운동선수가 금메달을 목에 걸고 시상대에 섰다. 수 많은 사람들이 그에게 찬사를 보낸다. 그는 최고가 되는 영광을 얻었다. 그 영광은 어떻게 얻었을까요. 그것은 수고와 노력이다. 그는 최선을 다해 훈련했다. 그 결과가 금메달의 영광이다. 오늘 본문 성경은 하나님의 영광을 보는 길을 말한다. 우리는 세상의 영광을 보는 사람들이 아니다. 우리는 주 안에서 하나님의 영광을 보는 사람들이다. 우리는 하나님의 영광을 보는 방법을 주님으로부터 배울 수 있다.
예수님은 나사로의 죽음을 두고서 마음에 괴로워하셨다. 주님은 마음에 큰 고통과 슬픔을 느끼셨다(38). 죽음은 슬프고 고통스러운 일이다. 모든 사람은 죽음 앞에서 슬퍼하고 눈물을 흘린다. 어떤 어머니가 아들의 무덤 앞에서 슬프게 운다. ‘아들아, 왜 네가 거기에 있느냐’고 한탄한다. 나사로의 무덤에 오신 주님은 긍휼이 풍성하시다. 주님은 고난과 고통 중에 있는 사람들을 불쌍히 여기신다. 그래서 주님은 많은 사람들을 고통에서 구원해 주셨다. 주님은 죄와 허물로 죽은 우리를 불쌍히 여겨서 구원해 주셨다. 우리도 다른 사람을 불쌍이 여김으로 도와 줄 수 있다. 우리는 긍휼이 풍성하신 주님처럼 남의 고통을 이해하고 나눔으로써 긍휼을 베풀 수 있다.
나사로의 무덤은 굴이었다(38). 그 입구는 돌로 막았다. 이스라엘의 무덤은 주로 바위로 된 굴이었다. 아브라함은 막벨라 굴에 묻혔다(창 25:9). 예수님의 무덤도 바위로 된 굴이었다(마 27:60). 그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 죽은 사람을 땅이나 바위를 판 굴로 된 무덤에 두었다.
예수님은 무덤 입구를 막은 돌을 옮기라고 말했다. 그 때에 나사로의 누이 마르다가 예수님께 말했다. “죽은 지 4일이 되었습니다. 그래서 냄새가 납니다”(39). 마르다는 눈으로 보는 현실에 매여 있다. 그는 ‘죽어서 4일이나 되었는데요. 무덤에 있는 나사로는 어떻게 될까요. 보십시오. 시체에서 냄새까지 납니다’ 마르다는 현재의 상황과 문제에 집중하고 있다. 이것은 인간의 피조물로서의 한계를 표현하고 있다. 이스라엘 백성들이 홍해바다를 보고 이제 죽었다라고 생각했다. 우리도 지금의 현실과 상황 그리고 문제에 집중한다. 우리는 그것을 바라보고 판단한다. 우리는 좌절하고 낙심하고 괴로워 한다. 마르다도 마찬가지다. 그는 나사로가 방금 죽었다면 혹시 살 수가 있을텐데, 벌써 4일이나 되었고 썩은 냄새까지 나니 어쩌면 좋은가라는 절망적 생각을 하고 있다. 그는 나사로의 죽음은 해결이 불가능한 것으로 생각했을 수 있다. 하지만 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 구원하시는 주님이 계시다는 사실을 잊지 말아야 한다. 우리가 만난 문제는 주님이 해결하신다. 나를 사랑하시고, 나를 위해서 죽으시고, 살아나신 주님이 도우시고 구원하신다.
예수님은 마르다의 말을 들으시고 대답한다. “내 말이 네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 보리라 하지 않았느냐”(40). 우리는 주님의 말씀을 마음에 새기고 기억해야 한다. 주님의 말씀은 사람의 말이 아니다. 주님의 말씀은 전능한 말씀이다. 주님의 말씀은 모든 것이 가능하다. 주님은 말씀으로 모든 병을 고치시고 죽은자를 살리셨다. 주님의 말씀은 구원의 능력이 있다. 하나님은 아브라함에게 말씀하신대로 이스라엘을 애굽에서 구원했다. 하나님은 말씀대로 다윗을 사울왕의 손에서 구원했다. 주님의 말씀은 우리의 모든 문제와 환경 가운데서 구원하시는 능력이 있다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 말씀을 믿는다.
주님은 마르다에게 말씀한다. ‘마르다야, 너는 내 말을 믿어야 한다. 너는 내가 말한대로 될 것을 믿어야 한다. 너는 죽은 나사로가 살아날 것을 믿어야 한다. 네가 믿어야 하나님의 영광을 볼 것이다.’ 예수님은 앞에서 주님을 믿는 자는 죽어도 살 것이라고 말씀하셨다(25). 예수님은 나사로가 죽었지만, 무덤에 4일 있었지만, 썩은 냄새가 나지만, 너는 다시 살아날 것을 믿어야 한다고 말씀한다.
우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리가 하나님의 구원의 영광을 보려면 믿어야 한다는 사실이다. 우리가 믿지 않으면 하나님의 영광을 볼 수 없다. 주님은 우리에게 믿음을 원하신다. 믿음은 하나님의 능력을 가져 온다. 그래서 믿는 사람은 죄와 사망을 이기고 영생한다. 믿음은 모든 고난, 문제, 세상, 시험을 이기는 지름길이다. 믿음은 구원을 가져 온다. 인간은 믿음으로 구원을 받는다. 믿음은 주님의 능력으로 역사하시는 하나님의 영광을 보는 길이다. 우리는 구원을 받고 하나님의 영광을 보기 위해서 믿어야 한다. 오직 믿음으로 나가자. 그래서 우리는 승리하고, 구원을 얻고, 하나님의 영광을 보자.
The Way to See God’s Glory (John 11:38-40)
An athlete wore a gold medal around the neck and stood on the podium. Many people in the audience burst into applause. He gained the honor of being the greatest. How did he come to gain the honor? It came with hard work and effort. He gave it his all when he was training. The outcome was the honor of receiving a gold medal. Today’s passage talks about the way to seeing the glory of God. We are not people who seek the glory of the world. We are people who seek the glory of God in Christ the Lord. We can learn the way to seeing God’s glory through Jesus.
Jesus was deeply moved at the death of Lazarus. He was moved in spirit and troubled (v.38). Death is a mournful and painful event. People grieve at the death of their beloved and shed tears. A mother cried sorrowfully in front of her son’s grave, saying “Son, why are you there?” Jesus, who came to Lazarus’ tomb, is full of compassion. The Lord has mercy on those who are in trials and distress. So he saved many people from their troubles. He had mercy on us, who were dead in our sins and transgressions, and saved us. Just as we received mercy from the Lord, we should be merciful to others and help them. Through his mercy, we are also able to understand and share others’ distress and show compassion.
Lazarus’ tomb was a cave (v.38). The entrance of the cave was gated with a large stone. The tombs in Israel were caves of stones. Abraham was buried in the cave of Machpelah (Genesis 25:9). Jesus was also buried in a tomb hewn from rock (Matthew 27:60). The Israelites buried the dead inside tombs that were cut out of rock or excavated.
Jesus said to take away the stone that was laid across the tomb’s entrance. Then Martha, a sister of Lazarus, replied, “By this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there for four days” (v.39). Martha is engrossed in reality. She is thinking that it has already been four days, and there is a bad smell. She is focused on the current situation and problem. This delineates the limit of humans as creatures. The Israelites, when they saw the Red Sea in front of them, thought they were all going to die. We also tend to focus on the reality, present situation, and problem. We judge by what we see. This leads to despair, discouragement, and distress. This was what was happening to Martha. If Lazarus had died just now, he could possibly be raised to life again. But since it has been four days and there is a bad smell, would there be hope? She may have thought that it was impossible for Lazarus to be raised to life. However, we must remember: Jesus who saves is with us. The Lord solves all our problems. The Lord, who loves us, who died and was raised for us helps and delivers us.
Jesus responded to Martha, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” (v.40). We should engrave his words in our heart and remember them. The word of the Lord is not the word of a human. His word is almighty. All things are possible with his word. With his word, Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead. The word of the Lord has the power of salvation. God saved the Israelites from Egypt as he had said to Abraham. God saved David from the hand of king Saul according to his word. His word has the power to save us from all problems and circumstances. Therefore, we believe in his word.
Jesus says to Martha, “Martha, you have to believe my word. You have to believe that things will turn out according to my word. You should believe that Lazarus will be raised to life. When you believe, then you will see the glory of God.” Jesus said that whoever believes him will live even though they die (v.25). Jesus says that although Lazarus died, was in the tomb for four days, and there is a bad smell, she should believe that he will rise again.
We must remember that we should believe if we want to see the glory of God. When we do not believe, we cannot see God’s glory. Jesus wants faith from us. Faith brings about God’s power. And those who believe will overcome sin and death and live eternally. Faith is the shortcut to overcoming all hardships, problems, the world, and temptations. Faith brings about salvation. Humans are saved through faith. Faith is the way to see God’s glory that works through the power of Christ. To be saved and see the glory of God, we must believe. Let us live with faith and gain victory and salvation, and see the glory of God.
