어떤 성도가 부모님의 구원을 위해 기도했다. 왜냐하면 그에게는 부모님이 예수를 구주로 믿고 구원받는 것이 간절한 소원이기 때문었다. 그의 소망은 쉽게 이루어지지 않았다. 수십년 후, 부모님이 돌아가시기 전에 예수를 구주로 믿고 영접했다. 그래서 그의 소원이 이루어졌다.
사람은 소망을 가지고 산다. ‘나는 어떤 소망이 없다’라고 생각하는 사람은 거의 없다. 그래서 인간은 소망의 동물이라고 한다. 각 사람은 지금도 더 나은 미래를 소망하며 산다. 소망은 크게 두 종류로 볼 수 있다. 그것은 보이는 것 곧 땅에 있는 것과 보이지 않는 하늘의 소망이다. 불신자는 이 세상에 소망을 두고 산다. 하지만 믿는 사람은 하늘에 있는 영원한 소망을 가지고 산다. 오늘 읽은 성경은 주 안에 있는 성도의 소망을 말한다. 우리는 무엇에 소망을 두고 살아야 하는가. 무엇이 참 소망인가. 성경은 대답한다.
4절은 창조주와 피조물의 관계를 통찰하는 교훈이다. 여호와는 창조주 하나님이다. 하나님은 만물을 지으셨다. 또한 하나님은 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 지으셨다. 하나님은 우리의 구주시며 아버지다. 우리는 피조물로서 구원받은 하나님의 자녀다. 우리는 이 땅에서의 삶의 끝을 알지 못한다. 각 사람의 삶은 끝이 있다. 어떤 사람은 며칠, 몇달, 몇십년이 될 수 있다. 시한부 삶을 사는 사람도 있다. 하지만 그는 정확하게 알지 못한다. 어떤 청년은 갑자기 사고로 죽는다. 그것은 자신이 알지 못한 일이다. 우리는 자신의 종말을 정확하게 알 수 없다. 그것은 하나님의 권한이다. 우리는 ‘나는 70 혹은 90까지 살거야’라고 확신할 수 없다. 하지만 각 사람은 삶의 끝이 있다.
다윗은 자신의 삶의 끝과 연한이 언제인지 알기를 원했다(4). 동시에 다윗은 자신의 연약함을 알기를 소원했다. 다윗은 자신을 지으신 하나님만이 자기의 끝과 연한 그리고 연약함을 알 수 있다고 생각했다. 그래서 하나님께 그것을 알려 주시기를 기도한다. 우리도 마찬가지다. 우리의 삶의 끝과 연한 그리고 연약함은 하나님이 아신다. 사람들은 자기의 종말도 모르고 강한 것처럼 생각하며 산다. 하지만 피조물로서의 인간은 끝이 있는 연약한 존재다. 우리는 다윗처럼 자신의 연약함을 깨닫기 위해서 하나님께 구해야 한다. 높은 권세와 부를 가지고 있다고 해도 인간은 연약한 존재다. 그래서 성경은 모든 사람은 풀이라고 말한다(사 40:6-8). 인간은 풀과 같고, 그 영화는 풀의 꽃과 같다. 풀은 마르고 꽃이 시든다. 인간도 풀처럼 마르고 시든다. 우리는 자신의 연약함을 주님과 성경으로부터 배워야 한다. 사람을 지으신 하나님이 모든 것을 알려 주신다.
다윗은 하나님이 자기의 날을 한 뼘정도 되게 했다고 말한다(5). 한 뼘은 길지 않다. 사실 한 뼘은 매우 짦다. 인간의 날은 한 뼘과 같다. 그것은 순식간에 지나가 버린다. 욥은 자기의 삶이 바람과 경주자처럼 빨리 간다고 고백한다. 아무리 오래 산 사람의 날도 한 뼘 정도다. 우리의 날은 영원하신 하나님과 비교하면 너무 짧다. 그래서 다윗은 자기의 일생은 하나님 앞에서 없는 것 같다고 말한다(5). 우리의 지상 생애는 그만큼 짧다는 말이다. 하루만 사는 하루살이는 사람의 일생에 비교하면 아무것도 아니다. 우리의 인생도 그만큼 짧다는 것을 알아야 한다. 우리는 삶을 어떻게 살아야 하는지를 배워야 한다. 우리는 삶을 성경으로부터 배울 수 있다. 하나님은 정확하고 확실하게 가르쳐 주신다.
다윗은 사람은 든든히 서 있을 때에도 헛되다고 말한다(5). 솔로몬은 모든 것이 헛되다고 말한다(전 1:2). 주님 밖에 있는 삶은 헛되다는 것을 알야 한다. 그의 삶이 든든하고 번영할지라도 무익한 것이다. 다윗은 각 사람은 그림자 같이 다니고, 헛된 일로 소란하며, 재물을 모으지만 누가 차지할지 모든다고 말한다(6). 인간의 삶은 그림자와 같고 실체가 없는 헛된 것과 같다. 우리는 그것을 인식해야 한다. 사람들은 헛된 일로 분주하다. 모은 재물은 주인이신 하나님이 원하는 사람이 차지한다. 그래서 우리는 만물의 주인이신 주님의 뜻대로 살아야 한다.
다윗은 연약하고, 짧고, 헛된 삶에서 참 소망을 말한다. ‘주여 이제 내가 무엇을 바라리요 나의 소망은 주께 있나이다.’ 주 예수 그리스도만이 우리의 소망이다(딤전 1:1). 따라서 주님이 없는 소망은 절망일뿐이다. 오직 참 소망은 우리의 구주이신 예수 그리스도다. 그래서 우리는 주님만을 소망하며 살아야 한다. 우리는 주님께 소망을 두고 올해를 보내고 새해를 맞이해야 한다. 예수님의 소망은 하나님 아버지의 뜻과 일을 성취하는 것이었다(요4:34). 주님의 뜻을 이루는 것이 우리의 소망이 되어야 한다. 나의 일생은 내 뜻이 아닌 주님의 뜻이 성취되는 삶이어야 한다. 이를 위해서 우리는 믿음과 순종의 삶을 살아야 한다.
My Hope (Psalm 39:4-7)
A believer prayed for his parents’ salvation. His eager hope was that his parents would believe in Jesus as their Savior and be saved. But his hope was not fulfilled immediately. After decades, his parents believed and welcomed Jesus as their Savior. His hope was fulfilled.
People live with hope. Rarely are there people who think that they absolutely have no hope. Every person lives with hopes of a better future. Hope can largely be categorized into two types. Hope for what is seen (i.e. things of this world) and hope for what is unseen, or heavenly hope. Unbelievers put their hope in this world. But believers have eternal hope of heaven. Today’s passage talks about the hope of the believers in the Lord. Where should we put our hope? What is true hope? The Bible answers these.
Verse 4 is a lesson that gives insight into the relationship between the Creator and the created. God is the Creator. He created all things. Moreover, he created people in his image. God is our Savior and Father. We are the children of God and the created who were saved. We do not know the end of life in this world. Every person has an end. The end may be in a few days, months, or years. There are terminal patients. However, they do not know the exact length of days. A young man suddenly got into a car accident and died. He did not know about the accident. We all do not know the end of our days. It is in God’s authority. We cannot be certain that we will live until age 70 or 90. But all people will face the end of life.
David wanted to know his life’s end and the number of his days (v.4). At the same time, he wanted to understand how fleeting his life is. He thought only God, who created him, knows his end, the number of his days, and the transience of life. So he prays to God to show him these. Same with us–God knows our life’s end, the number of days and the transience of our lives. People live as if they are strong when they do not know their end of life. But humans, as the Created, are weak beings who have an end. We should also, like David, ask God to let us understand how fleeting our life is. Even though we may have high power or great wealth, we are weak beings. Therefore, the Bible says that all people are grass (Isaiah 40:6-8). People are like grass and their glory is like flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall. Likewise, people wither and fall like grass and flowers of the field. We should learn of our weakness from the Lord and the Bible. God, who created all people, lets us know all things.
David says that God made his days a mere handbreadth (v.5). A handbreadth is not long; it is very short. People’s days are like a handbreadth. They fly by very quickly. Job confesses that his life passes like the wind and a runner swiftly passing by. No matter how long a person lives, their days are a mere handbreadth. Our life is very short compared to the Eternal God. Therefore, David says that the span of his life is as nothing before God (v.5). That is how short our life on earth is. Mayflies that live only a day are nothing compared to the life of a human. We should understand that our life is fleeting. We must then learn how we should live. And we can learn about life through the Bible. God teaches us clearly and accurately.
David says that even those who seem secure are but a breadth (v.5). Solomon says that all things are meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1:2). We must realize that life apart from the Lord is meaningless. Even though their life seems secure and prosperous, it is meaningless. David also says that every person goes around like a phantom, rushes out in vain, and heaps up wealth not knowing whose it will finally be (v.6). Life is like a shadow and meaningless without substance. We should understand this. People are busy over meaningless matters. And all their possessions go to those to whom God wants to give. Therefore, we must live according to the will of the Lord, who is the Lord of All.
David speaks of hope in this fleeting, short, and meaningless life: “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” (v.7). Only the Lord Jesus Christ is our hope (1 Timothy 1:1). Therefore, hope without the Lord is despair. Our true hope is our Savior Jesus Christ. Therefore, we should hope in the Lord and Him only. We should spend the rest of the year and welcome the new year by putting our hope in the Lord. Jesus’ hope was to fulfill God the Father’s will and work (John 4:34). Fulfilling the Lord’s will should be our hope. Our life should not be about fulfilling our own will but the will of the Lord. To live such a life, we should live by faith and obedience.
