어떤 사람은 많은 재산을 가지고 있으면서도 만족하지 못한다. 또 어떤 사람은 통장에 돈이 많아도 기쁘지 않다. 왜냐하면 그는 더 많은 것을 원하기 때문이다. 인간의 욕심은 끝이 없다. 오늘 읽은 말씀은 만족하는 삶에 대해서 교훈한다. 소유의 많고 적음을 떠나서 만족하고 행복한 삶이 있다.
믿음의 사람이 만족하는 마음이 있으면 경건이 큰 이익이 된다고 성경은 말한다(6). 믿음의 삶은 영생의 삶이다. 그리스도인의 삶은 하나님 아버지가 필요한 것을 주시는 삶이다. 하나님 아버지는 주 예수 안에서 사랑하는 자녀인 우리에게 필요한 모든 것을 공급한다. 하나님 아버지는 우리의 쓸 것을 다 아시고 필요한 때에 공급한다. 만물의 주인이신 하나님 아버지는 우리의 부모처럼 우리의 필요를 다 아신다. 그래서 우리는 삶에 필요한 모든 것을 받아서 누릴 수 있다. 하나님 아버지께서 그것을 보장하셨다(롬 8:32). 자기 아들까지 아끼지 않고 우리를 위해서 내어 주신 하나님은 아들과 함께 모든 것을 우리에게 주신다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 하나님은 사랑하는 자기 백성 이스라엘에게 40년 동안 만나를 공급하셨다. 하나님은 값 없이 양식과 고기와 물을 주셨다. 그런데 그들은 만족하지 못했다. 그들은 하나님을 원망했다.
인간은 현실에 만족하지 않으면 항상 불평한다. 그래서 성경은 우리가 만족하는 마음이 있어야 한다고 말한다. 사람은 마음에서 만족하면 원망하지 않는다. 본질적으로 만족은 마음에 있다. 사람은 많은 소유와 좋은 형편에서도 마음에서 만족하지 못하면 만족할 수 없다. 형편과 상황이 어려워도 마음에서 만족하면 사람은 만족한다. 우리는 소유의 많고 적음과 상관없이 만족하는 법을 배워야 한다. 바울은 항상 모든 상황에서 만족하는 비결을 배웠다(빌 4:11-13). 형편이 좋고 나쁠 때, 주리거나 배부름에 상관없이 항상 만족했다. 이러한 만족은 경건한 생활에 큰 이익을 준다. 우리의 믿음의 삶이 복되고 큰 유익이 되려면 마음에서 만족해야 한다.
오늘 성경 본문은 말한다. 우리가 세상에 올 때에 아무것도 가지고 오지 않았다. 이 세상에 태어나면서 어떤 소유를 손에 쥐고 온 사람은 없다. 모든 사람은 빈손으로 왔다. 부자나 가난한 사람이나 똑 같다. 태어난 후의 환경은 다를 수 있지만 사람은 황금과 큰 부를 가지고 태어나지 않는다. 역시 마찬가지로 사람은 죽을 때에도 가져 가는 것이 없다. 사람은 태어날 때나 죽을 때나 빈손이다. 그래서 우리는 이러한 하나님의 섭리를 기억해야 한다.
주님은 우리에게 말씀한다. 믿음의 사람, 하나님의 자녀인 우리는 먹을 것과 입을 옷이 있으면 만족해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 음성에 귀를 기울여야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 마음에 새겨야 한다. 사실 거의 모든 사람은 입을 것과 먹을 것을 가지고 있다. 우리 중에 오늘 먹을 양식과 입을 옷이 없는 사람은 없다. 그렇다면 우리는 말씀에 순종하여 만족해야 한다. 우리의 만족은 소유의 넉넉한데 있지 않다. 우리의 만족은 믿음에 있다. 우리의 만족은 주 안에서 하나님의 아버지께 있다. 우리의 만족은 성령과 말씀에 있다. 성령은 우리 마음에 참 만족을 준다. 주님은 하늘에 속한 신령한 복과 소유로 우리에게 만족을 준다.
가난한 사람이 먹고 입을 것과 집이 있으면 좋겠다고 생각한다. 그런데 그가 부자가 되고 나서는 만족하지 못한다. 그는 소유에 대한 욕망이 생긴다. 그래서 그는 더 많이 얻고, 더 많이 가지고 싶어 한다. 그는 돈과 재물에 대한 유혹에 빠진다. 그는 탐심을 가지고 우상숭배를 한다. 그는 욕심 때문에 믿음과 경건한 삶에서 벗어나 죄를 짓는다. 그는 가시나무 밭에 떨어진 씨앗처럼 돈과 재물의 유혹에 빠져서 열매를 맺지 못한다. 성경은 말한다. “부하려 하는 자들은 시험과 올무와 여러가지 어리석고 해로운 정욕에 욕심에 떨어지나니 곧 사람으로 파멸과 멸망에 빠지게 하는 것이라 돈을 사랑함이 일만악의 뿌리가 되나니 이것을 탐내는 자들이 미혹을 받아 믿음에서 떠나 많은 근심으로써 자기를 찔었도다”(딤전 6:9-10). 부와 돈에 대한 유혹은 사람을 파멸로 이끈다.
성경은 말한다. “돈을 사랑하지 말고 있는 바를 족한 줄로 알라 그가 친히 말씀하시기를 내가 결코 너희를 버리지 아니하며 너희를 떠나지 아니하리라 하셨느니라”(히 13:5). 이 말씀은 현재의 형편에 만족하라는 교훈이다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 함께 하셔서 도우시고 채워 주시기 때문이다. 주님은 우리가 염려없이 살기를 원하신다(마 6:25-34). 우리는 시편 23편 1절의 말씀처럼 ‘주님이 나의 목자이기 때문에 부족함이 없다’라고 고백해야 한다. 부족함이 없는 삶은 주 안에서 믿음의 사람인 우리에게 있다. 우리의 행복은 소유의 많고 적음에 있지 않음을 기억해야 한다. 우리는 믿음으로 살면서 있는 것으로 만족하며 감사하며 살자.
Life of Contentment (1 Timothy 6:6-8)
There are people who have great wealth but are unsatisfied. And there are people who have a lot of money saved but are not happy. It is because they desire more. Human greed is endless. Today’s passage teaches us about being content. Regardless of the amount of possession, there is a life that is content and happy.
The Bible says that when believers have a content heart, godliness is great gain (v.6). The life of faith is the life of eternal life. The life of Christians is one in which God fills their needs. God the Father provides the needs of his beloved children in the Lord Jesus. He knows what we need and provides it when we need it. The Father, who is the Lord of All, knows all our needs just as parents do. So we are able to receive from him what we need and enjoy it. God the Father promised it (Romans 8:32). He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us, will, along with him, graciously give us all things. We should remember that God gave manna for 40 years to the Israelites, his beloved people. He freely gave food and meat. But they were not satisfied. They complained to God.
When people are not satisfied with their life, they complain. That is why the Bible tells us to have a heart of contentment. When we are content, we do not complain. Fundamentally, contentment is in the heart. When we are not content in our heart even with a lot of possessions, we cannot be content. On the other hand, when our heart is content even in poverty and difficulties, then we are content. We should learn to be content regardless of the amount of possessions. Paul learned to be content in all circumstances (Philippians 4:11-13). He was content whether he was in need or he had plenty, or whether he was well fed or hungry. Such contentment is a great gain to godly living. For our life of faith to be blessed and beneficial, we should be content in our heart.
Today’s passage says that we brought nothing into the world. There is no one who came to the world with some possession. They all came into the world empty-handed. This applies to the wealthy and the poor. Environments after birth may be different, but people do not bring gold or great wealth with them when they are born. Likewise, they take nothing out of the world when they die. When they are born or when they die, they are empty-handed. We should remember such Providence of God.
The Lord tells us that we, the believers and the children of God, should be content if we have something to eat and something to wear. We must pay careful attention to what he says. We should write his words in our hearts. People generally have something to eat and something to wear. Among us, there is no one who does not have something to eat or wear today. Then we should obey the Lord’s word and be content. Our contentment is not in great amounts of wealth. Our contentment is in faith. It is in God the Father in the Lord. It is in the Holy Spirit and the word of God. The Holy Spirit gives us true contentment. The Lord gives us contentment as the divine blessing and possession that belong to heaven.
A poor person wishes for something to eat and wear, and a house to live in. However, when he becomes wealthy, he is not satisfied. He becomes greedy for more wealth. He pursues more gain and more possessions. He falls into the temptation of money and wealth. In his greed, he commits idolatry. He sins, deserting faith and godly living, because of greed. Like the seed that fell among thorns, he does not bear fruit due to the desire for riches. The Bible says, “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:9-10). The temptation of wealth and riches lead people to destruction.
The Bible says, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5). This word teaches us to be content with our current situation, because God is with us and he helps us and fills us. The Lord wants us to live without worries (Matthew 6:25-34). We should confess as written in Psalms 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” As believers in the Lord Jesus, we have a life that does not lack. We should remember that our happiness does not come from how much possession we have. Let us live by faith, being content and thankful for what we have.
