하나님은 사울 왕에게 아말렉을 진멸하라고 하셨다. 하나님은 그에게 사람과 가축을 다 죽이라고 명령했다. 그러나 그는 좋은 양과 소를 죽이지 않았다. 그는 그 짐승으로 하나님께 제사를 드리려고 했다. 하지만 하나님은 기뻐하지 않으셨다. 하나님은 사울 왕의 불순종을 보셨다. 그래서 하나님은 사울 왕을 버리셨다. 우리가 무엇을 기준으로 생각하고, 무엇을 중심으로 행해야 하는가? 오늘 본문은 그것을 보여 준다.
예수님은 유월절 6일 전에 베다니에 오셨다(1). 베다니는 나사로의 동네다. 그는 죽었지만 예수님이 다시 살린 사람이다. 예수님은 어떤 분인가. 주님은 죽은 자를 살리는 능력이 있다. 예수님은 사람의 생명과 죽음을 다스리는 권능이 있다. 우리는 그 주님 앞에서 겸손히 순종해야 한다. 주님은 믿음으로 순종하는 사람은 영생으로, 불순종하는 사람은 멸망으로 다스린다.
죽을 병이 든 자녀를 치료하여 살려 주는 것은 큰 은혜다. 예수님은 죽은 나사로를 은혜로 살려 주셨다. 주님은 어떤 비용도 받지 않았다. 그것은 엄청난 은혜다. 주님은 값 없이 주시는 은혜로 영죽을 나를 영원히 살리셨다. 우리는 그 크고 놀라우신 은혜에 감사하며 보답해야 한다. 나사로 가정에서 주님을 위해 잔치했다(2). 귀하고 특별한 손님이 있다. 우리는 그런 사람은 특별히 귀하게 모신다. 예수님은 가장 귀하신 분이다. 주님은 우리의 생명의 구주이시다. 주님은 하나님의 아들 메시야다. 우리는 그 주님을 모시기에 부족하다. 우리의 모든 정성을 다해서 모신다 해도 부족하다. 나사로 가정은 구주 예수님을 대접하는 은총을 얻었다. 그것은 복된 일이다. 우리도 역시 온 마음과 정성을 다해서 주를 모시고 섬겨야 한다.
나사로의 형제인 마리아가 있다. 마리아는 지극히 비싼 향유를 예수님 발에 붓고 자기 머리털로 닦았다(3). 향유 냄새가 집에 가득했다. 마리아는 믿음이 있었다. 그는 예수님의 은혜를 깨달았다. 그는 자신과 나사로에게 베푸신 주님의 은혜에 보답하고 있다. 그는 받은 은혜에 대한 감사를 잊지 않았다. 우리도 역시 주님이 베푸신 은혜에 감사하며 보답해야 한다. 우리는 우리의 몸과 마음을 드려서 보답해야 한다. 그것이 바른 믿음이다. 주님께 대한 감사와 보답이 없는 믿음은 참된 믿음이 될 수 없다.
그런데 여기 가룟유다가 있다(4). 그는 예수님의 12제자들 중에 하나다. 그는 예수님을 배신하고 팔아 넘겼다. 유다는 마리아가 향유를 부은 것을 반대했다(5). 그는 300 데나리온이나 되는 향유를 허비하고 있다고 생각했다. 그는 향유를 판 돈으로 가난한 사람을 도울 수 있다고 주장했다. 유다는 돈을 중심으로 생각했다. 그는 ‘향유는 비싸다. 그것을 높은 가격에 팔 수 있다’고 생각했다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 믿음은 은혜다. 우리는 돈을 삶의 기준과 중심으로 생각해서는 안된다. 성경은 말한다. “돈을 사랑하는 것은 일만 악의 뿌리다 이것을 탐내는 자들은 미혹을 받아서 믿음에서 떠났다”(딤전 6:10). 우리의 마음에는 예수님이 계셔야 한다. 우리의 생각에는 주님의 말씀이 있어야 한다. 유다는 가난한 사람을 위하는 것처럼 말한다. 하지만 그는 자신을 속이고 있다. 그는 가난한 사람을 생각하는 것이 아니다. 성경은 그는 도둑으로 돈을 훔쳤다고 말한다(6). 그가 가난한 사람을 도우려면 전부터 그렇게 해야 했다. 그는 그렇게 하지 않았다. 유다는 단지 돈을 마음에 두고 있다. 그래서 결국 그는 은 30을 받고 예수님을 팔아 넘겼다. 돈을 의지하며 사는 사람은 돈에 의해서 넘어진다. 우리는 믿음으로 사는 사람이다. 우리는 주를 마음에 두고 모신다.
예수님은 ‘마리아가 향유를 부은 것은 예수님의 장례할 날을 위한 것이다’(7)라고 말한다. 마리아 행위는 예수님의 죽으심을 미리 준비한 것이다. 바로 여기에 믿음의 중심이 있다. 예수님이 기준이다. 예수님이 중심이다. 주님은 나의 생명이요 모든 것이다. 그 주님이 삶의 중심이요 기준이다. 우리는 주님과 주의 말씀을 기준으로 생각해야 한다. 물론 이것은 어려운 일이다. 그러나 우리는 성경의 가르침대로 순종해야 한다. 우리는 힘써 노력해야 한다.
주님은 ‘가난한 사람들은 언제든지 도울 수 있다. 하지만 주님은 항상 있지 않다’라고 말한다(8). 예수님은 조금 있다가 세상을 떠나게 된다. 그 주님을 위해서 할 일이 우선이고 중요하다. 우리는 기억해야 한다. 우리는 먼저 주님의 말씀을 생각해야 한다. 우리는 주님을 중심으로 살아야 한다. 주님보다 중요하고 앞서는 것은 없기 때문이다. 예수님은 내 마음과 삶의 절대적인 기준이요 중심이다.
Jesus-Centered (John 12:1-8)
God told King Saul to utterly destroy Amalek. God told him to put to death all people and livestock. But Saul spared the best of lambs and cows. He intended to sacrifice them to God. However, God was not pleased. God saw King Saul’s disobedience. And he rejected him. When we think or act, what should be our standard? Today’s passage tells us this.
Jesus came to Bethany six days before the Passover (v.1). Bethany was the town where Lazarus lived. He had died but Jesus raised him to life. Who is Jesus? Jesus has the power to raise the dead. He has the power to rule over life and death. We must humbly obey the Lord. Jesus rules obedient people of faith with eternal life and the disobedient with destruction.
Healing our family of their sickness and enabling them to live is an immense grace. In today’s passage, Jesus raised dead Lazarus by grace. He did not receive any payment in return. It was a magnificent grace. Now Jesus raised us, who had to die eternally, by grace given free of charge. Should we not return his great and amazing grace with thankfulness? Lazarus’ family hosted dinner in Jesus’ honor (v.2). There are guests whom we consider honorable and special. And we treat them with special respect. Now Jesus is the most honorable figure. He is Life our Savior. He is God’s Son, the Messiah. And we are unworthy servants. Even though we do our best, we cannot fully pay for God’s grace. But Lazarus’ family received the gift of serving Jesus the Savior. This is a blessing. We must also serve the Lord with all our heart and strength just as Lazarus’ family did.
Lazarus had a sister named Mary. Mary poured expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair (v.3). The fragrance of perfume filled the house. Mary had faith, and she understood Jesus’ grace. She was returning the grace granted to her and Lazarus. She did not forget her gratitude toward Jesus’ grace. Likewise, we must return the grace of the Lord given us with all our mind and strength. Such is the genuine faith. Faith without thankfulness and reciprocity to the Lord cannot be true faith.
But now there is Judas (v.4). He was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. He betrayed Jesus and sold him. He even opposed Mary’s act of pouring perfume on Jesus. He thought Mary was wasting the perfume that is worth 300 denarius. He insisted that with the money, they could have helped the poor. His thoughts are centered around money. He thought that the perfume was expensive and it could have been sold at a high price. We must remember that faith is grace. We should not make money the center and standard of life. The Bible says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:10). In the center of our heart should be Jesus. In our thoughts should be the Word of God. Judas sounded like he was concerned for the poor. But he was deceiving himself. He wasn’t concerned for the poor. The Bible says that he was a thief and stole money (v.6). If he was really concerned about the poor, he should have had a history of helping the poor. But that was not the case. He had his mind set on money. Therefore, his love of money triggered him to eventually sell Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. People who trust in money stumble because of it. We are those who live by faith. That means we have Jesus in our heart and serve him.
Jesus said, “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial” (v.7). Mary was preparing for Jesus’ burial. For Mary, Jesus was the center of her action. Jesus was the standard. We should realize that Jesus is our life and All. He is the center and standard of our lives. Our thoughts should be centered around Jesus and his word. This can be difficult. However, we must make every effort to obey according to the teaching of the Bible.
Jesus says, “You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me” (v.8). Jesus was soon to leave the world. Prioritizing what we do for him was important. We must remember that we must first look to His words. We must live with Jesus at the center of our lives. For there is nothing more important or worthy than Jesus. Jesus is our heart’s absolute center and standard.
