미국의 명절 가운데 추수감사절이 있다. 이 때에는 흩어져 있는 자녀들과 가족들이 모인다. 사람들은 하나님이 주신 은혜에 감사한다. 그리고 추수감사절 음식으로 주로 터키를 먹는다. 유대인의 명절 가운데 유월절이 있다. 오늘 성경 본문은 유대인들이 유월절에 예수님을 찾는 내용이다. 유월절은 예수님과 관련해서 매우 중요한 교훈이 있다.
불신 유대인들 특히 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 예수님을 죽이려고 한다. 예수님은 그들의 음모를 아셨다(54). 유대인들은 자기들의 왕, 메시야, 구주로 오신 예수님을 영접하고 순종하고 섬겨야 했다. 그런데 그들은 예수님을 믿지 않았다. 불신앙에 빠진 그들은 예수님을 박해하고 죽이려고 음모를 꾸몄다. 유대인들은 자기들을 사랑하고 구원하기 위해 오신 주님을 대적하고 있다. 우리가 나를 위하고 사랑하는 사람을 괴롭히고 해를 끼치는 것은 비극이다. 내가 사랑하는 사람이 나를 해치는 것은 견디기 어려운 일이다. 세상에는 악한 사람들이 있다. 그들은 선한 사람들을 괴롭히고 힘들게 한다.
예수님은 유대인들의 음모를 아시고 숨어 다니셨다. 예수님은 유대인들을 떠나서 제자들과 함께 에브라임이라는 동네에 가셨다. 주님은 안전한 장소로 이동하셨다. 다윗은 사울 왕이 그를 죽이려고 했을 때에, 굴과 황무지 그리고 숲으로 피했다. 사람들은 해를 끼치는 사람들을 피해 다닌다. 예수님도 이유 없이 자기를 박해하고 죽이려고 하는 유대인들을 피하셨다.
그 때에 유월절이 다가왔다(55). 많은 유대인들이 자신을 성결하기 위해서 유월절 전에 시골에서 예루살렘으로 올라왔다(55). 유월절은 유대인의 가장 큰 명절이다. 유월절은 출애굽을 기념하는 절기다. 이스라엘 사람들은 유월절에 애굽에서 나왔다. 그 날은 유대인의 달력으로 1월 14일 저녁이다. 그들은 이때에 어린양을 잡았다. 그들은 양의 피를 문지방과 문설주에 발랐다(출 12:7). 죽음의 천사는 그 피를 보고 이스라엘의 장자를 죽이지 않았다. 하지만 애굽인의 모든 장자는 하나님이 죽이셨다. 어린양의 피가 그들을 죽지 않게 했다. 죽음의 천사는 피를 보고 지나갔다. 그것이 유월절이다. 유월절 어린양은 예수님을 가리킨다. 예수님은 우리들의 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린양으로 오셨다(요 1:29). 하나님의 어린양이신 예수님은 우리를 위해 십자가에서 죽으셨다. 십자가에서 흘린 어린양, 예수님의 피가 우리 죄를 씻으셨다. 우리는 예수님의 십자가의 피의 공로로 구원을 얻고 영원히 산다. 어린양 예수님의 피가 내 죄를 깨끗하게 했다. 우리는 하나님의 아들 예수님의 피로 죄에서 해방되어 거룩하게 되었다. 그래서 우리는 주님의 속죄의 은총을 기억해야 한다. 우리는 마음과 몸을 깨끗하고 성결하게 해야 한다. 이를 위해서 우리는 주님처럼 거룩한 주의 말씀을 순종해야 한다.
유월절에 예루살렘에 올라 온 유대인들은 예수님을 찾았다(56). 그들이 예수님을 찾은 이유는 무엇인가? 그들은 예수님을 구주로 믿기 위해서 찾은 것이 아니다. 그들은 예수님이 계신 곳을 대제사장들과 바리새인들에게 알려 주기 위해서 찾았다(57). 그들이 예수님을 찾은 동기가 선하지 않다. 많은 사람들이 교회에 나온다. 그들은 예수님을 구주로 믿는다. 그래서 그들은 구원 받고 주를 경배하고 섬기기 위해서 교회에 나온다. 이것이 교회에 나오는 바른 동기다. 하지만 어떤 사람들은 순수하지 못한 동기로 교회에 나온다. 그들은 단지 자기의 유익을 위해서 나온다. 그러한 믿음은 바른 믿음이 아니다. 그것은 주님이 원하시고 기뻐하시는 믿음이 아니다. 우리는 주님이 원하시는 믿음을 가져야 한다. 그것은 주님을 믿고 순종하는 것이다. 그것은 주의 말씀대로 살면서 주님의 뜻을 이루는 삶이다. 여기에서 벗어나면 우리의 믿음은 아무 유익이 없다.
유대인들은 유월절에 예수님이 예루살렘에 올라 올 것이라고 생각했다. 사실 예수님은 유월절에는 예루살렘으로 올라 가셨다. 그 이유는 사람들에게 복음을 전하기 위해서다. 주님은 그 목적을 위해서 세상에 오셨다. 주님은 하나님 나라의 복음으로 전해서 사람들이 구원을 받게 위해서 오셨다. 우리는 주님의 복음을 듣고 믿고 구원을 받았다. 대제사장들과 바리새인들은 유대인들에 명령했다. 그들은 예수님이 계신 곳을 알면 신고하라고 했다. 그들은 예수님을 잡아서 죽이려고 했기 때문이다. 그들의 불신앙은 결국 예수님을 죽이게 된다. 그들은 자기들의 메시야를 죽인 것이다. 그들은 불신앙에 빠져서 죄를 짓고 파멸에 이르렀다. 하지만 우리는 믿음으로 구원을 받았다. 우리는 예수님을 하나님의 아들 그리스도 구주로 믿고 순종해야 한다. 그것이 우리의 본분이기 때문이다.
Jesus and the Passover (John 11:54-57)
Among the U.S. holidays, there is Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, scattered family members and relatives come together. And people give thanks to God for his grace. For the Thanksgiving meal, people customarily eat turkey. Among Jewish holidays, there is the Passover. Today’s passage is about the Jews looking for Jesus on the Passover. The Passover has an important lesson related to Jesus.
The unbelieving Jews, particularly the chief priests and Pharisees, tried to kill Jesus. Jesus knew their plot (v.54). The Jews had to receive and obey Jesus, who came as the King, the Messiah, and the Savior. However, they did not believe in him. The people who did not believe plotted to persecute and kill him. The Jews were opposing the Lord who loved us and came to save us. It is a tragedy when we inflict harm on someone who is for us and loves us. Similarly, it is difficult to bear when someone we love harms us. In this world are wicked people. They cause harm and distress to good people.
Knowing their plans, Jesus moved about secretly. He withdrew from the Jews and went to Ephraim with his disciples. He went to a safe place. When King Saul tried to kill David, he escaped to caves, wilderness, and forests. People avoid other bad people. Jesus also tried to avoid the Jews who tried to persecute and kill him without reason.
Now the Passover was near. Many Jews went up to Jerusalem from the country before the Passover for ceremonial cleansing (v.55). To the Jews, the Passover is one of the most significant Jewish holidays. The Passover is a day that celebrates Exodus. The Israelites came out of Egypt on the Passover. On Jewish calendar, the Passover is January 14th, evening. On that day, they took a lamb and put the blood on the sides and tops of the doorframe of their houses (Exodus 12:7). The destroying angel saw the blood and passed over them. The Passover lamb refers to Jesus. Jesus came as the Lamb of God who bore the sin of the world (John 1:29). Jesus, the Lamb of God, died on the cross for us. The blood of Jesus, the Lamb, shed on the cross washed our sins away. We were freed from sin and were sanctified by the blood of Jesus, the Son of God. Therefore, we must remember the Lord’s gift of forgiveness. We must sanctify our hearts and bodies. To this end, we must obey the holy Word of God, just like Jesus.
The Jews who came up to Jerusalem on the Passover looked for Jesus (v.56). What was their reason? It wasn’t to believe in Jesus as their Savior. Instead, it was to inform the chief priests and the Pharisees about where he is (v.57). Their motive for seeking Jesus wasn’t good. Many people come to church. They believe in Jesus as the Savior. So they come to church to be saved and to worship and serve the Lord. This is the right motive. However, there are people who come to church with impure motives. They come to church just for their benefit. This is not an appropriate faith. It does not please the Lord. We must have faith that the Lord is pleased with. Such faith is believing in the Lord and obeying him. Such life is one that lives by the Word of the Lord and fulfills his will. If we deviate from this faith, our faith is meaningless.
The Jews thought Jesus would go up to Jerusalem on the Passover. Jesus did go up to Jerusalem on the Passover. It was to preach the gospel to the people. Jesus came to the world for that purpose. We heard the Lord’s gospel, believed, and were saved. The chief priests and the Pharisees ordered the Jews to report where Jesus was if they found out. For they had plotted to arrest him and kill him. Their unbelief eventually killed Jesus. They killed their Messiah. They sinned and encountered destruction in their unbelief. However, we received salvation through faith. We must believe in Jesus as Christ the Savior, the Son of God. For this is our duty.
