농부는 자기 농장에서 농사 일을 한다. 회사원은 직장에서 회사 일을 한다. 교사는 학교에서 학교 일을 한다. 사람은 각자 자기가 맡은 일을 한다. 예수님은 일을 한다. 예수님은 누구의 일을 했을까요? 오늘 읽은 성경은 예수님께서 하신 일에 관해서 말한다.
예수님은 말한다. “만일 내가 아버지의 일을 행하지 않거든 나를 믿지 말려니와 내가 행하거든 나를 믿지 않을지라도 그일은 믿으라 그러면 너희가 아버지께서 내 안에 계시고 내가 아버지 안에 있음을 깨달아 알리라”(37-38). 여기서 예수님은 자신이 하는 일의 성격을 알려 준다. 예수님은 아버지의 일을 했다. 예수님은 자기의 일을 하지 않았다. 예수님은 자기의 일을 하기 위해서 세상에 온 것이 아니다. 예수님은 하나님 아버지의 보냄을 받았다. 그래서 주님은 자기를 보내신 아버지의 일을 하신 것이다.
예수님은 하나님 아버지가 전하라고 하신 말씀을 전했다. 예수님은 아버지의 말씀대로 모든 것을 했다. 예수님은 수많은 병자를 고쳤다. 예수님은 맹인, 나병환자, 중풍병자, 못 듣고 말하지 못하는 사람을 치유했다. 사람들은 이것을 보고 놀라면서 하나님께 영광을 돌렸다. 예수님은 바람과 파도를 잔잔하게 했다. 제자들은 보고 ‘이 분이 어떤 사람이야’ 하면서 놀랐다. 예수님의 이 모든 일은 하나님 아버지의 일이다. 그것은 사람이 할 수 있는 일이 아니다. 주님이 하신 일은 사람의 능력으로는 불가능하다. 그것은 신적인 능력이다. 그래서 주님의 일 곧 사역은 하나님 아버지의 일인 것이다.
예수님은 자기 일을 하지 않았다. 예수님은 자기의 생각과 뜻대로 하지 않았다. 예수님은 자기를 위해 살지 않았다. 예수님은 오직 자기를 보내신 아버지의 뜻대로, 말씀대로 사셨다. 그것이 바로 예수님의 사역이요 일이다. 우리 역시 자신을 위해 살지 않는다. 우리는 나를 위해 죽으시고 살아나신 주를 위해 산다(롬 14:7-8). 우리는 자신의 일이 아니라 주님의 일을 위해 산다. 그것이 구원받은 그리스도인의 삶이다. 우리는 주님의 말씀과 뜻대로 살아야 한다. 거기에 주의 일이 있다. 믿음과 말씀을 떠나면, 그것은 내 일이다. 우리가 믿음으로 순종하면 주의 일을 하게 된다. 그래서 우리는 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다. 그것이 주의 일이기 때문이다.
예수님이 하신 일은 메시야 사역이다. 주님의 일은 하나님 아버지와 동역이다. 성자 예수님 안에 하나님 아버지가 계시고, 하나님 아버지 안에 예수님이 계신다. 성부와 성자는 함께 하신다. 그래서 성자 예수님의 사역은 성부와의 공동사역이다. 예수님이 혼자하신 사역이 아니다. 그래서 예수님은 아버지의 일을 하신 것이다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 주님이 내 안에 계시고 내가 주님 안에 있다(갈 2:20). 우리는 내 안에 계신 주님의 일을 한다. 우리의 사역은 주님과 함께 하는 사역이다. 유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 믿지 않았다(39). 그들은 주님의 입에서 나오는 구원과 생명의 말씀을 거부했다. 그래서 그들은 예수님을 박해하고 잡으려 했다. 그들은 불신앙과 함께 죄를 짓고 있다. 믿음은 의의 거룩한 삶으로 인도한다. 믿음은 주의 말씀을 듣고, 깨닫고, 순종하게 하고, 주의 구원을 가져 온다.
예수님께서 요한이 세례를 주었던 곳에 가셨다. 많은 사람들이 예수님께 와서 말했다. “요한은 아무 표적도 아니하였으나 요한이 이 사람을 가리켜 말한 것은 다 참이라”(41). 사실 요한은 표적을 행하지 않았다. 요한은 예수님의 길을 준비한 선지자다. 그는 죄 사함을 얻게 하는 회개의 세례를 전했다. 요한의 사명은 사람들이 회개하여 예수님을 구주로 믿게 하는 것이다. 요한이 한 말은 모두가 진실이다. 그는 주님의 선지자로서 하나님의 말씀을 전했기 때문이다. 오늘의 세상은 거짓이 판을 친다. 사람들은 속이고 거짓말 한다. 보이스 피싱으로 사기를 친다. 하지만 요한의 말은 거짓이 없다. 우리 역시 주님의 말씀을 말해야 한다. 우리 마음에 진실이 있어야 한다. 우리는 진리를 말해야 한다. 거기에 참된 그리스도인의 삶이 있다.
예수님의 말씀을 듣고 표적을 본 많은 사람들이 예수님을 믿었다. 지금도 믿지 않는 사람도 있지만, 믿는 사람도 있다. 복음을 들은 모든 사람들이 안 믿는 것이 아니다. 그들 중에는 믿는 사람도 있다. 전도를 하면 그러한 일이 발생한다. 전도의 필요성이 여기에 있다. 우리는 주님의 명령을 순종하여 복음을 전해야 한다. 베드로와 바울의 전도는 많은 사람들을 주님께로 인도했다. 우리는 인내하며 전도해야 한다. 우리는 실망하지 말고 전도해야 한다. 주님의 택한 양들이 있기 때문이다. 주님의 양은 반드시 전도를 듣고 믿는다. 전도는 주님의 잃은 양을 찾는 지름길이다.
The Works of the Father (John 10: 37-42)
A farmer works on their own farm. An employee works for a company. A teacher works at school. Each person does what was entrusted to them. Jesus also works. Whose work did Jesus do? Today’s passage talks about the works of Jesus.
Jesus says, “Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father” (v.37-38). Here Jesus explains the characteristics of his works. Jesus did the works of the Father. He did not do his own work. He did not come to the world to do his own work. Jesus was sent by the Father. Therefore, the Lord did the works of the Father, who sent him.
Jesus preached the word that God told him to preach. He did all things according to the Father’s word. Jesus healed many sicknesses. He healed the blind, the leprous, the paralyzed, and the mute and hard of hearing. People were amazed and gave glory to God. Jesus also calmed the storm and the waves. The disciples were amazed and said to each other, “Who is this?” All these works are the works of the Father. They are not things that humans can do. The things Jesus did are impossible for people to do with their power. Jesus did them with divine power. Thus, the works and ministry of Jesus are the works of the Father.
Jesus did not do his own work. He did not live according to his thoughts and will. He did not live for himself. He lived according to the will and word of the Father who sent him. That was Jesus’ ministry and works. We, too, do not live for ourselves. We live for Jesus, who died and was raised to life for us (Romans 14:7-8). We do not live to do our own work but the works of the Lord. This is the life of a Christian who has been saved. We must live according to our Lord’s word and will. That is the work of the Lord. If we depart from faith and the word, we live for ourselves. But if we obey with faith, we live for the Lord and his works. Therefore, we must obey the Lord’s word. For that is the work of the Lord.
The works of Jesus are the ministry of the Messiah. His works are a co-work with the Father. God the Father is in Jesus the Son, and Jesus is in the Father. God the Father and Jesus the Son are together. Therefore, the ministry of Jesus the Son is a co-work with God the Father. Jesus did not do his ministry alone. Therefore, he did the works of the Father. Likewise, the Lord is in us and we are in the Lord (Galatians 2:20). We do the works of the Lord who lives in us. Our ministry is one that is done with the Lord. The Jews heard this but did not believe (39). They rejected the salvation and the word of life that came from the mouth of Jesus. Therefore, they tried to persecute and arrest him. They are sinning in their unbelief. Faith leads us to righteous and holy life. It makes us hear, understand and obey the word of God, bringing salvation to our lives.
Now Jesus went to the place where John had been baptizing. Many people came to Jesus and said, “Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true” (v. 41). Indeed John did not perform signs. He is a prophet who prepared the way for Jesus. He preached baptism of repentance that leads to forgiveness of sins. John’s calling was to lead people to repentance and believe in Jesus as the Savior. All that John said is true. As the Lord’s prophet, he spoke the word of God. In today’s world, there are so many deceptions. People deceive and tell lies. People commit fraud through voice fishing, for instance. However, there is no deception or lie in John’s words. We also must speak the word of the Lord. There must be truth in our hearts and we must speak the truth. Such is the life of a true Christian.
Many people who heard what Jesus said and saw the signs he performed believed in him. Even today, there are people who do not believe and those who do believe. Not all people who hear the gospel deny it. There are those who believe. These things happen as we evangelize. That is why evangelizing is so important. We must obey the Lord’s commands and preach the gospel. The evangelism of Peter and Paul led many people to Jesus. We must persevere and evangelize. We should not be discouraged, because there are his chosen sheep. The Lord’s sheep will certainly respond to evangelism and believe. Evangelism is the shortcut to finding the lost sheep of the Lord.
