어떤 사람이 캄캄한 밤에 길을 가다가 구덩이에 빠졌다. 그가 어두워서 앞을 볼 수 없었기 때문이다. 만일 빛이 있었다면 그는 넘어지거나 빠지지 않았을 것이다. 오늘 본문은 사람이 넘어지지 않기 위하여 빛이 있을 때에 행함에 대해서 말한다.
하나님의 아들이시며 그리스도이신 구주 예수님이 특별히 사랑하는 사람들이 있었다(5). 많은 가정이 있지만 주님이 사랑하는 가정이 있다. 그 가정은 마리아 가정이다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 주변에 많은 사람들이 있지만 특별히 사랑하는 사람들이 있다. 우리는 무엇보다도 가족을 사랑한다. 또한 우리는 나를 위해주고 도와 준 사람을 기억하며 사랑한다. 주님은 마리아 가정을 사랑했다. 우리는 이것을 기억해야 한다. 마리아는 예수님을 많이 사랑했다. 그는 자기의 모든 소유와 온 마음으로 주를 섬겼다. 주님은 자기를 사랑하는 사람을 사랑한다. 하나님은 자기의 말씀을 순종한 아브라함을 사랑했다. 그는 순종하여 독자 이삭을 바쳤다. 우리는 주님의 사랑을 받았다. 그래서 우리는 구원을 받았다. 주님의 사랑을 받은 우리는 주님을 사랑해야 한다. 우리가 주님을 사랑하는 길은 주의 계명을 지키는 것이다(요 14:15, 21, 23). 우리가 주님을 사랑하면 주님은 우리와 우리의 가정을 사랑한다. 사랑은 주고 받는 것이다. 우리가 사랑하면 사랑을 받는다.
예수님은 사랑하는 나사로가 병들었다는 소식을 들었다. 우리는 사랑하는 사람이 병들었을 때에, 마음이 아프고, 괴롭고, 염려한다. 우리는 속히 회복되기를 원한다. 주님은 그 곳에서 이틀을 머물렀다(6). 주님은 생사화복은 물론 구원과 치유의 권능이 있다. 모든 것은 주의 손에서 좌우된다. 우리의 모든 삶과 앞날이 주의 손에 있다. 주님은 우리의 삶 가운데서 구원과 도우심과 형통의 역사를 하신다. 주님은 나사로에 대한 생각과 계획을 갖고 계신다. 시간이 지연될지라도 염려할 필요가 없다. 믿음으로 인내하며 나가면 되기 때문이다. 주님은 자기의 때에, 자기의 방법으로 나사로를 살리신다. 주님은 우리의 삶에서 주님이 정하신 때에 주님의 능력과 방법과 지혜로 역사하신다. 그래서 주님은 자기의 영광을 나타내신다.
예수님은 제자들에게 유대로 가자고 말씀한다(7). 하지만 제자들은 대답한다. ‘주님 방금도 유대인들이 돌로 치려고 했습니다. 그런데도 주님께서 다시 유대로 가려고 합니까?’(8) 제자들은 주님을 염려했다. 하지만 주님은 유대로 가야 했다. 왜냐하면 사랑하는 사람이 병들었기 때문이다. 주님의 마음은 바로 거기에 있었다. 주님의 마음은 우리에게 있다. 주님은 내가 있는 곳에 항상 함께 하신다. 주님은 나에게 마음을 두시고 돌보신다. 주님은 박해와 고난이 있어도 유대로 다시 가신다. 예수님은 많은 고난과 죽음의 고통이 있어도 세상에 오셨다. 주님은 자신이 사랑하는 사람들이 있는 곳에 오셨다. 주님은 우리를 사랑하셔서 십자가에 죽으셨다. 우리는 주님의 사랑을 기억해야 한다. 우리는 주를 위한 고난과 박해가 있어도 주를 끝까지 사랑해야 한다.
예수님은 사람이 낮(열12시간)에 다니면 넘어지지 않는다고 말한다(9). 낮에는 빛이 있기 때문이다. 우리가 낮에 다니면 넘어지지 않는다. 그래서 사람들은 주로 낮에 일하고 걷는다. 사람들은 빛이 없는 어두운 길을 걸으려고 하지 않는다. 예수님은 빛이시다(요 9:5). 우리가 빛 가운데 행하기 위해서는 예수님을 믿어야 한다. 우리가 주님을 믿고 순종하면 어두움에서 벗어난다. 우리는 낮과 빛에 속해 있다. 성경은 말한다. “형제들아 너희는 어둠에 있지 아니하매 그 날이 도둑같이 너희에게 임하지 못하리니 너희는 빛의 아들이요 낮의 아들이라 우리가 밤이나 어둠에 속하지 아니하나니”(살전 5:4-5). 우리는 빛이신 하나님과 주님의 자녀다. 우리는 어둠에 있지 않다. 우리는 빛 속해 있다. 그래서 우리는 넘어지지 않는다. 우리가 빛이신 주님과 동행하면 믿음에 견고하게 서게 된다. 우리가 주님께 순종하면 의의 거룩한 길로 행한다. 그래서 우리는 주님이 원하시는 삶을 살게 된다.
예수님은 사람이 밤에 다니면 빛이 그 안에 없기 때문에 넘어진다고 말한다(10). 사람이 밤에 다니면 볼 수 없기 때문에 넘어진다. 빛이신 예수님을 믿지 않는 사람은 어둠에 있다. 그는 죄의 어두움 가운데 행한다. 그래서 그는 넘어진다. 그는 생명의 길이 아닌 사망의 길로 행한다. 어두운 밤에는 마음대로 자유롭게 다니기 어렵다. 예수님이 없는 삶은 자유도 없다. 주님이 없는 삶은 길도 없고 생명도 없는 죽음의 길이다. 빛에 사는 사람은 의로움, 선함, 진실함, 거룩함, 생명 길로 다닌다. 주님의 빛에 행하는 우리는 똑바로 서서 걸을 수 있다. 우리는 주님의 빛 안에서 안전하게 자유롭게 걷는다. 우리는 빛 가운데 살면서 하나님 아버지와 주님이 계시는 천국으로 가게 된다. 우리는 빛이신 주님의 말씀에 순종하자. 그래서 우리는 견고하게 서서 걸으며 주님의 생명으로 충만한 삶을 살자.
Walking in the Light (John 11:5-10)
A person was walking in the dark and fell into a pit because he could not see the path very well. If there was light, he would not have stumbled or fallen. Today’s passage talks about walking in the light so as not to stumble.
There were those whom Jesus, who is Christ the Savior and the Son of God, particularly loved (v.5). There are many families, but there are ones that the Lord loves. People tend to love their families more than anything else. We also remember the people who helped and cared for us and love them. Jesus loved Mary’s family. We should remember that Mary loved Jesus greatly. She served him with all her possessions and heart. Jesus loves those who love him. God loved Abraham who obeyed his word. Abraham obeyed and sacrificed his son Isaac. We have received Jesus’ love. Therefore, we received salvation. We who received the love of Jesus ought to love him. To love him is to obey his commands (John 14:15, 21, 23). When we love Jesus, he loves us and our family. Love should be received and given. When we love, we will also receive love.
Jesus heard that Lazarus, whom he loves, was sick. When someone whom we love is sick, we feel hurt, troubled, and anxious. We want them to recover quickly. But Jesus stayed where he was for two more days (v.6). Jesus has the power over life and death, prosperity and adversity, and of salvation and healing. All things are controlled by his hands. All our lives and future are in his hands. Jesus shows the work of salvation, help, and prosperity in our lives. And he has plans for Lazarus. Even though things seem to be delayed, there is no need to be worried. For we just need to keep going with perseverance in faith. Jesus raises Lazarus at the set time with his ways. He works in our lives through his power, ways, and wisdom at the set time he has determined. And he reveals his glory.
Jesus tells the disciples that they should go back to Judea (v.7). But the disciples reply, “But rabbi, a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and you are going back?” (v.8). The disciples were concerned for him. However, Jesus had to go to Judea, because his beloved brother was sick. His heart was with him. His heart is also with us. Wherever we are, our Lord is also with us. Jesus keeps us in his heart and cares for us. Even though he faced persecutions and hardships in Judea, he went back. Even though there are many difficulties and even death, he came to the world. He came to where his beloved lives. He loved us and so he died on the cross. We must remember his love. We must love him to the end in the face of hardships and persecutions that come because of him.
Jesus says that when a person walks in the daytime, they do not stumble (v.9). It is because there is light in the daytime. When we walk in the daytime, we do not stumble. So most people work and walk in the daytime. People try to avoid walking in the dark. Jesus is the light (John 9:5). For us to live in the light, we must believe in Jesus. When we believe in Jesus and obey him, we escape darkness. We belong to the daytime and the light. The Bible says, “But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.” (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5). We are the children of God and Jesus. We do not walk in darkness. We belong to the light. Therefore, we do not stumble. When we walk with the Lord of Light, we will stand firm in faith. When we obey the Lord, we will walk in the way of righteousness and holiness. And we will live a life that pleases him.
Jesus says that a person stumbles when they walk at night because there is no light (v.10). They stumble because they cannot see well. Those who do not believe in Jesus the Light dwell in darkness. They walk in the darkness of sin, so they stumble. They walk in the way of death, not in the way of life. It is hard to freely walk around in the dark. Life without Jesus is without freedom. Life without Jesus has no life or path; it is the way to death. Those who live in light walk in the way of righteousness, goodness, truthfulness, holiness, and life. We who live in the light are able to stand upright and walk. We are able to walk safely and freely in the light of Jesus. When we live in the light, we will head toward the kingdom of heaven where God the Father and Jesus live. Let us obey the word of the Lord, who is the light. And let us walk firmly and live a life that is full of the life of Jesus.
