로마의 백부장이 있었다. 그 백부장의 종이 중풍으로 누워 있었다. 백부장은 종이 치료받기를 원했다. 그래서 그는 예수님께 부탁했다. 그는 ‘주님께서 말씀으로만 하면 내 종이 나을 것입니다.’ 이 말을 들은 예수님은 그의 믿음을 칭찬했다. 주님은 그가 믿은대로 말씀으로 치료해 주셨다. 우리는 주의 말씀의 능력 곧 성경의 권능을 알아야 한다. 오늘 성경 본문은 예수님께서 회당장 야이로의 죽은 딸을 말씀으로 살리는 내용이다.
주님의 말씀은 하나님의 말씀이다. 예수님의 말씀은 구원의 능력이 있다. 주님의 말씀은 생명의 권능이 있다. 주님의 말씀은 진리의 말씀이다. 주님은 말씀은 의롭고 거룩한 말씀이다. 회당장의 집에서 사람들이 와서 야이로에게 말한다(49). ‘당신의 딸이 죽었습니다. 선생님을 더 괴롭게 하지 마십시오’ 죽었다는 것은 숨이 끝어졌다는 뜻이다. 죽은 사람은 호흡이 멈춰서 더 이상 움직임이 없다. 죽음은 이 세상에서의 삶이 끝났다는 의미다. 사람들은 딸이 죽었으니 예수님께서 더 이상 할 일이 없다고 말한다. 그들은 예수님께서 야이로의 집에 오실 필요가 없다고 말한다.
사람은 자기의 능력과 관점에서 말한다. 죽음은 끝이라고 사람들은 생각한다. 그래서 사람들은 더 이상 불가능한 상황이라고 말한다. 사람들은 죽음 앞에서 ‘방법이 없다. 안 된다. 어렵다’고 말한다. 그렇다면 예수님의 생각은 무엇일까요? 예수님도 사람처럼 말할까요? 그렇지 않다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들 구주로서의 권능을 갖고 계신다. 주님은 사람처럼 말하지 않는다. 주님은 ‘다 된다. 모두 가능하다. 불가능하지 않다. 해결된다’라고 말한다.
예수님은 이 상황에 대해서 어떻게 말할까요? 예수님은 ‘두려워하지 말고 믿기만 하라 그리하면 딸이 구원을 얻으리라’고 말한다(50). 예수님은 죽음에 관하여 두려워할 필요가 없다고 말한다. 이 말씀은 야이로의 딸이 죽었지만 문제가 없다는 말이다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 우리는 죽음을 두려워 할 필요가 없다. 우리는 주님과 함께 영원히 살 것이기 때문이다. 우리는 어떤 문제를 두고 두려워 하고 염려하지 말아야 한다. 우리가 해야 할 일은 주를 믿는 것이다. 주님은 우리에게 믿음을 요구하신다. 주님은 우리가 온전히 주님을 의지하고 신뢰하기를 원하신다. 그래서 우리는 믿음으로 주님 앞에 엎드려 기도해야 한다. 우리는 주의 말씀을 의지하여 오직 믿음으로 나가야 한다. 주님은 야이로에게 ‘네가 믿으면 딸의 죽음은 해결되고 구원을 얻게 될 것이다’라고 말한다. 우리가 주님의 말씀을 믿고 순종하면 구원이 얻는다. 믿음은 내 문제를 해결하는 통로다.
예수님은 베드로, 야고보, 요한과 함께 야이로의 집으로 가셨다. 사람들은 아이의 죽음 앞에서 울며 통곡했다. 이것은 죽음에 대한 많은 사람들의 반응이다. 하지만 예수님은 달랐다. 주님은 울며 통곡하는 사람들에게 ‘울지 말라 죽은 것이 아니라 잔다’(52)라고 말한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀에 귀를 기울여야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀 곧 구원과 진리, 복과 형통의 말씀을 들어야 한다. 우리는 사람의 말보다 하나님의 말씀 곧 성경 말씀을 들어야 한다. 주님은 말씀을 통해서 우리에게 모든 은혜와 복을 주시기 때문이다. 예수님은 아이가 죽은 것이 아니라 자고 있으니 울지 않아도 된다고 말한다. 주님의 말씀은 진실하고 권능이 있다. 주님의 말씀은 사람의 말보다 권능이 있다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 말씀, 성경의 권능을 믿어야 한다. 주님의 말씀은 전능의 능력을 가진 구원의 말씀이다.
사람들은 예수님의 말을 믿지 않고 비웃었다(53). 그들은 예수님의 말씀보다 죽음이라는 현실에 마음을 두고 있다. 그래서 그들에게는 주님의 말씀이 믿어지지 않았다. 우리가 우리 앞에 있는 문제에 집중하면 믿음에 굳게 서기 어렵다. 우리는 상황이나 문제보다 주님의 말씀에 집중해야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 우리 마음에 간직하고 붙들어야 한다. 우리는 주님의 말씀을 믿고 의지해야 한다. 거기에 구원이 있기 때문이다.
예수님은 죽은 아이의 손을 잡고 말씀한다. ‘아이야 일어나라’(54). 예수님은 자신이 말씀한대로 자는 아이를 깨운다. 아이는 예수님의 말씀대로 바로 일어났다(55). 주님의 말씀은 어떤 능력이 있는가? 예수님의 말씀은 죽은 자를 살리는 능력이 있다. 주님의 말씀은 불가능이 없다. 우리는 주님의 말씀 곧 성경을 믿어야 한다. 주님은 성경을 통해서 오늘 나에게 말씀한다. 그래서 우리는 성경에서 주님의 말씀을 듣고 배워야 한다. 주님의 능력은 주의 말씀에 있다는 사실을 기억해야 한다. 우리가 주의 능력을 얻고 구원을 받기 위해서 성경을 읽고 배우고 순종해야 한다. 주님의 능력은 성경 가운데 있기 때문이다. 주님의 말씀이 나를 살리고 구원을 얻게 한다.
The Power of the Word (Luke 8:49-55)
There was a Roman centurion. His servant was lying paralyzed. The centurion wished for his servant to be healed. So he asked Jesus for help. He said, “My servant will be healed if only you speak the word.” Jesus complimented the centurion for his great faith and healed the servant by his word. We must understand the power of the Lord’s Word, the power of the Scriptures. Today’s passage is about Jesus raising up the dead daughter of Jairus, a synagogue ruler.
The Word of the Lord is the Word of God. The Word of Jesus has the power of salvation. The Word of the Lord has the power of life. The Word of the Lord is the word of truth. The Word of the Lord is a righteous and holy word. People came from Jairus’ house to tell him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the teacher anymore” (v49). To be dead means they no longer have breath. A dead person does not breathe and cannot move. Death means that life on earth has come to an end. People told Jairus that since his daughter is dead, there is nothing Jesus could do. They told him that it is no longer necessary for Jesus to come to his house.
People speak from the limit of their power and perspective. People think that death is the end. They think that it is no longer possible to be saved. Before death, the people tell Jairus, “There is no way. It is impossible. It is too difficult.” However, what does Jesus think about the situation? Does Jesus think like the people? No. Jesus, as the Son of God, has the power of a Savior. The Lord does not speak like the people. The Lord tells us, “Everything is possible. Nothing is impossible. It will be done.”
How did Jesus talk about this situation? Jesus said, “Do not be afraid, just believe, and your daughter will be healed” (v50). Jesus said that we do not need to fear death. This means that even though the daughter of Jairus is dead, there is no problem. This applies to us today. We do not need to fear death. This is because we will live eternally with the Lord. We must not fear problems we face. Our duty is to trust in the Lord. The Lord wants us to believe. He wants us to trust in him completely. So we must come before the Lord in faith and pray. We must trust in the Lord’s Word and go forward in faith. The Lord told Jairus, “If you believe, your daughter will live and be saved.” When we believe in the Word of the Lord and obey, we receive salvation. Faith is the way to resolve our problems.
Jesus went to the house of Jairus with Peter, James and John. People were weeping over the death of the child. This is the reaction of many people towards death. However, Jesus was different. Jesus told the people, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but asleep” (v52). We must pay attention to the Word of the Lord. We must listen to the Lord’s Word, the word of salvation and truth, blessings and prosperity. We must listen to the Word of God before the word of people. This is because God gives us all grace and blessings through the Word of the Lord. Jesus said that the child is not dead but asleep, so you do not need to weep. The Word of the Lord is true and powerful. The Word of the Lord is more powerful than the word of people. Thus, we must believe in the Word of the Lord, the power of the Scriptures. The Word of the Lord is the word of salvation that has the power to save.
The people did not believe in Jesus, but laughed (v53). These people had in mind the reality of death instead of the Word of Jesus. So they could not believe the Lord’s Word. When we focus too much on the problem before us, it makes it hard for us to stand in faith. We must focus on the Word of the Lord instead of the situation or the problem. We must keep the Word of the Lord in our heart. We must believe and trust in the Lord’s Word. This is where salvation is.
Jesus took hold of the child’s hand and said, “get up” (v54). According to the Word of Jesus, the child got up (v55). What kind of power is in the Word of the Lord? It has the power to save the dead. There is nothing impossible with the Word of the Lord. We must believe in the Word of the Lord, the Scriptures. The Lord speaks to us today through the Scriptures. Thus, we must hear and learn the Lord’s Word from the Bible. We must remember that the power of the Lord comes from his Word. To experience the Lord’s power and be saved, we must read the Bible, learn and obey it. The power of the Lord is in the Bible. The Word of the Lord raises and delivers us.
