모든 물건은 주인이 있다. 집, 건물, 땅 그리고 재산은 소유하는 사람이 있다. 주인은 자기의 소유를 자기의 뜻대로 처리하고 사용할 권리가 있다. 다른 사람이 주인의 것을 훔치면 죄가 된다. 어떤 사람들이 사과 밭에서 사과를 많이 거두어 갔다. 주인이 나중에 알고 가슴을 치며 괴로워 했다. 사과 농사를 수고롭게 지은 사람은 주인이다. 그래서 주인은 자기 사과를 먹기도 하고 팔기도 한다. 오늘 본문 성경은 믿음의 주, 곧 믿음을 다스리는 분에 대해 말한다.
예수님은 제자들에게 교훈을 주셨다. 제자들은 주님으로부터 배웠다. 주님의 제자인 우리도 주님으로부터 배운다. 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀했다. “우리 친구 나사로가 잠들었다. 그러나 내가 깨우러 가노라”(11). 예수님은 나사로를 친구라고 말한다. 하나님은 구약에서 아브라함을 친구라고 부른다(사 41:8). 예수님은 제자들을 친구라고 부른다(요 15:13-15). 예수님은 친구를 위해 목숨을 버리는 것은 가장 큰 사랑이라고 말한다(요 15:13). 예수님은 친구인 우리를 위해 목숨을 버리셨다. 그러한 주님의 사랑은 가장 위대한 것이다.
예수님은 나사로의 죽음을 잠자는 것으로 묘사한다. 잠 자는 것과 죽음은 다르다. 잠 자는 사람은 깨우면 일어난다. 그는 생명이 있다. 하지만 죽은 사람은 깨워도 일어나지 못한다. 그는 생명이 없기 때문이다. 주님은 죽음을 잠 자는 것으로 본다. 사람의 관점과 다르다. 사람은 죽으면 끝났다고 생각한다. 왜냐하면 사람은 죽음 앞에서 더 이상 할 수 있는 일이 없기 때문이다. 하지만 예수님은 하나님의 아들로서 하나님과 동등이시다. 예수님은 모든 것을 하실 수 있다. 주님은 전능하다. 그래서 예수님은 죽음을 자는 것으로 말한다. 예수님은 죽음을 자기의 뜻대로 다스릴 수 있다. 생명과 죽음은 주님의 손에서 좌우된다. 주님은 잠 자는 나사로를 깨우신다. 잠 자는 사람은 깨우면 되기 때문이다.
제자들은 예수님의 말씀을 정확하게 이해하지 못했다(12-13). 제자들은 나사로가 잠 자는 것으로 생각했다. 그래서 그들은 차라리 나사로가 편하게 잠들었으면 좋겠다고 말했다. 사람이 마음이 괴롭고 몸이 아플 때에는 잠이 약이다. 자는 동안에는 그 고통을 잊어버릴 수 있기 때문이다. 제자들은 병든 나사로가 잠을 자면서 쉬면 좋겠다고 생각했다. 그래서 예수님은 제자들에게 나사로가 죽었다고 분명하게 말씀했다(14). 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리의 생각과 지식으로는 주님의 말씀을 온전히 이해할 수 없다. 따라서 우리는 주님의 도움을 구해야 한다. 주님은 성령으로 진리의 말씀을 온전하게 알게 해 주신다. 주의 말씀을 바르게 이해하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 우리가 말씀을 바르게 이해하지 못하면 오류에 빠지게 된다. 성경에 대한 바른 이해와 지식은 바른 신앙으로 인도한다. 그래서 우리는 성경을 기도하면서 읽어야 한다. 그러면 주님은 우리가 바르게 이해하도록 도와 주신다.
예수님은 자신이 나사로가 죽은 장소에 있지 않은 것을 기뻐하셨다. 왜냐하면 예수님은 제자들에게 믿음을 주려고 했기 때문이다(15). 예수님은 믿음의 주이시다. 그래서 예수님은 우리의 믿음을 위해 일하신다. 믿음은 주님이 주관하신다. 십자가와 부활의 주 예수 그리스도가 없으면 믿음도 없다. 그래서 성경은 믿음은 들음에서 나며, 들음은 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암는다고 말한다(롬 10:17). 히브리서는 예수님을 믿음의 주요 온전하게 하시는 분이라고 말한다(히 12:2). 우리의 믿음을 온전하게 해 주시는 분은 예수님이다.
예수님은 믿음의 시작과 기초가 되신다. 예수님은 믿음의 주인이시다. 예수님은 믿음의 주관자이시다. 예수님은 나의 믿음이 자라게 하시고 열매를 맺게 하신다. 예수님은 나의 믿음이 강하고 견고하게 하신다. 예수님은 전반적인 나의 믿음의 삶에서 역사하신다. 예수님은 우리가 만나는 좋은 일, 안 좋은 일, 원하는 일, 원하지 않는 일, 삶의 고난과 곤경 가운데서 역사하신다. 하나님은 요셉의 삶 가운데 역사하셨다. 주님은 요셉이 팔려가고 감옥에 갈 때에도 그의 삶 가운데서 일하셨다. 주님은 다윗의 시련 중에도 믿음의 연단을 위해서 일하셨다. 주님은 바울의 모든 고난과 시련 중에도 역사하셨다. 그래서 주님은 자신의 뜻을 이루셨다.
오늘도 예수님은 우리의 믿음을 위해서 일하신다. 주님은 나와 함께 하시면서 나를 도우시고 인도하신다. 주님은 나의 믿음의 성장과 견고함을 위해서 일하신다. 주님은 나의 믿음의 삶 가운데서 주님의 뜻을 이루기 위해서 역사하신다. 예수님은 나사로의 죽음을 통해서 제자들의 믿음을 위해서 일하셨다. 주님은 내가 만나는 모든 상황 가운데서 나의 믿음을 위해서 일하고 계심을 확신해야 한다. 주님은 주님이 원하시는 믿음에 이르도록 역사하신다. 그래서 우리는 항상 믿음으로 생각하고 전진해야 한다. 주님은 지금도 변함 없이 나의 믿음의 성장과 견고함을 위해서 일하신다.
The Lord of Faith (John 11:11-16)
All objects have an owner. Houses, buildings, lands, and possessions have someone who owns them. The owner has the authority to handle and use them according to their will. If someone else takes them away, it becomes a theft. Some strangers went to an apple orchard and took a lot of the apples. The owner found out about it and was distressed. The owner works hard to grow the apple trees. And they eat their apples or sell them at their own will. Today’s passage is about the Lord of faith, that is, the One who has ownership and rule over faith.
Jesus taught the disciples and the disciples learned from him. As the disciples of the Lord, we also learn from him. Jesus told the disciples, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up” (v.11). Jesus calls Lazarus his friend. In the Old Testament, God calls Abraham his friend (Isaiah 41:8). Jesus calls his disciples friends (John 15:13-15). He says that laying down one’s life for their friend is the greatest love (John 15:13). Jesus laid down his life for us, his friends. Such love of Christ is the greatest love.
Jesus described Lazarus’ death as falling asleep. Sleep and death are different. If we wake those who are sleeping, they wake up because they are living. However, those who are dead do not wake up even if we wake them because they are not living. Jesus sees Lazarus’ death as being asleep. People’s perspectives are different. They think that a person’s death is the end because there is nothing they can do about it. However, Jesus is equal with God as His Son. He can do all things. The Lord is almighty. Therefore, Jesus describes the death as if he is asleep. Jesus can rule over death according to his will. Life and death are in the hands of the Lord. Jesus wakes up Lazarus who is asleep. For those who are asleep can be woken up.
The disciples did not understand Jesus clearly (v.12-13). They thought that Lazarus was actually asleep. So they said to Jesus that if he sleeps, he will get better. When a person’s heart is distressed or their body sick, sleep is a medicine. While they are asleep, they forget the pain. So the disciples thought that it would be good for Lazarus to sleep and get rest. Jesus then told them plainly that Lazarus is dead (v.14). We must remember that we cannot understand the word of the Lord completely with our thoughts and knowledge. Therefore, we must ask the Lord for help. The Lord helps us know the word of Truth completely through the Holy Spirit. It is crucial that we understand the word of God correctly. When we do not understand the word of God correctly, we can fall into error. Correct understanding of the Bible leads to upright faith. Therefore, we must read the Bible with prayer. Then the Lord helps us understand it correctly.
Jesus was glad that he was not where Lazarus was. It was because Jesus wanted to give faith to his disciples (v.15). Jesus is the Lord of faith. So he works for our faith. The Lord rules over faith. Without Jesus Christ, the Lord of the cross and resurrection, there is no faith. Therefore, the Bible says that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). Hebrews says that Jesus is the author and perfector of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Jesus is the One who perfects our faith.
Jesus is the beginning and foundation of faith. He is the Lord of faith. He is the Ruler of faith. Jesus enables our faith to grow and bear fruit. He strengthens and makes firm our faith. He works in our overall life of faith. He works amid times when we deal with good situations, bad situations, with what we want, with what we do not want, and our hardship and trials. God worked in Joseph’s life. The Lord worked in Joseph’s life when he was sold and was thrown into prison. When David was going through difficulties, God worked for the discipline of his faith. He worked in Paul’s hardships and trials. And he fulfilled his will.
Even today Jesus works for our faith. The Lord is with us and he helps and guides us. He works for the growth and stability of our faith. He works in our life of faith to fulfill his will. Jesus worked through Lazarus’ death for the faith of the disciples. In all the situations that we face, we must be confident that God is working for our faith. He works so that we reach the level of faith that he wants. Thus, we must always think and press on with faith. Even now, the Lord is constantly working for the growth and strengthening of our faith.
