히스기야 왕이 죽을 병이 들었다. 그는 하나님 앞에 엎드려 눈물로 기도했다. 하나님은 그의 병을 고쳐 주셨다. 병은 믿는 사람과 믿지 않는 사람에게 나타난다. 치유되는 병과 치유가 어려운 병이 있다. 두통은 치유되기 쉽다. 하지만 암은 치유가 어려운 병이다. 주님은 모든 병을 치유하신다. 오늘 본문은 나사로의 병에 관한 교훈이다.
1절은 나사로에 관한 소개다. 나사로는 병자이다. 지금도 병이 있는 사람들이 많다. 특히 병원에는 각종 환자들이 있다. 환자들은 치유를 받아야 할 사람들이다. 그래서 의사들이 치료하고 또 약을 먹는다. 병은 육체적, 정신적, 재정적인 고통을 준다. 또 병은 다른 가족에게 짐을 지운다. 나사로의 병은 치유가 어려운 병이다. 사람은 그를 치료할 수 없다. 이것은 본인과 가족에게 큰 고통이다. 나사로에게는 두 형제 마리아와 마르다가 있었다. 그들은 베다니 출신으로 한 가족이다. 일반적으로 가정에는 부모와 형제 자매가 있다. 그들은 서로에게 관심을 가지고 필요할 때에 돕기도 한다. 부모가 병들었을 때에 자녀들의 간병이 있다.
2절은 마리아에 대한 소개이다. 마리아는 예수님께 향유를 붓고, 눈물로 발을 적시고, 머리카락으로 씻은 사람이다. 특별히 성경은 마리아에 대해서 말한다. 그 이유는 예수님의 말씀이 실현되기 위해서다. 마리아는 1년 연봉이 되는 향유를 주님의 장례를 위해 사용했다. 그것은 엄청난 섬김과 헌신이요 사랑이다. 마리아는 자기의 모든 소유를 주님을 위해 아낌 없이 바쳤다. 우리는 주님이 주신 우리의 소유를 주님께 드리며 섬겨야 한다. 그것은 주님께 대한 우리의 사랑의 보답이요 표시이다. 마리아는 주님을 마음으로부터 사랑했다. 그래서 그는 향유를 부으면서 사랑을 실천했다. 사랑은 증거가 필요하다. 실천이 없는 사랑은 참 사랑이 될 수 없다. 우리도 마리아처럼 실천할 때에 주를 사랑한다는 증거가 남게 된다.
마리아는 주님의 발을 눈물로 적시고 씻었다. 그것은 오직 마리아만이 한 행동이다. 남의 발을 씻는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 사람들은 그것을 좋아하지 않는다. 사람들은 자신이 낮게 취급을 받는다고 생각하기 때문이다. 하지만 부모는 자녀의 발을 씻어 준다. 부모는 자녀를 사랑하기 때문이다. 주님을 사랑하는 마리아는 주님의 발을 씻었다. 그는 예수님을 존귀하게 여기고 사랑했다. 그래서 예수님 말씀대로 성경에 기록되었다. 우리의 주님께 대한 섬김과 헌신도 하늘에 기록된다. 마리아의 신실한 믿음은 가족에게 영향을 끼쳤다. 그것은 나사로의 구원을 가져 왔다. 가족 중에 신실한 성도는 중요하다. 그것은 가족 구원의 씨앗과 기초가 될 수 있기 때문이다.
3절은 마리아와 마르다의 믿음을 보여 주고 있다. 사람이 살면서 시련과 고난이 있을 때에 어떻게 해야 하는가? 사람들은 인간적이고 세상적인 방법을 찾는다. 그들은 사람과 세상에 있는 것을 의지한다. 그들은 돈과 자기의 능력과 방법을 의지한다. 하지만 그것은 주님이 원하시는 방법이 아니다. 마리아와 마르다는 예수님께 알렸다. 나사로의 병, 곧 가족의 시련을 주님께 알렸다. 그들은 구원과 치유의 주님을 찾았다. 그들은 ‘예수님이 사랑하시는 나사로가 병이 들었습니다’라고 주님께 말했다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 고난 중에서 먼저 구원하시는 주님을 찾아야 한다. 나를 위해 죽으시고 살아 나신 주 예수 그리스도를 의지해야 한다. 사랑의 하나님 아버지 앞에 엎드려 도움을 구해야 한다. 우리는 고난과 고통에서 주님만이 나의 구원자임을 믿어야 한다. 주님 외에는 구원자가 없음을 확신해야 한다.
예수님은 나사로의 병에 대해서 들으시고 말한다. “이 병은 죽음을 병이 아니다. 하나님의 영광을 위함이요 하나님의 아들이 이로 말미암아 영광을 받게 하려 함이다”(4). 예수님은 누구인가? 예수님은 하나님의 아들 그리스도 주시다. 예수님은 모든 사람의 구주시다. 예수님은 모든 병의 치유자시다. 그 주님께서 믿음에 응답하신다. 주님은 우리의 믿음과 기도에 응답하신다. 주님은 우리를 구원하신다. 주님은 구원의 방법을 갖고 있다. 예수님은 주님 자신의 방법으로 구원하신다. 우리는 구원하시는 주님의 은혜와 사랑 안에서 살고 있다. 우리의 삶은 구원이 보장되어 있다.
나사로의 병은 하나님과 그의 아들 예수 그리스도의 영광을 위한 것이다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 또 우리는 믿어야 한다. 하나님의 사랑하는 자녀인 우리의 고난은 하나님 아버지와 주님의 영광을 위한 것이다. 하나님 아버지와 주님은 사랑하는 자녀의 문제를 해결하고 구원하는 능력과 방법 있다. 우리를 죄와 사망에서 건지신 그 크신 사랑으로 우리를 구원하신다. 하나님은 사랑하는 자녀의 고난을 방관하지 않으신다. 주님은 그 능력으로 우리를 건져 주시고 영광을 나타내신다. 우리의 고난과 문제는 모든 것을 합력하여 선을 이루시는 하나님의 구원과 영광의 통로다(롬 8:28). 그것은 하나님이 나를 통해서 이루시려는 주님의 선한 역사의 길이다. 그래서 우리는 항상 주 안에서 믿음과 소망을 가지고 나가야 한다. 구원하시는 주님이 나와 함께 하시고 구원하신다는 믿음으로 살아야 한다.
Sickness that Will Not End in Death (John 11:1-4)
King Hezekiah had terminal illness. He kneeled down before God and prayed with tears. And God healed his illness. Now both believers and unbelievers may have an illness. And there are illnesses that can be treated while there are others that are incurable. Headaches can be treated. But cancer is difficult to treat. Our Lord heals all illnesses. Today’s passage is a lesson related to Lazarus’ sickness.
Verse 1 is an introduction about Lazarus. Lazarus is suffering an illness. Even today there are many people who have an illness. There are many patients in hospitals with various diseases. These patients need to be healed. Therefore, doctors provide treatment and prescribe medicines. Diseases affect people’s physiology, mentality, and finances. Diseases cause a burden to families. Lazarus’ sickness is one that is difficult to cure. Humans cannot heal him. This is a huge difficulty for himself and his family. Lazarus had two sisters, Mary and Martha. They are from Bethany and a family. Generally, a family consists of parents, brothers, and sisters. They care about each other and help one another when needed. When parents are diseased, for example, children become caregivers.
Verse 2 introduces Mary. Mary poured perfume on Jesus, wet his feet with her tears and washed them with her hair. The Bible specifically mentions Mary. This is to fulfill the word of Jesus. Mary used perfume that is a year worth of salary for Jesus’ funeral. This is a significant service, devotion, and love. Mary dedicated all her possessions to the Lord. We must give the Lord our possessions that he gave us and serve him. This is showing our love for all the Lord has done for us. Mary loved the Lord from the bottom of her heart. So she poured perfume on him and practiced love. Love needs evidence. Love without deeds cannot be genuine. When we show deeds just like Mary did, then there will remain evidence of our love for Christ.
Mary wet Jesus’ feet with her tears and washed them. Only Mary showed this. Washing others’ feet is not an easy thing. People generally do not like to do it because they think they are being humiliated. However, parents can wash their children’s feet because they love them. Mary, who loved Jesus, washed the Lord’s feet. She honored and loved Jesus. Therefore, what she did was recorded in the Bible just as Jesus said. Likewise, our service and devotion to Jesus are recorded in heaven. Mary’s devoted faith influenced her family. It brought about the deliverance of Lazarus, her brother. Family members with devoted faith are important. They can become the seed and foundation for the entire family’s salvation.
Verse 3 shows the faith of Mary and Martha. When we face trials and hardships, what should we do? People seek worldly solutions. They rely on people and the things of this world. They trust in money and their own abilities and ways. However, that is not what God is pleased with. Mary and Martha informed Jesus. They informed Jesus of Lazarus’ illness, the family’s trial. They sought the Lord of salvation and healing. They told Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick” (v.3). We should remember that we must first seek Jesus in our trials. We must rely on the Lord Jesus Christ, who died and was raised to life for us. We must kneel down before God our Father and ask for help. We must believe that only Jesus is our Savior in our hardships and troubles. We must be confident that there is no other Savior except Jesus.
When Jesus’ heard of Lazarus’ sickness, he said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it” (v.4). Who is Jesus? He is Christ the Lord, the Son of God. Jesus is the Savior of all people. He is the Healer of all diseases. He responds to our faith. He responds to our faith and prayers. The Lord saves us. He has ways to save. He delivers us through his own ways. We live in the grace and love of God and his Son Jesus Christ. Salvation is guaranteed for us.
Lazarus’ sickness is for the glory of God and his Son Jesus Christ. We must remember that we must believe. God our Father and the Lord Jesus have ways to solve their beloved children’s problems and save them. They will deliver us with the great love that saved us from sin and death. God does not just stand by when his beloved children are going through hardships. Our Lord delivers us with his power and shows his glory. Our hardships and problems are the path to the deliverance and glory of God, who makes everything work together for good (Romans 8:28). They are ways for God to fulfill the Lord’s good work through us. Thus, we must press on with faith and hope in the Lord. We must believe that the Lord is with us and saves us.
