사람들은 부모로부터 태어난다. 부모에게서 태어난 사람이 자녀다. 자녀는 부모를 전제한다. 그래서 자녀에게는 아버지가 있다. 이삭의 아버지는 아브라함이다. 솔로몬은 다윗의 아들이다. 우리 역시 아버지가 있다. 우리는 아버지의 아들이다. 예수님도 아버지가 있다. 오늘 본문 성경은 그것을 말한다.
유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 믿지 않았다. 그들은 예수님을 돌로 치려고 한다. 이것은 주님을 대적하는 악한 행위다. 사람이 누군가를 미워할 때, 상대에게 해를 끼친다. 사울 왕은 다윗을 시기하고 미워했다. 그는 다윗에게 창을 던져서 죽이려고 했다. 70대 남편이 아내와 다투다가 아내에게 해를 입힌다. 성경은 말한다. “미움은 다툼을 일으키나 사랑은 많은 허물을 덮어준다”(잠 10:12). 우리가 누군가를 사랑하면 그 사람의 잘못을 용서한다. 유대인들은 예수님에게 돌을 던져서 치려고 한다. 그들은 예수님을 믿지 않고 사랑하지 않았기 때문이다. 우리는 주님을 믿고 사랑한다. 그래서 우리는 주님을 섬기고, 경배하고, 순종한다.
예수님은 유대인들에게 대답하신다. “내가 아버지로 말미암아 여러 가지 선한 일을 너희에게 보였거니와 그 중에 어떤 일로 나를 돌로 치려 하느냐”(32). 예수님의 모든 말과 행위 그리고 사역은 하나님 아버지의 이름으로 하신 것이다. 예수님은 선하시고 진실하신 사랑의 아버지에게 순종했다. 예수님은 자기의 생각과 뜻대로 하지 않았다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지께서 하라고 하신 일을 하셨다. 예수님의 일은 모두가 선하다. 그것은 선하신 하나님의 말씀과 뜻대로 하셨기 때문이다. 예수님의 마음, 생각, 양심, 인격과 삶은 온전히 선하다. 선하신 주님은 우리에게 선을 배풀어 주셔서 우리를 죄와 사망에서 구원하셨다. 주님은 선한 빛을 세상에 비추셨다. 선하신 주님을 미워하고 죽이려고 하는 것은 큰 죄다. 선한 사람을 미워하는 사람은 자신이 선하지 않다는 것을 증명한다. 예수님이 선을 행한 것 때문에 돌로 치려는 것은 악한 것이다. 우리는 선하신 주님처럼 선을 행해야 한다. 우리는 이웃과 형제와 원수를 사랑해야 한다. 그래서 우리는 세상의 빛이 되어야 한다.
예수님을 믿지 않고 박해하는 유대인들은 대답한다. “선한 일로 말미암아 우리가 너를 돌로 치려는 것이 아니라 신성모독으로 인함이니 네가 사람이 되어 자칭 하나님이라 함이로다”(33). 유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 이해하지 못했다. 그 이유는 그들의 불신앙 때문이다. 그들은 예수님께서 자기들의 메시야 구주로 오신 것을 믿지 않았다. 그 결과 주님의 모든 말씀과 사역을 부인했다. 그들의 예수님에 관한 모든 관점과 지식은 잘못된 것이다. 우리는 예수님을 믿지 않으면 예수님을 바르게 알지 못한다는 것을 기억해야 한다. 주를 믿지 않으면 성경에 대한 지식도 바르지 못하게 된다. 우리는 믿을 때에, 성경과 예수님을 바르게 알게 된다. 유대인들이 예수님의 말씀을 그대로 믿었다면, 지금과 같은 그런 말과 행동을 하지 않았을 것이다. 불신앙은 죄와 함께 자신을 파멸로 인도한다. 믿음은 우리를 의와 구원으로 인도한다.
예수님이 사람으로 오시지 않았다면 우리는 구원받지 못한다. 왜냐하면 거기에는 속죄함이 없기 때문이다. 사람으로 오신 예수님의 피가 우리 죄를 깨끗하게 한다. 사람으로 오신 예수님은 하나님의 아들이시다. 그래서 예수님은 대답하신다. “너희 율법에 기록된 바 내가 너희를 신이라 하였노라 하지 않았느냐 성경은 폐하지 못하나니 하나님의 말씀을 받은 사람들을 신이라 하였거늘” 하나님의 말씀을 받아서 전한 사람들을 신이라고 성경은 말한다(시 82:6). 성경은 폐할 수없다. 성경은 영원한 진리다. 우리는 신구약 성경은 하나님의 말씀이요 진리임을 믿는다.
예수님은 말씀한다. “하물며 아버지께서 거룩하게 하셔서 세상에 보내신 자가 나는 하나님의 아들이라 하는 것으로 너희가 어찌 신성모독이라 하느냐”(35-36). 하나님은 성경의 약속대로 자기 아들을 세상에 보내셨다. 거룩하신 하나님은 아들 예수님을 성령으로 세상에 보내셨다. 하나님 아버지께서 보내서 오신 예수님이 하나님의 아들이라고 말하는 것은 지극히 당연하다. 하나님의 아들이 아닌 사람의 아들이라고 주장하는 것이 신성모독이다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들로 오셨다. 그래서 예수님은 자기가 하나님의 아들이라고 말씀하신다. 우리는 그렇게 믿고 고백한다. 하나님은 말씀하셨다. “이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자라”(마 3:17). 예수님은 하나님 아버지가 사랑하고 기뻐하는 아들이다. 예수님은 아버지를 영화롭게 하고 기쁘게 하셨다.
우리는 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님의 자녀가 되었다. 그래서 우리는 하나님을 아버지라고 부른다. 우리가 하나님을 아버지라고 부르는 것은 잘못 된 것이 아니다. 그것은 당연하다. 예수님이 하나님의 아들이라고 주장하는 것은 영원한 진실이다. 우리는 하나님 아버지의 사랑하는 자녀로서 하나님을 기쁘시게 해야 한다. 우리는 하나님 아버지의 사랑 받는 자녀로서 예수님처럼 순종해야 한다. 순종은 하나님 아버지를 기쁘시게 하는 지름길이다.
The Son of God (John 10:31-36)
People are born from their parents. They are the parents’ children. The existence of a child implies the existence of parents. So a child has a father. Isaac’s father was Abraham. Solomon’s father was David. We also have a father. We are children of our fathers. Jesus also has a father. Today’s passage talks about this.
The Jews heard the word of Jesus but did not believe. They tried to stone Jesus. This is a wicked conduct that opposes God. When a person hates someone, they try to inflict harm on them. King Saul was jealous of David and hated him. He tried to kill David by aiming a spear at him. A husband in his seventies got into an argument with his wife and tried to harm her. The Scripture says, “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs” (Proverbs 10:12). When we love someone, we forgive their mistakes. The Jews tried to stone Jesus. They did not believe in nor love Jesus. We, however, must believe in the Lord and love him. Thereby, we must serve the Lord, worship and obey him.
Jesus answered the Jews, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” (v32). Jesus’ every word, action, and ministry is done by the Name of God the Father. Jesus obeyed the Father of love, goodness and truth. Jesus did not do anything according to his own thoughts or will. Jesus only did the things God the Father told him to do. The work of Jesus is good because he did them according to the will of the good Word of God. The mind, thought, conscience, character and life of Jesus are perfectly good. The good Lord did good to us and saved us from sin and death. The Lord shone the light of goodness to the world. Hating and trying to kill the Lord of goodness is a great sin. Hating someone who is good proves that they themselves are not good. Trying to stone Jesus for doing good is evil. We must do good like the Lord of goodness. We must love our neighbors, brothers and enemies. We must become the light of the world.
The Jews who persecuted Jesus said, “We are not stoning you for any good work, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (v33). The Jews did not understand the words of Jesus because they did not believe. They did not believe that Jesus came as the Messiah. As a result, they denied the words and ministry of Jesus. Their perspective of Jesus is wrong. We must remember that if we don’t believe in Jesus, then we cannot understand Jesus properly. If we do not believe in the Lord, our knowledge of the Scriptures would also be wrong. It is only when we believe that we can properly know the Scripture and Jesus. If the Jews had believed in the words of Jesus, they would not have persecuted Jesus. Unbelief leads people to sin and destruction. In contrast, faith leads us to righteousness and salvation.
If Jesus had not come to the world as a human, we would not have been saved. This is because there would not have been forgiveness of sin. The blood of Jesus who came as a man cleanses our sin. Jesus who came as a man is the Son of God. Jesus says, “If he called them gods to whom the word of God came–and Scripture cannot be set aside” (v35). The Bible says that those who receive and spread the Word of God are gods (Psalm 82:6). The Bible cannot be abolished. It is eternal truth. We believe that the Old and New Testaments of the Bible are the Word of God and the truth.
Jesus says, “What about the one whom the Father set apart has his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?” (v36). God sent His Son to the world as He promised in the Scripture. Holy God sent his Son Jesus by the Holy Spirit. To call Jesus, whom God sent, as the Son of God is an obvious thing. It would rather be a blasphemy to deny that Jesus is the Son of God. We believe and confess that Jesus is the Son of God. God said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Jesus is the Son of God that God loves and is pleased with. Jesus glorified and pleased God.
We have become children of God by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, we call God our Father. It is not wrong for us to call God our Father. Jesus claiming that God is his Father is an eternal truth. As beloved children of God, we must live to please God. We must obey like Jesus did as children who have been loved by God. Obedience is the shortcut to pleasing God.
