어떤 사람이 길을 가다가 강도를 만났다. 강도들은 그 사람을 거의 죽을 정도로 상처를 입혔다. 한 율법사가 쓰러져 있는 그 사람을 보고 그냥 지나갔다. 역시 한 레위인도 그를 보고 그냥 지나갔다. 그 후에 선한 사마리아인 강도를 만난 사람을 보았다. 그는 쓰러져 있는 그 사람을 불쌍히 여겼다. 그래서 그는 치료해 주고 돌보아 주었다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 나사로 가정에 대한 주님의 긍휼을 보여 준다.
마르다는 앞에서 예수님의 질문에 대한 신앙고백을 했다(25-27). 그리고 마르다는 돌아가서 자매 마리아에게 조용히 말했다. “선생님이 오셔서 너를 부르신다”(28). 주님은 마리아를 부르셨다. 마리아를 부르신 주님은 오늘 나를 부르신다. 주님은 복음과 성경 말씀을 통해서 나를 간절히 부르신다. 주님은 우리가 주의 음성을 듣고 응답하기를 원하신다. 마리아는 급히 예수님을 만나려고 갔다. 마리아는 주님의 부르심에 바로 응답했다. 우리 또한 주님의 음성을 듣고 신속히 응답해야 한다. 주님의 음성은 하나님의 말씀이다. 주님의 음성은 나를 살리는 생명의 음성이다. 주님의 음성은 나를 거룩하게 하고, 강건하게 하고, 의의 길로 인도하는 음성이다. 우리는 주님의 음성을 가장 귀하게 여기면서 즐겁게 들어야 한다.
예수님은 마르다를 만났던 장소에 계셨다(30). 마리아과 함께 있던 유대인들은 마리아를 따라갔다(31). 마리아는 급히 예수님이 계신 곳에 왔다. 마리아는 예수님의 발 앞에 엎드려서 말했다. “주님께서 여기 계셨다면 나사로가 죽지 아니하였을 것입니다”(32). 지금 마리아의 마음은 심히 슬프고 고통스럽다. 죽음보다 더 크고 고통스러운 일은 없다. 마리아는 아프고 아프고 또 아프다. 마리아는 쓰라린 마음으로 주님께 말했다. 마리아는 나사로의 죽음을 참기 힘들어 하며 괴로워하고 있다. 마리아는 주님이 조금 일찍 오셨다면 나사로가 안 죽었을 것이라고 하소연 한다. 그는 나사로의 죽음을 매우 안타깝게 생각하고 있다. 마리아는 지금 나사로가 죽어서 무덤에 있다는 사실이 괴롭고 슬프다. 마리아의 말은 나사로가 죽지 않았다면 얼마나 좋았을까 하는 절박한 마음의 표현이다. 마리아는 지금의 현실이 고통스럽다. 그 현실은 회복될 수 없는 상황이기 때문이다. 하지만 마리아는 주님이 계시다는 사실을 믿어야 한다. 구원자가 바로 그와 함께 하고 있다. 그의 고통스러운 문제는 온전히 해결 될 것이다.
우리도 역시 그렇다. 우리는 앞에 놓인 해결하기 어려운 문제 앞에서 좌절한다. 우리는 극복하기 힘든 시련 속에서 낙담하고 주저 앉는다. 우리는 마음에 큰 고통을 느끼고 괴로워 한다. 우리는 눈 앞이 캄캄하고 한숨을 짓는다. 하지만 구원하시는 주님이 계시다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 주가 나를 구원하신다.
예수님은 마리아와 함께 온 유대인들이 우는 것을 보고 마음 아파하시고 불쌍히 여기셨다(33). 주님은 마리아의 슬픔을 같이 느끼셨다. 주님은 함께 슬퍼하고 함께 우셨다(35). 주님은 우리의 고통과 슬픔을 외면하지 않으신다. 나를 위해서 목숨까지 버리신 사랑과 긍휼의 주님은 나의 마음을 헤아려 주신다. 주님은 내가 울 때에 같이 울고, 내가 고통스러워 할 때에 함께 마음 아파하신다. 주님은 나를 결코 혼자 두지 않으신다. 긍휼이 풍성하신 주님은 나를 불쌍히 여기신다. 주님은 나를 도우시고, 힘을 주시고, 구원해 주신다. 그래서 우리는 시련 가운데서 혼자가 아님을 기억해야 한다. 나와 함께 하시는 주님, 나를 사랑하시고 긍휼히 여기시는 주님이 나를 구원하신다는 믿음으로 나가야 한다. 주님께 대한 믿음이 나를 구원한다. 우리는 믿음에 굳게 서서 담대히 나가야 한다. 주님은 나의 믿음에 응답하시고 역사하시기 때문이다.
유대인들은 예수님이 눈물을 흘리시는 것을 보고 말했다. “예수님이 얼마나 나사로를 사랑했는가” 주님은 나사로를 사랑했다(36). 주님이 사랑하는 나사로가 죽었다. 주님은 사랑하는 나사로의 문제를 해결한다. 주님은 나를 사랑한다. 주님은 나를 위해서 죽으시고 다시 살아 나셨다. 나를 사랑하는 주님은 나의 모든 것, 내 삶의 모든 것, 나의 모든 문제와 시련을 해결해 주시기를 원하신다. 그것은 우리가 사랑하는 가족이나 자녀의 문제를 온 마음으로 해결하는 것과 같다. 주님은 나의 문제와 상황에 마음을 두시고 관심을 갖고 계신다. 주님은 나의 죄와 사망의 문제를 해결해 주신 것처럼, 나의 모든 문제를 해결해 주신다. 그래서 우리는 이러한 확신을 가지고 주 앞에 서야 한다. 우리는 주님의 사랑에 응답하여 주님을 사랑해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 사랑하고 순종해야 한다. 우리는 주님을 존귀하게 여기고 기쁘게 해야 한다. 바로 거기에 주님의 사랑과 응답과 구원의 역사가 있다.
The Mercy of the Lord (John 11:28-37)
A man met robbers on the road. The robbers beat him up until he was half dead. An expert in the law saw the man collapsed on the road but just passed by. A Levite also passed by the man. Then, a good samaritan came and saw the man beaten. He had mercy on him, treated and cared for him. Today’s passage shows the mercy of the Lord towards Lazarus’ family.
Martha had confessed her faith in response to Jesus’ question (v25-27). Then, she went back to Mary and told her quietly, “The teacher is here and is calling you” (v28). The Lord called Mary. The same Lord who called Mary also calls us today. The Lord calls us through the Gospel and the Word of God. The Lord wants us to hear his voice and respond. Mary quickly went to meet Jesus. Mary responded immediately to Jesus’ calling. We must also respond quickly to the Lord’s calling. The voice of the Lord is the Word of God. The voice of the Lord is the voice of life that saves us. The Lord’s voice makes us holy, strong, and leads us to righteousness. We must cherish the Lord’s voice and listen to it joyfully.
Jesus was at the place he met Martha (v30). Those who were with Mary followed her (v31). Mary quickly went to where Jesus was. She fell at the Lord’s feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died” (v32). Mary’s heart was in pain and grief. There is no pain greater than that caused by death. Mary was hurt. She came to Jesus and spoke with a broken heart. Mary was in pain and grief from the death of Lazarus. Mary told Jesus that if he had come earlier, Lazarus would not have died. She felt very bad about Lazarus’ death. The fact that Lazarus was lying in the tomb made her painful and sad. What Mary said to Jesus shows how much she wished that Lazarus was alive. The situation was too painful for her because it seemed irreversible. However, Mary must believe that Jesus is there. That the Savior is right next to her. And thus all her pain will be wiped away.
Like Mary, we also become dismayed when we are faced with a problem that is too hard to solve. We are discouraged by the struggles that are hard to overcome. We feel immense pain. We sigh because we cannot see a way out. However, we must remember that Jesus can save. The Lord saves us.
Jesus saw Mary and others who followed her weeping and was deeply moved in spirit and troubled (v33). Jesus felt the pain of Mary. Jesus wept with her (v35). The Lord never ignores our pain and sadness. The Lord of love and mercy who gave up his life for us understands our heart. The Lord weeps when we weep, and feels the pain we feel. The Lord never leaves us alone. The Lord who is full of mercy always has mercy on us. The Lord helps, strengthens, and saves us. Thus, we must remember that we are not alone in our struggles. We must stride forward in faith, knowing that the Lord, who is with us, loves us and has mercy on us, will save us. Our faith toward the Lord saves us. We must go forward courageously in faith. The Lord will respond to our faith and work in our lives.
The Jews saw Jesus weeping and said, “See how he loved him” (v36). Lazarus whom Jesus loved had died. Jesus resolved the death of Lazarus whom he loved. The Lord loves us. The Lord died for us and was resurrected for us.The Lord who loves us wants to resolve all of the problems and hardships of our lives. It is like how one would help their beloved family and children who are struggling as best as they can. The Lord cares about our problems and situations. The Lord resolves our problem of sin and death and will resolve all of our other problems too. We must stand before the Lord with confidence that the Lord will save. We must respond to the Lord’s love and love the Lord. We must love the Lord’s Word and obey it. We must revere the Lord and please him. That is how we see the Lord’s love and salvation.
