어떤 교수님이 학생들을 가르치고 있었다. 한 학생이 일어나 교수님의 의견에 동의할 수 없다고 반박했다. 그러면서 교수님과 학생의 논쟁이 계속되었다. 결국 교수님은 그 학생에게 ‘나는 학생을 가르칠 수 없네. 학생은 더 이상 내 제자가 아니네’라고 말했다. 오늘 읽은 본문은 예수님의 양이 어떤 사람인지 가르쳐 준다. 예수님은 자기 양을 구별하는 방법을 제시한다.
유대인의 절기인 수전절이 다가왔다. 그 때는 겨울이었다. 수전절은 이방인에 의해서 더럽혀진 성전을 재건한 것을 기념하는 절기다. 유대인들은 하나님의 성전을 성결하게 하여 바쳐진 것을 기념하면서 8일 동안 절기를 지켰다.
예수님은 수전절에 성전에 있는 솔로몬 행각에서 걸으셨다. 우리는 성전에서 걸으시는 예수님이 누구인지 바르게 알아야 한다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주이시다. 예수님은 만유의 주님이시다. 예수님은 성전보다 크신 분이시다. 예수님이 성전에 계실 때에 유대인들이 에워싸면서 질문한다. 물론 여기서 말하는 유대인들은 예수님을 구주로 믿지 않는 사람들이다. 그들은 하나님이 보내신다고 약속하신 메시야가 왔지만 믿지 않았다. 그들은 예수님께 ‘언제까지 우리 마음을 의혹하려고 합니까. 그리스도라면 명확하게 말해 주십시요’(24)라고 질문한다.
사실 유대인들의 이러한 질문은 쓸모없다. 그들은 하지 않아도 될 질문을 하고 있다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 자신이 그리스도라는 것을 명확하게 보여 주셨기 때문이다. 그들은 불신앙에 빠져 있다. 그들은 예수님을 그리스도 구주로 믿지 않는 때문에 이러한 질문을 하고 있다. 지금도 예수님을 믿지 않는 사람들은 무의미한 질문을 한다. 그들이 예수님을 믿었다면, 그러한 질문이 얼마나 쓸모 없는지를 알게 된다. 우리가 상황을 제대로 파악하지 않고, 잘 모르면서 하는 질문은 적절하지 못하고 수치스럽다는 것을 안다. 주 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿는 우리는 불신자들과 같은 질문은 결코 하지 않는다. 우리는 그러한 질문은 할 필요가 없다고 생각하기 때문이다. 우리는 ‘예수님이 나의 구주시다’라고 고백한다. 우리는 예수님이 ‘참으로 하나님의 아들 그리스도입니까’라고 묻지 않는다.
예수님은 유대인들에게 대답한다. “내가 이미 너희에게 말했다. 하지만 너희가 믿지 않았다”(25). 예수님은 앞에서 유대인들에게 자신이 그리스도요 하나님의 아들이라는 것을 말씀했다. 예수님은 가르침을 통해서 자신이 하나님이 보내신 메시야라고 증거했다. 유대인들은 그것을 듣고도 믿지 않았다. 오늘도 예수님을 말씀을 듣고도 믿지 않는 사람들이 많다. 그들은 예수님이 구주이심을 명확하게 말하는 성경을 믿지 않는다. 심지어 교회 다니는 사람들 중에도 믿기를 거부하는 사람들이 있다. 예수님의 말씀을 믿지 않는 사람들은 예수님이 하나님의 아들 구주이심을 인정하지 않는다. 우리가 예수님의 가르침을 믿을 때에, 예수님이 그리스도 구주이심을 알게 된다. 우리는 예수님의 모든 가르침을 믿고 순종해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 믿음에 굳게 서야 한다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “내가 내 아버지의 이름으로 행하는 일들이 나를 증거한다”(25). 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주이신 예수님께서 하신 일은 예수님을 증거한다. 예수님은 자신이 행하신 일을 통해서 자신이 그리스도이심을 증거했다. 예수님은 성경대로 오시고, 성경대로 사시고, 성경대로 행하셨다. 예수님은 많은 병자를 고치셨다. 예수님은 중풍병자, 맹인, 듣지 못하고 말 못하는 자, 장애인, 각종 병자를 고치셨다. 예수님은 죽은 자를 살리셨다. 예수님은 물로 포도주 만드시고, 바람과 파도를 잔잔하게 하시고, 물 위를 걸으셨다. 이러한 예수님의 사역과 능력은 예수님이 메시아임을 확실히 증거했다. 하지만 유대인들은 보고도 믿지 않았다. 그들의 불신앙은 결국 예수님을 죽음에 이르게 했다. 우리는 예수님의 모든 말씀과 행하심을 믿는다. 우리는 믿음으로 예수님이 그리스도 하나님의 아들이라고 고백한다. 우리는 예수님을 섬기고 경배하고 순종한다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “너희가 내 양이 아니므로 믿지 않는다”(26). 우리는 기억해야 한다. 예수님의 양은 반드시 예수님을 믿는다. 주님의 양이라는 증거는 선한 목자 예수님을 구주로 믿는 것이다. 예수님을 구주로 믿지 않는 사람은 주님의 양이 아니라는 증거다. 그러므로 우리가 주님의 양이라는 확실한 증거는 믿음이다. 예수님은 말씀한다. “내 양은 내 음성을 듣고, 나는 그들을 알며, 그들은 나를 따른다”(27). 양은 목자의 음성을 듣고 따른다. 이것이 주님의 양이라는 증거다. 예수님이 나의 목자라면, 나는 예수님의 양으로서 주님의 음성을 듣고 따른다. 예수님 말씀을 듣고 순종하는 것은 중요하다. 그것은 내가 주의 양이냐 혹은 주의 양이 아니냐의 문제다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 사모하고, 기뻐하고, 귀히 여기고, 순종하는 데서 주님의 양이라는 증거가 있다. 그래서 우리는 예수님의 교훈과 계명을 순종해야 한다. 우리는 예수님의 가르침대로 하나님과 이웃 그리고 형제를 사랑해야 한다. 우리는 우리의 삶에서 주님의 양이라는 증거를 나타내야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 우리 자신이 주님의 양이라는 증거가 없기 때문이다.
The Lord’s Sheep (John 10:22-27)
A professor was teaching his students. One student stood up and refuted, saying that he does not agree. And there was a debate between the professor and the student. Eventually, the professor said to the student, “I cannot teach you. You are no longer my student.” Today’s passage teaches us who Jesus’ sheep are. Jesus tells us the way to distinguish his sheep from those that are not his sheep.
The Festival of Dedication, a Jewish holiday, approached. It was winter. This holiday celebrates the rebuilding of the temple that had been desecrated by the gentiles. The Jews kept the holiday for eight days, sanctifying the temple and dedicating articles.
On the Festival of Dedication, Jesus was walking in Solomon’s Colonnade inside the temple. We must know correctly who Jesus is, who is walking in the temple. Jesus is Christ the Savior, the Son of God. He is the Lord of all. He is bigger than the temple. When Jesus was in the temple, the Jews surrounded him and asked him questions. The Jews here refer to those who did not believe that Jesus is the Savior. The Messiah, whom God promised to send, has come but they did not believe. They said, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly” (v.24).
These questions that the Jews are asking are meaningless. In other words, they are asking questions that they need not ask, because Jesus has shown them clearly that he is the Messiah. They have fallen into unbelief. They are asking these questions because they do not believe Jesus as Christ the Savior. Even today people who do not believe ask meaningless questions. If they had believed Jesus, they would know that they are asking meaningless questions. We feel shame when we realize that the questions we ask without fully understanding the situation or without knowing very well are inappropriate. We who believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior do not ask questions that unbelievers ask, because we believe that there is no need to ask such questions. We confess that “Jesus is my Savior.” So we do not ask Jesus, “Are you truly Christ the Son of God?”
Jesus answers the Jews, “I did tell you, but you do not believe” (v.25). Jesus said in front of the Jews that he is Christ the Son of God. He testified through his teaching that he is the Messiah, the One sent by God. The Jews heard it but did not believe it. Even today there are many people who hear the words of Jesus but do not believe. They do not believe in the Bible that clearly says Jesus is the Savior. There are even people who go to church but refuse to believe. People who do not believe in the words of Jesus do not acknowledge that Jesus is the Savior, the Son of God. It is when we believe Jesus’ teaching that we come to know that he is Christ the Savior. We must believe and obey all of Jesus’ teaching and stand firmly on faith.
Jesus says, “The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me” (v.25). The works of Jesus, the Son of God and Christ the Savior, testify about him. Jesus testified about himself, that he is Christ, through his works. He came to the world according to the Scripture and lived according to the Scripture. He healed many sick people. He healed the paralyzed, the blind, the hard of hearing and mute, and people of various disabilities and diseases. Jesus raised the dead to life. He turned water into wine, calmed the storm and waves, and walked on water. These ministries and power of Jesus clearly testified that he is the Messiah. However, the Jews saw but still did not believe. And their unbelief led to executing Jesus. We believe in all the words of Jesus and his works. By faith, we confess that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God. We serve, worship, and obey him.
Jesus says, “You do not believe because you are not my sheep” (v.26). We must remember–Jesus’ sheep believe in him. The proof that we are his sheep is that we believe him, the Good Shepherd, as Christ the Lord. Not believing in Jesus as the Savior is proof that they are not his sheep. Therefore, a sure evidence that we are his sheep is faith. Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me” (v.27). The sheep listen to the shepherd’s voice and follow him. This is proof that we are his sheep. If Jesus is our shepherd, we listen to his voice and follow him as Jesus’ sheep. Listening to Jesus and obeying him is important. It is a matter of whether we are his sheep or not. When we delight in the words of Jesus, value his words, and obey his words, we have evidence that we are the Lord’s sheep. Therefore, we must obey Jesus’ teaching and commands. We must love God, our neighbors, and our brothers and sisters in Christ. We must testify through our lives that we are Jesus’ sheep. Otherwise, we would not have any evidence that we are his sheep.
