보험은 문제가 발생할 때에 해결의 길이 된다. 자동차 보험은 사고가 날 때에 해결의 방법이 된다. 우리의 구원의 확실한 보장의 길이 있다. 우리의 구원의 안전하고 확고한 보장의 길은 무엇인가? 오늘 성경 본문은 그것을 말한다.
예수님은 앞에서 “내 양은 내 음성을 듣고 나는 그들을 알며 그들은 나를 따르느니라”(27)라고 말씀하셨다. 내가 주님의 양인 증거는 이것이다. 주의 말씀을 듣고 순종하는 것이다. 예수님은 자기 양에게 영생을 주신다(28). 예수님은 생명이시다. 예수님 외에는 생명이 없다. 우리는 영생을 얻기 위해서 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿는다. 우리의 목자 되시는 예수님은 자기 양에게 영원한 생명을 줄 수 있다. 예수님은 우리의 구원이시다. 다른 구원자는 없다(행 4:12). 우리는 구원을 얻기 위해서 주 예수를 구주로 믿는다. 우리가 구원과 영생을 얻기 위해서는 죄와 사망의 권세에서 해방되어야 한다. 주 예수님은 십자가와 부활을 통해서 죄와 죽음의 권세를 이기셨다. 그래서 예수님은 주를 믿는 우리를 죄와 사망에서 건지셨다. 주님은 십자가에서 흘린 피로 우리 죄를 씻으셨다. 주님은 부활하심으로 우리가 죽음에서 벗어나 영원히 살게 하셨다. 주님은 믿는 자에게 성령을 주셔서 거듭나게 하신다. 성령으로 거듭난 사람은 천국에 들어 갈 수 있다. 그는 주님이 주시는 영생이 있기 때문이다.
영생은 십자가와 부활의 주님을 믿는 사람에게 주어진다. 영생은 죽음의 권세에서 해방되었다는 것을 의미한다. 영생은 하나님의 자녀가 되었다는 증거다. 하나님의 자녀는 천국에서 하나님 아버지와 함께 영원히 산다. 그것은 영생이 있을 때에 가능하다. 그래서 영생은 하늘에 속한 생명이다. 우리가 하늘 곧 천국에서 살려면 하늘에 속한 생명이 필요하다. 땅에 속한 생명은 천국에 적합하지 않다. 그 생명으로는 천국에서 살 수 없다. 우리가 주님이 주시는 영생을 얻은 것은 천국에서 살기 위해서다.
예수님이 주시는 영생을 얻은 우리에게는 멸망이 없다(28). 멸망은 영생이 없는 사람에게 해당한다. 곧 믿지 않고 죄 가운데 사는 사람은 멸망한다. 예수님은 영생을 얻은 자기 양을 빼앗기지 않는다(28). 주님에게서 양을 빼앗을 수 있는 존재는 없다. 왜냐하면 주님보다 더 큰 힘과 능력을 가진 존재는 없기 때문이다. 내가 가장 큰 힘을 소유하고 있다면, 나는 내 것을 빼앗기지 않는다. 주님은 만유의 주님이시다. 주님은 전능의 주님이시다. 주님은 모든 권세의 주님이시다. 그래서 주님은 자기 양의 구원을 보장한다. 주님은 안전하게 자기 양을 지킨다. 구원의 확실한 보장이 여기에 있다. 구원의 안전성은 나에게 있지 않다. 나의 목자이신 주님이 확실하고, 안전하고, 견고하게 구원을 보장한다. 주님은 자기 양을 보호하고 돌본다. 그래서 주님은 자기 양을 해치지 못하게 한다. 주님은 우리가 세상에서 살 때에 모든 악한 세력으로부터 지키신다. 주님은 자기 양을 절대로 빼앗기지 않는다. 우리의 구원은 주님의 보호 아래서 안전하다. 주님은 자기의 영과 말씀으로 자기 양을 지키신다. 주님은 자기 양의 생명과 마음과 생각과 삶과 환경을 영원히 지키신다(시 121:3-8). 우리의 생명과 구원은 주님이 보장해 주신다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “그들을 주신 내 아버지는 만물보다 크시매 아무도 아버지의 손에서 빼앗을 수 없느니라”(29). 예수님은 선한 목자로서 자기 양을 안전하게 지키신다. 또한 하나님 아버지도 자기 자녀를 지키신다. 자녀는 부모에게 자기 목숨과 같은 존재다. 부모는 자녀를 사랑하고, 아끼고, 보호해 주기를 원한다. 하나님은 주 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿는 우리를 자기 자녀로 삼으셨다. 우리는 주님 예수의 소유이면서 하나님 아버지의 소유이다. 하나님은 아들 예수님에게 우리를 주셨다. 하나님 아버지는 만물보다 크신 분이시다. 예수 그리스도의 아버지는 창조, 전능, 만유의 하나님이다. 만물을 지으신 하나님은 만물보다 크다. 그는 모든 권능과 권위의 하나님이다. 하나님은 사랑과 긍휼과 자비의 아버지다. 하나님은 아들 예수님과 함께 우리를 귀하게 여기시고 지키신다. 예수님은 자기 양으로서, 하나님 아버지는 자기 자녀로서 우리를 보호해 주신다.
하나님 아버지는 악한 자, 세상, 죄, 모든 대적으로부터 우리를 지켜 주신다. 하나님은 자기 자녀를 해치지 못하도록 지키신다. 구원은 주님과 하나님 아버지의 은혜와 사랑과 권능 안에서 안전하다. 우리의 삶은 하나님 아버지와 주님의 영원한 보호를 받는다. 예수님은 아버지와 자신은 하나라고 말씀한다(30). 성부와 성자는 하나다. 그래서 성경은 삼위일체 하나님을 말한다. 예수님은 아버지 안에, 아버지는 예수님 안에 계신다. 아들의 것은 아버지의 것이고, 아버지의 것은 아들의 것이다. 성자와 성부는 우리를 안전하게 보호한다. 구원의 안전한 보장이 여기 있다.
Assurance of Salvation (John 10:28-30)
Insurance warrants financial assistance for potential problems. If car accidents occur, we can rely on insurance to pay for fees incurred. Similarly, there is a path that warrants our salvation. What is the safe, firm, and guaranteed way to our salvation? Today’s passage talks about it.
Jesus said previously that “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (v.27). This is the evidence that we are his sheep–to hear his word and obey it. Jesus grants eternal life to his sheep (v.28). Jesus is the life. There is no life apart from Jesus. We believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior to gain eternal life. Jesus, who is our shepherd, can grant eternal life to his sheep. Jesus is our salvation. There is no other Savior (Acts 4:12). We believe in our Lord Jesus as the Savior to be saved. To receive salvation and eternal life, we must be liberated from the power of sin and death. Our Lord Jesus overcame the power of sin and death through the cross and the resurrection. And so he delivered the believers from sin and death. The Lord washed our sins away through the blood shed on the cross. The Lord made us escape death and live eternally through resurrection. He gives the Holy Spirit to the believers and makes us be born again. Those who are born again through the Holy Spirit can enter the kingdom of God because they have the eternal life granted by the Lord.
Eternal life is given to those who believe in the Lord who resurrected. It signifies liberation from the power of death. It is evidence that we became God’s children. God’s children live with God the Father forever. This is possible when we have eternal life. Therefore, eternal life is life that is of heaven. To live in heaven, that is, the kingdom of God, we need life that is of heaven. Life on earth is not fitting in heaven. We cannot live in the kingdom of heaven with such life. We receive eternal life that the Lord grants that we may live in the kingdom of God.
There is no destruction for us who have received eternal life granted by Jesus (v.28). Destruction applies to those who do not have eternal life. That is, those who do not believe and live in sin will perish. Jesus does not allow his sheep who have received eternal life to be snatched away (v.28). There is no one who can snatch the sheep away from Jesus because there is nothing that has more strength and power than our Lord Jesus. When I have the greatest strength, no one can snatch my things from me. Jesus is the Lord of All. He is the Lord Almighty. He is the Lord of all power. Therefore, he can guarantee salvation for his sheep. Jesus protects his sheep. The stability of salvation is not with us. Only our Lord, who is our shepherd, assuredly, safely, and firmly guarantees salvation. The Lord protects and cares for his sheep. And he does not allow his sheep to be harmed. As we live in this world, the Lord protects us from all evil power. He never allows his sheep to be snatched away. Our salvation is safe under the protection of the Lord. The Lord watches over his sheep with his Spirit and Word. He watches over the life, heart, thoughts, and environment of his sheep forever (Psalm 121:3-8). The Lord guarantees our lives and deliverance.
Jesus says, “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (v.29). As the good shepherd, Jesus keeps his sheep safe. Moreover, the Father also protects his children. Children are like their own lives to their parents. Parents want to love, value, and protect their children. God made us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior to be his children. We are Jesus’ possession as well as God’s. God gave his Son Jesus to us. The Father is bigger than all things. He is the God of all power and authority. God is the Father of love, mercy, and compassion. Jesus Christ is the Father of creation, might, and all things. God and his Son Jesus consider us valuable and watch over us. Jesus protects us as his sheep and God protects us as his children.
God keeps us safe from the evil one, the world, sin, and all oppositions. God protects his children from all harm. Salvation is safety in the grace, love, and power of the Lord and the Father. Our lives receive eternal protection of the Father and the Lord Jesus. Jesus says that the Father and he are one (v.30). God the Father and God the Son are one. Thus, the Bible talks about Trinity. Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in Jesus. What belongs to the Son belongs to the Father and what belongs to the Father belongs to the Son. God the Father and God the Son keep us safe. That is where lies the secure assurance of salvation.
