어떤 주인이 해야 할 일을 일하는 사람에게 지시했다. 그리고 그는 다시 와서 확인했다. 그런데 그들은 주인이 생각한대로 일을 하지 않았다. 주인은 다시 그 일을 하라고 지시한다. 주인이 생각한 것과 일하는 사람들의 생각에 차이가 있다. 우리의 생각과 주님의 생각은 다를 수 있다. 내가 원하는 것과 주님이 원하는 것은 항상 같지 않다. 오늘 본문 성경은 그것을 보여 준다.
생명과 사망의 권능을 가지신 예수님은 나사로가 있는 곳에 왔다(17). 주님은 죽은 나사로가 4일 동안 무덤에 있는 것을 보았다. 주님은 내가 있는 곳에 항상 함께 하신다. 주님은 나를 보신다. 죽음은 사람이 겪는 가장 큰 고통과 고난이다. 그래서 사람들은 죽음 앞에서 눈물을 흘리고 고통스러워 한다. 주님은 나사로의 무덤에 오셨다. 주님은 우리의 고난과 고통을 다 지켜 보고 계신다. 주님은 나의 시련을 결코 외면하지 않으신다. 주님은 마음으로부터 나를 사랑하시고, 지켜 주시고, 돌보신다.
나사로는 무덤에 묻힌지 4일이 되었다. 사람이 나사로를 위해 할 일은 더 이상 없다. 나사로의 죽음은 절망과 좌절의 끝이다. 그것은 불가능한 상황 속에 있다. 병은 치유될 것이라는 희망이 있다. 하지만 죽음은 더 이상 희망이 없다. 희망이 없고 절망적인 상황에서 어떻게 해야 하는가? 그것은 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음이다. 우리가 주를 믿을 때에 주님은 절망을 희망으로 바꾸신다. 우리가 믿음을 가질 때에 죽음을 생명으로 옮기신다. 우리 앞에 놓인 불가능한 일을 생명과 소망 그리고 구원의 주님이 해결하신다. 그래서 주님은 하나님의 영광을 나타내신다.
베다니는 예루살렘에서 가까운 거리에 있었다(약 2마일). 사람들은 가까운 곳에 많이 간다. 먼 거리에서보다 근처에 있는 사람들이 많이 모인다. 나사로의 이웃에 사는 유대인들이 마리아와 마르다에게 위로하려고 왔다. 죽음은 슬픈 일이다. 죽은 사람의 가족에게는 위로가 필요하다. 사람들은 장례식에 참석하여 위로한다. ‘주님의 위로가 함께 하길 바랍니다’라고 말한다. 그런데 사람의 위로는 효과와 능력에서 한계가 있다. 사람의 위로는 약간의 위로가 될 뿐이다. 하나님의 위로가 있다. 하나님의 위로는 실제적이고 효과가 크다. 주님의 위로는 마음과 상황에 임한다. 그래서 주님의 위로는 문제를 근본적으로 해결한다. 주님은 죄로 인하여 영원히 죽게 되는 우리를 영원히 살리신다. 주님은 영원한 슬픔에서 우리를 건지시고 영원한 위로와 기쁨을 주신다. 주님의 위로는 위로가 필요한 문제를 해결하신다. 예수님은 회당장 야이로의 죽은 딸을 살리셨다. 주님의 위로는 더이상 위로가 필요하지 않게 만드신다. 주님은 우리의 문제를 완전히 해결해 주신다. 주님은 문제 자체를 없앤다. 그래서 주님은 완전하게 회복시켜 주신다.
마르다는 예수님이 오신다는 말을 듣고 가서 영접했다. 우리는 주님을 마음으로부터 영접해야 한다. 우리는 주님을 마음에 모시고 섬겨야 한다. 그것은 믿음으로 순종하는 것이다. 하나님의 아들 주 예수 그리스도를 영접하는 것이 믿음이요 구원의 길이다. 우리는 가장 존귀하신 생명의 주님을 영접하고 따라야 한다.
21-22절은 마르다의 애절한 마음과 믿음을 묘사한다. 여기서 우리는 마르다의 믿음의 생각을 볼 수 있다. 마르다는 예수님이 나사로가 있는 곳에 계셨다면 안 죽었을 것이라고 말한다(21). 이것은 마르다의 믿음이다. 물론 예수님이 나사로가 죽기 전에 병을 치료했다면 나사로는 살았을 것이다. 마르다는 나사로가 죽은 것을 매우 가슴 아파하고 괴로워하고 있다. 마르다는 나사로가 안 죽고 살았으면 좋았을 것이라고 생각했다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 우리의 문제가 악화되기 전에 해결되었으면 좋겠다고 생각한다. 그래서 우리는 주 앞에 엎드려 믿음으로 기도한다. 우리는 ‘주님이 빨리 해결해 주십시요’라고 기도한다. 하지만 우리는 염려하고 괴로워할 필요가 없다. 왜냐하면 주님은 최선의 방법을 가지고 계시기 때문이다. 주님은 주님의 권능과 방법으로 해결하시고 구원하신다.
마르다는 지금이라도 예수님께서 하나님께 구하는 것을 주실 것이라고 말한다(22). 마르다는 믿음의 사람이다. 마르다는 주님께 대한 믿음을 끝까지 갖고 있다. 우리도 주님께 대한 믿음을 포기하지 말아야 한다. 어떤 일이나 상황이 닥치더라도 믿음을 끝까지 갖고 있어야 한다. 우리는 앞 길에 절망적인 상황이 있을지라도 주를 믿는 믿음을 굳게 가져야 한다. 주님은 주님의 방식과 정하신 때에 우리를 도우시고 구원하신다. 주님은 우리를 최선의 길로 인도하신다. 그래서 주님은 나를 사랑하시고, 도우시고, 구원하시는 증거를 나타낸다. 주님은 하나님의 영광을 위하여 나의 삶 가운데서 지금도 역사하고 계신다. 우리는 오직 믿음으로 나가자. 주님이 나를 구원하시기 때문이다.
The Lord’s Thoughts, My Thoughts (John 11:17-22)
An employer assigned some work to his employee. And he came back to check on it. He saw that the employee did not do the work as he expected. So he told him to do it again. There is a difference between the owner’s thoughts and that of the hired workers. Our thoughts may be different from the thoughts of the Lord. What the Lord wants from us and what we want for ourselves are not always the same. Today’s passage shows us this.
Jesus, who has the power over life and death, came to where Lazarus was (v.17). He saw that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Jesus is always with us wherever we are. He sees us. Death is the greatest pain and hardship that a person can face. So people grieve and are distressed before death. Now Jesus came to Lazarus’ tomb. The Lord is watching our hardships and troubles. He does not ignore our sufferings. He loves us, protects us, and cares for us from the depth of his heart.
It had been four days since Lazarus was put in the tomb. For humans, there is nothing they can do about the situation. The death of Lazarus is a despairing end. It is a situation that is impossible to escape. For illnesses, there is hope that the sick will be healed. But for death, there is no more hope. When we are deprived of hope and are in despair, what should we do? We must have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. When we believe in the Lord, he turns despair into hope. When we have faith, the Lord turns death to life. The Lord of Life, Hope, and Salvation takes care of the impossible situations that are before us. And he reveals the glory of God.
Bethany was near Jerusalem (approximately 2 miles). People usually go to places nearby. They usually gather in nearby places rather than places far away. The Jews who were Lazarus’ neighbors came to Mary and Martha to comfort them. Death is a grievous event. The family of the dead need comfort. People attend the funeral to give comfort. They say comforting words such as “May the Lord’s comfort be with you.” But people’s comfort is limited in effect and power. Their comfort gives temporary comfort. Now there is the comfort of God. God’s comfort has a great effect. The Lord’s comfort comes to our heart and situations. And his comfort solves the root problem. Jesus saves us, who otherwise were subject to eternal death due to sin. He delivers us from eternal sorrow and gives us eternal comfort and joy. The Lord’s comfort resolves the problem that needs comfort. Jesus raised the dead daughter of Jairus, a synagogue leader. The Lord’s comfort works such that we no longer feel the need for comfort. He solves our problems completely. He removes the problem itself. And the Lord restores completely.
Martha heard that Jesus was coming, and she went out to meet him. We also must meet the Lord and receive him from our heart. We must have him in and serve him from our heart. That is obeying by faith. Receiving the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is faith and the way to salvation. We must welcome the Lord of Life, who is most worthy of all honor, and follow him.
Verses 21-22 describes Martha’s sorrowful heart and her faith. Here we can see Martha’s thoughts of faith. Martha said that if Jesus had been where Lazarus was, he would not have died (v.21). This is Martha’s faith. Indeed, if Jesus had healed Lazarus’ illness before he died, he would have lived. Martha is feeling extreme grief and agony over Lazrus’ death. Martha wished that Lazarus was alive. Same with us. We also hope that our problems are solved before they worsen. So we fall down before the Lord and pray by faith. We pray, “Lord, please deliver us from the situation quickly.” However, there is no need to be worried or distressed. For the Lord has the greatest solution. He delivers and resolves with his mighty power and solution.
Martha says that even now, God will give Jesus whatever he asks (v.22). Martha is a woman of faith. She has faith toward Jesus to the end. We must also never give up our faith in the Lord. Whatever happens to us, we must keep our faith to the end. Even if there is a discouraging situation before us, we ought to keep firm faith in the Lord. The Lord helps and saves us at the set time and with his solution. He leads us to the best way. And he reveals evidence that he loves, helps, and delivers us. Even today Jesus is working in our lives for the glory of God. Let us press on with faith. For the Lord delivers us.
