어떤 사람이 일을 하다가 3층에서 떨어졌다. 그런데 그는 거의 상처를 입지 않았다. 그는 하나님 앞에 엎드려서 기도했다. 그는 ‘하나님이 왜 나를 구해 주었을까. 거기에는 무슨 이유가 있을 거야’라고 생각했다. 결국 그는 목사가 되는 소명을 받았다. 그는 신학을 공부하고 목사가 되었다. 우리를 죄와 사망의 늪에서 건져 주시는 분이 누구일까요. 오늘 읽은 성경은 그것을 말해 준다.
바울은 주 예수 그리스도께 감사하고 있다(12). 왜냐하면 주님이 자기를 충성스럽게 여기고 직분을 맡겨 주셨기 때문이다. 바울은 사도가 되기 전에는 자신이 비방자, 박해자, 폭행자였다고 고백한다(13). 하지만 주님은 그를 긍휼히 여기셨다. 주님은 그가 행한대로 갚지 않으셨다. 왜냐하면 그가 주를 믿기 전에 알지 못하고 행하였기 때문이다. 주님은 긍휼이 풍성하다. 우리가 주님을 믿기 전에 알지 못하고 행한 일을 용서한다. 우리가 주님 앞에 엎드려 죄를 고백하고 회개하면 주님은 우리를 용서한다. 그래서 우리는 죄를 속히 떠나야 한다. 우리는 긍휼과 사랑이 풍성하신 주님을 믿고 순종하며 살아야 한다.
주님은 은혜와 사랑과 긍휼이 풍성하시다. 우리의 삶은 모두 주님의 은혜다. 우리는 하나님의 은혜와 사랑으로 하나님의 자녀가 되었다. 우리는 주님의 크고 놀라우신 은혜와 사랑에 감사한다. 우리 주님의 은혜는 믿음을 통해서 주어진다(14). 우리가 주 예수 그리스도를 구주로 믿으면 죄 사함의 은혜가 주어진다. 믿지 않으면 속죄의 은혜는 없다. 죄인 된 우리가 주를 믿으면 값없이 주시는 하나님의 은혜가 임한다. 하나님이 주 예수를 믿음으로 주시는 모든 복은 은혜로 주어진다. 우리의 속죄함, 의롭게 되는 것, 죽음에서 해방 되는 것, 영생, 성령을 받는 것, 천국, 모든 신령한 복은 하나님의 은혜다. 이러한 은혜는 돈으로 계산할 수 없다. 믿음으로 말미암은 모든 복은 값없이 주시는 하나님의 은혜다. 주님의 풍성한 은혜는 믿는 자에게 주어진다. 믿음의 삶은 은혜의 삶이다.
주님의 값없이 주시는 은혜는 하나님의 사랑으로 주어졌다(14). 사랑의 하나님은 우리를 사랑하셨다. 그래서 하나님은 독생자 예수 그리스도를 세상의 구주로 보내셨다. 하나님의 사랑은 주 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 주어진다. 믿지 않으면 십자가와 부활을 통한 하나님의 사랑을 받을 수 없다. 우리는 주를 믿음으로 하나님의 사랑을 받았다. 우리를 구원하시는 하나님의 사랑이 주님의 넘치는 은혜로 주어졌다. 하나님의 크고 놀라우신 은혜는 믿음과 사랑으로 받는다. 우리는 주님의 말할 수 없는 은혜에 감사하며 살아야 한다.
여기 모든 사람이 받을 만한 진실한 말이 있다(15). 그리스도 예수님은 죄인을 구원하시려고 세상에 임하셨다(15). 모든 사람은 죄인이다. 그래서 나도 죄인이다. 죄인은 스스로 자기 죄를 해결 할 수 없다. 죄는 죄인을 죽음에 이르게 한다. 죄는 하나님의 진노와 심판을 받게 한다. 이 세상에서도 사람이 죄를 지으면 형벌과 고통을 받는다. 죄는 사람의 온갖 질병, 재앙, 불행, 고통, 문제를 가져 온다. 죄는 영혼을 파괴한다. 죄는 멸망과 지옥의 형벌을 가져 온다. 그런데 우리는 그 죄에서 벗어날 길이 없다. 그렇다면 누가 나를 죄에서 건져 줄 것인가. 누가 나를 죄와 사망과 멸망에서 구원해 줄 것인가.
우리를 죄에서 구원해 줄 분은 주 예수 그리스도다. 예수님은 죄인을 구원하기 위해서 세상에 오셨다. 예수님은 말씀하셨다. “나는 의인을 부르러 온 것이 아니요 죄인을 부르러 왔노라”(마 9:13). 예수님이 오시지 않았다면 우리는 죄 가운데서 죽는다. 오직 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도만이 죄인의 구주다. 예수님은 죄가 없으시다(요일 3:5). 죄 없는 분이 죄를 해결한다. 예수님은 영원히 거룩하시고 의로우신 분이시다. 의롭고, 거룩하고, 죄 없는 예수님이 내 죄를 씻기 위하여 십자가에 달려 죽으셨다. 예수님의 십자가에서 흘린 피가 죄를 깨끗하게 한다.
세례 요한은 말했다. “보라 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양이로다”(요 1:29). 주님은 나의 허물과 죄 때문에 찔리시고 상하셨다(사 53:5). 주님은 우리의 죄를 담당했다(사 53:6). 예수님은 하나님의 사랑으로 죄인을 위해서 죽으셨다(롬 5:8). 예수님은 우리 죄를 위한 화목제물이다(요일 2:2). 우리는 기억해야 한다. 예수님은 죄인 된 나를 구원하기 위해서 세상에 오셨다. 예수님은 내 죄를 대신 짊어 지시고 죽으셨다. 그래서 예수님은 나를 죄와 사망에서 건지셨다. 바울은 죄인 중에 괴수인 자신을 예수님이 구원하려고 오셨다고 고백한다. 우리는 내 죄 때문에 세상에 오셔서 십자가에 달려 죽으신 주님의 은혜를 결코 잊어서는 안된다. 우리는 그 은혜에 감사하며 살아야 한다.
Savior of Sinners (1 Timothy 1:14-15)
There was a man who fell from the third floor while working. However, he was not injured. He kneeled before God and prayed. He thought, “Why did God save me? There must be a reason.” He eventually received a calling to become a pastor. He went to theological seminary and became a minister. Who is the One who saves us from the swamp of sin and death? Today’s passage tells us this.
Paul is giving thanks to the Lord Jesus Christ (v.12). He was thankful because the Lord considered him faithful and entrusted him with his work. Paul confesses that before he became an apostle, he was a blasphemer, a persecutor and a violent man (v.13). However, the Lord had mercy on him. He did not repay him according to what he did. For before he believed in the Lord, he acted in ignorance. The Lord is full of compassion. He forgives the deeds that were done in ignorance before we came to believe in him. When we fall down before the Lord, confess our sins and repent, the Lord forgives us. Therefore, we must quickly turn away from sin. We must live by believing in and obeying the Lord, who is full of mercy and love.
The Lord is full of love and mercy. Our life is all the grace of God. We have become the children of God through his grace and love. And we thank God for his great and amazing grace and love. The grace of our Lord is given through faith (v.14). When we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Savior, we receive the grace of the forgiveness of sins. When we do not believe, there is no grace of forgiveness. When we, the sinners, believe in the Lord, we will receive the grace of God that is given free of cost. All blessings that God gives to those who believe in the Lord Jesus will be given by grace. Our forgiveness of sins, becoming righteous, being freed from death, eternal life, receiving the Holy Spirit, the kingdom of heaven, and all the spiritual blessings are the grace of God. We cannot assign monetary value to such grace. All blessings that come through faith are the grace of God given without cost. The Lord’s abundant grace is given to those who believe. The life of faith is the life of grace.
The Lord’s grace was given to us through the love of God (v.14). The God of Love loved us. So he sent his One and Only Son as the Savior of the world. God’s love is given through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. If we do not believe, we cannot receive the love of God through the cross and the resurrection. We received God’s love through faith in the Lord. God’s love that saves us has been given to us through the overflowing grace of the Lord. We receive God’s great and amazing grace through faith and love. We must always give thanks for his indescribable grace.
Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance (v.15). Christ Jesus came to the world to save sinners (v.15). Everyone is a sinner. We are sinners. Sinners cannot deliver themselves from sin. Sin leads sinners to death. Sin makes us receive God’s wrath and judgment. Even in this world, when someone sins, they receive punishment. Sin brings about all kinds of diseases, plagues, misfortunes, troubles, and problems. Sin destroys the soul. It brings about destruction and the punishment of hell. But there is no way to escape sin on our own. Then, who will deliver us from our sins? Who will save us from our sins, death, and destruction?
The One who saves us from sin is the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus came to the world to save sinners. Jesus said, “…I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners” (Matthew 9:13). If Jesus had not come to the world, we would have died in our sins. Only Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is the Savior of sinners. Jesus has no sin (1 John 3:5). The One who is without sin can remove sin. Jesus is forever holy and righteous. Jesus, who is righteous, holy, and without sin, was crucified and died to wash away our sins. Jesus cleanses sin through the blood he shed on the cross.
John the Baptist said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Jesus was pierced and crushed for our transgressions and iniquities (Isaiah 53:5). Jesus bore our sins (Isaiah 53:6). Jesus died through the love of God for sinners. Jesus is the atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 2:2). We must remember that Jesus came to the world to save us sinners. He bore our sins on our behalf and died. And Jesus delivered us from sin and death. Paul confesses that Jesus came to save him, who is the worst of sinners. We must never forget the grace of the Lord, who came to the world and died on the cross for our sins. We must live by giving thanks for the grace.
