모든 사람이 동일하지 않다. 사람마다 외모와 성품이 다르다. 각 사람은 재능과 능력도 다르다. 사람들의 마음도 그렇다. 마음이 좋고 선한 사람이 있다. 마음이 악한 사람도 있다. 모두가 악하고 모두가 선하지 않다. 예수를 믿는 사람도 있고 믿지 않는 사람도 있다. 주를 순종하는 사람도 있고 순종하지 않는 사람도 있다. 본문 성경은 믿지 않는 유대인들의 태도와 박해를 묘사하고 있다.
유대인들은 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 행하신 기적을 보았다. 그들 중에는 믿는 사람도 있었다. 하지만 대다수는 믿지 않았다. 믿는 사람들은 주님께 순종하고 섬긴다. 믿지 않는 사람들은 순종하지 않는다. 믿지 않는 유대인들이 예수님이 하신 일을 바리새인들에게 알린다(46). 바리새인들은 예수님을 믿지 않고 박해하는 사람들이다. 그들은 주님의 대적자들이다. 그들은 예수님을 죽이려고 한다. 나를 해치려고 하는 사람에게 알리는 것은 좋은 일이 아니다. 그것은 나를 큰 위험에 빠뜨릴 수 있다.
바리새인들과 대제사장들은 공회를 소집하고 의논했다(47). 이들은 선한 목적으로 모이지 않았다. 그들은 악한 생각으로 모였다. 그들은 예수님의 사역을 방해하는 사람들이다. 그들은 당연히 예수님을 구주로 믿어야 했다. 그들은 예수님을 믿고, 경배하고, 찬양하고, 순종해야 했다. 왜냐하면 그것은 하나님의 뜻이요 옳기 때문이다. 우리가 주의 복음을 듣고 믿는 것은 하나님의 뜻이다. 하나님은 믿음을 통해서 자기의 사역을 이루신다. 우리가 믿지 않으면 예수님을 보내신 하나님의 뜻이 이루어지지 않는다. 하나님의 뜻은 영생이다(요 6:40). 영생은 믿는 자에게 주어진다. 믿지 않는 유대인들은 음모를 꾸미고 계략을 세우고 있다. 이것은 하나님을 대적하는 행위다. 그들은 주님을 높이고, 영화롭게 하고, 전하는 일을 논의했어야 한다. 그들은 하나님의 아들 메시야를 박해하고 죽이려고 한다. 이것은 예수님을 믿지 않은 결과다.
그들은 많은 사람이 예수님을 믿는 것을 시기하고 방해한다. 그들은 사람들이 예수님을 믿게 하려고 노력해야 했다. 그들은 예수님이 메시야로서 많은 표적을 행하는 것을 시기하고 두려워 했다. 이것이 불신의 비극이다. 그들은 예수님이 하신 사역을 기뻐하고 찬양했어야 했다. 예수님을 믿지 않는 사람들은 주를 미워하고, 비방하고, 싫어한다. 그들은 죄의 길에 행한다. 주를 믿지 않는 사람은 죄의 종으로 산다. 그들은 하나님의 진노와 심판 아래 있다. 거기서 벗어나는 길은 믿음이다. 우리는 주 예수를 믿음으로 하나님의 진노와 심판에서 벗어나서 하나님이 주 예수 그리스도 안에서 주시는 은총과 복을 누린다. 그래서 믿는 자가 복이 있다.
대제사장들과 바리새인들은 근거 없는 추측을 한다(48). 그들은 예수님이 사역을 계속하면 모든 사람들이 주를 믿을 것이라고 말한다. 그것은 당연하고 좋은 일이다. 그런데 그들은 그것을 두려워하고 있다. 그들은 로마인들이 와서 자기들의 땅과 민족을 빼앗아 갈 것이라고 추측한다(48). 이것은 근거 없는 상상에 불과하다. 예수님은 유대인과 로마인 그리고 모든 사람을 구원하려고 오셨다. 주님의 사역은 모든 사람에게 큰 은총이요 복이다. 박해자들은 무익한 상상을 하고 있다.
49-50절은 대제사장 가야바의 예언이다. 그는 예수님의 죽음의 의미에 대해서 말하고 있다. 그는 예수님의 죽음은 유대민족을 위하는 것이라고 말한다. 그는 유대민족이 망하지 않는 길은 에수님이 죽는 것이라고 예언한다. 사실 예수님은 구약성경에 유대인의 메시야로서 예언되어 있었다. 예수님은 그 예언대로 오셨다. 메시야이신 예수님은 유대인과 만민의 구주이시다.
51-52절은 가야바의 예언에 대한 해석이다. 그는 당시에 대제사장으로서 말했다. 예수님의 죽음은 유대민족과 택하신 자녀들을 위한 것이다(51-52). 또한 예수님의 죽음은 흩어진 하나님의 자녀를 모아서 하나가 되게 하기 위한 것이다. 예수님은 십자가에서 피를 흘려 죽으셨다. 그것은 속죄의 죽음이다. 결국 주님의 속죄의 죽음은 교회를 통해서 하나님의 자녀들이 하나가 되게 하셨다. 모든 성도들은 주님의 한 몸 지체로서 하나다. 불신 유대인들은 그 날부터 예수님을 죽이려고 모의했다(53). 이것이 불신 유대인들의 현주소다. 그들이 주를 믿었더라면 그렇게 하지 않았을 것이다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 불신은 주에게 해를 끼치고 죄를 짓는다. 믿음은 주를 영화롭게 하고, 존귀하게 하고, 기쁘게 한다. 그래서 우리는 오직 믿음으로 살아야 한다.
The Unbelieving Jews (John 11:46-53)
Not all people are the same. Each person has a different appearance and personality. They each have unique talents and abilities. Likewise, people’s hearts are not all the same. There are those who have a good heart and others who have an evil heart. Not everyone is evil nor are they all good. There are those who believe in Jesus and those who do not believe in him. There are people who obey the Lord and people who disobey him. Today’s passage describes the attitudes and persecutions of the unbelieving Jews.
The Jews heard the words of Jesus and saw the miracles he performed. There were some among them who believed in him. However, the majority of the Jews did not believe. Those who believe obey the Lord and serve him. But those who don’t believe do not obey. The unbelieving Jews informed the Pharisees about what Jesus did (v.46). The Pharisees did not believe in Jesus and persecuted him. They were opponents of the Lord. They tried to kill Jesus. Reporting to people who try to harm us is not a good thing. It can put us in great danger.
The Pharisees and the chief priests assembled the Sanhedrin and discussed the situation (v.47). They did not come together for a good purpose. They met with an evil thought. They tried to hinder Jesus’ ministry. They rightfully had to believe in Jesus as the Savior. They had to believe in Jesus, and worship, praise, and obey him. This is God’s will and what is right. It is God’s will that we hear his gospel and believe. God fulfills his ministry through faith. If we do not believe, the will of God, who sent Jesus, does not get fulfilled. God’s will is eternal life (John 6:40). Eternal life is given to those who believe. The Jews who didn’t believe plotted evil and devised wicked schemes. This is an act of opposing God. They instead had to discuss about exalting, glorifying, and spreading the word about Jesus. But they persecuted and tried to kill the Messiah, the Son of God. This is a result of unbelief.
The Pharisees were envious of Jesus and tried to put obstacles in the way of people believing in him. They had to guide people to believe in Jesus. But instead they envied and feared that Jesus was performing many miracles as the Messiah. This is the tragedy of unbelief. They had to rejoice in Jesus’ ministry and sing praises. Those who don’t believe in Jesus dislike, criticize, and hate the Lord. They walk in the path of sin. People who don’t believe in Jesus live as slaves to sin. They are under the wrath and judgment of God. Faith is the way to depart such life. We are able to escape God’s wrath and judgment through faith in the Lord Jesus, and enjoy the favor and blessings that God gives us in the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, blessed are those who believe.
The chief priests and the Pharisees made groundless conjecture (v.48). They discussed among themselves that if they let Jesus go on with his ministry, all people would believe in him. This is a good thing, but they feared it. They conjectured that the Romans would come and take away their nation (v.48). Such is but a groundless imagination. Jesus came to save the Jews, the Romans, and all people. Jesus’ ministry was a magnificent favor and blessing to all people. The persecutors were imagining things in futility.
Verses 49-50 are a prophecy of the high priest Caiaphas. He spoke of the meaning of Jesus’ death. He said that the death of Jesus is for the entire Jews. He said that Jesus must die so that the Jewish nation may not perish. The fact is, it is prophesied in the Old Testament that Jesus is the Messiah of the Jews. And he came according to the prophecy. Jesus the Messiah is the Savior of All.
Verses 51-52 interpret Caiaphas’ prophecy. He spoke as the high priest of the year. Jesus’ death is for the Jewish nation and the children of God (v.51-52). Moreover, it is to bring together the scattered children of God and make them one. Jesus died on the cross, shedding blood. It is the death of atonement. Eventually, Jesus’ death of atonement made the children of God united as one through the church. All believers are one as parts of one body. The unbelieving Jews conspired to take his life (v.53). This is the reality of the unbelieving Jews. If they had believed in the Lord, they would not have made such decisions. We must remember that unbelief hurts the Lord and leads to sin. On the other hand, faith glorifies, honors, and pleases the Lord. Therefore, we shall live by faith.
