이스라엘과 블레셋이 싸울때에 블레셋 사람 골리앗이 등장했다. 그는 키가 크고 힘이 센 용사였다. 그런데 이스라엘 군인들 가운데 골리앗과 맞서서 싸울 사람이 없었다. 누군가는 골리앗과 싸워서 해결해야 했다. 하지만 아무도 나서지 않았다. 그 때에 한 사람이 나타났다. 그가 바로 다윗이다. 다윗이 골리앗과 싸워서 이겼고 이스라엘은 승리했다. 사람을 죄와 사망에서 구원할 분이 필요했다. 하지만 이 세상에는 구원자가 없었다. 죄인을 구원하여 영생을 얻게 할 분을 오늘 읽은 성경은 말한다.
죽은 자를 살리시는 권능의 주님은 마르다에게 말한다. 예수님은 믿음의 사람, 사랑하는 사람에게 응답하신다. 구원과 생명의 주님은 주를 믿는 자, 영생을 얻고 하나님의 자녀 된 자에게 말씀한다. 주님은 우리의 믿음에 응답하신다. 주님은 믿는 자에게 능력을 나타낸다. 예수님은 ‘네 오라버니가 살아나리라’(23)고 말한다. 이 말씀은 죽은 나사로가 무덤에서 살아난는 의미다. 그것은 죽음을 생명으로 바꾸시는 주님의 능력이다. 주님은 모든 불가능한 상황을 가능하게 하신다. 우리의 어렵고 불가능한 문제도 주님은 해결한다. 주님은 못하실 일이 없다. 그래서 우리는 그 주님을 믿고 주님께 맡겨야 한다. 주님이 해결하시고 구원하신다. 하나님은 이스라엘이 바다 가운데로 건너게 하셨다. 주님은 물로 포도주를 만드셨다. 우리의 문제는 주님의 손에서 해결된다.
마르다는 예수님의 말씀을 바르게 이해하지 못했다. 마르다는 마지막날 부활 때에 나사로가 살아날 것이라고 믿었다(24). 주님은 그런 뜻으로 말하지 않았다. 예수님은 죽은 나사로가 지금 살아날 것이라고 말씀했다. 우리는 주님의 말씀 곧 성경을 바르게 이해해야 한다. 그것은 집을 견고하게 잘 짓는 것과 같다. 주의 말씀을 바르게 이해하지 못하는 것은 시험 볼 때에 정답이 아닌 오답을 쓰는 것과 같다. 바른 이해는 정답을 쓰는 것과 같다. 하지만 마르다는 믿음의 사람이었다. 그는 부활을 믿었다. 이처럼 주님을 믿는 믿음은 매우 중요하다. 우리 역시 부활을 믿는다. 우리는 주님이 오실 때에 부활하여 주님과 함께 천국에서 영원히 살 것을 믿는다.
예수님은 마르다에게 대답하신다. “나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐”(25-26). 이 말씀은 우리에게 복음이요 구원과 진리의 말씀이다. 부활이요 생명이신 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살아 난다. 인간이 죽음의 권세를 이기는 길은 믿음이다. 우리는 믿음의 통로를 거쳐서 부활과 영생으로 간다. 우리는 주 예수님만이 부활이요 생명이라는 것을 기억해야 한다. 사람이 부활과 영생에 이르는 길이 있다. 그것은 속죄함이다. 죄가 씻어져야 우리는 생명과 부활에 이른다. 우리의 죄를 깨끗하게 하신 분이 십자가와 부활의 주 예수다. 우리는 주님을 믿음으로 속죄함 받고 의롭다 함을 받는다. 그리고 우리는 영생과 부활의 권능을 얻게 된다.
예수님은 부활이다. 예수님은 십자가에서 죽지만 반드시 부활한다. 왜냐하면 주님은 부활이기 때문이다. 부활이신 분이 부활한다. 부활이 아닌 사람은 스스로 부활할 수 없다. 부활이신 분이 부활하게 해야 부활한다. 부활이 아닌 다른 존재는 인간을 부활하게 할 수 없다. 부활이신 주 예수가 참 구주다.
예수님은 생명이시다. 생명은 죽음과 상관이 없다는 의미다. 생명은 죽음의 권세가 무력하다는 말이다. 주님은 영원한 생명이다. 주님은 우리의 생명이다. 주님은 믿는 자의 생명이다. 생명은 죄와 사망에서 해방되었다는 의미다. 생명은 구원의 확실한 증거요 보장이다. 우리가 영생을 얻었다는 것은 하나님의 뜻의 성취를 의미한다(요 6:40). 하나님은 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 영생을 얻게 하신다. 거기에 하나님의 온전하신 뜻이 있다.
예수님은 믿음으로 사는 사람은 영원히 죽지 않는다고 말씀한다(26). 죄인된 인간이 영생을 얻는 길은 믿음이다(요 6:47-48). 내가 죽음에서 해방되는 길은 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 것이다. 누구든지 믿지 않으면 죄 가운데서 죽는다. 죄와 죽음의 장벽을 뛰어 넘어 영생으로 가는 길은 믿음이다. 믿음은 십자가와 부활의 권능이 역사하는 통로다. 생명의 주님은 믿는 자에게 영생을 주신다(요 10:28). 그래서 주님은 우리에게 믿음을 요구하신다. 그것은 우리가 영생을 얻기 위해서다.
27절은 마르다의 믿음의 고백이다. 예수님 말씀에 대한 마르다의 반응이다. 우리도 예수님 말씀에 대한 고백과 반응이 있어야 한다. 우리의 진실한 고백은 구원을 가져 온다. 예수님이 그리스도요 하나님의 아들이심을 믿어야 한다. 예수님이 나의 구주이심을 고백해야 한다. 주 예수 그리스도 외에는 구원자, 메시야가 없음을 믿어야 한다. 우리는 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 의롭다함을 받고, 구원을 받고, 성령을 받고, 영생을 얻는다. 우리가 영원히 살고 천국에 가는 길은 믿음이다. 그래서 주님을 믿는 사람이 복이 있다. 믿음의 사람이 복을 받는다. 우리는 오직 믿음으로 살자. 우리가 살면서 하나님 아버지가 주시는 모든 복이 믿음으로 주어지기 때문이다.
Jesus the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:23-27)
When the Israelites and the Philistine were in war, Goliath came forth. He was a warrior who was tall and strong. From the Israelite armies, there was no one who had the courage to fight Goliath. Someone had to fight him for the Israelite to be saved. However, no one from the armies volunteered. But there was one man who did–David. He fought Goliath and struck him down, and the Israelites gained victory. We needed someone to save us from sin and death. However, there was no savior on the earth. Today’s passage talks about the One who delivers sinners and gives them eternal life.
The Lord, who has the power to raise the dead, spoke to Martha. Jesus responds to those who believe in him, those whom he loves. The Lord of Salvation and Life speaks to the children of God who believe in him and have received eternal life. Our Lord responds to our faith. He reveals his power to those who believe. Jesus says, “Your brother will rise again” (v.23). This means that Lazarus, who is now dead, will rise from the tomb to live. This is the power of the Lord who turns death to life. The Lord makes possible all impossible situations. The Lord delivers us from our difficult and impossible circumstances. There is nothing that Jesus cannot do. Therefore, we must believe in him and entrust our cares to him. Jesus Christ resolves and saves. God let the Israelites cross through the middle of the sea. The Lord turned water into wine. Our problems are taken care of in the Lord’s hand.
Martha did not understand Jesus correctly. She believed that Lazarus will be raised again in the resurrection on the last day (v. 24). But Jesus meant that Lazarus who is dead will rise again now. We must understand the word of the Lord, that is, the Bible correctly. It is similar to building a house on a rock, a strong foundation. Incorrect understanding of the word of the Lord is similar to writing down a wrong answer instead of the right answer on an exam. Correct understanding is like choosing the correct answers. But Martha was a woman of faith. She believed in the resurrection. Believing in Jesus is very important. We also believe in the resurrection. We believe that when the Lord comes, we will be resurrected and live eternally with him in the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus answers Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (v.25-26). This word of Jesus is the gospel, the salvation, and the truth. Those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the resurrection and the life, live even though they die. The way to overcome the power of death is by faith. We head toward the resurrection and eternal life through the path of faith. We must remember that only our Lord Jesus is the resurrection and the life. The way to reach the resurrection and eternal life is through forgiveness of sins. We can attain life and resurrection when our sins are washed away. The Lord Jesus of the Cross and the Resurrection is the One who washes away our sins. We receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of righteousness through faith in the Lord. And we receive the power of eternal life and resurrection.
Jesus is the resurrection. Jesus dies on the cross but he rises again, because he is the resurrection. The One who is the resurrection rises again. We humans who are not the resurrection cannot resurrect on our own. We can be resurrected only if the One who is the resurrection enables us. Any other being who is not the resurrection cannot make people rise again. The Lord Jesus, who is the resurrection, is the true Savior.
Jesus is the life. Life has nothing to do with death. Life means that death is powerless. Jesus is eternal life. He is our life. He is the life of those who believe in him. Life means freedom from sin and death. Life is the sure evidence and guarantee of salvation. That we received eternal life means the fulfillment of God’s will (John 6:40). God gives us eternal life when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. That is God’s perfect will.
Jesus says that whoever lives by believing in him will never die (v.26). The way for sinners to receive eternal life by faith (John 6:47-48). For us to be liberated from death, we must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Whoever does not believe dies in their sin. The way to eternal life through obstacles of sin and death is faith. Faith is the path through which the power of the cross and the resurrection work. The Lord of Life gives eternal life to those who believe in him (John 10:28). Therefore, he requires faith from us that we may receive eternal life.
Verse 27 is Martha’s confession of faith. It is her response to Jesus. We also should respond to the word of Jesus and say our confession. Our truthful confession brings us salvation. We must believe that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God. We must confess that Jesus is our Savior. We must believe that there is no other Savior, the Messiah except Jesus Christ. We receive the gift of righteousness, salvation, the Holy Spirit, and eternal life by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith is the way to live eternally and enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, those who believe in the Lord are blessed. Believers in Jesus receive blessings. Let us live by faith. For all the blessings of the Father are given through faith.
