. People like those who listen to them. Likewise, when we listen to the Lord’s commands and obey them, he loves us (John 15:10). This is the path to receive Jesus’ love.
Jesus says, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father” (v.18). Jesus is the Son of God. He has divinity as God. Jesus is above all and is the head of all. He is King of kings and Lord of lords. He is Head of all authorities. And there is no one who can take away Jesus’ life. He lays down his life of his own accord. We must remember that Jesus died on the cross in obedience to God and laid it down voluntarily, not because someone took his life from him. He has the authority to lay down his life and to take it up again.
Jesus is the Lord of all authorities. The Father gave Jesus the authority. Jesus lived by the authority granted by God. We also live by the authority of our Lord. We live by the authority of the cross and resurrection, which the Lord grants us. We live by the authority of righteousness, holiness, goodness, love, life, Holy Spirit, and the word of God. Jesus’ authority is in his word. Thus, we must obey his word by faith, thereby living with the authority he gives us.
